1. Partridge in a Pear Tree Patterns

I painted this watercolour Partridge in a Pear Tree illustration almost a year ago, blogged here. As the festive season is almost upon us once more, I pulled it out of the 'archives' to create some patterns that I'll place on fabric, gift wrap, tea towels, cards, etc ... though it's taking me some time due to the slow internet connection out here in my temporary 'digs'.

Here are the 3 pattern variations:

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-1-by-Floating-Lemons

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-2-by-Floating-Lemons

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-3-by-Floating-Lemons

I then had to figure out a simple coordinating background pattern, and as I love stripes ...

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-1-stripes-by-Floating-Lemons

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-2-stripes-by-Floating-Lemons

Those stripes could be a tad paler, perhaps? Still, a sweet pattern for Christmas nonetheless? I'm also going to take the partridge off and keep just the pear tree as an all-year-round pattern, I've decided. I like it.

I wish all of you a sweet, colourful, delightful week. If you feel like getting some Christmas shopping done early and are curious as to how the Partridge in a Pear Tree illustration looks on some lovely home wares and gifts, I have the non-stripey ones up already over at Society6, so just click HERE to take a peek. Or HERE for the patterned version. I'll be blogging the cards and gift-wrap papers over at my Floating Lemons Treats blog this coming week. Cheers.

2. Watercolour: Painted Flowers

I am going to have to apologise in advance as blogging is going to be a bit erratic in the next couple of months, as I'm dashing around clearing things up and packing. Yes, packing. More on that later ... Meanwhile, here's a little paint doodle I did a few months ago that I've finally cleaned up and created a pattern with:

Painted-Flowers-by-Floating-Lemons

And here's the original sketch:

Painted-Flowers-sketch-by-Floating-Lemons

I left all the painted imperfections in this time. I normally photoshop them out, but I liked them here, it's oddly childlike and simple but sweet. Well, that's my opinion ... what do you think?

Wishing you wonderful days of sunshine and all things good. Cheers.

3. Pattern Design: Pop Flowers Collection

I'm still working on different colourways for my Into the Woods collection, but meanwhile, here's another new mini-collection that I've designed for spring and summer. It's wonderfully bright and cheerful, with lots of flowers that pop, and coordinating little florettes (well, that's what I call them) and stripes of curvy leaves ... wonderful for outdoor parties and get-togethers in the sunshine.

I've already placed in onto tons of lovely goodies for the home, kitchen, and on gift boxes and matching cards and wrapping paper. Click here for a peek at a Pop Flowers table setting, and on the links below to pop over to the stores where it's on a whole range of sweet products:

4. Pattern Design: Into The Woods Collection

I took a course from Pattern Observer, called Mastering Your Market, at the beginning of the year, but never had the time to showcase the pattern designs that evolved from it. It's about time I posted them, as it was an excellent course and I learned so much from it.

The patterns I created during class were very different from those I was used to designing - one reason I so thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, as it forced me to think and see from another perspective. Here's just one of them, Into the Woods ...

  Into-the-Woods-pattern

I was curious to see how it would look on bedding, so of course I made a mock-up from it ... what do you think?

In-the-Woods-mockup

I'm going to play with different colour variations to see how it might turn out, but was very pleased with this final result and a good review from it too. Now it's time for me to really go into the woods with the dogs for our daily walk.

Wishing you a fantastic day. Cheers.

5. Sketches: Cats, Blobs and Feathered Friends

Yes, I love studying. So I've just started on The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design's Module 4, having taken the previous 3 Modules last year and loved them. The e-courses are doing me a ton of good and, if anything, letting me know how much I have as yet to learn about art and design. It's the first week of ABSPD, and I've been sketching Things and Characters. Here's a bit of what I've come up with so far. I'm calling this first one "Cat Blobs" ...

Cat blobs by floating lemons

I don't know about you lot, but I really want it on a print and, oddly enough, a tea towel - perhaps even a journal/notebook! The second one was just organic blobs really, and I'm not sure where it came from but quite liked it:

Organic blobs by floating lemons

And this final one was an attempt to sketch birds. OK, it needs more work, but I can see a few there that can be improved on and used for something later, what do you think? Any favourites?

I'm not too sure of how that cat got in the bottom of the page, but it probably thought the birds just too good to resist. I'm off to sketch more today, let's see what pops up. Can you tell that I'm thoroughly enjoying this?

WIshing you a day full of pleasant surprises. Cheers.

6. Sketches: Positive Energy, More Jelly, and Tulips

I'm working on a few different projects at the moment, all in progress, all squeezed in whenever I have a few minutes free. Here's where I was at the beginning of the week:

Sketches-by-Floating-Lemons-1

I'm glad to say that I'm pretty much done with the "I Choose to Fill Myself with Positive Energy" text design for the April free printable (for subscribers to the Floating Lemons monthly newsletter of course!), and I'll reveal all when the time comes. Meanwhile ...

Sketches-by-Floating-Lemons-2

I went a completely different direction with my Jelly assignment for MATS Bootcamp, and have managed to totally confuse myself. Should I go with something more along the lines of last weeks sketches, here, or stick to a slightly more geometric rendering of jelly moulds, as above? argh. We shall see. I may have to sketch a lot more jelly before deciding.

Meanwhile, here's the progress on a sketch I'm doing that will, perhaps, end up as a Thinking of You card up at the Two Smiles for HP (Hewlett-Packard) site.

Sketches-by-Floating-Lemons-3

I drew it, scanned it in and decided to experiment with some brand new digital pastel brushes that I purchased from Kyle T Webster. Oh my, I love them. Now that I've been deprived of Corel Painter (it just will not work since the last OS update and I don't want to invest and buy the upgrade only to discover that doesn't work either. I was, needless to say, hugely disappointed) these, along with his real watercolour brushes, are making digital painting a delight once more.

Here's a quick peek at what I've done so far ...

Sketches-by-Floating-Lemons-4

I'm using them exactly as I would my pencils on paper and there are layers and layers of colour being built up. Still have a way to go as yet, but I'm quite pleased with the way it's turning out so far.

Back to work! Wishing you a wonderful day loving what you do and doing what you love. Cheers.

7. Digital Art: Marigolds from the Garden

Marigolds digital floating lemons

Snapped photos of some marigolds from the garden, erased the background on Photoshop and then popped them into Corel Painter and used oil brushes to repaint them. Back into Photoshop for a cleanup, and here they are.

Then played around a bit with filters to see if enhancing them further would give me extra-ordinary results. Came up with the result below and I do like it, though I think I prefer the colours and contrasts of the original above. Still, there's something slightly crazy about the version below that appeals to the 'need-to-experiment-more' side of my nature that's demanding my attention at present.

8. Watercolour: Orchid Blossom

Orchid blossom watercolour

This one is for my mother. Please keep in mind the fact that I'm a beginner and still experimenting, and excuse all the mistakes that you more proficient watercolourists (is there such a word?) will probably be pointing out, as I'm playing without training or rules (Tons of fun!). Still my mother likes it and that's what counts, right?

Here's a few progress shots:

I used watercolour pencils at the end just to clean up and add some detail. Now, off to think of something else to paint ...

Have a wonderful day. Cheers.

9. Doodle Day: Branches

I usually doodle into a small moleskine journal that sits beside me and gets picked up whenever I have to wait for something to happen, such as when I'm uploading large images to one of my stores. I've been flipping through its pages recently, and found this tree silhouette, so of course decided to see if I could take it a bit beyond its scribbly confines to and use it on cards or gifts somewhere somehow ... Here's the original sketch, warts and all:

18-tree-silhouette

And here are some of the steps I worked on. First I 're-painted' the background digitally so it wouldn't look so marker-pen-ish:

18-tree-silhouette-2

I then had the brilliant (debatable I know) idea of working on the tree itself:

18-tree-silhouette-3

And finally, as I have Valentine's Day ideas in mind, I carved a heart on the trunk ...

18-tree-silhouette-4

All of the above was done in Corel Painter 12 (I love it!) and Adobe Photoshop. I'm a mere beginner at both but I couldn't live without them now.

I'm still undecided as to which one to use or whether to use it at all, though I guess I could put up some cards with the carved heart on it and see if anyone would like that for Valentine's Day. Would you send it to someone you loved? Cheers.

10. Poinsettia Joy: A new Surface Design Pattern

I am, very slowly, learning more about Surface Design. And discovering that I'm loving it. It's certainly not a simple process, but I do love puzzles and that probably helps, as putting the separate pieces together to make a cohesive (and aesthetically pleasing!) whole is definitely a large part of the overall process. I just hope that I'm getting it right.

Following on from my Daisy Joy, I've drawn 5 Poinsettia plants in the same style, and attempted once more to create a pattern from them. Here's one of the painted Poinsettias, and below that are the fabrics I've designed from them.

55 Poinsettia Flower

As the Poinsettia plant is so closely associated with Christmas, I've picked cheery seasonal colours for the backgrounds ...

11. Daisy Joy: Birth & Evolution of a Pattern

I've been increasingly fascinated by surface design lately. I've always loved patterns but it never occurred to me that I might one day be able to create some of my own. Recently, being able to design on household products has driven me to study the formation of patterns, and I'm slowly learning, researching, and experimenting. Here are the results so far:

46 Daisy Joy pattern
I started off by drawing some daisies, then scanning them and digitally painting them in Corel Painter 12 before I took them back into photoshop to apply a few effects. Then it was time to pick background colours, never an easy task for me and it usually takes me hours of nail-biting indecision but I finally came up with three ...

46 Daisy Joy pattern 2

The above turquoise blue was my favourite, but it seemed to work just as well against the chantilly pink and gold yellow (see below). I was aiming for a cheerful, bright and joyful look. Hope I achieved it. The background seemed a little subdued for some products, so I applied stripes in a lighter colour, I then picked a few daisies to enlarge and highlight, and this is the end result:

12. Orange Flowers Sketch

Orange Flowers

The weather has turned from unusual freeze to spring-like sun and warmth here in Provence. So out I marched to inspect my post-frost garden and do some much needed clearing up.

Once I'd done with pruning away frozen bits, weeding (they seem to have survived exceptionally well, of course), generally cleaning up and watering, I went back in to flip through garden magazines and was inspired enough to do a quick coloured pencil sketch of what I can only call either deep yellow or pale orange daisies ... well, flowers of a sort.

Enjoyed myself thoroughly though. Time to start planning the garden for spring and summer I think. Cheers!

13. Purple Artichokes sketch-in-progress 2

10 Purple Artichokes WIP2

Still not quite finished, due to lack of time. Had some wonderful visitors over the week and between that and work deadlines, have managed to progress at the speed of a snail. Should have it done by next week, fingers crossed.

The one on the left is almost all coloured in, and as I'm planning to keep the one on the right somewhat lighter, it shouldn't take too much longer before I can post the final drawing. Am only glad that the real artichokes who modeled for me were eaten with much enjoyment long before this. Cheers.

14. Floating Lemons: A New Look & New Store

25-Floating-Lemons

We're going through huge changes at present. A whole new look, a new store and a new range of products ... Wedding & Party Themes.

The previous (relatively new too) Floating Lemons banner and logo were just a bit too heavy and serious, so I've replaced it with something slightly more cheerful that I feel reflects better the lighter and more whimsical feel of the illustrations. I think this one's a Keeper :)

We've also opened a new Floating Lemons online store at Zazzle : Floating Lemons Events. As I know absolutely nothing about throwing parties, never mind weddings, I've been researching like mad for months and although I'm still very green I think I've learned a bit -- hopefully enough to understand the basics of what is needed for most events, large or small. Any advice, critical or otherwise, is extremely welcome!

I started the ball rolling with one of my old colored pencil drawings as it's a popular one, and cheerful and bright, my Red Poppy:

25-Red-Poppy

The first Theme that's JUST been posted at Zazzle is a Wedding theme based on the above drawing, with a teal colour to match it. I've aqua (love the aqua and red combination), apple green and lime green lined up as well, but started off with the teal, creating wedding stationery (I think I have everything covered, from invitations, 'save the date' announcements, 'will you be my ...' cards, menu cards, to ceremony programs and everything in between) and gifts to match as thank you gifts and party favors all with fully customizable text so that names and details can be changed. phew. If I've missed anything out let me know.

I really needed the extra work ... not. But I'm quite enjoying this trip into something new, and love the design process despite the headaches (from banging it against the wall once again) and loss of hair (tearing it out, yes). As I said, advice and comments are very welcome!

The new store can be found at: Floating Lemons Events @Zazzle.

Have a peek and let me know what you think. Cheers!

17. Lavender Sprig

21LavenderSprig

This was drawn especially for a good friend of mine -- for her adorable baby daughter who is sweetly nicknamed Sprig. For some odd reason it has taken me ages to do, this being the second attempt.

I'll include my first attempt here too ... didn't like it as it turned out too dark. I don't usually give up on a drawing (and I haven't really given up on this one yet!) but I am setting it aside for the moment:

21LavenderSprig2
Life is full at the moment. Summer sun, guests, gardening, household chores and trying to keep up with work in between it all. Not much time leftover for empty spaces. Have to try squeezing in some simple drawings pretty soon though, as I do need the therapy. Cheers.

18. Red Rose sketch

55RedRose

I'm going to have to blame my lack of inspiration, imagination, and drawing skill to the fact that I've had a cold for the last week so my brain is a fuzzy mess. I'm not happy with this one, but it did at least provide much needed therapy.

I now have to figure out what to draw next. Still uninspired ... NOT a good beginning to the new year, but hopefully (and I'm always hopeful) I'll catch up soon enough and will find new delights to capture my attention. Life has been full of distracting puzzles that I can't seem to figure out recently. Perhaps it's just time to let them go and look for new ones to work on. I could always conquer my fears and procrastination and try messing around with paints finally ... :) Cheers!

20. Clementines the 'Christmas Orange', Natascha & Goddess

54ChristmasOranges

Last week we bought a small basketful of Clementines from the weekly village market. They look and smell so bright and cheerful and summery, lift the spirits even on cold winter days, and are absolutely irresistible. I've since discovered that they are also called Christmas Oranges as they're available from mid-November till January. Sweet and seedless they're teeny pop-in-the-mouth treats. Had to draw them of course.

This was done in coloured pencil on a large-scale moleskine sketchbook that I'm now quite in love with. I haven't really finished the drawing and I hate not completing something to my satisfaction once I've started it, but this will just have to stay as is, as I am away for a couple of weeks as of tomorrow and needed to post this in order to wish everyone a lovely Christmas and New Year!

I'll also add my latest customer/friend requested text designs, Natascha and Goddess. Enjoy the holidays! Cheers.

21. A Floating Provencal Sunflower

40FloatingSunflower

I bought a bunch of sunflowers from the markets the other day, they are so wonderfully cheerful. It's also the first time in my life that I've seen fields absolutely full of sunflowers, a sea of bobbing yellows and oranges capturing the joys of the day, I love it.

Am not so crazy about the drawing though, I'm not quite sure why but it seems pale in comparison to the real thing. I haven't captured the vibrancy and am a bit disappointed -- maybe next time ...

22. Flat Nectarines, Alexander & A new art book!

32FlatPeaches

Two oddly shaped nectarines from the lady who has a wonderful organic fruit & vegetable stall every Wednesday and Saturday morning in the nearby village of Lauris. I love imperfectly shaped fruit, so when my mother (who has been an angel looking after me) brought these back I knew I just had to draw them.

It took me three days to draw them! Though that's probably due to the fact that I still tire easily ... and perhaps because, in some places, there are over twenty layers of colour in this drawing. I'm still not completely happy with it but knew that if I didn't finish it off I'd end up destroying it, so I finally stopped.

31Alexanderlime

A special request, for the name Alexander. I'm quite enjoying doing these names. I have another one waiting so I'd better get onto it.

33altaglich5

I'll have to blame my illness and recuperation for the fact that I'd forgotten to mention that this book that I'd ordered before getting so sick was waiting for me when I returned from hospital. I have been going through it with pleasure and pangs of hunger when I come across the too-yummy food drawings. Altaglich Folio: No Five contains beautifully delicate and detailed drawings by the extremely gifted Megan E. Bluhm Foldenauer whose artwork can be found here www.megalo-media.com or at her Flickr site. I've been a fan of hers since I discovered her drawings and am now determined to acquire books No 1 - 4 too! Cheers.

23. Life is a ... Trio of Cherries?

30ThreeCherries
Three Cherries products at zazzle

Well, I obviously tried to tackle far too much last month ... what with so much extra work and the arrival of my shipping, etc, I ended up sacrificing my daily walk with the dogs, stopped eating healthily, stressed out completely -- and as a result my defences went down and I ended up being taken by ambulance for an emergency operation as I was attacked pretty viciously by an extremely happy internal bacterial infection.

Won't mention the gory details but I essentially suffered from quite massive blood poisoning and am now still recovering though I'm finally home from hospital and what a relief that is. Still have to keep my feet up for another couple of weeks but at least I finally found the energy to start drawing again!

So here is my interpretation of Life is A Bowl of Cherries. Not a bowlful perhaps but I am truly appreciating every little bit life has to offer, so a trio seems apt enough :)

I was able to work slowly on a few text designs as well ... primarily requests for names, and here are the ones I've completed so far:

I'd like to thank very much everyone who sent me prayers, good wishes and positive thought. I've been too tired to write emails or respond to messages personally (general anesthesia truly leaves one exhausted) but I shall now slowly go through them all so that I can personally thank you.

Meanwhile, I have a close friend who has also landed up in hospital after an accident so if any of you reading this know Ida Nerina please please send her all those wonderful prayers for a speedy and FULL recovery.

Wishing you good health! Cheers.
