This past few months have been pretty busy, between my workshops, creating new work, and some personal fun (Go Cubs!)... It's been a busy fall!
A few weeks ago I was lucky to participate in my first Artisan and Craft Show. It was so much fun and I got to meet quite a few great local artists...including another mom from my daughter's preschool. I received some wonderful feedback on my work and some lucky folks walked home with some
Jen Keller Art Cards and
Keller Kiddo Designs Prints. I need to give a special shout out to the Coordinators at the Trees and Treasures Craft Show at the
Wesley UMC here in Aurora for running everything so smoothly and even providing childcare for my little one. It was really a fun day and I hope to participate in more shows in the future.
I also have a few fun new pieces in progress right now and I hope to launch them before the holidays. Here's a sneak preview --
 |
Follow JenKellerArt on Instagram to see more previews like these! |
In light of recent events I have also decided that for the next year I will be donating 25% of my profits to
The Sierra Club. For details please look for my most recent e-letter that will be coming out tomorrow morning.
Keep posted for new work and upcoming holiday specials. Thanks for all of your support...

Wow! Summer seemed to just fly by. With my daughter home from school we had a great time playing, traveling, and relaxing. I'm so excited for the fall, however, and all of the new things that are happening...
Labor Day weekend I kicked off a series of Illustration workshops being offered at
The Fox River Academy of Music and Art. We started with a basic Character Design workshop where the students learned how to create a character using basic visual storytelling techniques. Since it was the first workshop I allowed the kids to work in any style they were comfortable with and let them design any character they wanted. We ended up with some tough Manga/Anime girls and a nomadic canine. These kids did great! In future workshops we will focus on many different genres in the Character Design world, as well as doing some Creature Design, Children's Book Illustration, and Decorative/Greeting Card Artwork. Check out this great list of workshops in
The Academy's most recent newsletter. I am also excited to be dipping my toes back into teaching at
The Grace Holistic Center for Education. It is a Waldorf/Earthschooling facility that is collaborating with Fox River Academy to provide their Art and Music Programs. As the weekly art instructor I will be teaching a wide range of ages and abilities within a combined grades system. It will be a challenge but I'm sure I will learn and grow along with the students.
I have also been continuing work on my children's art line of prints. In addition to selling my work on my website I have also opened a new
Keller Kiddo Designs ETSY shop. For my grande opening I'm offering
FREE SHIPPING for the next two months**!! Use the code
FALLBACK to get the discount!
I have also recently finished a new piece within my "Jungle Fun" collection featuring this adorable baby elephant and a little bird friend.
Keep checking back for new work in this line and other news. Enjoy this upcoming season of pumpkin spice and chunky sweaters.... I know I will!

It's been a busy and exciting start to the summer... First of all I'm so happy to announce my local gallery debut! I was thrilled to be able to participate in this month's First Fridays right here in my own backyard. The local gallery, If These Walls Could Talk, contacted me about participating in their June Group Show, The "J" Show, featuring artists with the first letter "J" in their name. They did a beautiful job of hanging my work and displaying my prints for sale. If you missed the big opening you can still come by the gallery and see my work. The show will be up until June 29th. Don't miss it!

Gallery Opening with my Biggest Little Fan! |
I also have a two new pieces in my
Keller Kiddo Designs art print line. My first piece is from the "Playful Pups" Collection featuring a tiny and mighty
Chihuahua and Dragonfly. Initially inspired by a friend who is a Chihuahua lover and just had a baby girl, I feel this piece speaks to all of the little ones out there who feel their size has nothing to do with their ability!
 |
...And though she may be little, she is FIERCE! |
Next is a piece for my new "Jungle Baby" Collection. These are a couple of powerful girls...
The Lioness and Cub. With plenty of male lions out there in the art world, I thought it was high time the Lioness was represented! This was also inspired by a mighty Leo Mama friend of mine and her new little cub. I love this piece and think it could have a life in numerous venues.
 |
GRRRRRRL POWER |
I am also happy to announce that I will be teaching illustration workshops starting this fall at
The Fox River Academy of Music and Art. This is going to be a great opportunity for kids of all ages to learn a different genre of art. I plan on offering workshops in both Children's Book and Decorative Illustration along with some Character Design classes.
I'm so thrilled about all of the avenues, events, and new work. Keep posted for new pieces that will be launched before the end of the summer and other exciting news!

I want to thank everybody out there who has given me so much support for my new children's art line. Things are running smoothly and I can't contain my excitement for this new avenue of work.
One thing that I love about this style is its versatility. It looks great with so many different interior decor themes. To show this I've been creating "Inspiration Room Boards" on
Pinterest. They are a great way of envisioning my work in real life with pieces from a variety of retailers. I would love to invite everyone to
follow this board and get inspired!
I'm also happy to announce a new piece in my Starry Night Line -
"Dog with Shooting Star". I wanted a dog piece to complement
"Kitties in the Stars" and I also loved the idea of a dog with his head in the wind embracing his love of life. What better way to do that than on a shooting star? It's a fun concept that could find a home in any children's rooms. This little guy would make anybody happy.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars. |
This has been quite an adventure for the past month and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I have a sketchbook bursting with ideas and I can't wait to realize them all and share with everyone!

I am so excited to announce that my new line of art prints,
Keller Kiddo Designs, is officially for sale on my website!
Bringing this style to the forefront of my creative body of work is absolutely thrilling. The work is fun, whimsical, and stays true to my own style of illustration.
Every piece starts with a hand drawn image. Then I ink it by hand and finish the artwork digitally by choosing a tight color palate. This gives it a modern flare that would look great in any nursery or children's room. The combination of a hand drawn style with a graphic color scheme make these pieces very versatile, fitting into any type of room design ranging from a soft classic look to a more contemporary feel that you see all over the marketplace today.
I have started with two small collections. My first one is called "Starry Night" and features lovable animals cozying up under the stars and moon. The color scheme is very simple ranging from dark blue, yellow and a variety of neutrals. These pieces work well together or as a stand alone. They are gender neutral and would be great for a boy or girl.
The second collection are "Playful Pups" and feature a series of adorable romping puppy dogs. The colors vary a bit more in this series with pinks, purples, yellows and greens along with some lovely brown neutrals. These look great together or as individual pieces. I may also offer these pieces with custom colors to either match each other, fit into a nursery scheme, or perhaps to mimic your own special pup at home. If you are interested in custom work within this series please inquire!
All pieces are printed on high quality acid-free Strathmore paper and printed with high quality, long lasting photo quality inks. The size of the work is 5 x 7 and for sale in 8 x 10 acid-free mats. They are the perfect size for any store-bought 8x10 frame.
For those of you who are a fan of my more traditional style of work, my
ETSY shop still offers all of my classic stationary items. As a special treat I'm also offering a
50% DISCOUNT on any orders from my stationary collection on
ETSY if you purchase a print from
KELLER KIDDO DESIGNS by
March 31, 2016 (Just in time for Easter!) Also as an extra special bonus the

Well, it's been little over a year since our move to Minnesota, and we have found ourselves on the road again! The journey has come full circle and I find myself back in the Chicagoland area. After growing up in the Southwest Suburbs and living in the Windy City for almost 10 years, I am very excited to move back.
It has taken a little while, but my studio is set up and this time around -- I'm sharing it with my little protege! What better way to get inspired to do children's art by sharing my creative space with my own kiddo's crafty corner.
I am also happy to report I've been busily working on that Nursery/Children's Art line, finding inspiration everywhere. I'm hoping to have a new shop on ETSY featuring my work and perhaps a few other venues - plus a NAME! It seems to be one of the most challenging parts of the process.
One of my favorite pieces I've been able to do is for another new little baby who entered our world this May... Miss Amelia. I had done a commission years ago for little Amelia's daddy of his wonderful Yellow Lab. So for her nursury I wanted to also represent the "dog-love" of her mommy's life - a beautiful Ridgeback named Zeke. It seems both Mama, Daddy, and Baby are happy with their new art!
It's been quite a journey for the past year and a half, but we are all feeling very grounded here. I am excited about this new chapter in the place I grew up and looking forward to watching my little girl grow and prosper in a place I am proud to call home.

Hello friends! For the past few months I've been finding inspiration everywhere... including new babies! I have some special people in my life that have new little ones joining their families and I felt inspired to create artwork for them.
 |
Beautiful Mama Linda with Baby Finn, 3 months old. |
I also decided to use this opportunity to expand my digital artwork. I first used this style while working on cover art for the EXPLORE! series at Nomad Press. I really liked the modern graphic look of these pieces and I felt it would be perfect to start exploring a Children's/Nursery Art Line. Compared to the watercolor style I had been using in the past, this style is a little more commercial and also versatile. Every piece starts with drawing and inking by hand, so it still has my personal touch and doesn't feel so generic. Next I convert the inked piece to a digital line and color the piece with a little more of a flat graphic color style.
My first piece started traditional for my little niece, Sabina Rue. After I finished the original and gave it to my glowing sister-in-law I proceeded to work on the digital version.
After finishing my first one, I couldn't wait to start work on the next two newborns on my list. First a bunny for my good friend's little boy, Finn, in Chicago.
Great friends of ours also had their first baby girl in New York City. I used their own kitties as inspiration for wee Hanna's artwork.
After finishing this work it was time to give my website a little facelift. Check it out at
JenKellerArt.comWell, it's been a busy couple of months and I hope to stay just as busy. How do I get all of this done (you may be wondering) while living in toddlerland? Nap time
has been my best productivity friend these days. I also try to make lists and keep to a schedule. It's quite a balancing act but so far - so good!
The most important part is to get outside, have fun, and get inspired...
because inspiration is everywhere...

Well it looks like the last of winter has left us and we are in for warmer and greener days ahead (fingers crossed!) Though its lucky for me that I got to spend the last few weeks of the Minnesota bitter cold back at my old stomping grounds in the Bay Area. Soaking up sunshine, seeing friends, and cherishing special family time.
For one of my recent projects I was lucky enough to be commissioned for a Save-the-Date and
Invitation combo for a dear friend of the family who was having a 70th Birthday Party during our visit to Northern California. This woman is an inspiration to everyone she meets - a breast cancer survivor and currently kicking more cancer butt and consistently beating the odds. Her philosophy? "I'm too damn busy to die!" I love it.
Now this amazing lady had some very special requests. She wanted three birds to represent herself, her husband and her son on the Save-the-Date. She wanted something simple with a little bit of punch. So we opted for a classic pencil drawing with a bit of digital color to make it pop.
The invitations needed to be special and personal. Our birds were necessary to continue the story, as well as three of the birthday girl's biggest loves - her dog, her horses, and skiing.
I was very happy that she was pleased with the design. I felt that it spoke of who she is so much that I framed it and gave it to her for her birthday. Nobody else should own this original.
Getting to do intimate pieces like this are very special. I love being a part of a monumental event for someone and representing something so personal is very precious. There is no price tag on that.

Wow! I can't believe it's been so long since my last post. Apologies to all of my adoring fans out there (hi mom and dad!) I have been on a bit of a hiatus for the past six months or so. Taking some time out to figure out my next creative step and also that whole "being a mom" thing really takes up a lot of time!
In the meantime, my last two books with Nomad Press have been published! Both
Explore Natural Resources! and
The Roaring Twenties have come out and they look great. It was a whirlwind doing both of these books back to back on top of trying to be a mom, but thank goodness I had family and an amazing babysitter who helped me out as much as they could.
Since then we've gone through a bit of a life change. In August of last year my husband got a job that moved us from Sunny California to Snowy Minnesota! Though it wasn't snowy in August... more Mosquitoey (if that's even a word). It's been quite an adjustment trying to get back into the swing of things.
At first I looked for a studio space outside of my home, but after searching I finally decided that my own backyard was the perfect setting. Our new place doesn't have a separate room I can use for work, but our main area is huge and I can't beat the light or the view!
Not only that, it's nice to have my little protege's work station right next to me. Though at the age of two she doesn't sit very long...for anything! However when she does get into her coloring or stickers she really gets into it.
Follow my twitter feed
@jenkellerart with #artynewmom or #mylittleprotege for details of the toddler genius at work and a few tips on how to achieve the holy grail of being a work from home mom (#wfhm or #wfhmsurvival.)
I'll let you know if I ever figure it out.
So here we are in the land of 10,000 lakes and weather so cold your face might freeze off... but we are making it work. I have a few projects under my belt and a few more I'm just beginning work on. It's exciting to be back in the creative saddle and start sharing with everybody again!

Wow! Again I can't believe so much time has gone by since my last post! I just finished working on my latest book for Nomad Press,
The Roaring Twenties. Just like the decade - it was a whirlwind!
This book was really interesting. The Inquire and Investigate series is for older kids, so the subject matter can be a little more sophisticated in content. Not only does this book cover the surface information about the twenties including music, art and fashion, but it goes into women's issues, race issues, prohibition, etc. It ends with the lead up to the depression and World War Two. I love that the author didn't sugar coat the era, but really covered the good and the bad, as any period of history has.
As far as the work goes, since this book was more of a graphic novel/comic format my work was only done in black and white line. This was a challenge since I could only rely upon the line work and not value patterns for my compositions.
The work - life balance is always a challenge for me these days, especially now that my wee baby is a walking, talking, (sometimes running) toddler! Now at 17 months Emily is pretty much running the show around here. It's an adventure every day....
As always, I need to give a special shout out to all the support I receive from family (especially Gram & Pop pop), friends, and sitters. I especially need to give credit to my extremely supportive husband, who was not only my primary sitter, but my go to model for almost all of the male characters in this book. I couldn't have done any of it without him.
So here's a little preview of The Roaring Twenties.... Enjoy!

Wow! I can't believe it's been so long since my last post! I guess that's what happens when your cuddly baby turns into a walking, babbling, adventurous toddler!

The Three R's |
I am just turning in the last few illustrations for
Explore Natural Resources! This book was a lot of fun. I love illustrating animals and this was a great opportunity to really develop a few characters that I enjoyed. Here are a few samples from the last chapters of the book.

I am also very happy to announce that I have been asked to illustrate another title in a different series with Nomad Press meant for young teens (ages 12-15) called
Inquire and Investigate. This series is done in a graphic novel/comic book style and is about The Roaring Twenties. This is one of my favorite periods dating back to my costume design days and I'm excited to be working on it!
 |
Emmy's One Year Birthday Party |
As far as my life as a WAHM - Work at Home Mom - it has been quite a challenge since my little angel turned ONE! She is now walking and even with a limited vocabulary, she has many opinions. Gone are the days of hanging out in her play yard due to her higher activity level and more intense curiosity, but this is what Grandparents are for! (Special shout out to Gram and Pop pop for all their help these days... and Daddy, too!)
 |
Hold all my calls! I have a very important conference call with Elmo. |
But on the flip side I am enjoying seeing her blossom into a little person...
 |
Enjoying Children's Books as much as Mommy! |
Here we are at 15 months and we may have a mini artist on our hands!
The last few months have literally flown by! It's hard to believe I'm almost halfway finished with this book. Balancing work with baby sure does make every day zip by faster than I had ever imagined!
 |
Chapter 2: Wonderful Water |
 |
Tiddaluk the Frog |
Here are a few samples from Chapter 2 (Wonderful Water) and Chapter 3 (Super Soil). The biggest challenge for me was trying to draw that tarantula in the corner of the Super Soil Chapter Header. I'm pretty proud that I was able to do it, seeing as I have such a bad spider phobia I can barely smash a tiny house spider without having heart palpitations! Enjoy...
 |
Chapter Three: Super Soil |
 |

 |
Cycle of Pollution in the Soil |
In other news, I am only a few weeks away from celebrating my little girl's first birthday!! I can hardly believe it. I am so lucky to have such support from family and friends who help out with my little monkey so I can work. And when it's just the two of us... it's always a good time!
There has yet to be a "jail-break"... I feel it may be just a matter of time!
 |
Explore Natural Resources! Title Page |
This new book is turning out to be a lot of fun. My main character, a little holstein calf, has really blossomed while working on the first few chapters.
 |
Chapter One: Amazing Air |
His friends have also come out of the woodwork and everything is really coming together.
 |
Introduction to Natural Resources |
I do have to put out a special shout-out to Grandma and Grandpa Lovercheck (my husband's parents) for coming through with lots of babysitting time. Emmy also has a new babysitter who has been coming over once a week so mommy can have a few hours of uninterrupted work time. Without this extra help I'm not sure how I would ever make a deadline... or keep my sanity!
So enjoy this little sneak peak of The Introduction and Chapter One of
Explore Natural Resources! There will be much more to follow...!
 |
Life with and without an atmosphere! |
 |
Comparing the amount of Natural Resources used millions of years ago to a more recent time. |
 |
Deforestation |
 |
Learning the importance of recycling! |
 |
Non-renewable vs. renewable resources |
Though I do have help with little Emmy there is plenty of time when it's just us girls in the studio. She loves being in her fancy play yard working on her own "personal project."
Not sure if I'll be able to contain this girl for much longer...
Wish me luck...!
It was certainly a tight squeeze getting the artwork done for the cover this time around with my new little helper, but I did it! (A special thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Keller who happen to be in town and had no issues doing a little babysitting.) I think this is going to be a fun book. It is very different from the Native American Book since it's not as cultural but more scientific. Though "going green" is certainly a part of our current culture today - at least let's hope so!
I'm really starting to enjoy creating this type of digital illustration. I'm hoping to incorporate it into future projects at some point. Enjoy this little sneak peak of the Explore Natural Resources cover artwork!
And for those of you
work from home moms (aka WFHM)
trying to figure it out like I am, I highly recommend the full size play yard! I'm pretty sure Emmy is enjoying it.
Well, see for yourself!
It seems like a only a moment ago I did my latest post, but it's been more like six months! I must apologize for my absence but these babies sure do take up a lot of time. During my hiatus I've been keeping busy in my sketchbook and trying to catch a few art shows, but mostly I've been enjoying being a mom. However my status as
stay at home mom will be changing to
work at home mom now that I am doing another title in the
Explore Your World Series with
Nomad Press about Natural Resources.
I have started work on the cover this past week and when people say everything changes once a baby enters your life - they aren't kidding! Working from home and taking care of my wee one has presented its own set of challenges (which include her being mobile!) I have attempted to adapt the studio in order to accommodate little miss social and so far I think we've come up with a balance.
Not so sure if Emmy agrees.
A full sized play yard is on its way from Amazon - thank goodness! I don't know how much longer I can keep her from teething on her play mat - or anything else she happens to find....
It does feels good to "officially" be back at the drafting table. I also love the fact that I have a little girl at the other end of it. Love the curve balls life throws at you. They make it that much more thrilling. Can't wait to share this new adventure with everyone!

Between the diaper changes and the feedings, the play dates and activities, the lack of sleep, trying to take a shower, and taking care of the dog - I need to carve out a moment to make a little art. This is what I tell myself every day.
During my pregnancy I thought I was going to lead a perfect creative life as a mom. After all, I work from home - isn't that the dream? I would paint at my drafting table and my baby would coo and giggle while I worked. She wouldn't cry, or fuss, and most importantly she
would take a nap - a loooong nap - that would allow my creativity to flow.
However, she
does cry and she
does fuss. She does also coo and giggle, but not as an observer to my "creative genius." Oh yeah, and she does nap - either while I'm driving or in her stroller. Not the best places to paint!
But what I can do is make a promise to myself that when those quiet moments arrive I will unleash my creative daemons upon the world (or in my sketchbook). I have to first thank a good friend and fellow artist who made this outstanding sketchbook for everyone in our critique group. Each page is hand labeled with fun concepts and ideas. I absolutely LOVE it! I keep it handy with pencils at the ready. Sometimes I take a few minutes and just doodle the first thing that pops into my head. It's a great way to keep drawing and challenge my imagination.
Besides my chai latte breaks at Starbucks and carrying my little sketchpad everywhere I go just in case there is a moment I can draw, I also participate in many of
The Art House Coop's free projects. This is great motivation! I especially love the
"In Five Minutes" series in which you are given concept that needs to be sketched
in five minutes. I feel like this was made for new moms!

I also participated in the
Infinite Scroll, "Space" series. This was a lot of fun and I was thrilled they choose my drawing to post on their blog. The great thing about these projects is that they aren't juried and that artists at any level can participate. How great will it be if one day Emmy and I can both submit works together, side by side? Looking forward to that.

While I continue to take time out to enjoy my baby, as long as I have five minutes the juices will keep flowing and I will keep working. Besides, I do have a wee protege to show the ropes to...

I'm so excited to announce that
Explore Native American Cultures! has been published. It's very exciting to see all of my illustrations put together with the text and graphics for this fun and educational book.

Plus a big thumbs up for the publishers at
Nomad Press, especially Abby and Rachel, who worked around my ever growing belly and physical limitations during my pregnancy in order to make this a good experience.
Now on to my next adventure....!
Well I have to apologize for my lack of blog posts the past few months. 2012 turned out to be an amazing year. I started out the year working with
Nomad Press on their exciting new educational book,
Explore Native American Cultures! I believe there were a total of around 100 illustrations. I enjoyed working on this book so much that the time really seemed to fly by. It amazes me how much the kids will learn about Native Cultures from this title and I'm very excited to see it in print.

In addition to this project, I also gave my
ETSY shop a lift and introduced my new greeting card line. I'm very excited about this venue and I've been able to make several sales and I'm hoping the success will continue.

My last, but greatest achievement (and the reason nobody has heard from me since November) is the birth of my first child, Emily Gertrude Lovercheck.
 |
Emily Gertrude Lovercheck Born November 27, 2012 9 pounds 12 ounces 20 inches |
I never knew how much I could love something until she entered my life. I'm thrilled to watch her grow and change. She has stirred my imagination in numerous ways and she's only been in my life for a mere two months!
For all you Mattie fans out there - don't fret! She is still in the picture and going strong. She has also turned out to be an ideal "furry big sister." I can't wait to see my little one play with her and learn to love her. What a pair they'll make! I know that my writing and artwork will blossom with their relationship.
There's a new muse in town and I'm looking forward to all of the inspiration she will bring me.
Happy New Year, indeed.
Well, it has been a long time coming but I finally updated my online portfolio and website! Log on and check out the fresh look, as well as some of my newer illustrations, news about my ETSY shop, and soon to be published Native American Book.

It's been a long couple of months, but I finally finished the last few chapters of the
Native American Book for
Nomad Press. It was a really interesting journey, and I learned quite a bit about Native Americans. I feel these books will be great for kids and open their minds up to numerous different cultures in North America.
 |
Pacific Northwest Totem Pole |
The last two chapters I worked on were about The Pacific Northwest and The Arctic. They were both equally fascinating and very different, but with certain similarities like the sea life they hunted and their coastal lifestyle. The Arctic tribes had more weather issues, however!

I'm happy to share with you a small selection of these final chapters. Working on these books was a great experience in not only process, but in subject matter as well. Enjoy!

I just finished the one of the larger chapters about the Plains Natives in the Native American Book for
Nomad Press. It was really interesting and fun to do.
 |
Winter Count - Type of Native American calender and/or history record |
Being from Illinois, I have a sentimental attachment to this part of country. Growing up, the Plains Native Americans were a part of my own local history. Since then I have learned so much more, but I still have a great deal of affection for this region.
 |
War Bonnet - Number of Feathers represent good deeds done by the wearer. For a warrior it was for deeds in battle, for a chief it was for deeds done in he community. |
So here are a few images from the lengthy and fascinating chapter on the Plains Native Americans. Even with some of my prior knowledge, I still learned more about the details of their culture, games, and lifestyle. Pretty interesting stuff!
 |
Smoke Signals
 | Native American Game: Shinny (a game similar to hockey) |
|
I'm still plugging along on the educational book,
Explore Native Americans! for Nomad Press. I recently finished the 2nd & 3rd Chapters covering Native American Tribes for both the American Southeast, Southwest, and Mesoamerica.
 |
Typical Seminole Housing: Chickee |
 |
Adobe Pueblo Housing of the Southwestern Tribes (Hopi & Zuni) |
Much like the first few chapters, I continue to learn more about Native Americans. Things that are vaguely familiar to me about these regions become much more concrete and certain elements are completely new to me, like the game of
Chunkey played by the Natives of the American Southeast.
 |
Boys from southeastern tribes playing "Chunkey" |
So here is a small sampling of these two chapters covering numerous tribes like Cherokee, Seminole, Hopi, Zuni, Navaho, Mayan, and many, many more...
Looks great Jen! Really great work, solid, beautiful, inspiring!
