2. Short blog to let you know I am alive…

I meant to have a new blog post in January, but after doing Knott’s and going to see family, I was a bit worn out to be honest. But that is neither here nor there, I have a few shows coming up soon, plus working on new art along with commissions. Without further ado, let us begin with some shows.

Long Beach Comic Expo is coming up on February 28 and March 1st at the Long Beach Convention Center. I love doing show and hope to see everyone there.logo_expo

Then it is off to do the 3rd Annual Spook Show on March 7th at the Halloween Club in La Mirada. I did this show last year and had a blast; great music, horror, and food.spookshow3-halloweenclub-costume-superstoreFinally I will be ending March with two big shows. First up is Monsterpalooza on March 27th-29th at the Marriott Burbank Hotel and Convention Center. Well I won’t be there, but Shawn will be there representing me. 3. Times are a changing (along with the name)…

I am there honestly, right behind the tower of mini prints.

This has been on my mind for awhile and on the long road trip I had more time to think about it. The business has grown so much in the past couple of years and the direction I want to take it has altered slightly too. The upcoming year there will be some changes, expanding products offered, a book in the works (Shawn get back to writing!), plus some creative, weird stuff from Shawn (I said get back to writing!), along with first and foremost a change in the name of the business.

There are many reasons for the name change, some minor, but  the major one has been growth. I use to share a six foot table with my friend Koko Candles and now I can barely contain everything on an eight foot table, much less a six foot table (which is why I am exploring having booths at certain cons next year). This rapid rate of growth could not have happened without someone very special in my life, Shawn. He has been supportive of me through all of this; he has given me creative ideas, does a lot of grunt work for me, and as he says his official title is, Lifter of Heavy Things. He is very much my partner in this business and I am appreciative of his contributions to the growth of it.

So on a long trip through the desert night of Arizona, Shawn and I started kicking around different names… some good, some hilariously bad. During the banter we had going back and forth it got me thinking; I love the darker side of things and Shawn loves horror (he always disappears from the booth during horror cons to spend money), and we always seem to be on the road lately. The name crystallized in my mind and it just seemed so appropriate. Without further ado I present the new name of the business…

This will not be an immediate transition, so Diana Levin Art will still exist. I will still be creating new art and jewelry to have at the shows as these will be the cornerstone of the business as it expands.

4. Catching Up with Blogging

We ain’t afraid of no dinosaur!

I realized that I have not posted in a while. With all the shows I have been traveling to, I barely had time to keep up with my blog. Since I have posted, I was writing about the Wild West Fest at the Calico Ghost Town in Yermo, California. All around it was a fun show; we stayed with my in-laws at a nice hotel in Barstow for the weekend of the show. It was also my birthday so we all went out to eat the legendary Peggy Sue’s Diner on Sunday night.

Then it was off to Seattle again for Emerald City Comicon.  It was an amazing show, with wonderful people. I have to give a big thank you to Sarah for the help at my booth (allowing me a few moments of rest to stretch my legs). The atmosphere was electric and everyone has my gratitude for making me feel so welcome up there. One of these days I will get Shawn up there so that I can leave him at the booth and go explore the city hehehe.

But that will only happen if the infamous Monsterpalooza does not fall on the same weekend as ECCC, like it did this year. Here is Shawn to tell you more. Shawn here and I have three words: It… was… awesome! I had a great time, though I wished Diana was there so that I could have walked around to check out more things. Oh well, there is always next year. All the fans were amazing and thank you to everyone for supporting Diana. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Beware the Gotham Bunnies

Thank you Shawn, so following those two shows was Wondercon. Oh how I love this show and it is one of my favorites. Not only did I get to see all my regular fans from SoCal, but Shawn being there allowed me to leave my booth from time to time to browse the artist alley. I got to catch up with some friends and meet some amazing artist for the first time. This was also the debut of my latest in the Terrible Trio series… the Gotham Bunnies, so cute, yet so evil.

Then I had a rare weekend off, and then it was time to get ready for Texas Frightmare Weekend. I was excited as I had never been to Dallas-Fort Worth, so this was a great opportunity to reach a new fan base. After a less than sterling start of the day (looking at you American Airlines) I made it to the show with only a half hour to set up. But after that it was one of the best weekends I have ever had at a show. It was intense, amazing, overwhelming at times and I can’t wait to go back next year. I may even bring Shawn along for this trip, I think he would enjoy the show very much.

Back to Southern California the following week for the Bat’s Day in the Park Black Market. This is always a fun show to do where I tend to pick up some great little pieces. It is only a one day show, so a bit more laid back and relaxing compared to the multi-day shows. Though being so close to Disney makes me want to go buy a ticket and go on some rides.

Finally last but not least was another trip up to Seattle (seriously, maybe I need to rent a room out there) for Crypticon. This was a great little horror convention with some pretty cool guests. I am starting to recognize a few people that have seen me at some of the area shows and meet some new fans. Thanks once again to Tamara of The Mystical Apothecary for being my traveling buddy once again.

Whoa, I was a bit more behind on this blog than I realized. Mid year resolution, I shall be better about updating my blog in a more timely manner. I have four more shows to do before I take some time off to do some more art and work on some upcoming projects, one of which is a book.

6. LTUE through a cold-fogged lens

As those who went to LTUE can attest, it seems that I caught a bad cold either on the plane or on the moment my foot touched Utah soil, and I was a little bit out of it during the con. But even so, I had a great time, and got to catch up with a lot of old friends, meet new people, and even sit down with some writers I might work with someday. Hopefully I didn’t give them a cold while I was at it.

Normally I’d give a more complete run-down, but others might remember it more clearly than I could due to the fog of this cold, which I’m still getting over. I had the worst time remembering people’s names—I even blanked on the names of long-time friends. :( Sorry, guys! You know I really love you, but names aren’t my forte even when I’m thinking straight, and this week it was very hard to think straight.

I was able to think straight on my panels at least (though with moments of “you go ahead, I forgot what I was going to say”), and my Writing Cross-Culturally presentation was both well-attended (wow, standing room only!) and included attendees who had some great questions. For those who have come to this blog looking for the questions we discussed at the end of class, go to my SCBWI wrap-up, where I summarized those same questions. Also, if you didn’t get the handout and were looking for the links and resources I gave out in class, comment or email me with a request for it, and I can get you the Word document. Or perhaps I can just post it here, but later, once I’ve caught up on all I missed when I was out of the office.

7. Karen Sandler signing at LTUE

For you TANKBORN fans in Utah, not only is Karen Sandler joining me this Wednesday night at the BYU Linguistics Event before LTUE and attending LTUE itself, she’s signing at the mass signing this Friday night from 8:30 to 10 pm. For more details, check out the LTUE schedule. Well, kind of. It hasn’t been updated with the change (the signing was originally supposed to start at 8 pm) and I’m not sure what room it’s in. If you come to LTUE, though, I’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out from the printed handouts.

8. BYU event before LTUE

Life, the Universe, and Everything is NEXT WEEK! That means I’ll be seeing many of you then. If you’re unable to attend LTUE, though, and are in the area, you should check out this event. The imprint launched fall 2011 with Tankborn, Wolf Mark, and Galaxy Games: The Challengers, and will follow up with BYU graduate Bryce Moore’s book this spring, Vodnik. 9. Notes from SCBWI Winter Conference

I had such a great time talking to everyone at SCBWI Winter Conference this weekend and teaching the multicultural books breakout. In one of my sessions, we didn’t get to this part of my notes, and for the others, we had to go through the list quickly because it was so long.

One thing we talked about is how the industry itself is working on awareness and furthering diversity among the books themselves and future publishing personnel. Last night, we launched the CBC Diversity Committee, which is working on these goals with other publishing partners. We have a brand-new website (which will gain content as time goes on) and plan a variety of events such as panels discussing diversity, visiting school career days and job fairs, and just continuing the conversation about diversity in all platforms, such as social media. See also some press coverage, where Robin Adelsen, the CBC’s executive director, shares our goals:

To make a difference, we will focus on recruitment by visiting high schools and colleges, providing resources on the CBC Diversity blog and promoting discourse by hosting panel and roundtable discussions.

I also promised attendees of my session that I would share with them the list of questions we discussed that might help us to know what questions to ask when thinking about deep cultural differences, whether we’re talking about writing cross-culturally in the sense of writing from a perspective not our own, or whether we’re thinking about reaching a readership that isn’t entirely our own culture, and if perhaps there might be some ways to express/acknowledge those differences in our writing. In the case of writing from our own cultural perspective, these questions may be less useful, but nonetheless I think they might get us all thinking about how culture affects decisions we make—not as a form of conditioning, at least no more than any other culture, but as a framework by which we interpret the world. Thinking about these questions may help us in our writing as we apply them to characterization, worldbuilding, plot (how a character reacts to certain problems may certainly be affected by cultural attitudes, whether he or she goes with mainstream culture or not, as does how other characters interact with that person, which eventually over the course of a book turns into a sequence of actions that turn into plot), setting, and so forth.

These questions are from chapter 9 of the excellent book A Beginner’s Guide to the Deep Culture Experience: Beneath the Surface by Joseph Shaules. The author was writing to an audience of potential U.S. expats living abroad, with the idea of helping them to think about cultural differences and ways to adapt to their new countries and enjoy the journey, but as I read it, I found so much that is applicable to ways we might think of culture in terms of writing about it, not to mention the adaptation experiences I had living with college roommates from other countries The intercultural experience goes both ways—though I didn’t live in another country, and so my experience wasn’t quite as deep, I still found I had to adapt and learn from my roommates if I wanted to get along with them.

I highly recommend reading the whole book, or at least chapter 9, where he expands on these questions and discusses how the answers are not either-or, good/bad—just choices that don’t have a value attached to them that show how different people choose to handle universal human questions in different ways.

11. You already know I’m a geek and a mom.

12. Beyond Orcs and Elves: Diversity in Science Fiction and Fantasy for Young Readers, part 1

Here you go! The first installment. Note that this was written to be spoken, so sometimes the diction might seem a little weird for a blog post. But I’m just going to leave it as-is, because you’ll get the idea.

Beyond Orcs and Elves: Diversity in Science Fiction and Fantasy for Young Readers

Ursula Le Guin, way back in 1975 said:Slide2

The women’s movement has made most of us conscious of the fact that SF [science fiction, but let’s include fantasy too] has either totally ignored women or presented them as squeaking dolls subject to instant rape by monsters—or old-maid scientists desexed by hypertrophy of the intellectual organs—or, at best, loyal little wives or mistresses of accomplished heroes. Male elitism has run rampant in SF. But is it only male elitism? Isn’t the “subjection of women” in SF merely a symptom of a whole which is authoritarian, power-worshiping, and intensely parochial?

The question involved here is the question of The Other—the being who is different from yourself. This being can be different from you in its sex; or in its annual income; or in its way of speaking and dressing and doing things; or in the color of its skin, or the number of its legs and heads.

Slide3That was 35 years ago. (I know. I can’t believe it myself.) How are we doing today? I want to talk about the inclusion in speculative fiction for children and young adults of what 74% of the book-buying public might consider the Other in terms of mostly racial but also cultural differences. Perhaps this will help you in writing fantastic creatures or aliens, as well, this idea of writing the Other, but I want to focus on the human element today.

You may or may not know that fantasy as a genre started long before Tolkien was born. In fact, people have been telling fantasy stories for as long as there have been people. After all, the first fairy tales weren’t just what we now refer to as “myths,” creation stories and just-so stories. They were also fantastical tales told to pass the time or to warn children not to wander in the woods alone.

But let’s just start with the Victorian era, which had its own set of rules, morals and mores, body of literature, and cultural influences. We start with writers like George MacDonald, one of the primary influences on both Tolkien and Lewis, who wrote such tales as The Princess and the Goblin, The Light Princess, and The Princess and Curdie. 13. Beyond Orcs and Elves: a prelude

Now that NESCBWI is over, I will be posting parts of my talk, “Beyond Orcs and Elves: Diversity in Fantasy & Science Fiction for Young Readers” here on my blog. I will be breaking it up over the course of several posts—it was designed as a 40-minute–to–hour-long talk, and it’s just too long for one post. Not to mention I have slides I’ll be putting up (someone suggested SlideShare? I’ll have to check it out once I have time to sit down with it) which need to be incorporated somehow.

I haven’t had time, though, to sit down and split up the talk and figure out where the most natural breaks are. I went straight from a busy week last week to a VERY full weekend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (13 critiques and two presentations over the course of three days) to back to work on Monday, which has left me a little shell-shocked, and all I want to do now outside of work is to sleep. You know it’s bad when you can’t even concentrate on the Sarah Jane Adventures even though you’ve been looking forward to watching the last season!

My evening is full tonight, so it will be at least tomorrow night, if not sometime on Thursday (I’m taking the day off to be home for the delivery of my new couch, which I’m excited about) before the first post of the talk is organized. So keep an eye out until then.

15. LTUE pre-game

Well, I don’t know what else to call it. I’m flying in a little early before LTUE in mid-Feb. to visit Rick Walton’s publishing class, and he tells me that editing students will be invited as well. So if you’re a BYU student in one of the writing or editing classes and want to get in on the Q&A session in Rick’s class on the 16th (I’ll be doing a short presentation, but mostly it’ll be Q&A), find out more through your department or contact Rick directly.

If you’re not a BYU student, no fear—just come to LTUE! It’s official that I’ll not only be participating in a number of panels but also giving my diversity in children’s fantasy presentation:

Beyond Orcs and Elves:  Diversity in Fantasy and Science Fiction for Young Readers
Recent cover whitewashing controversies and the internet discussion tagged #RaceFail have brought to light how little diversity can be found in fantasy and science fiction for young readers. We’ll discuss the history of diversity in these books, including diversification through fantasy races that all share the same traits, and ways for authors to consider diversifying their own stories. We’ll also discuss writing cross-culturally, cultural awareness, issues of appropriation, and other things to consider as you write.

16. Life, the Universe, and Everything

Between the holidays, a nasty bout of the flu, and being busy with preparing Fall books for design and getting next spring’s books well on their way, I haven’t had much time to even think about what I’d post here lately. If you’re interested in my flittering day-to-day thoughts, follow me on Twitter—it’s not much more there lately, but it’s more!

I pop in here today to let you know about Life, the Universe, & Everything 29: The Marion K. “Doc” Smith Symposium on Science Fiction and Fantasy. I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about it in previous years—it’s one of the best little cons I’ve ever been to. It’s a local convention run by BYU students and Utah Valley residents who are fantasy & SF buffs. In recent years, it’s always been free. This year, they decided to charge a nominal amount so that the budget woes they’ve had to deal with (the previous venue required them to offer it for free) will be solved. But $20 still isn’t that much for a 2 or 3-day convention, and if you’re a BYU student/staff/faculty, you still get in free.

What will you get for your $20? Pretty much the best that Utah has to offer in science fiction and fantasy—and that’s saying a lot. James Dashner, the author of The Maze Runner, will be the Guest of Honor. My friends, authors Brandon Sanderson and Dan Wells always go (though I don’t see Brandon on the schedule, so something may have come up for him), as well as webcomic artist Howard Tayler (the Writing Excuses trifecta). Tracy Hickman, Jessica Day George, Mette Ivie Harrison, Bree Despain, Janci Olds (who has a book forthcoming from Macmillan), Eric James Stone, Robert J. Defendi, Rebecca Shelley, John Brown, Larry Correia, Julie Wright, Robison Wells, Jake Black…

I know I missed somebody there. Oh—ME!

And it doesn’t matter if you’re an aspiring writer, a pro, or a fan—there’s something there for everyone.

Once my schedule is pinned down a little tighter, I’ll post it here. You’ve got a month to plan–if you’re in Utah (or want to take a trip there), plan for Feb. 17-19 at BYU. It’s no longer in the Wilkinson Center–it’s now hosted by Conferences and Workshops. Register here (or give them a call at the number on that page). That means better parking, even if there are fewer easy lunch options in the Conference Center on campus.

17. Booklists: Touchstone children's/YA fantasy and science fictionBooklists: Touchstone children's/YA f

I'm copying and pasting the last 5 entries that have been missed in the importation, as a temporary fix to figuring out the WordPress problem.]

I'm working on my talk at the Ventura/Santa Barbara SCBWI Writers' Day. In preparation for it, I'm doing a personal review of touchstone children's and YA fantasy and science fiction titles from, say, the late Victorian period forward. Science fiction is tougher---I'm not going to cover pulp novels from the 30s or anything. Perhaps we might start with the 70s or 80s in SF (though I tossed Jules Verne and Robert Heinlein on the list because they do stand out---please advise me of others of similar caliber). I'm heading to the library tomorrow to grab a number of books, and trying to think if I've missed any.

Now, "fantasy" in children's books has a pretty broad definition. I'm going to narrow the focus down to prose novels with human or humanoid main characters. That is, I'm not interested in animal stories (Redwall is awesome, but not the point of what I'm going for) or graphic novels or toy/doll stories (Winnie the Pooh, lovely as he is, doesn't count here, though he does play into the whole British tradition; but no matter, that's not what I'm looking for today). The Wind in the Willows is iffy--it's anthropormorphized animals running around in frock coats and talking in British accents; for our purposes here today I'm going to say we'll leave it off, though I reserve the right to change my mind later. Of course, so is Redwall (without the frock coats), so that helps make my decision in identifying their similarity.

I'm looking for books that a large number of readers would consider a touchstone---not obscure. "Touchstone," as I'm using it here, is a title that's either so popular practically everyone would probably have read it (like Harry Potter) and/or has great literary merit---something with great importance. Hence my list becomes more thin as it comes closer to the present day because I feel like we're a little too close to those books to really be able to pick out that many books (right now) with lasting merit; those will manifest over time. But some do stand out, and I've included them.

Here's my list. Anything you might add? Surely there are more pre-WWII era that I'm forgetting, and I'm sure I'm overlooking something obvious altogether. I've never (gasp) read Andre Norton, for example---hence my request on Twitter & FB for title suggestions---and could use some prompting about what her most memorable/important titles are.

18. A Is for Anansi, NY Comic Con, and TANKBORN

Last weekend I went to the excellent A Is for Anansi conference at NYU, and met a lot of thoughtful people who want to make the world a better place for African American kids. I took a lot of notes and would like to share them at some point, but I'm in the midst of finishing an edit and have only popped online, so I'll have to do it some other time. In the meantime, Hannah in Lee & Low's marketing department took some great notes that she shares here.

I cut out from that conference a little early to pop by New York Comic Con over at the Javitz Center, and the best way I can find to describe it is CROWDED. Apparently something like 90,000 people went over the course of the weekend, but I believe most of them were there Saturday between 1 and 4. Got to see my friends Brandon and Emily Sanderson for a few minutes while Brandon was signing books in the midst of a madhouse (we caught up later in less crowded circumstances), wandered around the significantly less-crowded Artist Alley for a while, said hi to some old Wizards of the Coast coworkers at the Wizards booth, and then the crowds got to me and I made my escape. It helped that I was also in the midst of a Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood marathon on Hulu at home, and watching that sounded much more appealing than shoving through crowds and not really seeing anything. I took my camera with me to take pictures of the costumes---and there were some really good ones---but there wasn't any room to get a good candid shot, so I didn't bother. Sorry--blog posts are always more fun with pictures. (I've taken a number of pictures lately, but haven't had the time to actually upload them online.)

Thirdly, and BEST of all, I can finally announce our third acquisition at Tu Books, making our third book and rounding out the Fall 2011 season! As reported in PW Children's Bookshelf yesterday:

Stacy Whitman at Lee & Low Books bought North American rights to Tankborn by Karen Sandler, for publication in fall 2011 as part of the Tu Books imprint launch list. The dystopian YA title is about best friends Kayla and Mishalla, genetically engineered slaves on the planet Loka, whose developing friendships with higher-status boys lead them to question the strict caste system of their world. Sandler has written more than 17 adult romance titles; this is her first YA. Lindsay Ribar and Matt Bialer at Sanford J. Greenburger Associates brokered the deal.

I'm SO EXCITED. The lineup for Tu for Fall 2011 is going to be awesome. We've got a YA paranormal thriller (I call it Burn Notice with werewolves), a middle grade space adventure (Olympics in space), and a YA dystopian with two main characters you're going to love. As time goes on, I'll be able to tell you more about Wolf Mark, Galaxy Games, and Tankborn; for now, the teasers will have to suffice!

Speaking of which, as I said, I'm in the midst of an edit that I'm trying to get back to the author before I leave for the weekend. Have a good one!

19. Is Being an Actor Worth It?

With being an actor, comes certain responsibilities that you might not have asked for in the first place. Like one of them that almost all actors have to deal with on a daily basis is: Being famous. 

You may be thinking, but being famous would be an advantage right? Well, being famous has it’s advantages but it also has disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is of course, fame. Fame brings many things to you, that you might not want. Like for instance, people following you around trying to get a good picture of you or trying to exploit you like the many reporters do to make a quick buck. You have to be careful about what you wear, what you do, how you act, and sometimes you can’t even be yourself around other people. Another disadvantage about being an actor/actress would be the competition for jobs. You have to really try and try to get good at acting and if you don’t get a job then it will discourage you or if you can’t get enough jobs then you might not make enough cash. The thing is, you have to really compete with other people to get a good job like the one for the Harry Potter movies or the Twilight movie. Both earned millions and millions of dollars but also both were great movies. If you get to be in a great movie, you have a chance to get fame and money. But acting can be a tedious career because of the fame and competition.

But, being famous has it’s advantages. Now not all these advantages are, what people say, ethnically Correct. You can use your fame to sway people choices in life, or make them believe in what they didn’t believe in before. Also, fame has it’s advantages money wise, the money can be used to help people or even the economy. Like for example, the actor Will Smith donated a large amount of money to assist Katrina victims. He also donated $4,600 to the presidential campaign of Democrat Barack Obama. - Told to me by my friend, Krause.

Being an actor can be extremely fun though. After watching countless hours of interviews with different actors by reporters, I find out how fun being an actor can really be. Like for example, in the movie “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, has tons of fun playing the main characters. I’ve watched a lot of different interviews between these three actors in general because they seem to have a lot of experience in acting and has tons of fun on set. Now not all movies can be as fun as Harry Potter, so I’ve watched other actor interviews from different movies like “Transformers 2″ and “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull”. 

I for one, have no acting experience except for high school drama class. So, I might not be the best one to judge if it is worth it or not, but it definitely can be a great career to take. Now for the pros and cons about being an actor.

Pros:

  • Money
  • Friends
  • Fun Career
  • Fans

Cons:

  • Paparazzi
  • Fame
  • Rumors
  • Exploiting

These pros and cons may vary from different actors but that’s mainly what I see the pros and cons about being an actor is.

20. An announcement, of sorts

I was recently asked to the LDS Storymakers Writers Conference as a guest editor. If you're LDS or interested in the LDS writing world (including as an LDS author writing for the national market), I hear it's an excellent conference. (This one will be my first.) As you'll see from the link I just noted above, my bio says that I was formerly with Mirrorstone (which we all know) and that I now consult for Tor (which few have known up to this point).

I've postponed announcing the news on this blog because I'm still working on contracting my first book, so I didn't want to announce anything prematurely, but since it was okay to say so for the conference, I'll go ahead and let you know here, too: I am looking for books to acquire as a consulting editor for Tor's children's book lines (Starscape, Tor Teen, etc.). This just means that I will acquire books on a freelance basis rather than in-house, though the duties are pretty much the same. Tor has a lot of editors who work with them in a consulting capacity, and it seems to be a pretty successful model for them.

Right now I am not open to unagented submissions unless I've had previous contact with you through a conference or a submission at Mirrorstone where I asked for a full manuscript (or a revision of that full manuscript). I'm just getting started, and I want to be sure that I keep the field narrow for the moment. As time goes on and if this freelancing continues to succeed, then I will open up to more unagented submissions. So if you're LDS and can make it to Storymakers, the conference might be a good place for you to come and meet me!

I don't have submission guidelines yet, but as time goes on I will post them here. I will continue to run my critiques as a separate business for the foreseeable future, as well.

Here's hoping that the snow (snooooow, ooooooh!) will let up enough for the roads, and be well and good deep everywhere else! I personally think that sometime in the future, someone should invent something that funnels all the snow to just where we want it, thus eliminating the mess and slush in the street and on the sidewalk. Pretty, perfect snow everywhere you look--except for the road! :)

21. Back, but busy

As you can probably tell from my two-week posting absence, I had a great time on my vacation and at BYU Writing for Young Readers. Not much news to report--at least, nothing that would take the few minutes I have to post right now--so I'll just leave you with my favorite shot from the conference. 

Background: Shannon Hale lives in Salt Lake City, an hour from where the Writing for Young Readers conference was held, and she was going to make it to the local author event they had, but ended up not being able to go. Martha Mihalick of Greenwillow, the other guest editor, and I were sorely disappointed by that. So we sent her our sad faces.



Happy ending: Shannon was able to make it later in the week to say hi. Yay for seeing an old friend!

22. IRA and travel by air

Perhaps I'm a little late to the discussion of this, as I haven't had time to keep up on people's blogs lately, but did you hear about this? After May 1, half the airlines I know of are going to start charging for checking a second bag. That means I'm screwed at Christmas, when I often go home for over a week (large bag) and take presents and nearly the kitchen sink with me (another large bag). I had joked about this day coming, but I'm still a little surprised it is. This is only going to make me less likely to travel by plane. Which means less likely to travel, period, because I ain't driving anywhere either. Trains, perhaps? Bah. Guess I'll ship presents by mail when I go home for Christmas this year.

Wherefore art thou, high speed rail?*

In other news, in the first week of May I'll be down in Atlanta for the International Reading Association annual conference. I really like this conference. I went for the first time last year when it was held in Toronto. I never need to take a whole lot with me for trade shows--unless we've forgotten something, but then we usually FedEx big boxes of stuff to the show floor--but I always end up bringing a suitcase full of books home with me. But not if I have to pay $25 for it.

*Well, that would only help me with about half the country. Seattle to Atlanta, for example, not so much.

23. Back from World Horror (don't say that with a Utah accent)

Just a quick post to say I had a great time at World Horror Convention in Salt Lake City. It was really a whirlwind! I met tons of people at pitch sessions and in the hallways, was able to be on two panels, went to dinner with so many people--see Agent Kristin's blog for a report of our discussion at dinner!--interviewed a couple-three authors for Wizards' Discoveries line, and even got to sit down with old friends Brandon Sanderson and Dan Wells for their Writing Excuses podcast, which will air in a few weeks (they're on Episode 8, I think, and we recorded 12 or so). Also worked on a for-now super-secret project with Rebecca Shelley, assistant to R.D. Henham of Red Dragon Codex fame.

So it was a very full, very exhausting weekend! It was fun to stay with a friend and catch up and play with her two-year-old daughter, too, and to see so many good friends, and sad that I didn't have enough time to catch up with everyone. I had a great time, and thanks to the con organizers who invited me!

24. Here's one for you

As I mentioned, I have been invited to speak at the BYU Writing for Young Readers conference. I've been thinking about what I'd like to talk about, because they need the title of my talk soon, and I've been inspired by my friend [info]raisinfish to tackle an age-old question: will writing to the market give you a better chance to get published?

I think this is a complicated question in children's literature, because there are competing interests that must be considered.

But it's an interesting topic to me, certainly.

What do you all think? If you were attending a conference to hear me talk, would this be of interest to you? Any suggestions on a snappier way of phrasing the title? (That particular phrasing was right off the top of my head--I know, it's SO clever!)

25. Almost midnight post

If you haven't guessed yet, January was a crazy month. February is shaping up to be a crazy month as I try to get ahead on my March workload, which will be the craziest of all. I kinda have more books to work on in March than pretty much ever. And it's great, because they're all really exciting books! But wow, sometimes it's exhausting.

So what have I been doing recently? Well, I've got several books in the Hallowmere series in various stages of the editing process*, and I'm working on Bronze Dragon Codex, the followup to last month's release of Red Dragon Codex. (Late night post=no links, sorry. Google is your friend.) I've got a couple other things in the works that I'll be able to announce as soon as the ink is dry.

In the midst of all that, I try set aside time every week to respond to submissions, but as you can probably guess, that's not at the top of my priority list this month. But I promise, I'm working on it! It's definitely part of the plan.

Then at the end of March, I'll be in Salt Lake City for World Horror Convention to take pitch sessions, and then in June I'll be at BYU for the Writing for Young Readers conference. Whew! But that's waaay in the future. For now, I just have to go to bed so I can be clearer tomorrow than this sinus infection is letting me be right now. All I want for Christmas is my two frontal sinuses, please. Maxillary will do.


*Most recently, volume 5 of Hallowmere, Queen of the Masquerade, by Tiffany Trent and Amanda M. Jenkins. Tears! Tears for the beauty, I tell you!
