Novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard has joined F+W Media as the head of their new young adult fiction imprint, Merit Press Books. The imprint will release five titles this year and has thirteen books slated for 2013.
Oprah Winfrey selected Mitchard’s 1996 novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, as the first title to kick off her famous Book Club. Mitchard has written both fiction and nonfiction, publishing books for adult, young adult and children’s readers.
Mitchard gave this statement in the release: “I’d wanted to be an editor for years, but didn’t see myself in a huge box in Manhattan. F+W made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: the chance to work with new authors and established authors on something so important. It’s exactly where I want to be at this point in my career. Madonna has had a pretty colorful life, and pretty soon you’ll be able to see it in full color. Independent publisher Bluewater Productions has a new comic book coming out in August based on the star’s life.
Female Force: Madonnais the illustrated story of the star’s life as written by CW Cooke and drawn by Michael Johnson. The book tells the story of how a struggling dancer in New York became one of the biggest pop stars in history. The book also highlights Madonna’s influence on other artists. “Most pop stars owe everything to this woman. It’s amazing all of the things that she’s done in her lifetime, and I have a feeling that this is still only the beginning,” stated Cooke.
Bluewater’s Female Force series featured other prominent women, including: Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, JK Rowling, Ellen Degeneres and Sarah Palin.
After 25 record-breaking years on the air, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will be airing its last episode today. There is no question that Oprah Winfrey and her show have helped to inspire and change millions of lives. First Book is particularly inspired by Ms. Winfrey’s love for reading and support of literacy initiatives.
After the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes, First Book pledged (and delivered) five million books to help rebuild. Oprah’s Angel Network made a significant contribution to our effort in the form of a $250,000 grant. That support – the first major support our Gulf Coast efforts received – served as a catalyst for our successful work there, which continues to this day.
Most recently, we were inspired by the 13,000 people in “Oprah’s Surprise Spectacular” show audience this past Monday who held up a children’s book to be donated to a child in need through First Book in tribute to Ms. Winfrey’s legacy. Thanks to the audience’s generosity, more than 25,000 new books in total will be given to children in low-income communities throughout the country, including a donation of over 1,100 books for the children at KIPP Believe College Preparatory Academy in New Orleans, the school that was featured in the broadcast.
There has been no greater ambassador for literacy than Oprah Winfrey. We are grateful for her legacy of generosity and service.

Filmmaker Mary McDonagh Murphy has created a new documentary about celebrated authorHarper Lee entitled Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird.
According to Shelf Awareness, the film will feature interviews with Anna Quindlen, Tom Brokaw, James McBride, James Patterson, Wally Lamb, and Oprah Winfrey. Some of those celebrities can be seen in the trailer embedded above.
Initially, the film will have a limited release in New York City and Los Angeles starting May 13th with a nationwide release to follow. Last year, Murphy published Scout, Atticus, and Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of To Kill a Mockingbird for the book’s 50th anniversary.
Novelist James Freywill return to Oprah Winfrey‘s television show for the first time since she criticized him onstage for fabrications in his memoir, A Million Little Pieces.
The NY Post has the scoop from an anonymous source: “Oprah apologized to James a couple of years ago, and he appreciated it. So he agreed to go back on her show and talk about everything that’s happened over the last five years.”
As February comes to an end, people who have already read The Autobiography of Malcolm X and My Bondage and My Freedom might need more book suggestions for Black History Month. Bluewater Productions has released a comic collection called Black History: Leaders to celebrate.
Here’s more from the press release: “The 96-page anthology includes the unabridged issues featuring Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, and Condoleezza Rice. These biographies were previously published as individual issues of Bluewater’s biographical comic titles Female Force and Political Power.”
Oprah Winfrey picked a classic double header for her latest book club selection, choosing Charles Dickens‘ Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities.
During her announcement, Winfrey noted: “I’m going old, old school … Normally I only choose books that I have read, but I must shamefully admit to you all that I have never read Dickens.”
Winfrey will use Penguin’s new $20 paperback containing both books and nearly 800 pages. Amazon noted yesterday they have free Kindle editions of both titles. Penguin offers a $7.99 digital edition that includes illustrations, author background, and historical information.
“I think 10 years is a long time to spend with one character,” said Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, making it clear he would probably not play the wizard if J.K. Rowling published more books.
During her Oprah Winfreyinterview earlier this year, Rowling surprised Harry Potter fans when she noted: “I definitely could write an eighth, ninth, tenth book. I could, easily.” In the video embedded above from 2009, Radcliffe and cast mate Rupert Grint talked about the film.
More recently, Radcliffe reacted with surprise at Rowling’s revelation. He told Sky News: “Oh God, she promised me categorically that there wouldn’t be another book involving Harry … I think 10 years is a long time to spend with one character.”
Over four years ago, YouTube users posted the video embedded above–a clip of a man reading a book while driving 75 miles per hour on a California highway.

More importantly, we would like suggest readers add the word “books” to Oprah Winfrey‘s recent No Phone Zone Pledge: “I pledge to make my car a No Phone Zone. Beginning right now, I will do my part to help put an end to distracted driving by committing to drive as responsibly as I can.”
According to Book Signing Central, former President George W. Bush will make an appearance on November 11th at the National Museum of the US Air Force. Next, Bush will open the Miami Book Fair on November 14th.
The Washington Post reports: “Bush is scheduled to speak at the 27th annual Miami Book Fair International, which runs from Nov. 14-21. The former president will present his memoir ‘Decision Points,’ on Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. Book fair organizers told The Associated Press that tickets to Bush’s presentation are $40. That includes a presigned copy of the book.”
Plenty of celebrities–from Kristen Bell to Elizabeth Banks–have tweeted about Suzanne Collins‘ Hunger Games trilogy. But, not all of them have their very own talk show. That’s what sets Tyra Banks apart from all the rest. You can read Banks’ Twitter book review in the image embedded above: “Soooooo good!!!”
Shelf Life poked fun at the review: “That is especially impressive, since six o’s and three exclamation points is the highest possible score in Tyra’s rating system. (By comparison, she thought Twilight was ‘Soooo good!!’ and she broke with critical consensus by only giving the new Franzen a tepid ‘Soo good!’)”
Although book tour dates have yet to be announced, former President George W. Bush will be interviewed by Matt Lauer and Oprah Winfrey when his memoir arrives next month.
Lauer will air his interview November 8th. Winfrey will air her interview on November 9th, the day of the book’s release. The regular hardcover will cost $35, but 1,000 copies of it will be signed and specially cloth-bound with a $350 price-tag.

The great Michael Jackson once offered to make a Harry Potter musical for J.K. Rowling. The story came out during a recent Oprah Winfrey interview special with the bestselling author.
“Were you reluctant to increase the empire?” asked Winfrey in the video embedded above. Rowling replied: “It could be so much worse. Michael Jackson wanted to do a musical … I said no to a lot of things. For me, I love the films, I love the books, and there’s elements that I love around it.”
Winfrey called it “one of the most fascinating interviews I’ve ever conducted.” The women spoke at Edinburgh’s Balmora Hotel, the place where Rowling finished Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. Rowling mentioned that if she wanted, she could write more Harry Potter books. She explained: “I definitely could write an eighth, ninth, tenth book. I could, easily.”

in a run-down house off a Mississippi dirt road...No indoor plumbing, just an outhouse, not even a bed of her own. ... God only knew what would become of that child.
Well, we all know now what became of that intelligent and precocious child. An inspiring story of Oprah Winfrey's earliest years; a paean to faith and the power of words.

DEAR OPRAH - I REALLY WANT TO HAVE MY PLAYS PRODUCED
Got a great idea yesterday as a possible, perhaps unrealistic but desperate means, in which to get one of my plays produced.
Recently, Oprah Winfrey - "the" Oprah - announced her retirement from her television show. Instead, she has created the OWN - Oprah Winfrey Network that will feature programs focusing on a variety of subjects. One particular aspect of the network caught my eye, which is an opportunity for your ordinary people to fulfill a dream via "Your Own Show" - 'Oprahs Search for the Next TV Star'. This presented a perfect opportunity for me to pitch my search for my plays or at least one of my plays to be produced. So I signed up for the newsletter and then filled out the form, my stomach doing flip-flops all the time. I'm really neurotic about these plays and in the past have found it difficult to even send them out. This insecurity is akin to mothers having a baby and then having to allow them to leave once mature or in my case, ready for Broadway...or anywhere, actually.
Everything was fine until I reached the end where a photo was required to accompany the form. Searching through my photos I selected one, downloaded it as an attachment after which is was refused as too large. Returned to my photos and once again attempted to download another photo with the same result. No matter which photo I attempted to attach, they were all refused.
Hence, the reason for taking to my playwriting blog in the hope that Ms Winfrey and company will somehow come accross this and consider my pitch. I'm placing this issue in the hands of destiny and fate. In this case a photo "less than 500K or a maximum resolution of 500x500 pixels" just won't work for me but then words are my strong point.
Reports are coming out that Oprah Winfrey will be hosting a nighttime talk show on her new network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). The hour-long show, Oprah’s Next Chapter, is reportedly going to take her out of the studio and allow her to travel and interview people. She has also said that she is planning on a book club related show for the network.

In 1979, psychiatrist Alexandra Symonds, published an unusually candid article. When her profession dealt with families “where the main disturbance was violence against the wife or sweetheart,” she observed, they focused on how the women provoked their husbands, or how the women were getting satisfaction in some obscure way by being beaten. “The final proof of all this,” she wrote, “was invariably a learned statement such as ‘After all, why doesn’t she leave him?’” (more…)
