Hi all! Stacey here with Lizzy Mason, Director of Publicity at Bloomsbury Children’s Books. This is the second of our two-part series on How and When to Catch The Elusive Publicity Department. Last month, Lizzy provided a typical publicist’s timeline. Today, she gives us her thoughts on everything from swag to freelance publicists. Lizzy, take it away.
Swag—Fact #1: people like free stuff. Fact #2: it doesn’t really help to give people free stuff that they won’t use and that people won’t see. So even if your book is about, say, bird watching, are you really going to get sales of your book by handing out expensive swag like binoculars with your book’s title on it? (Hint: no.) The best swag is simple. Bookmarks, pins/buttons, postcards, tote bags, and posters. If you want to make a few more expensive items for giveaways closer to on-sale, that’s cool too, but make sure it’s something people will use. I have a dozen sticky note pads, lanyards, and bracelets (even suntan lotion and a manicure kit) that will never see the light outside my cubicle walls.
Blogger Requests—Do not forward blogger requests piecemeal to your publicist. Yes, we’re known for being organized, but we’re also dealing with massive amounts of email. (Currently, I have more than 24,000 emails in my inbox. Not including the ones I’ve filed.) Keep an excel spreadsheet of requests (include name, blog name, address, email, and stats) and send them all at once about 5 months before on-sale. If someone requests an ARC after that, start a new list or refer them to your publicist (check with them first to be sure that’s okay). Also, please don’t put your publicist’s email address on your website. There should be a general email you can use for the publicity department or publisher.
Events—I don’t recommend doing events before on-sale unless you have backlist you can promote. In that case, bring your fancy swag for the new book! But if you don’t have a book to sell, it’s really just not worth it. People have short memories, even if they take your bookmark with them to “pre-order when they get home.” Save your time, money, and energy for when you have a book you can sell.
If you want to do events locally, check with your publicist for help arranging them. It’s best if we know what you’re doing. For several reasons, but mostly because if we know about an event, we can be sure the store orders books and gets them on time. Local bookstore events can be a great way to support the book, but don’t expect that the bookstore will bring a crowd for you. They’ll do their part with promotion, but you should be inviting your friends and family.
Are you traveling anywhere within the US around your publication date? Let your publicist know and they may be able to arrange an event. Especially if you’re going somewhere where you know a lot of people who may come out to see you.
Regional trade shows are another great way to meet the booksellers at bookstores in your general region. There are eight indie bookseller fall trade shows: NAIBA, NEIBA, SIBA, MPIBA, Heartland Fall Forum (for MIBA and GLIBA), SCIBA, NCIBA, and PNBA. (Google those acronyms!) Ask your publicist if you could be pitched for a signing, especially if it’s within driving distance. Your publisher may be willing to cover travel costs if it’s further away, but don’t expect that they will.
Announcements—Don’t announce anything without telling your publicist and marketing team. Sign a new deal? Going to a festival? Got a blurb? We can help with these announcements and determine the best time to make them. And, even just from a bandwidth perspective, it’s worth combining efforts.
Balance—Yes, the squeaky wheel gets grease. It’s true. But it’s all about balance. You want to walk the fine line between being a squeaky wheel and being overly persistent. So don’t email your publicist every time you have an idea. Gather your thoughts and put them into one email, then give him/her at least a few days to get back to you. Sometimes we have to research something or get an answer from another department. Silence does not mean we aren’t thinking about you. Also, anything you can do on your own, especially research, do it!
Freelance publicists—There are some amazing freelance publicists, but some are better than others, and some are better at working with your publisher than others. If you want to see what else a freelance can do to supplement your publisher’s plans, by all means, check into it. Some agents work with freelancers regularly and can suggest a few, some of your author friends might have recommendations (or warnings), and your publicist might even have some thoughts. I don’t always think it’s necessary, but it depends on what the publisher is doing. Definitely talk to your publicist, your agent, and your editor before hiring a freelancer.
Also, one last thing to know: I hate saying no. I hate it in my personal life, I hate in my professional life. I have trouble even saying no to my cat. Seriously, that’s why she’s so fat. So please respect the “No.” When I say we can’t cover your travel costs or pitch you for something, there is a reason. And I hated saying “No” just as much as you hated hearing it. Please don’t make me say it twice.
Congratulations on being published and good luck! I hope to see you at an event, conference, trade show, or festival one of these days!

When Out of the Box started over five years ago (!!), it was primarily show-and-tell type posts: a look at what we literally pulled out of boxes we received. The scope of the blog has widened considerably since then — adding app reviews, movie reviews, event recaps, and lots more — but I still collect notable items to give you a glimpse at how wacky, weird, and wonderful our mail can be. With 2015 drawing to a close, it’s time to do a big swag post (and clean out my desk shelves!).
We’re not really sure of the provenance of some of this stuff, so if you can shed some light on what items are and where they came from, please do! For more swag and surprising mail, check out the tag show and tell.
First category is…sweets! We love getting treats. Bonus points if they are beautiful and bookish.
I have three books releasing in spring 2016. Three! And while I'm talking about my Into the Fire trilogy, my release dates have changed. Here is the new release schedule:
INTO THE FIRE (book 1) February 16, 2016
OUT OF THE ASHES (book 2) March 22, 2016
UP IN FLAMES (book 3) April 12, 2016
I'm planning for the releases now. And that of course means thinking of SWAG ideas. But it makes me wonder: What do readers love to get as SWAG? What SWAG really grabs your attention and makes you interested in the book? Or is SWAG just fun to win and it doesn't really make you want to read the book?
SWAG can be so different depending on the book. I've given away necklaces, bracelets, pins, bookmarks, trading cards, charms, stickers, folders, pencils... Personally, I like SWAG that people can actually use. But does actually sway you to read the book? I think just like with everything else related to reading, it's subjective. A pretty piece of SWAG or a really different piece of SWAG might get your attention and make you curious about a book. Or you just might really like the SWAG. ;)
So why do authors put time and money into SWAG if it might not lead to readers? Like anything else, it's a way to potentially reach more readers, who may turn into fans. For that reason, I'll ask you, what is your favorite type of SWAG? What kind of SWAG makes you want to win the SWAG and maybe even read the book?
*If you have a question you'd like me to answer from the other side of the editor's desk, feel free to leave it in the comments and I'll schedule it for a future post.
Now that we're three weeks away from the launch of NEVERSEEN (*flails and hyperventilates*), it's time to make sure you guys have a chance to get some goodies! Thank you all for waiting so patiently.
(And warning: this is a long post with LOTS of important information, so make sure you read it all carefully so you don't miss your opportunity)
Some of you know how this works, but just in case you're new here, this giveaway is my way of trying to make up for the fact that it's impossible for me to tour to every city. If I could figure out a way to teleport, I'd meet each and every one of you in person. But since I can't, I like to make sure you all at least have a chance to get some of the fun things I give out at signings. So everyonewho pre-orders a copy of NEVERSEEN before the cut-off date (11/2/15) AND fills out the form at the end of this post*, will get this awesome NEVERSEEN swag mailed directly to them:
In case you can't tell from the picture, you'll get:
One hand signed, limited edition "Iggy has the Blues" postcard art print
One hand signed NEVERSEEN bookplate
One Neverseen symbol sticker
One Black Swan sticker
And yes, EVERYONE who pre-orders the book and fills out the form before the cutoff date will get that!!!!!
*cue infomercial announcer voice*
But wait--there's more!
I will also choose twenty (20) of you at random and give you this: (yes, in *addition* to the other swag!)
And again, in case you can't tell, that is:
One character art postcard (which is two-sided, by the way--but I can't show you the other side yet because some of the amazing character art has yet to be revealed)
One shiny alicorn button (the same alicorn buttons I'll be giving out at my launch party)
You don't have to do anything special to enter for the extra goodies. I'll choose the winners randomly from all the people who fill out the form for their swag. So that's the only requirement: you must fill out the form at the end of this post. Which of course means you also must pre-order a copy of NEVERSEEN.
And because I like to keep things simple, I'm not requiring proof of purchase. If you say you bought it, I trust you. I'm counting on you guys to be honest. But remember, lying makes Dex come up with mean pranks to play on you--meanwhile honesty makes Fitz and Keefe invite you to play base quest with them! :) I also won't be announcing the winners of the additional goodies. If you win the extra swag, you'll find out when your prize arrives in the mail.
I'm also willing to mail the prizes anywhere--even internationally. And it doesn't matter if you pre-order an eBook or a hardcover. As long as it's NEVERSEEN, it counts. And you can buy your copy anywhere books are sold. Of course I recommend shopping local from your favorite indie and supporting a local business. But it's up to you where you want to shop. (and scroll down for one more option before you make your decision)
I also know lots of you pre-ordered yours months and months ago. (which is so incredibly awesome, btw.) And if that's the case, you can definitely still fill out this form and get your free swag. But if you haven't bought it already, you must pre-order your copy before 11:59 pm (pacific time) on 11/2/15 AND fill out the form before then. After that I'll close the form and there will be no more ways to enter.
And there's no limit on how many swag packs you can get--as long as you buy the corresponding number of books. So if you buy five books, you can get five swag packs. Just make sure you tell me how many copies you bought so that I know how many swag packs to send you.
Also: since I'm leaving for tour before this contest even ends, there *will* be a delay on when your swag gets mailed to you. But I PROMISE I'll have them all in the mail before November 30th. (most likely much sooner). Sorry for the small wait, I can't mail stuff while I'm traveling.
(And by the way--if you haven't checked to see if I'm touring in your area, see my events page HERE. I hope I'll get to meet at least some of you!)
One final thing to keep in mind--since this is the point where many of you start panicking and emailing me saying BUT WHAT IF I'M NOT ONE OF THE LUCKY 20 WINNERS?????? I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT THE SPECIAL POSTCARD AND ALICORN BUTTON!!!!!! And in the past, I haven't had much I could tell you except, "sorry, it's all up to chance." But this year, the awesome people at Changing Hands Bookstore have helped me come up with a solution. So here's the deal: if you really really really want the extra postcard and the alicorn button (plus the other swag)--and can't make it to my launch party on 10/30 (or my Changing Hands event on 11/10)--there IS a way to guarantee you'll get them. If you buy your copy of NEVERSEEN through Changing Hands, they'll send you all the swag I've mentioned in this post, except the signed book plate, since your book will actually come hand signed by me. Changing Hands will ship anywhere--even internationally (there IS a shipping fee. You can call them for an estimate). And here's the important part--and it's a little confusing so make sure you read it carefully: If you decide to buy your copy of NEVERSEEN through Changing Hands in order to get the special goodies, you should NOT fill out the form below. Go to Changing Hands website HERE (or call them--they're super friendly) and order NEVERSEEN before 7pm (pacific time) on Tuesday, November 10th (yes, you also get a few extra days. They'll take orders until my event). And that's it. That's all you have to do. Changing Hands will take care of the rest and when your book arrives--voila! Awesome swag! Another advantage to this: this is the only way to have your book personalized to you. I know I used to personalize all the bookplates, but that's gotten WAY too time consuming. So if you want a personalized, signed book--AND all the fun goodies I'm giving away--Changing Hands is the only way to go. But again, you HAVE to buy your book from them.
Um........... I *think* that covers everything--but if I missed something, feel free to ask in the comments. (note: I will only answer questions posted in the comments on my website. If you're reading this on Goodreads or any of the other places it feeds out to, make sure you go to shannonmessenger.com to ask your questions)
And .... I guess that's it. Though I do want to once again thank all of you for incredible support. It has been absolutely AMAZING watching this series grow, and it wouldn't be happening if you weren't telling your teachers and friends, and posting your edits on instagram, and sending me your fan art, and all of the other amazing things you guys do. Keep it up--its working!
Only three weeks left until NEVERSEEN--EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, here's the form you need to enter, and if for some reason it doesn't load, click HERE to find it)
*Please note: you must be 13 years or older to fill out this form. If you're not, please have your parent or guardian fill it out for you
Wow, I can't believe we're already to Black Friday weekend--seriously where has the year gone??????
But deadline panicking aside (MEEP!), it's also time for my annual Black Swagday Giveaway!!!
Since this is the time of year where everyone has gifts on their minds--and I personally feel that signed books are THE BEST gifts anyone can give--I have a nice handy way for you guys to make your gifts even more special.
If you buy any of my books (Keeper of the Lost Cities, Exile, Everblaze, Let the Sky Fall, and/or Let the Storm Break) this weekend--which just so happens to be the biggest shopping weekend of the year, between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday--and fill out the form at the end of this post, I will send you the corresponding swag pack below.
If you buy any of the KEEPER books, I'll send you this (for each book purchased):
And in case you can't tell, that's: - a signed (and personalized) bookplate - 4 Team Stickers - 1 5x7 character art print (featuring the awesome illustrations by Courtney Godbey) (*whispers* if you buy more than one KEEPER book, I *might* throw in some other goodies as well... #justsayin')
And if you buy either of the SKY FALL books, I'll send you the corresponding swag you see in this pic (for each book purchased):
So if you buy Let the Sky Fall you'll get:
- a LTSF signed (and personalized) bookplate
- a LTSF bookmark
- a LTSF sticker
And if you buy Let the Storm Break you'll get:
- a LTSB signed (and personalized) bookplate
- a LTSB bookmark
- a LTSB sticker All of this swag is exclusive--only available here--and hand signed by me!
And there's no limit on how many I'll give away. Everyone who fills out the form between now and 11:59 pm pacific time on Monday, December 1, 2014 WILL get the swag. I'm also not requiring proof of purchase. If you say you bought it, I believe you. But remember, every time you lie, an alicorn's poop stops sparking AND WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE WITHOUT SPARKLY POOP??????
It also doesn't matter where you buy the book (though supporting your Local Indie Bookstore guarantees you a life of sunshine and happiness) or if you buy the paperback or the hardcover (ebooks and audiobooks count too!). And you're welcome to buy as many books as you want! (Just make sure you fill out the form separately for each book, so I know to send you more prizes).
Giveaway is also open internationally!!!
**Please note** This giveaway ONLY applies to books purchased between 11/26/14-12/1/14, and does NOT include books previously purchased. Of course I super-appreciate if you've bought my books before now, but I've also done previous giveaways for many of those purchases that you would've had a chance to take part of (sorry if you missed them). So this is only for new purchases, and if you are desperate for the swag you could always buy a book to give as a gift (what better gift could there be, really? Plus then you can get your friends/family/teachers hooked on the books so you have someone to talk about them with) and keep the swag for yourself--I won't tell! :)
Um... I *think* that covers everything--but if I missed something, of course feel free to ask any questions you may have in the comments.
Here's the form you'll need to fill out (and if it doesn't load for some reason, go HERE)
Now that we are only three weeks away from the launch of EVERBLAZE (*pauses to flail*), it's time for the annual Pre-Order Swag giveaway!!!!!!

And there's no limit on how many swag packs you can get. If you buy five books, you can get five swag packs (also five chances to be one of the winners for the extra goodies.) Just make sure you fill out the form separately for each copy you pre-order, so that I know how many swag packs to send you.

But I promise I'll have them all in the mail before November 30th. (most likely much sooner). Sorry for the delay, I can't deal with mailing stuff while I'm traveling.

Standard Definition: plunder, booty; money, valuables.
Recent Definition: confidence, style, carriage; related to swagger.
There's a saying going around the internet that “swag doesn’t pay the bills.” In Children’s Marketing, that is patently not true. Swag totally pays the bills—or, at least it helps sell books, which is what keeps the lights (and air conditioning) on in this funky-shaped building. [Note: Much of Macmillan is housed in New York City’s Flatiron Building, an angular architectural wonder that is on the National Register of Historic Places and has a perfect five-star rating on Yelp. Swag.]
Kids book swag is kind of like a party favor—if your book had a birthday bash or a wedding, it would thank you for coming and hand you a little gift on your way out that looked like one of the following:
Bookmarks: Classic swag! A bookmark doesn’t stray too far from the world of ink and paper. Almost anything can be a bookmark, including smaller books—but do this too much and you get a Matryoshka doll effect with a couple of broken bindings. Better to pick up the real deal!
Poster: When you’re not reading your book, it can still beautify your world. A children’s book poster usually consists of a spread from the book with a tagline that is funny, telling or inspiring. Since they are often displayed in libraries and bookstores, these posters may have messages which encourage you to read. Consider yourself warned.
Class Activities: Sometimes class activities are on the back of a poster; sometimes they’re on their own. You can check out book pages on the Macmillan website to see if there are bonus activities! Is this type of swag a little like the carrot sticks that one of your neighbors gives out on Halloween instead of candy? Maybe. Did that person know what was best for you? Definitely. Some of these activities were created by interns, specifically this intern, and they are FUN—and good for you.
Buttons, Tote Bags, Pencils: This genre of swag is my favorite, as it’s a killer combination of practical and expressive. Plus, sometimes tote bags contain… more swag. And books.
Alternative Swag: Here’s where things get really creative. Did you know that Shadow and Bone has its own nail polish? And that the upcoming Crewel has its own swanky purple wristband? 52 Reasons to Hate My Father had a giveaway that included heiress sunglasses like the one in the book. Step aside, Duane Reade, because Mackids has this covered. These novelty items are a ton of fun to come up with in marketing meetings—it’s an interesting challenge to design a small object that both conveys something about a whole book and is useful or cool on its own.
Now you might be asking yourself: Where can I get my hands on some swag? Easy! To get a party favor, go to a party. Check out author signings and book festivals. Buddy up with your local librarian. Consider working in publishing! The whole floor may or may not have sampled custom Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group cookies to make sure they were OK for ALA. (They were, but it’s always good to check.) Turn your swag on, and happy reading!
I feel like I have arrived as an author. A company has put up a non-literary piece of merchandise based on my books. (See the picture above, which is put on a mug) Next stop, action figures!
Thanks to all of you who stopped by during the LDS Authors Blog hop. I’m happy to announce that the winner is: Tobi H. If that’s you, please shoot me an email at [email protected] to claim your prize.
Sad News
Let’s get this out of the way first—my hard drive could not be recovered. Everything I had on there is gone forever. If you are reading this, go back up something precious to you now. This blog post will still be there when you get back.
I firmly believe things happen for a reason. Perhaps I was simply meant to rewrite the stuff I lost. The phoenix that rises might be better than what I had before. I’m going to go with that train of thought.
An anthology of the strange, bizarre, and just plain weird.
Zombies, vampires, ghosts, and …crickets? Try a taste of writing from two very different fantasy authors. Flash stories are super short and perfect for when you ‘just have a minute’. This anthology contains 15 stories from authors Sean Hayden and Jen Wylie. Run the rampart of emotions in this exciting mix of tales. From humor to twisted, there is something for everyone.
Contains adult language!
And really, the picture doesn't do them justice. (The flash + gloss = something Shannon didn't have time--or brain capacity--to figure out how to fix.) But these proofs give you a better idea of what they really look like:
(all credit for the prettiness goes to Keary, my incredibly talented designer)
So, in case you're wondering, there are two different bookmarks. They all have the same "front" (the design in the middle). But half of them have Sophie on the back, and half have Dex. That way my readers can pick which character they want.
OR, on very special occasions, I *might* be willing to give people one of each. LIKE TODAY!
Yes--that's right. Not only will the winners be the FIRST people to get their hands on my exclusive, limited edition, rare, collector's item bookmarks (that's what *I'm* calling them, at least)--but they will also be some of the only ones to have the complete pair! (I'm also happy to sign them if you want...)
So, if you want to be one of the cool people--and you KNOW you do--just leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm PST on Saturday, March 10th (psst--that's tomorrow. It's a quick contest this time!) I'll draw TEN lucky winners and post their name on Sunday, March 11th. International entries welcome.
(FYI: If this contest turns out to be popular I CAN be swayed into adding extra winners... #justsayin')
And in OTHER epic news...
according to my google alert last night... um...
KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
O.O
Which means ...
- Holy Crap--it's getting REAL!!!!
- I *may* have had to stop myself from buying a copy, just because I could!
- We've now entered that lovely,
66 Comments on Shiny, epic things--you know you want them!, last added: 3/12/2012
YAY!!!! *does a happy dance for you* Seriously, I am in love with your cover! Don't be surprised if you see some random post on Mundie Kids about me professing my love of this cover. LOL
The book marks look awesome! That is so exciting Keeper is finally available for pre-order. CONGRATS!!!
Awesome! I love them Shannon! They are quite pretty and I would, of course, LOVE to have them! Congrats on all the epicness. PRE-ORDER! It is getting real. And on another note, I have my own puppy snot, and while its not sparkly, you can keep that. ;)
The bookmarks look lovely! And you're giving away both, with a signature - it's too much fun! It has been such a treat to read all the steps along the way to your amazing debut. We (me and my eleven year old son, who has been eager to get his hands on the book since I showed him the description) can't wait to hold the book in our hands!!
Yes I want one! I wnat to lord it over my students and create interest for them so that when the book gets here in the fall they are all excited to read it!
"every time a copy of KEEPER gets pre-ordered a butterfly tickles a puppy and makes them sneeze RAINBOWS and SUNSHINE and SPARKLY PUPPY SNOT" Aaaannnddd . . . it's things like this that make me love you! Too dang funny! I'll pass on the sparkly puppy snot, but shiny bookmarks are COOL!! :-)
oh my goodness! those are sooooo beautiful. my son would love to win that (an by my son, i mean we'd wrestle over who gets it... he'd probably win). also- he'd probably interested in seeing the sparkly puppy snot. who am i kidding? we see that around this house all the time!
Some of the finer bookmark swag I have ever seen, please include me in your contest.
And promoting a pre-order is all about exclusivity, allowing the elite early adopters who have the foresight to take advantage of the opportunity in the early days the epicness that will be your long and prosperous publishing career to earn the right to say with pride and authority that they were there, in the beginning, at the pre-order ...
I like the rainbows and sparkles, but puppy snot? Um, no, I have enough kiddie snot for now. But thank you anyways. Congrats on the book marks and the pre order things. :)
OMG! Love!! THEY ARE GORGEOUS! :D Congrats sweetie. <3 And omg. I want want want want. <3 Thank you so so much for giving some away :D *Fingers crossed* :) Love, Carina

Ah! Congrats on the pre-order! Those bookmarks are absolutely gorgeous as well. (Though it doesn't take much for me to get obsessed with a bookmark.) I so need them! (Ya know, I really don't have enough bookmarks. Only 400 or so. =D) Thanks for the giveaway!
I want, I want I want!!!! I'm going to preorder it on BookDepository as well, but do you think I'll have the chance to see your book at the Bologna Children Book fair? I'll be there and would love to touch it!
I know my foreign rights agent will be there--and I know Keeper is in her catalog. But I have no idea if she has one of the ARCs. You'll have to let me know if you see it!
Such beautiful bookmarks! You should get your cover made into a poster and put some bookmarks around it and frame it. :) Of course, giving them away is good too. :D
Oh man...you are too funny. I would totally have to stop myself from ordering my own book too! CONGRATS on the pre-order! AND---awesomely cool coolio book marks!!
I'm SO in!! I'll even give away four... my daughter's elementary teacher, the elementary librarian, my friend (whose children are avid readers and who always buy the books I recommend, and the local librarian.
YAY!!
And I still just *LOVE* that cover. I hope you are still drooling over it. It is GORGEOUS!!
I'll give away four! I'm working as the resource director at an elementary school now, so I've got tons of teachers, librarians, and learny type friends to share this with. Plus, I'll mail one to Terrebonne Library!
I don't think I've thanked you yet, so I thought I'd pop in here to say these May B. items are indeed beautiful. Really breathtaking. I promise to share some, but I will definitely keep some for myself. Thanks all the encouragement you always drop my blog, Caroline! I can't wait to thank you by buying your beautiful book.
We interrupt our regularly scheduled program with a recap of Comic-Con 2011. Warning that this post is a bit long.
For those of you who don't know, Comic-Con is a massive event for lovers of all things comics, books, video games, art, pop culture and other geeky goodness. It is made of awesome and is one of the highlights of my year. There weren't too many big studio panels I was interested in this year, which left me with room to scout out some of the smaller panels as well as wander the exhibit floor more.
Books publisher were there in full force, with a lot of focus on YA and fantasy.
On Thursday I went to the No Damsels in Distress Here panel. The panelists were sci-fi and fantasy authors and the discussion was strong female characters -- what it takes to write them and the challenges of doing it. Not necessarily YA but a couple of the authors do have YA books. Panelists included Sherrilyn Kenyon, Seanan McGuire, Carrie Vaughn, Jeanne Stein , Chloe Neill, Merrie deStefano and Marie Lu. I was very impressed by all of them. They all had strong opinions and were very articulate in voicing them. It's clear that, while writing kick ass women still has its challenges, these authors are helping to break down those barriers by continuing to write strong characters.
no damsels in distress here - from left to right: Sherrilyn Kenyon, Seanan McGuire, Carrie Vaughn,
Jeanne Stein, Chloe Neill, Merrie deStefano and Marie Lu
I also went to two publisher panels, The Scoop at Simon & Schuster and What's Up Penguin. Both panels were packed and it is clear that the enthusiasm for YA is still going strong. It looks like a lot of exciting releases are coming down the pipeline and my to-read list has grown exponentially. There were also some really great raffle prizes during the panels. Unfortunately I did not win (boo!).
Here is a shot of the Penguin Teen booth. I am actually on the wrong side here
so you can see some of the Star Wars booth next door, but you get the idea.
OMG! I am SO jealous! Cannot believe you got to go! Looks like it was a BLAST! I had originally planned on going, had my costume for cosplay and everything, but tickets sold out! I was soooo bummed :[
but i'm glad to see you had a good time! And thanks for doing this giveaway :)
@diana - bummer that you couldn't get tix. yeah they were hard to get this past year. hopefully the site works better for next year so you can go. i am sure your costume is awesome.
I wish I culd have gone to this =( I guess I'll try next year. I just didnt want to hit all the traffic, plus Id be coming from Sacramento no bueno there lol It's really cool to see that you had an awesome time, and Thank you for sharing your Comic-Con goodies!!
I would have loved to have gone to something like that! You must have had an amazing time. Seriously, I bet your arms were tired by the end of the day!
Ahh, you're so lucky to go! I thought about going but changed my mind since I live too far and have a meager college student budget. Now I totally regret missing the experience over money. :(
Oh my gosh! This is epic, you must have had a fun time. I'm jealous!Margaret Stohl's glasses and Laini Taylor's hair are so B.A. All those books just made me die! You are one lucky person.
One day I must go to Comic Con! It has been decided! haha I agree, the Simon & Schuster booth is full of things I want too! Love the Darth Vader picture with Lisa Yee! :D
Thanks for sharing! I'm glad you had such an awesome time! :D
So jealous! My boyfriend and I watched it on G4 but so not the same. Crazy guy didn't even realize I was dying to go until I started drooling at the stuff shown on the screen. LOL.
Thank you for sharing the recap! Loved getting to see the book-minded side of things. :D

Stupid Fast -- Geoff Herbach
The summer Felton Reinstein turns sixteen, he "runs like an angry donkey," develops arms of "muscly jungle snakes," meets a beautiful pianist in a white nightie, and must contend with his mother's slow unraveling in this hilarious, painful, tender read.
The Year We Were Famous -- Carole Estby Dagg A mother-daughter team hikes 4,000 miles across the country to try and save the family farm while wearing out numerous pairs of shoes; battling blizzards, floods, twisted ankles, and lava fields; demonstrating the new-fangled curling iron to curious Indians; outwitting thieves; and learning the true meaning of love.
What a coincidence! I'm currently reading for review "The Daughter's Walk" by Jane Kirkpatrick, which is a historical novel based on the same story as "The Year We Were Famous." It's a wonderful story.
Liesl, I've heard a little about THE DAUGHTER'S WALK from author Carole Estby Dagg. I adored THE YEAR WE WERE FAMOUS and should pick up a copy of Kirkpatrick's book. It's fun, when I find a compelling story, to read different accounts. Please tell me what you think of it!
Stupid Fast looks like my kind of book, haha, well what I can tell from the one-sentence summary. I've heard that The Year We Were Famous is great, so I can't wait to try that one out. The story sounds amazing as well!
The sentence for Stupid Fast is a great hook. Makes me want to read it. And I bookmarked "The Year We Were Famous" when someone did a review on it - was that you? I can't remember, but it sounds like an awesome true story to read.
Lyn, the books couldn't be more different and wonderful. I interviewed Carole Estby Dagg about THE YEAR WE WERE FAMOUS earlier in the month. Her story is as amazing as Clara and Helga's.
Stupid Fast is laugh out loud hilarious and is incredibly touching, too. Geoff's compassion for his characters shines through in a beautiful, goofy way.
They all sound intriguing. Love your one-sentence reviews, Caroline! Heard about The Year We Were Famous from you, of course, but haven't heard about the others until now.
Beliebers can now get Justin in a bottle (with the launch of his new perfume, a fruity scent — tinted purple, of course — called Someday. Cuz, Justin says, “the way a girl smells is important to a guy!” Hmmm, will Selena Gomez... Read the rest of this post
Impressive post over at Emily's blog. And so true. Especially that parts about fearing the success of others and having conversations with phantom critics. How wise!
That was my first visit there, so thanks for the link!
