17. A sneak preview of Supergirl wows 400 Moms and their daughters

Supergirl colors

In a pretty nice piece of marketing, CBS is aiming squarely at the young women demographic for the upcoming Supergirl, and to highlight that they invited 400 mother and daughters to view a sneak preview of the first episode.

In doing so, they also got a nice surprise, which you’ll see in the short video below…

Given the tendency of superheroics in mass media to aim for the testosterone, it’s nice to see a network to cater to a wholly different demographic for this series. It should give us a whole new reason to root for its success. Everybody needs heroes to look to up to after all.

Supergirl premieres Monday, October 26th (8:30-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on CBS.

18. SDCC ’15: Tom Cavanagh tells us about Eobard Thawne’s favorite snack food

Tom Cavanagh interview

For those who don’t know, Tom Cavanagh (who plays Eobard Thawne/The Reverse Flash on CW’s The Flash) has a podcast with comedian Michael Ian Black called “Mike and Tom Eat Snacks”, of which the premise is that both actors eat, rate and review a different snack food each episode.

During San Diego Comic Con, in the same press room where I pestered Grant Gustin regarding Jay Garrick and a possible Flash musical episode, I decided to beat my fellow reporters to the punch and open the volley of questions for Cavanagh with a query regarding just what sort of snack food a time traveler from our distant future might find appealing. His answer was enthusiastic to say the least:

I love the fact that you are just bridging The Flash with my podcast, “Mike and Tom Eat Snacks”! My god, I love you! All I want to do is talk about that thing, and you just led me into it…my gosh! You know, it’s a really good question, Eobard Thawne’s favorite snack would involve some kind of cow-based, meat product because cows don’t exist where he’s from. They’re out of cows. They’re out of cows! So maybe some beef jerky? I like the fact that in my head that while everyone here is waiting to talk about The Flash, I’m wondering: ‘would it be beef jerky?’.

But listen to this podcast, you won’t be disappointed! “Mike and Tom Eat Snacks” with Micheal Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh! It’s very funny and it’s very blue! It’s not what you’re used to seeing, agreed?

I, of course, answered in the affirmative!

While the rest of his time with us, he couldn’t answer much, having to, as he said himself: “dodge and weave and bob and duck questions like crazy”, other than revealing that he will be a part of the cast in the second season.

In an attempt to get around that, the question was posed about how the second season provides an opportunity to reinvent his character:

My starting point has always been, and will always be, Reverse Flash. That is the starting gate to the track I’m running. I thought they did a really great job with that last year. We ended with a well earned season finale…sometimes with a season finale (showrunners) go “well we have to have this big thing” and you work hard and formulate it, but it’s not organic. I feel like with Rick Cosnett sacrificing himself with the death of Eddie Thawne, coming a little out of left field, I feel like we actually earned that big moment. The job now is to try and vault the high-bar that Rick and the season finale set for the second season.

What’s nice about it is…our writing has been unafraid of the challenge from the beginning, to the point where (Executive Producer) Greg Berlanti last year…this is my third show with Greg…we came out of the gate so fast last year around Episode 7. I said ‘are we at all worried about story?’ because we were coming out with Captain Cold and Plastique and here comes Grodd and you’re unveiled in Episode 9 as the “Man in the Yellow Suit”. Verbatim, Greg’s answer was: ‘there’s always more story’. They’re unafraid, which I like, they’re fearless. They’re not trying to repeat a pilot that worked. And so, in Season 2, we’re not trying to repeat Season 1. We’ve got twists and turns and we’re going to open in a much darker place picking up where we left off last year. I’ve read the first few episodes and it’s accelerated, and it’s not going to be “let’s try and follow a model that worked in Season 1″. I think if you’re a fan of the show what we have in store will keep you a fan.

In other words, Cavanagh has to keep pretty mum about what’s coming for his character, though he did let us know that he will be continuing some of the dual affable/”success at all costs” nature of his character.

Anyone have any guesses as to how Thawne returns next year? Hit me with them!

19. SDCC ’15: Will Jay Garrick become Barry’s new mentor on The Flash? We ask Grant Gustin

IMG_0015

Today I sat in the press room for The Flash, which included stars Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh (who will be returning next season), Candace Patton, Carlos Valdes, Jesse L. Martin, John Wesley Shipp and show producer Andrew Kreisberg. Typically, it’s a bit challenging to get too many details out of the cast and crew for any television series in this kind of environment. But just ahead of their big panel tonight in Hall H, I was able to squeeze a few hints from Gustin about what can be expected in the highly anticipated second season of the series.

The first question that came up related to where Barry finds himself given the cliffhanger we were left with at the end of Season 1:

When we’re coming back, we’re going to see how the singularity affected everybody and kind of piece together exactly what happened. It’s not a completely direct pick-up and the Flash is getting a lot of acclaim from the city for being a hero at this point. And Barry is having a hard time dealing with that, just because, as we all know, Eddie stopped Wells. He was the hero that day and Barry knows that and is kind of having a hard time dealing with the attention. He’s kind of shunned everyone he works with because he doesn’t want anyone else to have to die. He’s kind of going about things a different way when we find him at the beginning of Season 2.

In a follow-up, Gustin addressed this topic further:

I think the biggest thing, as Season 1 was winding down, he was getting a lot of confidence. He knew what he was doing, he had that team behind him, and they all felt like they could take down these metahumans and do something good. But that’s all kind of been turned on its head for season 2. Barry’s going to be spending a lot of time this season maturing, trying to find confidence again, he’s working with a new mentor that’s going to help him hone some new powers pretty early on. He discovers a new power in the second episode that I’m pretty excited about.

This mentor detail made my ears perk up, so I pressed further and asked if that may tie into Geoff Johns‘ revelation about Jay Garrick appearing on the series:

Could be.

And finally on that same topic, Gustin danced around it a bit when asked what he’s excited for fans to see next season:

I don’t know too much about what else is to come. I know some vague things, other than the first two episodes that I read. Things that have kind of been vaguely mentioned with mentors and iconic characters and what not (looks directly at me) that were teased in the season finale even. I think that’s the biggest thing I’m excited about that I think fans will be excited about as well.

Many in the Press Corps at SDCC also noticed that the Flash costume that’s on display on the show floor (at DC’s Booth) has a white emblem instead of the red emblem that we’ve seen so far. We had to find out more:

That’s a thing, yeah, I shot in the suit on my first or second day of filming in the red emblem. But, yeah, I will be in that suit pretty soon.

And what about future cross-overs with Arrow and the upcoming spin-off DC’s Legends of Tomorrow?:

There’s some crossovers already planned….throughout the year and probably at the end of the year. I think it’s going to start to become kind of a staple, I think it was Episode 8 that The Flash and Arrow crossed-over, I think that’s going to be the time every year, provided we still have tv shows.

And finally, in terms of fun questions, I hearkened to the idea that perhaps The Flash should produce a musical episode, given the singing chops of so many of its castmates and if he’s pursued that idea with the producers:

No (laughing), I have not. Although I am pushing fun in general on the show, and maybe even the karaoke bar we went to becoming a frequent place we can go, bring Cisco, and just have it be a set to hang out on and squeeze in karaoke moments here and there. I think a musical episode is like a season 10 kind of thing, if we make it.

Very exciting details all around, particularly the idea that perhaps Jay Garrick might be introduced as early as one of the first 2 episodes. Based on something I heard from Andrew Kreisberg, it’s probably the second episode, as he stated there would be a huge fight scene in that episode that fans have waited for. “Flash of Two Worlds” anyone?

The second season of The Flash premieres on October 6th.

20. Daniel Cerone confirms that Constantine is 100% officially and totally kaput

constantine-22

After NBC failed to pick up its DC Comics adaptation Constantine for a second season, fans (dubbed “Hellblazers” by the cast and crew) were rallying in support of another network potentially bringing the show back to life elsewhere. The CW was considered the biggest wish-list target after rumors of a SyFy channel pickup were debunked.

Today, showrunner Daniel Cerone put all those hopes to rest, as he posted the following statement on his twitter account:

I promised I’d share news when I had it — sadly, that news is not good. The cast and writers of Constantine are being released from their contracts. The studio tried to find a new home for the show, for which we’re forever grateful, but those efforts didn’t pan out. I’m sorry, I wasn’t provided any information on the attempts to sell the show elsewhere. All I can report is that the show is over.

Many ingredients went into this TV series. From the dedicated cast that breathed these characters to life, led by Matt Ryan as the comic-made-flesh embodiment of John Constantine, to the exceptionality talented crew that put unreal images on screen, to the original Hellblazer writers and artists who gifted us a universe.

As a general principle, writers don’t choose a writing career to achieve stardom. Whatever demons or insecurities drove them to find freedom of expression through written words generally keeps writers comfortably obscure behind their words. Nor do people choose writing as a means to financial freedom. I’d venture to guess that most who set out to write professionally never receive a paycheck for their hopeful scribbles or key strokes.

In fact, nobody I know ever chose a writing career — it chose them. You write because that’s what you do. Like breathing, it just happens and you have to do it and you just hope that someday somebody out there notices what you’re trying to say.

If that’s the dream of writers, than the writers of Constantine lived the dream, because we’re leaving behind wild and passionate fans who believe in and were moved by what we tried to do. To leave such a significant, dedicated and active fan base on the table — that’s the real sadness. You all deserve many years of the series we set out to make, and we’re disappointed that we couldn’t deliver that to you. The good news is that Constantine will live on for years in many more forms. But our time as caretakers has ended.

If nothing else, I thought Matt Ryan was a pretty great John Constantine. Season 2 was reportedly going to have more delving into the mystic corners of the DC Universe as well, so if the Justice League Dark movie never takes off, it may be a while before we get another shot at seeing characters like Doctor Fate and The Spectre on screen.

21. Here’s a brief teaser for The Flash Season 2 and let’s chat about that finale

FLASH_SEASON0_5

I haven’t had a chance to watch the finale of The Flash yet (business travel is the worst sometimes), but I hear it was pretty fun! The CW has already released a very, VERY brief teaser for the next season with showrunners Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti about what fans can look forward to this fall when the series returns:

There’s really not much to see here as of yet, but let’s take the opportunity to chat about last night’s finale, what’d you think? Did The Flash‘s inaugural season live up to your expectations?

We’ll consider any that comments below are free to be rife with spoilers, so anyone who’s in my boat and hasn’t watched it yet, steer clear!

22. CBS has released the first trailer for Supergirl

Supergirl colors

Supergirl, the new CBS drama that will debut this Fall in the same timeslot as Gotham (8 pm on Mondays), got its first trailer at CBS’ Upfronts presentation today as well as a new synopsis:

Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats.

While Gotham isn’t quite a ratings juggernaut for FOX, it does very well in its timeslot, so I’ll be curious to see if this splits the audience at all. Either way, this is a whole new kind of Batman vs Superman showdown.

23. The first trailer for Lucifer gives a peek into the new Vertigo adaptation

Lucifer promo

Still smarting over the cancellation of Constantine by NBC? Wondering what may be next for Vertigo television adaptations?

Here’s your chance to find out, as FOX has revealed the first trailer for their adaptation of Mike Carey‘s Lucifer as a part of their Upfronts presentation:

It is definitely a far cry from the Sandman spin-off that I loved so dearly, but perhaps this sort of wider audience appeal will register with more viewers. The critically panned, but very popular Gotham has been a huge hit for FOX, and scores the biggest ratings of any comics-based series outside of The Walking Dead. The network has some confidence in their ability to turn DC properties into hits, so we’ll see if it holds up.

Here’s the synopsis:

The Devil has come to Los Angeles…

Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, LUCIFER is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR (Tom Ellis, “Merlin”) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub.

Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him – as well as his best friend and confidante, MAZIKEEN aka MAZE (Lesley-Ann Brandt, “The Librarians”), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman.

The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective CHLOE DANCER (Lauren German, “Chicago Fire”), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it. As they work together to solve the pop star’s murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Accustomed to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, Lucifer is intrigued by Chloe’s apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet.

At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel AMENADIEL (DB Woodside, “Suits,” “24”), has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld…can the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil?

Lucifer will premiere in 2016.

24. The Arrow/Flash Spin-off finds a Hawkgirl

ciara-renee

The still yet to be titled spin-off of The Flash and Arrow that will presumably air sometime next year on The CW continues to add to its cast, this time establishing a new character as Broadway star Ciara Renée will take on the role of Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl.

Here’s how Deadline, who broke the news, describes this version of the character:

In the new series, Saunders is a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker Hawkgirl.

The superhero team-up show, produced by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Marc Guggenheim has already brought on Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller, and Dominic Purcell to play their various members of the DC Universe for the series, and it’s expected that more are to join soon, including three characters that have yet to appear on television (which Deadline surmises that Hawkgirl is not one of those reported three).

Hawkgirl hasn’t gotten a lot of attention in the live action side of things, having only briefly appeared on Smallville, but the character was a standout in the DC Animated Universe having been wonderfully played by Maria Canals-Barrera in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Bringing on another female superhero, including one that is a person of color, is a terrific move and my excitement for this new series continues to grow.

25. Entertainment Round-Up: Preacher find its first cast member, Another Suicide Squad rumor, Your Dredd 2 hopes continue to be dashed

ruth-negga

We’re in the homestretch for the weekend, and after a pretty eventful day in the comics world, let’s take a look at a few headlines being discussed on the Entertainment side of things:

– AMC’s Preacher has acquired its first cast member and it is someone not wholly unfamiliar to the comic book world. Ruth Negga, who plays Raina on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has joined the new series as Tulip. For those unfamiliar with Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon‘s much loved Vertigo series, Tulip is one of two compatriots of Jesse Custer, a man who merges with an escaped creature from heaven and goes on a quest to find God.

Here’s how Tulip is described by Deadline:

a volatile, action-packed, sexified force of nature, a capable, unrepentant criminal with a love of fashion and ability to construct helicopter-downing bazookas out of coffee cans and corn shine who’s not afraid to steal, kill or corn cob-stab her way out of a bad situation.

The pilot for Preacher is written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and the series will be showrun by Sam Catlin (a writer for Breaking Bad). The indication with Negga’s casting means she will likely be written out of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is a shame given she’s one of the few highlights of that series.

– Another day, another interesting Latino Review rumor; this time they report that Watchmen actor Jackie Earle Haley‘s name is being tossed around Suicide Squad for the role of The Thinker. While they say to take this one with a grain of salt, more interesting to me is the fact that The Thinker is in the film. Based on comics history, the character will likely be one of the film’s antagonists.

– Were you keeping your fingers crossed for a possible Dredd sequel? Well, you can loosen those digits up a bit, as Alex Garland, the screenwriter for Dredd, has stated that it’s pretty unlikely to happen in an interview with Collider:

GARLAND: And I also feel a sense of responsibility because I know there are these people who do this stuff like they’ve got money and they spend money on a DVD to try and up the chance of a sequel getting made. Because I don’t have an online profile or persona or anything like that I can’t speak to these people directly, but what I want to say is that’s so good of you, and thank you, but keep your money because the people who make the decisions don’t get moved by that kind of thing. They’re moved by other stuff, other equations, other algorithms…How can I say this without being soppy? It’s touching. It means something that these people support the film in that way, but the thing people want, which is a sequel, I don’t think is going to happen. I think it will happen (let me rephrase that) I don’t think it’s happening with me and the people who made the last one.

It’s worth noting that Garland’s directorial debut, Ex Machina, is getting great reviews from the UK crowd where it has been screening. Hopefully that reaction will carry over here stateside. It’s easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year.
