28. Illustration Friday .:. Cocoon

I feel inside a cocoon when walking around with my ipod. I have to be extra careful, when crossing streets.

Me siento dentro de un capullo cuando camino con mi ipod. Tengo que ser super cuidadosa, cuando cruzo calles.

29. Draw yourself happy

Ever have one of those days where you just can't find happy?  I did.  And when that happens, the creative side of me shuts down.  It's a form of artist-block and it's very icky.  So after a day of mopey ickiness I decided I would force myself to draw myself happy as a form of therapy...here is what happened when pencil touched paper.

Beckkittenhugger1

Oh how I love to force my kitties to love me.  And of course the wiener dogs always laugh because they know they're next!  So if you're having a gloomy icky day, draw yourself happy and see if it helps.

31. .: Flea Circus :.

An illustration for Monday Artday, the topic this week is circus. I have never seen a flea circus, and I don´t really know if they actually exist. If the fleas look familiar, its because they come from an older illustration, you can see it here.. Although they were not so active in that illustration, they were kind of dying.

33. A Floating Provencal Sunflower

40FloatingSunflower

I bought a bunch of sunflowers from the markets the other day, they are so wonderfully cheerful. It's also the first time in my life that I've seen fields absolutely full of sunflowers, a sea of bobbing yellows and oranges capturing the joys of the day, I love it.

Am not so crazy about the drawing though, I'm not quite sure why but it seems pale in comparison to the real thing. I haven't captured the vibrancy and am a bit disappointed -- maybe next time ...

34. Grandparenting

My mom, aka Grandma Sylvie, inspires me and has encouraged my writing ever since I was a little girl. She was the one who told me about the Examiner and told me to apply. I got accepted within a week and have been having a great time writing for them - and making money!

I asked her to put some guest posts together for me so that I can have a grandparent's voice and wisdom of her years of parenting experience to share and include here. She's awesome and continues to inspire me with everything she says and does. Here's her latest:

I worked the gift shop (volunteer work) yesterday and saw a good idea for me to start journaling again. I haven't journaled for about 10 years or longer.

There was a book there called "Simplicity Journal." On each page were the words: Happy, Funny, Heart, Good, Challenge, Learned, and Other Thoughts with enough space next to each word to write one word to a short paragraph.

My words for today are:

Happy
- I am happy that Hip_M0M called me while on her road trip. It was good to talk to her and hear her voice.

Healthy
- I took a walk and walked farther than planned. I saw an old man getting his mail and he told me to keep walking. He wished he could walk but can't. It is amazing how a few words of encouragement can make this 58-year-old body move.

Hip
- I play my favorite music. Right now I am listening to the soundtrack of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Grandparenting- I look at the grandsons' photos and pray that they are happy and safe.

Take care and keep smiling.

43. Lucky Boy

One day once upon a time, much like this very day , there lived in a place that was full of magic a very lucky boy …
His name was Very Lucky Boy and he was very happy. He had Very good friends and they were happy people also…
It so happened that people who didn’t live where the Lucky Boy lived were greedy and tried to take all the happiness away by destroying the economy of the Lucky people and making the things they believed in tarnish in the light of the sun…
It was so bad that one or two of the Lucky Boy’s favorite people started telling little white lies and trying to make up stories…
Lucky Boy saw this and it made him sad but before becoming bitter, Lucky Boy was even luckier and found some old friends he had not seen in many years who were still happy and did not believe in sad, unlucky things…
They came to lucky Boy and said great things that filled him with so much hope and happiness it drove the sad thoughts back to where they started and Lucky Boy was even happier than before…
He was so happy that even on a winter day he saw rainbows and blue skies…

45. Joy

I'm feeling joyful today because I love my relationships. I am missing Mx so much today [she left for NYC for school] but excited about her following her dreams. And so today, I'm doing everything that makes me happy. I started with a 2.5 mile run. I just joined Moms-in-Motion and can't wait to see how it will help me with my fitness goals. The women I've met are amazing. If you like to walk/hike/run or are thinking about maybe making this year the year you want to try a triathalon or marathon, check it out. Or, if you just want to walk/hike with women and make friends check it out too:) I love to give back to the community and this group gives back in a big way.

I love Beyonce. This video puts a big smile on my face.

I'm nearing the completion of my novel inventory as per Darcy Pattison's "Novel Metamorphosis." Very excited about this. Seeing the story in a whole new way. And, to that end, I'm going to do The Shrunken Manuscript exercise and look forward to seeing how that will help me shape my story.

Thought this was interesting:

I wonder what I might see when I look at my manuscript in this way.

48. Aw...Quit Your Complaining!

That's our goal. After months (years) of complaining about everything under the sun, my husband and I are trying to give up the habit. We saw a story on CBS Sunday Morning about "A Complaint Free World" and decided that this was our last hope. In case you're not familiar with the concept:

Our words are powerful indicators of our thoughts, and our thoughts create our lives. When we complain, we draw to us negative things because we put out negative energy. Therefore, one of the most important things we do is to learn not to complain.

And, in order to remind ourselves not to complain (for a small, tax-deductible fee), we were sent purple bracelets to wear. Apparently, you're supposed to put it on one wrist or the other. If (when) you find yourself complaining about ANYTHING, you must remove the bracelet and put it on the opposite wrist. The objective is to wear it on one wrist exclusively for 21 straight days.

Now, please tell me how this is possible in a world of never-ending war and astronomical gas prices?!

(Oh. Hang on a minute while I switch wrists)

...Politics being thrown at you 24/7??

(Sorry. Gotta change)

And, HAVE YOU BOUGHT A GALLON OF MILK LATELY??

(Excuse me, again)

Not to mention the fact that there are three houses in foreclosure in our neighborhood and several more with rusty, faded For Sale signs.

(Uh-oh. Wonder how strong these bracelets are? Hope they can handle lots of stretching)

Well, you get the idea. Here's the link to the website, if you dare. Bwwahahahah...

A Complaint Free World

P.S. We also bought bracelets for our kids and friends!

49. On Blurbing

Maybe Lisa Yee's recent comment regarding her blurb for Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree made me think of this. Maybe it's the warm spring weather and the dogwood (or whatever the heck it is) that's poised to bloom outside the Central Children's Room window. In any case, it's springtime and a young woman's thoughts inevitably turn to blurbing. It's an odd thing, isn't it? The thought that I like this author therefore, ipso facto, I like this NEW author too. Nice and simple.

The post Blurbing Blurbage (I could not in good conscience steal this, though every corpuscle in my body was screaming to do just that) is a great bit from an established writer on how he narrows down the books he'd care to blurb. The perils of success are fraught with (to quote Roger Sutton against his will) hurty feelings.
