Speaking of Preacher, this headline hardly constitutes a shocking surprise, but checking Amazon’s graphic novel best sellers list , Preacher Volume #1 is now the #2 seller (and #124 book overall) just behind the Kindle edition of The Hedge Knight, a Song of Fire and Ice spinoff based on a George R. R. Martin novel. […]

In the wake of The Walking Dead‘s on-going (and growing) success, AMC is gearing up for what it hopes is its next big comic book success. Here’s hoping they find it in Preacher, their adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s critically acclaimed DC/Vertigo series. The series pilot is set to debut on Sunday, May […]

A collaboration with rockstar and comics writer extraordinare Gerard Way on Killjoys guaranteed that I’d read something written by Shaun Simon, but the stellar quality of his work is what keeps bringing me back. Neverboy, illustrated by Tyler Jenkins and published by Dark Horse, really wowed me. Simon’s follow-up to that is Art Ops, a […]

It seems the new run of X-Files has been a hit. (It seems wrong to call it a relaunch or a reboot since it's the same show with the same cast and credits, just after a 14 year absence.) Last night's second episode paved the way for a strong debut for Lucifer, the new show based on the Vertigo comic. (Haven't watched it yet but it's on my hard drive.) X-Files is airing in Gotham's spot for the next few weeks, and did better than that show:

Earlier this week, I took an in depth look at the claims The Wake illustrator Sean Murphy made in an interview with David Harper of SKTCHD. Currently, Vertigo only has seven ongoing titles including the rapidly concluding Sandman: Overture. No new titles have been announced in a year, and although their CMYK and Strange Sports anthologies have shown promise, it seemed as though Vertigo’s star was diminishing.
And then, tonight, as though in response to such claims, Vertigo has gone supernova, announcing the launch of twelve new #1s coming this fall. This unprecedented move features new work from prolific creators such as Darwyn Cooke, Mike Allred, and Gail Simone; it also features work from some relative newcomers to comics like Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, South African novelist Lauren Beukes, and Bodies writer Si Spencer. Notably, writer Holly Black and artist Lee Garbett will be launching a Lucifer comics series to coincide with the new NBC TV show.
Beginning in October, one new #1 will be released each week, forming the basis for a newly revived Vertigo line. Executive Editor Shelly Bond said that the titles “represent the imprint at its core: smart and irreverent stories that will take you someplace stranger. I can’t be more excited about the diversity of projects and creative teams we have lined up, from Vertigo veterans to a powerhouse of new voices and rising art stars.”
The fall lineup will also include American Vampire, Astro City, and Suiciders. Curiously absent from this list is Simon Oliver’s and Robbi Roderiguez’s FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics and Caitlin Kittredge’s and Inaki Miranda’s Coffin Hill. Roderiguez is hard at work on Spider-Gwen while Kittredge recently announced a new Image series called Throwaways. Are these books on indefinite hiatus? Cancelled? Time will tell.
All in all though, I think Vertigo’s looked better than it has in a very long time. Perhaps an old dog can learn new tricks.
Check out a bevy of preview images below.

The USA Network held its “upfronts” at which pilots are announced, and the big news was Smackdown is coming HOME to the USA Network as the WWE rolls out a more millennial friendly and aspirational “For the Hero in All of Us” program. But also, a show based on an unannounced upcoming Vertigo series is in development:
AMPED When a neurotic family man buys an online “smart pill” to increase his focus and jolt him out of his slump, he gets much more than he bargained for. To his surprise, the pill gives him incredible strength and power. The project examines both the mighty highs and humiliating lows of being a real-life super hero. AMPED is based on the characters created for an upcoming comic book by Eric Kripke (“Supernatural,” “Revolution”) for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. Kripke will serve as executive producer/writer of AMPED, from Kripke Enterprises in association with Warner Horizon Television.
Kripke is indeed the creator of the hugely successful Supernatural and Revolution, and to all you Vertigo naysayers, this is a comfort zone for the imprint: developing network ready fare that doesn’t involve the DCU. I Zombie is doing well on the CW, so anything is possible.
Lots of other shows announced, including the return of Tough Enough (probably not with my beloved Al Snow) and a show starring Sawyer from Lost and Lori from Walking Dead for the ultimate crossover.
Also promoted at the press event were “Colony,” a futuristic drama starring Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies as the head of a family of resisters in alien-occupied Los Angeles; and “Complications,” starring Jason O’Mara as a doctor drawn into a deadly gangland saga when he saves a kid from a random shooting.
Oh and here’s a great quote about the rebranded WWE:
Peter Lazarus, USA’s ad sales chief, said they’re now focused “educating the marketplace about WWE’s positive attributes.” Those include the fact that it is mostly DVR proof through its live weekly airings and continuing storylines, and the fact that it draws a healthy amount of family viewing. The push to polish up the WWE reflects the wide-ranging new deal that NBCU and the wrestling giant struck last year, one that gives NBCU more control over advertising sales for the programs.
I didn’t have a photo from the still unannounced AMPED so I put up a photo of current WWE champ Seth Rollins. I don’t follow wrestling any more so I have no idea who this jabroni is, but one look tells you that his matinee-ready millennial look is totally on fleek.
A LOT of the shows in development have futuristic-y SF-y elements, or in other words “USA Network fare.” Why they even need to try this when Fox had to take Almost Human off the air is beyond me.

The Preacher pilot is HAPPENING. I never believed this day would come. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s scabrous, epic take on religion, armageddon and personal honor is still violent and shocking. But it’s happening.
They’ve cast Tulip (Ruth Negga)
And Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun)
And Arseface (Ian Colletti)
But who will play Jesse Custer? The main man, the fallen preacher whose power allow him to take on God himself?
Maybe it should be Matt Ryan, who plays the almost sure to not return Constantine.
After all, Constantine and Jesse Custer look a lot alike.
Actually, the front runner is said to be Dominic Cooper, who also has a strong resemblance to Howard Stark. This is all getting very confusing.

Not many people can mix comics, sushi, and blood. Food personality and comic book author Anthony Bourdain is teaming up with Get Jiro’s Joel Rose for a prequel to the popular graphic novel. The series is returning with Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi and a new set of artists with Dave Johnson (Abe Sapien) on covers and Ale Garza (Teen Titans) drawing the interiors from the book. Comic Vine ran a press release from the publisher Vertigo Comics that included a quote from Bourdain himself;
“Where did my ultra-violent sushi chef hero from the previous book come from? What if you were brought up in a family where murder is acceptable practice and making the best sushi on the planet is a shameful secret? I wanted to take the story back to its beginnings–in Japan (albeit a slightly-in-the-future, dystopic Japan), and indulge my own enthusiasms for both the place and the many classic genre films that have been made there. This is fun for me.”
This is an origin story for Get Jiro’s protagonist, where our lead has to cook in secret in a strange alternate version of Japan. This is a departure from the events of the first series set in Los Angeles, where we will discover the origins of the character in Tokyo. The cover for the book introduces a pretty arresting image perfectly mixing the comic’s violent sushi indulgences. While the comic itself may not be edible, fans get a taste of the delicious graphic novel on October 20. The story cooks up an 160-page meal priced at $22.99 for a full entree.

I fail to understand the enthousiasm for this show, besides the title and the name of the characters it has nothing to do with the comic-book. Average tv at best.
The comic book was the comic book. The show is the show and it’s a pretty great one so far.
ive watched the show and as a fan of the book i have to say its been pretty bland. i see what they are trying to do in order to build up to jessie’s great commission if you will but its so slow i don’t see how average viewers will want to invest the time into watching it.
jessie’s forcing people to love god and take his advise is so out of character for what he would do i really dont recognize the guy.
