1. Baboushka Kitty

I finally finished this gal. She was going to be my Christmas card last year, but I started her too late, then had some 'real work' deadlines and had to put her aside.

She is a Russian Baboushka. The traditional baboushka outfit is just a crazy mix of patterns and color, with seemingly no regard for what might go well together. Therein lies its charm. So I pushed that as far as I could and had a lot of fun. The black floral border is a Khokhloma pattern, which is also a Russian thing.

I could do this same 'look' digitally, and might if I decide to keep going with this kind of art because boy howdy this was fussy to do with pencils, and was s-l-o-w. I also had to burnish (press really hard) to get the colors saturated enough, and that does bad things to one's hand after a while. I wanted to have an original piece though, rather than just a digital file, so I kept going with it.

Here are a couple of details, so you can see that yes, it is in fact colored pencil ~

I will make cards and prints and put them in the arCATecture etsy shop soon, and maybe make some stuff on Zazzle too.

5. Last day of Ballet Week - Grace under pressure!

Full of Grace. Buy Full of Grace stuff with free shipping (using that link right there)
I love this piece because it makes me think of grace under pressure. The Olympics are still so fresh in my mind.. I watched as much of the gymnastics as I could and they continue to wow, shock, and  amaze. I don't know how they do it, but how ever they do it, they show that things are possible that we might not think are possible. They are the ultimate in "seeing is believing". They blow me away. I appreciate their art so much!!

This is the last day of Ballet Week, so loyal reader, please, please make sure to enter into my Ballet Week giveaway and Like my FB page to enter. It's that simple (and I want you to win! :D ) I'll be drawing names later on this evening, and I will announce the winners here and on FB shortly thereafter.

So what was my inspiration for the THEME of Ballet Week? Here's TWO of them..

This statue is only a minute from my front door. The statue sits in front of the Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre. This ballet theatre and school is right next door to me. I so greatly enjoy seeing all of the ballet dancers go in and out all the time. Sometimes, when I'm walking into the Square, I see the dancers all dressed in their footless tights and light skirts and buns and ponytails, some wearing light ballet slippers, rushing to get to class. It brings a smile because not only is ballet a beautiful sport, but they are rushing to do something they love and, that brings me a lot of joy and happy good karma feelings.

Here is the SECOND inspiration...

This is my good little friend Solveig. She takes ballet at Jose Mateo. I think it is so fabulous that she enjoys ballet so much, and the kids are all so adorable in class! What more inspiration do you need?? This Ballet Week art was inspired by all of them, and , in some ways, it was created for them, too.

I hope you have enjoyed the week! Thanks for joining me.

7. I M NVR 2 BZY 4 STBX!

This one says it alll..... what is not to love! I am pretty much addicted to my Starbucks. I used to roll my eyes at my friends' admissions to Starbucks addiction. Well, here I am, years later, and completely a slave to my beverage of choice. I do love the Clover machine, I also love a decaf iced Americano. But my all-time favorite beverage is a venti iced green tea latte: soy, no classic (sweetener), 6 scoops of matcha. Yes I am addicted. I am completely whipped. Maybe that's why I made a nice matcha-flavored zebra background to this piece, tinged with the glowing, rosy pink of my happy heart and cheeks when I have a freshly made iced green tea latte straight from Starbucks. (By the way, they're good hot too, but only with skim, not soy. The soy gets sweeter when it's hot and it unbalances the delicate formula for blissful sipping.) Art print, iphone case, laptop.ipad skin, t-shirt available here

8. Dashing Lads!

I have a brand new piece I want to introduce you to... Here's Dashing Lads! This piece features two very handsome and very stylish kit-cats who apparently  take their time-management skills —and accessories— very seriously.
:D

I wonder if kit cat on the left is thinking that it is TIME... to go shopping for another dapper hat!

And kit-cat on the right looks like he's hiding something... maybe his wallet? (Good intentions!)

The art is available on 100% rag art prints (framed, if you want), museum-wrapped canvas (nice, thick 1 1/2" cradle - no frame needed), American Apparel t's in a variety of colors, note cards, laptop, iphone and ipad skins for both Mac and PC's, and hard iphone cases, made by Case Mate. (I have one. They're great quality.) See everything here.

I designed certain items with revised lettering or removed the lettering altogether, so each item is designed specifically for the product's dimensions and in the best way to showcase the art!

9. A homemade coloring book

This weekend, I will be spending ample time with my four-year-old ballerina friend Solveig. I want to have plenty of fun creative things for us to do together, so I made this coloring book for her.
inside front page (color print) and first coloring page

I used a ballet theme for most of the inside coloring pages. Since the recipient takes ballet classes, I am pretty sure we will be "on the same page" with the theme!
another coloring page

Something personaized is always extra-special

Everyone likes to "see their name in lights", so to speak! I included the recipient's name in some of the printed pages. It is a small detail and I know she will be delighted!

For a few of the pieces of art on the coloring pages, I tried different colored outlines instead of brown, just to punch things up a bit... and what young lady doesn't love pink and purple?

Back cover

I covered the front and back covers, both inside and outside, with art prints I already had lying around. I picked out a few that I thought were just rig

10. Optical Illusion Jive Cats

I opened a Society 6 store a couple of weeks ago. I love the concept of Society 6 and the product offerings are nice. I like that they offer a few thoughtful products and don't try to be all things to all people. And, from all I've read, the quality is excellent. So I took the plunge. I did also want to try the product, and I also happened to be in need of a new iphone case...

So let's play a game... Can you SPOT the Jive Cats iphone case?

This case is the Cat's Meow! I love it!!

I also put the Jive Cats on my lock screen and wallpaper!
Now, I have a real Jive Cats "optical illusion" iphone. :D

If you'd like a screen for your iphone too, simply leave a comment on this post and I'll be happy to make one, free for all and easy to download . :D

13. Illustration Friday: Mesmerizing

I love rainy days! Rain drops are mesmerizing, puddles too, and the big grey sky.
Does life move slower on a rainy day, or is it just me?
The kitty above certainly seems to think so...

16. Sketchbook Project #4 - Cats and flowers with vines

Here's my latest Sketchbook Project drawing. I have sure missed traditional pen drawing with a higher level of detail. I sure am feeling rejuvenated this week with all of this fine pen work.

This one is based on a sketch I've had for years. I love it as the basis of a textile pattern. Maybe now I'll actually get around to developing that idea further. It's a good start!

Enjoy!

17. Raining Cats and Dogs

Here is my second sketch post of my Sketchbook Project sketchbook art. You know how I said this was a place to "be myself"? Well, one of my favorite things to draw is cats and dogs. That is one of the reasons why I was so excited to grab that theme. When I saw it there, staring at me, felt a pinch from the universe to take part in the project. It could not have come at a better time because I really need a little bit of inspiration-renewal right now.

On a whim, I went to Utrecht yesterday, to pick up a second Moleskine notebook, one just like the Sketchbook Project sketchbook, in order to use it to double-up these mighty thin pages. Well, they did *not* have the Moleskine size that I needed, but I *did* happen to visit during a BIG 3-day-only, 40% off EVERYTHING in the store, Back To School Sale! And I just so happened to have a gift certificate card which was so generously given to me by my step-mom-in-law oh about 8 or so months ago! Since I've been working mostly digital this year, I haven't had the need to hit up Utrecht in the past few months. Plus, I'm generally a stock-piler when it comes to art supplies. I'm pretty faithful to my brands and products, so I like to keep extras of my staples around. It felt all breezy and fun to have an excuse to go!

I had such a great experience! And I *did* find something new, which was exciting and unusual for me. I found these Copic markers I'm always hearing about, and the extra-tiny ones (called Multi-Liners) were just perfect to use for the drawing above! You get a line similar to a Rapidograph with it, but the ink flow is way under control with these markers. There's no seepage into these pretty delicate Moleskine pages. I was able to draw over pencil lines, and then erase the pencil without any issue. They worked out great, and earn a thumbs up. I'm usually such a Rapidograph snob, but these are a really nice choice. I think I will keep these in the rotation.
