so, now the back story for this painting (because isn't there always one.)...
well, i knew i wanted something different...something to represent the new style i seem to have evolved into with the start of 2014. i also knew i didn't want an easel in the image, knowing of course that this would be the new front page of the website.
so...i had to include my stuffed elephant, maggie into the design because she is my partner is creative crime, after all. couple that with the fact that i am an insomniac and do my best work after midnight (don't all of us artists?!) and the fact that i'm obsessed with chris martin and the coldplay song "yellow" ("look at the stars, look how they shine for you....i drew a line, i drew a line for you and all the things you do, and it was all yellow") well, there it is.
a little coldplay, a little insomnia, a little nicole and a little maggie, of course...and so "moonlight mavens" was born. from my head to the sketchbook to the finished painting.
what's that you say, mr. polar bear? you'd like to take me away with you on an ARCTIC adventure? well, yes sir. i would happily oblige you, mr. polar bear...as we seem to have a true love and appreciation for the same type of climate. :)
{it's NO secret...i loathe summer, heat and humidity. not one bone in my little august born body likes this weather...especially once the numbers hit triple digits. add in the words "oppressive" and "heat warning" and yeah, nicole is not a happy camper. so.....
AC is pumped up, Christmas music is on (after all it is Christmas in july) and i'll be dreaming of snowflakes and Christmas lights while painting at the easel. speaking of "Christmas lights"...(sorry, couldn't resist attaching the video below) which leads me to some wishful thinking...perhaps a little Chris Martin under my preverbal Christmas tree. hmmm..;)}

and while i'm on the subject of my beloved Chris Martin, my FAVORITE Coldplay song turned 14 yesterday (gosh, i really feel old right now....). best. song. ever.
{i know, i'm a little obsessed. but....it inspires paintings....like the i'm currently working on. :)}

Coldplay (pictured, via) launched a library-themed scavenger hunt to reveal the lyrics of the nine songs featured on their forthcoming CD, “Ghost Stories.” The seven-time Grammy Award-winning band left sheets containing the lyrics, handwritten by lead vocalist Chris Martin, in libraries all over the world.
Clues have been shared on the official Coldplay twitter account with the hashtag #lyricshunt. Some of the hiding spots include the NYPL’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building in New York City, the Vasconcelos Library in Mexico City, and the Rikhardinkatu Library in Helsinki. Each one was nestled inside the pages of a book. Thus far, fans have uncovered eight out of nine sheets.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (better known as an Oscar-winning actress and the Grammy-winning lead singer of Coldplay respectively) recently announced that they would be separating. While the news of any separation is sad, we can’t deny that the report also carried some linguistic interest. In the announcement, on Paltrow’s lifestyle site Goop, the pair described the end of their marriage as a “conscious uncoupling.” So … what does that mean?
The phrase was picked up by journalists, commentators, and tweeters around the world. Some called it pretentious, some thought it wise, others simply didn’t know what was going on. Let’s have a look into the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and see what we can learn about these words.
Conscious is perhaps the less controversial word of the pair. A look through the Oxford Thesaurus of English brings up adjectives like aware, deliberate, intentional, and considered. But did you know that the earliest recorded use of conscious related only to misdeeds? The OED currently dates the word to 1573, with the definition “having awareness of one’s own wrongdoing, affected by a feeling of guilt.” This sense is now confined to literary contexts, but it was only a few decades before the general sense “having knowledge or awareness; able to perceive or experience something” became common. The idea of it being used as an adjective referring to a deliberate action came later, in 1726, according to the OED’s current research.

The verb uncouple has an intriguing history. The current earliest evidence in the OED dates to the early fourteenth century, where it means “to release (dogs) from being fastened together in couples; to set free for the chase.” Interestingly, this is found earlier than its opposite (“to tie or fasten (dogs) together in pairs”), currently dated to c.1400 in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In c.1386, in the hands of Chaucer and “The Monk’s Tale,” uncouple is given a figurative use:
He maked hym so konnyng and so sowple
That longe tyme it was er tirannye
Or any vice dorste on hym vncowple.
The wider meaning “to unfasten, disconnect, detach” arrives in the early sixteenth century, and that is where things rested for some centuries.
The twentieth century saw another couple of uncouples – one of which is applicable to the Paltrow-Martins, and one of which refers to a very different field. In 1948, a biochemical use is first recorded – which the OED defines “to separate the processes of (phosphorylation) from those of oxidation.” But six years earlier, an American Thesaurus of Slang includes the word as a synonym for “to divorce,” and this forms the earliest example found in the OED sense defined as “to separate at the end of a relationship.” Other instances of uncouple meaning “to split up” can be found in a 1977 Washington Post article and one from the Boston Globe in 1989.
So, despite all the attention given to the term “conscious uncoupling,” people have been uncoupling in exactly the same way as Gwyneth and Chris – and using the same word – since at least 1942. So perhaps not quite as controversial as some commentators suggested.

As I have started my revision I have struggled over this whole outlining thing. The truth is that I have never outlined. It’s not that I don’t know where my book is going - it’s just that I find it impossible to be creative in an outline. I can only think out of the box while I’m writing (or chatting on the phone).
I have great friends, like Shelli, who are incredible outliners and are able to get way creative during that process, but me? 'Fraid not. Those short sentences feel like jail bars. I can’t do it. I just can’t!
BUT, by God’s grace, I picked up On Writing, By Stephen King, this week. This book has been sitting on my bedside table in a big stack of books for over a year. I was hesitant to read it because the truth is that I can not read horror books - or watch horror movies. They scare the crap out of me and I assumed that I wouldn’t be able to relate to his book. But boy was I wrong!
It’s a book about process. It's not scary at all! In fact, it's rather fascinating.
And guess what? He doesn’t outline either, so I’m a new fan.
Therefore Dear Readers, I give you the FREEDOM to be the creative souls that God made you and write however it flows out. Perhaps I am a strange breed of savant, whose creative process defies logic like Chris Martin’s. And perhaps so are you! (His "process" is about 7 minutes in and it's almost exactly like mine - fragmented and random - but the whole interview is great.) I wonder what else lies in wait on my bedside table?

Okay, that book has been sitting in my Amazon queue for years. I'll go and press the "buy it" link.
I outline after my first draft--just so I can get a feel for the big picture and work on the structure. I can't imagine outlining on the front end, either. I like for those characters to tell me where they want to go.
On Writing is my favorite writing book. Ever. I re-read it about once a year. Probably because he cusses and that makes me laugh.
And strangely enough, I received a comment on my blog this morning from someone pretending to be Stephen King. Or at least that's what I think...he signed it "SK." But it was a rant about the evils of social networking and how sad I'll be when I'm 90 and never wrote that book because I was too busy networking. I'm guessing it was an impersonator because I don't think Stephen King cares about my evil social networking enough to lecture me about it so early in the morning. Or maybe not??? Maybe he's MY best friend. Haha.
On Writing is a definite must have for any writer's resource shelf.
My Wednesday post on The Lesser Key was about writing scene goals, a few quick sentences of what you need to happen to propel the plot forward.
It's not as frightening as outlining, and no one says you actually have to do what the scene goal tells you-- just as long as you know you've thought through your options, the scene goal works.
I've tried outlines too, but they never have helped me when it comes to writing fiction. Maybe, I will have to check this book out. I'm not a Horror fan either so I never keep up the books that Stephen King writes.

I used to do outlining, and still do sometimes. The problem is the outline never matches what I end up writing. It's as if I'm editing the outline.
I think everyone has to find their own way to writing.
