1. The Tale Behind the “Greatest Love Story” Ever Told is Coming to Print

Time announced it in 2013 as “the best news you’ll read all day.” It still is.

The tale behind the “greatest love story” ever told, of a rhyming giant kind and fencing Spaniard bold, of Westley, handsome farm boy, and Buttercup, a beauty coy — is coming to print. Our Westley, Cary Elwes, will lead a romp to “have fun stormin’ da castle” in his memoir As You Wish (October 14; Touchstone) on the making of the well-loved hit film, “The Princess Bride.”

The iconic swashbuckling rom-com introduced Robin Wright (wait, sweet Buttercup turned into Claire Underwood?), and starred Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, (I’m not a witch, I’m your wife!”) Carol Kane, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon, Peter Falk, and a young Fred Savage. It is applauded as one of the Writers Guild of America’s “101 Greatest Screenplays” and the American Film Institute’s “100 Greatest Love Stories.”

Elwes told the Hollywood Reporter that he was inspired to share “inconceivable” behind-the-scenes stories of making the hit during a cast reunion celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary at the 2012 New York Film Festival. (more…)

13. Stephen King To Publish New Novel in Dark Tower Series

Novelist Stephen King has finished a new installment in his Dark Tower series. Entitled The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole, the book will be published next year.

King (pictured, via) conceived the genre-bending fantasy series when he was 19-years-old. Over the course of his career, King has published seven books and a short story about the fantasy world.

The novelist explained the new book on his blog: “I realized there was at least one hole in the narrative progression: what happened to Roland, Jake, Eddie, Susannah, and Oy between the time they leave the Emerald City (the end of Wizard and Glass) and the time we pick them up again, on the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis (the beginning of Wolves of the Calla)? … It won’t tell you much that’s new about Roland and his friends, but there’s a lot none of us knew about Mid-World, both past and present. The novel is shorter than DT 2-7, but quite a bit longer than the first volume—call this one DT-4.5. It’s not going to change anybody’s life, but God, I had fun.” (Via Matt Staggs)

Splinter, Sterling Publishing’s young-adult imprint, will launch with a three-part fantasy series by Colleen Houck.

20. Andrea Cremer Talks About Werewolves, Gender Issues, & Power Struggles

What do you do with a PhD in history? Write fantasy fiction, of course.

Andrea Cremer (pictured) did that in her debut novel, Nightshade. She used her scholarship and research to incorporate social issues about gender, power struggles, and sexuality into her book. We caught up with Andrea to find out a little bit more.

Q: Nightshade is about a werewolf. How do you stick to conventional werewolf canon and mythology and how do you deviate?
A: One of the things about Nightshade that I think is really different is that it’s described as a werewolf book, but I often tell people it’s not a werewolf book because it does break so much from werewolf convention. I grew up in the north woods of Wisconsin. I’m literally right on Lake Superior and in the middle of a national forest, so the wilderness to me was something that was really wonderful. I spent most of my days as a young girl out making up imaginary worlds and imaginary people with my brother and my best friend in the forest. That was the way we liked to spend our days.

Wolves and other wild animals to me were always fascinating; they weren’t something that were scary or monstrous, they were just cool. And so, I never pictured myself actually liking werewolves in terms of people picking teams for either vampires or werewolves. In all my reading, I had always firmly been in the vampire camp. I couldn’t figure out why it was that I didn’t like werewolves.

21. Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush Series to End with Tempest

Becca Fitzpatrick‘s young-adult series, Hush, Hush will come to a close with the third and final book, Tempest. Publication is set for October 18th, 2011 with an initial print run of 250,000 copies. Fitzgerald will tour the country in support of the release.

Fitzpatrick had this statement: “Hush, Hush was my very first book, and it’s so thrilling to see it embraced by so many readers. It’s been a truly life changing experience. Patch and Nora’s story isn’t half told until Tempest, and I hope readers will find it the most enticing book yet.”

One of our acquaintances will dress up as Hunger Games‘ heroine Katniss Everdeen for Halloween. The Hush, Hush series features Patch Cipriano, a fallen angel and supernatural hottie. Perhaps “Patch” angels will also make a splash next costume season? Replicating this cover wouldn’t be too much of a challenge, would it?

22. J. D. Salinger Biography Coming from Random House

Slawenski founded the Dead Caulfields website in 2004, a major resource for Salinger fans. Earlier this week, the site posted a BBC video of the reclusive author–we’ve embedded the YouTube video below.

Here’s more about the biography: “[It] provides a tremendous amount of new information, shedding light for the first time on many unknown events in Salinger’s life: his wartime romance; the inspiration behind The Catcher in the Rye; the impact of his experience fighting in the D-Day landings; the true story behind Franny and Zooey; full details on his romance with Oona O’Neill (later Mrs. Charlie Chaplin); his office intrigues with famous New Yorker editors and writers; his friendship with Ernest Hemingway; surprising evidence that he intended to continue publishing after his last story appeared in l965, and much more.”

Q: From your experience, which book/author receives the most tattoo requests?

E: Shel Silverstein, by far.

Q: What was the most interesting “story” behind a tattoo?
E: Best story by far is how Jamie Garvey of Gainesville, Florida, came to copy his e.e. cummings tattoo (“how do you like your blue-eyed boy now, mr. death?”) off the one and only Harry Crews.

24. Two Journalists Shop Books about Chilean Miners’ Ordeal

Guardian journalist Jonathan Franklin and New York Times journalist Alexei Barrionuevo are both hoping to write about the 33 miners rescued in Chile yesterday. The BBC report embedded above covers the rescue efforts.

Crain’s New York reports that Franklin has already sold his proposal to several European houses, including the British publisher, Transworld. 33 Men, Buried Alive: The Inside Story of the Trapped Chilean Miners is scheduled for release early next year. George Lucas of Inkwell Management represents Franklin in New York.

Barrionuevo has not yet submitted a proposal, but is represented by Esther Newberg of ICM. According to the article, his book will “cover the aftermath of the rescue and the complications that arise as the miners deal with being international heroes.”

Here’s more from the article: “The concern among publishers is that the public will get enough of the heart-stirring story from all of the news accounts and won’t have any need of a book. ‘We’re wondering how much the immediate coverage will chew up the story,’ said one editor who was considering 33 Men. Despite those concerns, some publishing executives feel that the miners’ story is dramatic and compelling enough to warrant a book.”
