Long ago, in a land far, far away (okay, like a few streets away...literally) I used to sit and draw conté portraits in a mall. My boyfriend at the time worked for a shop, who allowed me to sit right in front offering my services. At the time I did it because I could and it made me a little money during high school. But to be honest, I didn't see it as something to rave about or be excited about.

Fast forward almost 20 years, and I can tell you that my view on portraiture has changed...dramatically.
Hand drawn portraiture brings a perspective, quality, and etherial impression a photograph lacks without professional editing. And this is exactly what I hope to bring to you. The act of drawing a portrait is very personal, challenging, and a HUGE honor and gift given to me as the artist.
I have this daydream to hand draw children, friends, and family into fairies and angels. I am starting this new service using colored pencil while I build my watercolor techniques in this subject matter. The idea behind Impressionable Portraits is they are lifelike, and look very close to the realistic photo, but with a hint of whimsy and sketchiness found only in drawing. They are not intended to be photo realistic, but definitely to look a lot like the person being drawn.

I am currently taking commission requests for these portraits, and still have room to get some done before the Christmas holiday. They take about a week to create. Please visit my request page, fill out the information form, and in the subject line write "Impressionable Portrait".
These are 5x7 inch colored pencil drawings for a flat fee of $200. Sprayed and matted in a white mat, ready to be placed in an 8x10 frame.
All I need is the photo, if it's fairy or angel wings, color palette, and something of interest to the individual.
It's my wish to provide an image filled with wonder, joy, and light around a person you love dearly. As a gift, or for yourself.

Most of us have vaguely positive sentiments about nurses, but at the same time, nursing is plagued by feminine stereotypes that continue to undermine the profession. These double-edged views are never more striking than in efforts to honor nurses, which often rely on emotional “angel” images rather than recognition of nurses’ health skills or tangible contributions to patient outcomes.
Whether they be songs about angels or demons, Heaven or Hell, the theme of the afterlife has inspired countless musicians of varying genres and has embedded itself into the lyrics of many popular hits. Though their styles may be different, artists show that our collective questions and musings about the afterlife provide us with a common thread across humanity. Here are some of the songs that best represent this wide range of emotions that many people have about what lies beyond.
Have you ever Googled yourself? I do. It might look pretentious, but it really gives an insight to where your name is being used, and for me that includes my art. Thankfully I never find much of anything except for my own posts AND these gorgeous cards!
I license out my images to an online craft store called Crafts and Me based in the UK. She sells digital stamps and some rubber ones too. On her blog they host challenges for those who love to make their own cards and paper crafts.
Before I actually do the tag, today is Gaudete Sunday, and my little niece Chloe received her
First Holy Communion today.
She was so excited, it was so cute. She was shaking when she went up to receive, she was so jazzed. We were all so proud. :-) (That is an example of how NOT to repeat the word "So" so often.) Anyhoozle, hope your Advent continues well!

1.) When does the Christmas season officially 'start' in your house? Officially?... It starts AFTER Christmas. Right now we're in the Advent season. However, if you're talking about Christmas SPIRIT, it kind of rolls up (on me) on Thanksgiving.
2.) What is your earliest memory of Christmas? I remember being super little, like three or four, and waking up and smiling into one of my older sisters' face as she woke me and hissed, "It's Christmas!" I remember thinking, "Wow, Christmas. That's so cool!"
3.) What is something that is something that is iconically (if that's even a word) Christmas for you or your family? Probably the food. Christmas morning is the only day in the world that we have Italian sausage and soft rolls and orange juice for breakfast, and usually the *main* day that we have gnocchi and ham for dinner. We also do the Advent wreath and sing O Come Emmanuel at dinner.
4.) What are some of your Christmas Traditions? We always listen to O Holy Night (Nat "King" Cole version and Josh Groban version) on Thanksgiving. We also watch Holiday Inn on Thanksgiving. We celebrate St. Nicholas Day on December 6 and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8. We do the Advent wreath and do Christmas rings, counting down the days to Christmas. We decorate the house, usually starting around December 6th or 8th. We bake and make gnocchi the week before Christmas. We watch Christmas movies. Many, many, many. :-)
5.) What is one of the traditions that you want to carry on even after you're married? Just one? I want to make gnocchi and ham every Christmas, and I definitely want to keep the tradition of Epiphany.
6.) What if your favorite thing when preparing for Christmas? The baking, decorating or cleaning? The decorating. Totally, the decorating.
7.) What is a special/unique Christmas memory? About 23 years ago my Grandpa passed, right around Christmas time, and my mom was not here for Christmas. So all of us kids at home saved one present and left it under the tree, and when she got back in January we celebrated our first Epiphany on January 6th, and we have celebrated it ever since.
8.) What do you like better, giving or receiving gifts? I LOVE giving gifts. I sit right next to the person and am like, "Open it more... and more... and more... can you guess what it is from the box? Huh, huh, can ya, can ya?"
9.) What are some of your favorite Christmas cartoons? Mickey's Christmas Carol. How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The First White Christmas - The Story of the First Christmas Snow.
10.) What are some of your favorite Christmas movies? It's A Wonderful Life (My absolute FAVORITE.) Angel In the House (a recent discovery). Silent Night. A Christmas Carol with Reginald Owen. (These are the four I NEED to watch.)
After that I like to watch: One Magic Christmas. While You Were Sleeping. Doctor Who (Eleven's) Christmas Specials. A Keaton Christmas Carol.
11.) Do you have a real Christmas tree or an artificial tree? We have an artificial. I am of two minds between real and artificial. I love the smell and authenticity of real. I don't like how they shed needles or die so soon. However, I don't like how fake smell... odd, but I do like that you can leave them up through the entire season.
12.) Do you have a favorite Christmas book/story? The Crib of Bo'Bossu. Makes me cry. EVERY time.
13.) What is your favorite Christmas song? O Holy Night (Josh Groban and Nat Cole's version) Believe (Josh Groban)\ What Child is This (Josh Groban and another version that is a group version that I can't find that I LOVE.) Little Drummer Boy (Tennessee Ernie Ford and Josh Groban) In the Bleak Midwinter (Julie Andrews) The Little Road to Bethlehem (Hayley Westenra) Peace Shall Come (Hayley Westenra) And too many others too count. But those are the top seven I could recall one after the other.

It's not normal to close your business for any period of time, and if it is, it doesn't feel like it when you do.
I purchased an Epson Stylus 1400 a couple of weeks ago. Put aside the anxiety of having yet another large format printer, and was pretty excited about it!
Got it all set up (after taking the studio apart trying to figure out where the beast was going to sit), printed my first page, and it had a band of ink at the bottom....just like my Artisan 50! The whole reason I started looking at printers was because of that band of ink.
I just couldn't believe it. A brand new $300 printer was already spitting ink.
The next day I decided to give the poor printer another chance, and the prints came out perfect. Oooookay. It became a pattern. I gave the printer a week. Every other printing "session" was like before. One day, bands of ink, next day...nothing. I decided to risk my business and not settle for this printer. I am sending it back.
B&H Photo was amazing and are paying for the return and giving a full refund. It was my intention to purchase another one just to see if what I got was a lemon (there are several of those in the Epson line), but I was told they don't sell it anymore. Say wha?!
And it's true, they don't. Looks like Epson is pushing everyone to buy from their new line. Sheeeah right, already bad reviews.
So I decided to give myself some more time than a week to solve this. My business runs on prints, and I can't afford to do large quantities at a time. It has to be on demand. I have started to freshen up my Imagekind gallery for now, so prints are available.
I thought about just purchasing another Artisan 50 and printing my limited editions through Imagekind or another on demand printer. I feel like I was just in this boat about 6 months ago. I'm not positive what is going to happen, but the shop will be open on way or another on March 19th.

Week in Watercolor
Spent a couple hours figuring out designs to place into the background. The gorgeous patterns of the East are insane! It was pretty overwhelmed but found some that were simple enough for me to understand.
I can do complex hair, but find it increasingly frustrating to do geometric or intense patterns. Something I must practice more often!
I resolved the bottom half of the painting and added the famous red cord (or sash for this piece) from the story. I think it tied (no pun intended) everything together beautifully.
Beautiful work as usual. I purchased an Epson R1900 and had so many problems I sent it back. They replaced it and the problems still persisted. My son-in-law thought to try replacing the USB port in my computer and it fixed the problem completely. It wasn't the printer at all. Just a thought.
Not only am I working in the Little Red Book (about once a week), but I've also found complete solace in creating these more refined sketches. Beyond anything my true love lies in drawing.
I'm trying to create work that reflects me, even if it's commissioned work or something for licensing. If I'm not connected to it somehow it lacks heart and thus very little connection with others. In watching my sales on Etsy, the pieces that sell the most are the ones my heart truly connected with.
"Waiting"
This piece was first an exercise to draw from observation, but after I drew her eye I connected with her and the emotion she's feeling. I really began to pour out my desires into her as I drew, thinking about everything I'm learning patience for.
The box was added at the very end problem solving how to express to others what she was feeling. I personally am patiently waiting for the next big chapter in my life...a larger family. "As I wait you make me stronger." I look forward to this painting being a more explorative piece in the watercolor stage.
"Life Song"
I wanted to draw another piece similar to "Cardinal Song" but bigger, so the other day I just began sketching with "Cardinal Song" by my side.

Tennins are spiritual beings found in Japanese Buddhist art that are similar to western angels. The can fly, and sometimes wear feathered kimonos called hagoromo ("dress of feathers").

Darla Jade and the Balance of the Universe is part of an exciting YA series for fans of fantasy, adventure and Christian literature.
The story begins in a cemetery when 13-year old Darla Jade's soul is 'raised from her grave' by Striker, the creature that calls the souls at the resurrection before they're to go to either Heaven or Hell. Darla is sent to Heaven while another boy, Johnny, is sent to into the vortex of Hell. Once in Heaven, Darla must attend school for training as a Guardian Angel--or Guardian, for short. There, she makes friends but also has a tough time controlling her temper and rudeness. She keeps getting demerits for bad behavior. However, Darla is brave and good at heart and this is what matters, especially because, as the story develops, it becomes clear that she is 'The One,' the Guardian who will save the world from Evil. In the Heaven academy, Darla learns a lot from famous teachers such as Leonardo DaVinci, Tesla and Benjamin Franklin.
Meantime, down in Hell, Johnny and other demons are planning to tip the Balance of the Universe in the forms of a evil storm on earth. For this to succeed, Darla must be destroyed, for she is the only one who can stop it and bring the Balance back.
I have a lot of good things to say about this YA fantasy: the pace is quick, with lots of dialogue and action scenes; the worlds of Heaven and Hell are rich, intriguing and imaginative. Author D. L. Reynolds certainly has a flair for world building. What I especially like about it is that the world building doesn't come in information dumps that slow down the pace, but instead it's incorporated into the scenes with the action and dialogue. One aspect that got my attention, though--and this is only an observation--is that the first several chapters of the story read more like middle grade (for ages 8-12), and it is only after some time that the plot acquires more 'heavy' elements which are more suitable for the YA audience (13 and up). Overall, I'd say this is a novel for the tween and YA audiences and not for middle graders.
Darla Jade and the Balance of the Universe was a surprisingly interesting and pleasant read and I look forward to the 2nd book in the series.
A new job with intense hours. (40 hours in three and a half days.)
My dear friend and Uncle stricken with end stage pancreatic cancer even after having gone to doctor after doctor only to be diagnosed too damn late because they weren't listening to him.
My friend's daughter in law, age 32, diagnosed with bladder cancer after having been given three rounds of antibiotics and NO urinalysis tests. She had surgery to have the tumor removed, but here we are three weeks later and now she has a tumor on one of her kidneys.
And now another friend facing her own challenges and waiting to confirm a cancer diagnosis after months of being ill. Let's hope it's a false alarm and her battle can be won.
What's happening here? Aren't we in a time where diagnoses are easier to form?
I'm exhausted and sad today.
All I can do is send out prayers and stay true to myself by being authentic.
I miss you all and love you. Once I get adjusted to all of these changes and life challenges I will be better at visiting.
Life is good still, but overwhelming at times, no?

That's so hard and I'm sorry about both the people struggling with cancer diagnoses. I think there is still much left to be discovered so that it isn't nearly as clear-cut as we'd like it to be. ♥
What a tragedy, my heart goes out to them and you. One would think that diagnosis could be swifter this day and time. Hang in there, keep praying. I will pray for you and those dear to you. Wow, that's a tough 40 hours and would certainly take some adjustment! I thought of you today and almost looked you up to ask advice about Dudley, finally got a ER vet though. Take care.
aw, lo, too much to handle in such a short time, it can seem so unfair and discouraging. i am so sorry to hear about your uncle, i know how much he means to you.
cancer is such a horrible horrible thing. i pray for a day when it takes its last victim, when we win that battle and know those cells will never again prevail.
what a schedule you have! that takes some servious getting use to. i know you will do a wonderful job in every way. and i'm glad you are back in the field of animal care.
AND: i'm glad we are friends. i know if ever one of us needs to be held up or comforted, there will be no question....
My those hours..............I can imagine it will take time to get used to that and to find a whole new rhythm. Just now it is all about surviving those long days and to digest all the new information. But when in your very little free time you have to deal with loved ones facing the battle of cancer it can be overwhelming :( I am so sorry about your dear uncle and friends. Of course I will keep them in my thoughts and hope for the best. But you are in my thoughts all the time as well dear. Giving you a virtual big big hug!!! We all understand that you can't be at 2 places at the same time so take your time to adjust and in your time off please do some things that make you feel good. ♥M

40 hours in 3 days? what does 5 days hold? is this going to be common? That's alot of work dear....lot's to get used to. I hope you are liking it, and finding yourself at home with the people and the animals. Stay well, OK? Don't worry about us - we know you are busy busy busy
I hope you get some rest. You are under some terrible stress. My Mother died of pancreatic cancer. One of the most difficult cancers to diagnose and then treatment isn't always affective. It is a sad thing. I hope you feel better today. Have a great week. Always be authentic, especially with yourself.
Listen to Marianne - when you do have those now-precious *free* days....do something you LOVE to do...be it painting, walking Em down by the water (where we went), lose yourself in the myriad of changing leaves.... try to let go the stress of the job... it will take time, but you already are doing a fabulous job there and are endearing yourself to all.

Wow.. thats a lot of work in a short period of time. I hope this isnt going to be normal. Doesnt seem legal some how. So sorry about all the illnesses. We just lost a dear friend of ours a week or so ago. It was a shock to all. We are still kind of reeling from it so I understand. Best wishes to all.

That is hard news to take in. In my small world we've dealt with two cancers and sudden heart attack death in just a few weeks. It does bring to light what's important and the reminder to make the most of every day. I'll be adding you and your uncle and friends to my prayer list.
Oh how sad. Yes, despite all the research and treatments this old cancer bug seems determined, doesn't it. I'm sending some positive thoughts to you and your friends, for their comfort and wellness.

For a split second I thought of doing something related to the band Journey, but since it wouldn't be very positive, I resisted the urge. I guess you could call this the ultimate journey, depending on your behavior... Enjoy. Process was hand drawn sketch, scanned into Illustrator, redrawn with brush tool. Copied and pasted into Photoshop and then colored in assorted layers.

The painting was created for someone who lost a child, it like many commissioned pieces, this was especially spiritual. Lots of prayer during the entire process until paint. I then just let it be without thought as to what I was doing. Kind of letting my hand do it's own thing.
I am anxious to see how the parent will respond to this painting, and it is my hope to share this as a print in the future. But I am leaving that up to the recipient. I will let you all know either way. :)

Sara, this is breathtaking! Truly a masterpiece by you, my friend. Such Hope, such Love and a wonderful way to show God's Light. I am so touched by this painting and the look in the little girls eyes. I am sure it will bring comfort to the individuals you did it for. You are a blessing, sister.
