3. SkADaMo 2013 Day 9

cat's pajamas new 450

oIn an effort to assuage the annoyance of my cat Iggy towards all the doggies I’ve been drawing lately, I present to you:

“Cat’s Pajamas”

So, when you get a chance, swing by here and check out my fellow SkADaMoers (yes it’s a word. I know because I just made it up.)

Cheers!

“Melon Collie”

What’s with all the dogs lately? At least that’s what my cat Iggy seems to be saying, as she stomps across my keyboard. So I added a feline counterpart, for fear of retribution.

So hey, stop on by here and check out what the other SkADaMoers are up to

5. SkADaMo 2013 Day 2

Skadamo 2013 2 gato de los muertos 450

Gato de los Muertos

Happy Dia De Los Muertos!

Actually, not sure that’s an appropriate salutation, but I do know that I love the art and culture of this Latino holiday! So in honor of the day and of all our dearly departed I thought I’d do a quick skeleton sketch… skeltch if you will.

So for more sketchy goodness, why not check out my fellow SkADaMoers here. Oh, and if I’ve left anyone out or I have the wrong link or what not, give me a shout!

6. Cardinals and Roses

I had this drawing on the board back when the conclave first started, but then the cats all got sick (they're fine now - BAD head cold, BAD BAD BAD) and that went on for an endless couple of weeks, and I got a little behind, playing nurse and all.

(please click on this to see it bigger)

These are some of the CATholic cardinals who didn't get elected Pope, out for a stroll through Rome, seeing the sites, and scouting for a place to have a nice plate of fishy pasta.

I had a lot of fun doing this one! Its a combination of colored pencil and Photoshop. A while back I figured out how to do a 'digital colored pencil' technique, but then got sidetracked with something else and never really developed that idea. I think now that I will go back to it, and see if I can put together a portfolio of children's book pieces that are all done that way. TALL ORDER. But hey, one piece at a time. I'll blog as I go, so you can stumble along with me.

I also finished this red rose leaves piece. This is ALL colored pencil, the old fashioned kind. I have some photos of other leaves and buds that I would like to do, and make this a series. This one was done with Polychromos and Pablos (both oil based), on Stonehenge paper, and is just under 8"x 8" (20.32 x 20.32 cm). I will do prints in the shop as soon as I am able. Today maybe.

Speaking of the shop - I'm changing the paper I use for prints from the semi-gloss I've been using, to Epson Presentation Matte. I like it a lot better. Its a lighter weight, but I love the crisp images it produces. It also works really well for less "shiny" subject matter (like candy in foil wrappers). I still have some of the semi-gloss though, so if you would prefer that for something, please let me know.

I have to tweak my whole shop (today's chore) to include the new paper, as well as adjust some prices for shipping. I'll think I have it all sorted out, then I'll get a sale to a new (to me) country that has crazy expensive shipping, and I'll have to include that in all the listings. Like Australia, for example. What I could send here in the US for $3.50 will cost $9 to Australia sometimes. I hate having to charge so much to ship things, but I also hate to get a rude surprise at the post office, and find out I've just lost all my profit on the sale to under-charged shipping. Those of you with shops know what I'm talking about.  Its the least fun part of having a shop. I just want to make the art!

It’s the last day of November and looks like I’ve finally collapsed made it to the finish line of both SkADaMo and PiBoIdMo. Wooo hooo!

That was crazy but very rewarding. I might just have to come up with something to crazy up my December as well.

Hmmm, another Advent Calendar, 12 Days of Christmas again… maybe an elf a day. You never know.

13. SkADaMo Day 23

Right up until the moment Iggy remembered her intense fear of water, she quite enjoyed her day spent stalking ducks.

………………………………………………………………………………………..

14. New Furry Studio Gremlin

His name is Spike and he loves knawing on art books and terrorizing Miffy and Boris.

Hopefully, eating paintings will not be in his repertoire...

I suspect there will be a lot of cat hairs in the paint tho...

In other news, I just signed up with a sketch journal group through the Art Academy going to Taos, NM in June to take in the atmosphere and draw. I will keep you all posted. It is helmed by Amy Bogard who does really lovely journals of her life. I have been inspired by sites like http://www.urbansketchers.org/ and http://www.theydrawandtravel.com/

I recently posted my Greece Sketchbook. I am hoping that this will be an excuse to do more travel sketching and different techniques.

15. SkADaMo

Woke up thinking about my late, great soul-mate kitty, the ever whiney, cantankerous, bossy yet somehow adorable Joey. So I drew ‘im.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Ya see, it’s November and all the cool challenges are well under way. There’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) and PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month, of which I am a participant of.) There are probably a bunch more, but suffice it to say, November is a busy month for some.

So I thought just to heap even more onto my plate, I’d make November a “sketch a day month” for myself. Just trying to get back to the early days of my blog when I feverishly posted just about every single day. When my synapses seemed to be firing on all cylinders and ideas where presenting themselves to me faster than I could sketch or write them down.

Sigh. Those were good days.

Not sure if this exercise will get me back to that place, but I figure between attempting a picture book idea a day and a sketch/blog post a day, I’ll at least have a notebook/sketchbook/blog filled with chicken scratches of some sort or another.

Better than blank pages, I say.

Anywho, it’s November 3rd and ordinarily I might say to myself, dude you need three sketches today to catch up. But no. Not gonna do it.

It starts today.

Ends November 30.

So pppphhhhhtttttttt INNER CRITIC!
Phhhhtttttttttttppph to you and the horse you rode in on.

17. ferocious

The kitten seemed unfazed by Buster’s ferocious, canine prowess. The little hairball obviously didn’t know who he was dealing with.

…………………………………………………….

The Illustration Friday theme this week is “ferocious.”

So, decided to throw a little color on a quick sketch. It’s fun to not agonize for a change, hee hee!

23. Beautiful word: commitment

I'm busy, busy, busy working on my Spring 2012 book, RADIATE, and wanted to do a fly-by post. As I posted earlier, my sweetie proposed and we're getting married this year...that's an amazing commitment. And it gets even stronger as we just committed to a huge undertaking: kitty parents.

Meet Madison Leeny (Madi in back) and Smokey Farquar Booreguard IV (Boo in front), the newest additions to our family. We rescued them from Polly's Pet Shelter in Los Angeles, CA, after I read of their heartbreaking story online.

Madi and Boo were born to a feral mommy on Thanksgiving. A lady was watching out for the small family and leaving food out for them. She was going to wait until the kittens (three of them) were eight weeks old before taking them to the shelter. Sadly, when the babies were five weeks old, a stray dog attacked and killed the mommy and their sibling. Madi and Boo escaped unharmed, but were left orphaned. Fortunately, Polly's Pet Rescue took them in and simply by a pure miracle, I decided to look for kittens for adoption while we were staying in Los Angeles. It only took three days after the initial e-mail for the transaction to be completed.

Now Madi and Boo live very happily in the RV with us, playing and running, chasing each other, batting the balls around, and sleeping any time they want. They are an amazing addition to our family and we have fully committed to their health and well-being. They are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped.

Commitment comes in many forms...and I'm pleased to dedicate myself to these two little bundly puffs of love in my life. Well...as I write RADIATE!

Do you have a new kitten or puppy in your life? Tell us about the joys of your pets.

Hugs,
Marley = )
