Hans My Hedgehog pdf (15) Hans My Hedgehog epub mobi (7)Hans My Hedgehog
A Short Fairy Tale Retelling by Manelle Oliphant
year ago I promised my father I would marry a hedgehog. Today I married him.
Father met him when he was lost in the forest. It frightened him to meet a man all hedgehog on his top half, but the hedgehog introduced himself as Hans and helped him find his way. In return, Father promised to give the hedgehog the first thing he met when he arrived home. He thought it would be his dogs or one of the servants but I raced ahead, and sealed my fate.
As a princess, I knew it wasn’t likely I would marry for love. Only, marrying a royal stranger from a distant place to secure an alliance is easier to stomach than marrying someone not quite human.
When he arrived I watched from my tower room. He rode through the gate on his rooster and the guards admitted him to the castle. After about an hour my father sent up a message. All was in order and I was to prepare myself.
I dressed myself, hoping that by doing what’s right and keeping a promise, it would turn out well. I think that’s what faith is, doing what you know is right and trusting in God things will turn out well, even if it seems impossible they could.
Now I wait in my bedroom, wearing my night shift, the fire the only light. Hans enters. I see his silhouette in the doorway until he shuts the door.
“You are my wife now,” he says to me from the dark.
“It is true,” I say
“It is an ugly thing for a pretty girl like you to be married to me.”
I feel tears form behind my eyes but I blink them away. “Not as ugly as breaking a promise.”
I hear a little snort. “You are right, not so ugly as that.”
He takes a step closer. I see his large form in the firelight. I feel faint and place my hand on the mantel for support. He shakes and snorts and I see him slough off his coat of quills. He drops it in front of me. After a minute I kneel down and touch it. The quills are soft. I look up. A man stands in front of me, a normal, not-half-animal, man. I look at his eyes. They are brown and nice and pleading. The moment stretches out between us but he doesn’t speak. I open my mouth but he shakes his head.
He wants me to do something. I look around confused. I look back to him. He stands still, his brown eyes begging for something. I look at the coat of quills, the fire, and back to him. He looks relieved, and I know what he wants me to do. I grab the quills and throw them into the flames. As they burn he falls to the floor and cries out. I see his skin turning black.
Have I done wrong? I turn to pull the coat back out of the fire, but it’s burning fast and hot. The flames light up the whole room. Hans screams again, the black on his skin spreads. I glance around and see the wash basin by the bed. I grab it and pour it over the writhing man. For a second I am surrounded by steam. When it clears Hans is calm and the black has washed away. I kneel down next to him.
Hans groans, and turns his head toward me. “Thank you wife. You have freed me from a life-long curse.”
I smile. “You’re welcome.”
Hans sits up. I help him to the bed and fetch more water. He nods his thanks as he takes it. Our eyes meet. His are still kind. I can see he is a good man and we will have a happy life. I can’t explain how I know this but I feel the truth of it inside me. I smile at him and take his hand. He smiles back.
The End

We ain’t afraid of no dinosaur!
I realized that I have not posted in a while. With all the shows I have been traveling to, I barely had time to keep up with my blog. Since I have posted, I was writing about the Wild West Fest at the Calico Ghost Town in Yermo, California. All around it was a fun show; we stayed with my in-laws at a nice hotel in Barstow for the weekend of the show. It was also my birthday so we all went out to eat the legendary Peggy Sue’s Diner on Sunday night.
Then it was off to Seattle again for Emerald City Comicon. It was an amazing show, with wonderful people. I have to give a big thank you to Sarah for the help at my booth (allowing me a few moments of rest to stretch my legs). The atmosphere was electric and everyone has my gratitude for making me feel so welcome up there. One of these days I will get Shawn up there so that I can leave him at the booth and go explore the city hehehe.
But that will only happen if the infamous Monsterpalooza does not fall on the same weekend as ECCC, like it did this year. Here is Shawn to tell you more. Shawn here and I have three words: It… was… awesome! I had a great time, though I wished Diana was there so that I could have walked around to check out more things. Oh well, there is always next year. All the fans were amazing and thank you to everyone for supporting Diana. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Thank you Shawn, so following those two shows was Wondercon. Oh how I love this show and it is one of my favorites. Not only did I get to see all my regular fans from SoCal, but Shawn being there allowed me to leave my booth from time to time to browse the artist alley. I got to catch up with some friends and meet some amazing artist for the first time. This was also the debut of my latest in the Terrible Trio series… the Gotham Bunnies, so cute, yet so evil.
Then I had a rare weekend off, and then it was time to get ready for Texas Frightmare Weekend. I was excited as I had never been to Dallas-Fort Worth, so this was a great opportunity to reach a new fan base. After a less than sterling start of the day (looking at you American Airlines) I made it to the show with only a half hour to set up. But after that it was one of the best weekends I have ever had at a show. It was intense, amazing, overwhelming at times and I can’t wait to go back next year. I may even bring Shawn along for this trip, I think he would enjoy the show very much.
Back to Southern California the following week for the Bat’s Day in the Park Black Market. This is always a fun show to do where I tend to pick up some great little pieces. It is only a one day show, so a bit more laid back and relaxing compared to the multi-day shows. Though being so close to Disney makes me want to go buy a ticket and go on some rides.
Finally last but not least was another trip up to Seattle (seriously, maybe I need to rent a room out there) for Crypticon. This was a great little horror convention with some pretty cool guests. I am starting to recognize a few people that have seen me at some of the area shows and meet some new fans. Thanks once again to Tamara of The Mystical Apothecary for being my traveling buddy once again.
Whoa, I was a bit more behind on this blog than I realized. Mid year resolution, I shall be better about updating my blog in a more timely manner. I have four more shows to do before I take some time off to do some more art and work on some upcoming projects, one of which is a book.
Keep on creating and have fun–
Diana

SUPER series 2 is available until 11:59 PM PST tonight, then they are gone for good.
If you buy two, I will throw in a SUPER Krang for free. My personal fave.
I love Mike Mitchell SO MUCH; discovering his work has been a joy, but not nearly as nice as discovering him as a human being. He’s made me reconsider how popular culture can inform art and image-making in a way that transcends ideas of fanart or appropriation. ANYway he has a new series of prints out. More info here.

My friend and yours Mike Mitchell has a lot of talents, but he’s particularly good at revisiting iconic images—or even just clothes—in a way that’s respectful and gently mocking at the same time. His current series of “SUPER” prints, modeled after the classic Superman pose, is available until midnight tonight (December 4th 2012) as a grab bag. I have some of Mike’s prints, enough actually that it’s starting to get a little creepy. Mike’s shop is here, and his Tumblr is here.

I have had several inquiries for prints lately. Especially from the series of daily sketches I have been doing. It's been a nice surprise!
To make things easier I decided to open an Etsy store. So I will be interested to see how that works. I'll keep you updated on how it goes - along with any pitfalls.
Right now I have just added eight prints, but will be adding more in the future along with other arty items and cards. I hope you will check it out!

Toodles!
Hazel

Lots of wonderful things have been happening lately on my travels toward an illustration/art career: my art classes have been going well, I now have some prints available for sale on Etsy and soon-to-be at Town Center Gallery, and I was selected to do an 8' x 20' mural by the Town Center Gallery. It will eventually go somewhere in Santa Maria, but the location is still be determined. My plan is to keep everyone updated on the progress...

Bathing Beauty is one of my prints now available |
The five 4'x8' MDO panels were delivered a week ago (they look a lot bigger in my garage than I imagined). I spent the past few days using a latex wood filler to fill gaps in the layered edges, and then today, 4 delightful helpers from Town Center Gallery came by to help me with the primer. Thanks to Hattie Stoddard, Beverly Johnson, and Tom and Rella Heslop - it would have taken me a long time to get it done. Also, thanks to Home Depot here in Santa Maria for donating the primer and rollers!

I've reached a new and exciting milestone on my path to actually being more of a participant in the art field! I've finally had some work made into giclee prints that I hope to be able to sell! In fact, I will go and pick them up today! Can't wait to post them... Anyway, while I was going through what I had to choose from, a couple of issues came to mind. One was that illustration doesn't just fit in any house, so my selections were limited. Of course, most of my work would probably work best in a child's room. The other thing was that, upon closer inspection, many of the things I had considered "done" really weren't up to the "DONE and ready to present to people" level. As a result, I started to consider some redo's on some of my favorites. I'll post some of these upgrades as they happen starting with this one:

OK, I'm following you on FB, Twitter, & have subscribed to your blog! If I win (and I hope I do!), I'd love a print of Pandora's Box!
I follow via GFC and Facebook and Twitter.<br />I love your illustration of Pandora especially, and also the one of Snow White.<br />Thank you for another chance to win!<br />ladyofnarnia(at)yahoo(dot)com
Love your work!
I'm following your blog! If I win, and really I should, I'd like the Little Matchgirl.
Manelle! I had no idea you did this!! It's been so fun to browse your blog and yes, I am now following. I would love a print of Sailing! I love sailing on the open sea and in meditation, that's where I go. My imagination, being as limited as it is, never thought to so sailing through the clouds, but you bet I will now. What a glorious image! Thank you.
While all your work is simply mind blowlingly creative Manelle, Frog Prince would be my pic with Apprentice as a close second. Great job with all you're doing!
Well I made my following of your blog official, and should I happen to win I would love the flying puppet magician.
Hi, Manelle,<br />So, if I looked at your prints first and then start following you am I disqualified? My favorite print that I would frame and hang on my wall is "Wood Elves Leaving Middle Earth" in color.
Your Litte Match Girl captured my heart!<br /><br />I follow your blog and your FB :)
I must say, I love your work. Of your prints, my fave is Pandora's box followed closely by "Wood Elves" b&w.<br />As always, following FB and now the blog.
Wow! They are all so beautiful! I think my favorite is Snow White:) If I win, that's the one I would like.
All right. I'm following your blog. Are you following mine? I'm close to that 200 mark, too. :) I'd love a print of The Little Match Girl. It reminds me of a story I wrote.
Woot! I love contests! I would totally choose "Sailing" if I won!
I already follow you on twitter and now I follow your blog. Love the start of your new Tues Thurs PB posts. If I could win a print, I would choose the Frog Prince (and put it in my daughters room so she remembers she doesn't have to kiss every frog that comes along...just the right one...her prince)
How odd, I was sure I was already following your blog. I guess not though. Anyways, I am NOW following your blog as well as twiiter. Also shared on Google+ Facebook and twitter. I've always loved your Snow White illustration!
I am now following you on twitter and google+. You do beautiful work, and if i won id pick Pandoras Box.
I follow via GFC: allibrary and I was # 196! I like the Apprentice print.<br /><br />Nancy<br />allibrary (at) aol (dot) com
Walking Home for sure...it would look great in our babies room!
I've said this before, but I'll say it again, you are a very talented artist.<br /><br />I'm following your blog, I've posted about you on my blog and on facebook.<br /><br />If I win, I would love Match girl, Pandora's box, Sailing, Snow White, and Walking home. I can narrow it down to the first three, but I am having a hard time choosing between them. Do I have to say only
I am following your blog, &, should I win, I would like the Woodland Elves.
