1. How do you make your illustrations?

Often I am asked: 'How do you make your illustrations?'

Naturally people want to study a step by step method - to figure out how artwork is created.

Well I use photoshop and a wacom and pens and brushes. But very often I don't even know myself.  I know, that sounds mysterious... but it's true.

One very odd thing about working in a complicated digital method is that it becomes unthinkingly second nature.  Sometimes I can work the most complicated procedures with little conscious effort. I remember one project that required multiple groups of linked layers in folders all set to unusual masking characteristics - and I did it all more with intuition than with planning. I'm sure I could never explain how to anyone... including myself. It is mysterious.

I just push the keys without looking mostly - and when someone needs tech help I have to go back and look at the keys to remember which ones I used.

So it's largely intuitive... which I like.  And usually in Photoshop there are 3 different ways to achieve the same result, so really the medium is quite organic.

It's a little like how when Mozart was asked where the music came from, he would say he didn't know - it just appeared out of thin air. But I think it requires one to imbue the language of keyboarding into your thinking... learning everything about layers, masks, linking and artistry before that's possible. I know many people hate photoshop, which is understandable I guess. But this is the computer age and I find it a helpful skill to acquire.

2. Windows

Windows …

3. Once every blue moon...

Once every blue moon I like to do an 'art piece' like this. I just can't help it - so it's easier to give in than resist. This was inspired by a scene from a BBC - PBS production - it's dark and somber instead of my usual cartoony dish of happy nursery fodder. I guess the fun part of making 'art' is one can just let go and be messy. This was all done with the wacom in photoshop.

4. Day 4 of the great window project

Day 4 of the great window project is well along. By now I'm getting used to loud crashing noises, pounding, pounding, pounding and playing musical chairs with things like food, coffee and furniture. Even the cat is kind of getting used the upheaval - only level 3 skittishness at this point. Shelter cats are tough.

But it is nice to finally see some spiffy new windows going up where there just used to be plain sheet glass. They don't work on Fridays... so it'll just be Monday and Tuesday and then it's over! (except they have to bring back the wrong windows they put in to swap out correct windows).

6. Self-portrait

They say the eyes are the windows of the soul. I went to the opticians today and came back with these pictures of mine:

The yellow dots in the middle are my optic nerves. You can see the dominant colour is green (a little like Johnny Mackintosh), but I have darker, brown areas while Johnny has silver flecks. I love the detail, that these look like the landscapes of strange alien worlds. The strange black lines on the right eye, like death spikes of an Andromedan Star Destroyer, are my overlong eyelashes.

8. Oxford’s Word Window: Week One

If you have ever walked by the Manhattan office of Oxford University Press on Madison, between 34th and 35th street, you may have noticed two big windows. Periodically we change these displays to reflect current holidays or books we are particularly proud of.  Starting today and continuing for the next twelve weeks this window will display an Oxford Word of the Week, culled from The Oxford English Dictionary.  So check the blog on Mondays to discover what the “word of the week” is and then walk by the window (if you are in NYC) to read its definition. You can also visit the Oxford English Dictionary online for a definition and full history of the word’s origin.

The first word of the week is: Quiddity

10. Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn

Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn

Coordinates: 40 41 N 73 59 W

Approximate length of tunnel: 2,000 feet (610 meters)

Examples abound of cities built on top of cities and newspapers frequently report on accidental discoveries made by construction crews digging new foundations around the world. And while they may be more common in Europe where dense populations have concentrated for many centuries, other instances exist. Nearly 30 years ago, a young engineering student discovered a forgotten train tunnel that once ran from Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood to the East River waterfront, connecting with a busy ferry link to Manhattan.
