1. BOOK REVIEW: Nate Rocks The World by Karen Pokras Toz

Nate Rocks The World is a Children's Action/Adventure for ages 9 -12.

Nathan Rockledge is your typical ten year old boy.  He feels his hair is too red, his freckles too many and his size too scrawny, however, put a pad of paper and a pencil in his hands and Nate could rule the world.

Nathan's older sister, Abby, is bossy and drives Nate crazy, his dad is always going on about when he was a boy and Nate's mom cannot cook anything that doesn't taste like cardboard and the thing is, his mom has no clue to her lack of culinary experience.

Things in Nate's real life don't always go as planned, like how he has to do his science fair project with a girl but not just ANY girl, but Lisa Crane, the only girl he did not wish to be matched up with!!  Nor does he get along very well with Abby and when they each get a package for Christmas that tells them they are about to embark on a trip, his sister whines and moans about not having anything to wear while Nate is thinking about all the exciting and endless possibilities this trip could incur.

Whenever Nate needs a break from his reality, he picks up his trusty pencil and creates the situation in a positive way in which it usually works in Nate's favour, unlike his real life situations.

I found this to be a highly imaginative and creative story and enjoyed reading it.  I thought the imagination of Nate and how he related to the world around him was hilarious and entertaining.  I think this would make an excellent movie for children to view as I would love to see his imaginations come to life.

I enjoyed reading about each of the characters and how they interacted with Nate.  I loved the outcomes of most of his situations and how he accepted each curve ball thrown at him.  You will read how he hits a home run in the greatest baseball game in history to his travels in space, there is nothing found within the pages that will not impress your children to continue reading.

I would give Nate Rocks The World a five out of five stars for its imaginative creativity and how one could almost imagine it on the big screen, right down to which children could play the roles involved.  Author Karen Pokras Toz has written a great book that is guaranteed to keep your young reader enthralled right to the very end.

SYNOPSIS:
Ten-year-old Nathan Rockledge cannot catch a break. After all, life as a fourth-grader can be hazardous what with science projects to deal with and recess football games to avoid. Everyone, including his best friend Tommy, seems to have bad luck when hanging around Nathan. Throw in an older sister who is a royal pain, a dad who is stuck in the past, and a mom who keeps trying to poison him with her awful cooking, and poor Nathan’s life as a fourth grader appears to be completely doomed. Armed only with his sketchpad, his imagination, and his wits, Nathan Rockledge navigates the perils of the fourth grade in style, to emerge heroic, as Nate Rocks, proving that even a ten-year-old can accomplish great things. Follow the quirky and imaginative adventures of ten-year-old Nathan Rockledge as his cartoons come to life.

2. BOOK REVIEW: Sea Turtle Summer by Nancy Stewart

Sea Turtle Summer is a Children's Picture Reader.

Once again Bella and Britt return to the beach to save the day.

It is turtle breeding season and the two girls have decided to visit the beach and while they are there, they find a Loggerhead turtle laying her eggs.  They watch her until she is finished and decide to tell the Ranger about the area so she can mark it off so that the beach sweeper doesn't disturb the nest.

However, the Ranger has left for the day and the girls are frantic as to a solution.  Deciding to meet the next morning in order to stop the sand sweeper from hurting the turtle eggs, the girls learn that the cleaner is the least of their worries, as a Volleyball tournament has been scheduled for that exact spot.  Whatever will the two girls do?

I love this series and think the two young ladies are to be commended on their dedication to saving the marine wildlife.  As you will recall, the two girls were featured in One Pelican At A Time (read my review here.)  In this book they are saving the turtles who are on the endangered species list.

I enjoyed reading their problem and their solution and how they kept a clear head and remembered their rights and those of the turtles.  I love the facts that the book has listed at the end, giving the reader turtle knowledge that one may not realize.

I thought the illustrations by Samantha Bell were very nice and they are done in a pencil crayon type medium.  The colours blend very nicely on the page and children are accepting of the girls features and the background surroundings.

I would give Sea Turtle Summer a five out of five for its message and for its action.  I think its an excellent series in which to teach children about the plight of the marine life and would recommend it for any library.

SYNOPSIS:
Bella and Britt think living by the beach is the coolest thing ever. When they discover an unprotected sea turtle's nest, they go into action! Will their bravery and quick thinking save the baby turtles? How can do they do it, and what lesson will they learn about themselves? The book also contains kid appealing sea turtle facts. Suggested for readers:6-9

3. My Child Is Sick by Barton D. Schmitt, MD, FAAP

My child Is Sick!:  Expert Advice for Managing Common Illnesses and Injuries is an encyclopedia of information pertaining to childhood common ailments.

This book is dedicated to the health of all children and is published by the American Academy of Pediatrics Association.  This book will help you realize when to call your doctor and when it's safe to treat your children at home.

You, as a parent, want to ensure that you are doing the best for your children, however, it can get very expensive to take your child to the doctor's for every ailment.  This book is geared to help you decide when you should visit your doctor and help ease your worries both financially and emotionally.

This book is based on the guidelines developed by Dr. Barton D. Schmitt and is used by over 10,000 pediatricians and nurses and over 400 nurse advice call centers in the United States and Canada.  These guidelines have been tested for 15 years on more than 150 million phone calls.

Inside of these pages you will find useful information pertaining to many illnesses and injuries.  There are decision charts which are used to help determine when to call a doctor or to treat at home and it will describe everything you need to keep your concerns at a minimum by walking you through each stage of symptoms.

There is in-depth advice for treating symptoms at home, home remedies for treatments, charts for medicine distribution, dos and don'ts on what you can and cannot do, prevention recommendations and so much more!

There are chapters on head injuries; eye, ear, nose, throat ailments as well as chapters on fever, bites or stings, abdomen injuries, and so much more.  Each has a definition, cause, home care advice and when to call you doctor laid out in an easy-to-read approach that will not leave you guessing on your interaction with your child.

Dr. Schmitt is a board-certified pediatrician and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  He is an author and created the first self-triage, self-care iPhone app for parents, KidsDoc.  He is the recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics' C. Anderson Aldrich Award for contributions in child development and the Education Award for contributions in pediatric condition.

This is an EXCELLENT reference guide that I would recommend that all parents keep a copy around.  I have used this book several times in the past few weeks and have been thankful to have had it.  I'm not a panic-mongering parent who rushes my child to the doctor's/hospital and usually do everything by instinct or common sense.  It has been great to realize that I often do the correct things in certain situations.

My youngest son is always coughing and croupy.  This book reinforced my own medical know-how AND taught me a few things, like, I didn't know it was beneficial to have your child drink warm water or apple juice to help open up their airways!!  As well, I forget that honey is better for your child than store bought medicines and now keep a jar in the house JUST for his croup.

I found many useful tips to keep my sanity when it comes to my kids.  I have four of them still at home and a 6 year old granddaughter, so for me, this has become my new bible!  I keep this close at hand and will use it over and over again!!

I could see this as a great benefit to keep in schools and day cares!!  Truthfully, this book has it all and it will reassure you that your doing everything correctly!!

4. Nightmare Academy Monster Madness by Dean Lorey

Nightmare Academy #2: Monster Madness (Monster Academy) - by Dean Lorey

I liked this book quite a bit more than the first one. With the first book I was worried that parts of the book weren't very original and I didn't know how the author would develop the story. This book was totally original and really distinguished this story from other books. The story was fast paced, exciting, and I couldn't put it down. Like the first, there was a very occasional swear word and there was also some fighting, but it was mostly appropriate for all ages. In this book, Charlie Benjamin and his friends are once again fighting the powerful demons called the Named. The goal of the Named is to unite on earth and summon the most powerful demon of all and plunge the earth into a perpetual nightmare. Charlie will have to join with others if he is to succeed and stop the Named from achieving their goal.

7. Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn

Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn

Coordinates: 40 41 N 73 59 W

Approximate length of tunnel: 2,000 feet (610 meters)

Examples abound of cities built on top of cities and newspapers frequently report on accidental discoveries made by construction crews digging new foundations around the world. And while they may be more common in Europe where dense populations have concentrated for many centuries, other instances exist. Nearly 30 years ago, a young engineering student discovered a forgotten train tunnel that once ran from Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood to the East River waterfront, connecting with a busy ferry link to Manhattan.
