Since the 1930s, several men driving northeast along Archer Avenue between the Willowbrook Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery have reported picking up a young female hitchhiker. This young woman is dressed somewhat formally and said to have light blond hair, blue eyes, and wearing a white party dress. Some more attentive drivers would sometimes add that she wore a thin shawl, or dancing shoes, and that she had a small clutch purse, and is very quiet. When the driver nears the Resurrection Cemetery, the young woman asks to be let out, whereupon she disappears into the cemetery. Sometimes, the story ends there. Other times, the curious driver follows the girl into the cemetery and finds her shawl or purse on a grave marked "Mary".
She left the ballroom and started walking up Archer Avenue. She had not gotten very far when she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver, who fled the scene leaving Mary to die. Her parents found her and were grief-stricken at the sight of her dead body. They buried her in Resurrection Cemetery, wearing a beautiful white dress and matching shoes.

Huntress Reviews are so cool! They just gave me an amazing review for my August 2009 release, DEAD GIRL IN LOVE. Here's a preview of how it will be posted on review sites:
TITLE: Dead Girl in Love (Dead Girl #3, Aug. 2009)
AUTHOR: Linda Joy Singleton
13 ISBN: 9780738714073
10 ISBN: 0738714070
5 STARS!
Amber Borden thought she was through being a Temp Lifer. The first time she found herself in someone else's body had been due to a mistake. The second time had been much sooner than expected. Amber's deceased grandmother, Grammy Greta, who is the head of the Temp Life program on the other side, knows Amber does not want a third time. But when Grammy Greta informs Amber that the living body who now needs a Temp Lifer is Alyce, Amber agrees to one last assignment. After all, who better to BE Alyce than her best friend Amber? Not to mention that Amber feels she let Alyce down during the last assignment. Alyce had needed Amber and Amber had not been there for her. Now is Amber's chance to make it up to her.
Alyce has always kept herself distant from others. Amber is her only true close friend. But Amber quickly learns how little she really knows about Alyce's private life. The surprises begin the first second she wakes up in Alyce's body to find herself enclosed in a coffin! Alyce has been searching for "The Lost". That is the only thing her Temp Lifer's Guidance Evaluation Manual (GEM) will tell her. Oh, and that Alyce's problem has to do with love.
Figuring out what "The Lost" is turns out not to be Alyce's only secret from everyone. Alyce's mother has a mental problem. Alyce has been hiding and dealing with her mom's mood swings, personality changes, and basically having to be a mother to her own mom. Lucky for Amber she has a few friends "in the know" to help her out. Dustin, Amber's hacker/geek/activist friend, can help with learning what "The Lost" is and locating it. Grammy Greta is only a phone call away since she is the Temp Lifer in Amber's real body. But nobody can help Amber with the biggest problem of all. The Dark Lifer known as Gabe Deverau is back and he knows where Amber is. Either Amber helps Gabe get what he wants or her boyfriend, Eli, will pay for her defiance.
***** O-M-G! Linda Joy Singleton gets better and better with every story she pens. Any time I feel as though this author can no longer surprise me, she throws in a twist that bowls me over. I love it! The story clearly showed to me that grown ups do not always know everything. (For example, Grammy Greta may have once been Amber's age, but times have changed and she is overwhelmed with the new things taught in school. Not to mention the class work is done with computers now.)
Since this is the last of the Dead Girl trilogy, much more is going on than the previous two titles. There are things happening in this story that I do not mention in the synopsis too. Twists and surprises spring up everywhere. The story never slows down so I never became bored. The story opens with a bang and hooks attentions instantly. I end this with a warning; do not begin reading this until you have a lot of free time. Outstanding! *****

Rachel is back and more confused than ever. Trying to unlock her memory so she can remember who killed her boyfriend, fighting off a crazed banshee and being shunned by the witch community all lead to a very bad day (or days rather). But Rachel seems to be coping and learning to deal with some of her problems. Throw in lessons with a demon and an old friend who happens to be a ghost and you have a great book by Kim Harrison. These are pretty dark books, and you feel for Rachel and everything she has going on in her life, but you are also left with a feeling that in the end it will be ok. At least I hope so.

above - a doodle from my sketchbook after a few nights of great sleep here (which had been impossible back home!)
Like any good story, my stay here at the Thurber House has many chapters. Each day delights me with something new that I discover here in Columbus - or an event that I participate with as part of my writer-in-residency.
So as I said, the surprises go on and on....(more on that later) but now back to the GHOST.
I knew about the Ghost before my arrival. You see, when I was being interviewed for the residency, I asked Pat Shannon, the Children's Director of Thurber House, if my attic apartment had air conditioning (come on - Ohio in the summer gets hot! - and YES, she assured me that I'd be fully ensconced in a/c!). Then it was her turn for questions, namely "How do you feel about ghosts?"
Of course I'd heard all about the ghost that is supposed to live here. James Thurber himself wrote about the ghost in "My Life and Hard Times" with the hilarious chapter "The Night The Ghost Got In".
So immediately I told Pat - that I was excited about meeting the ghost and didn't tell her the part of me that was saying, "But it kind of freaks me out!"
In preparing for my visit I was also told about a ghostly encounter by last year's Children's Author in Residence, Lisa Yee. She and I laughed about it. No big deal.
Still as cool/weird/possibly scary as it sounded - I was slightly unnerved at being all alone in a big house with a spirit who had no name. I'm bad enough at parties with people I don't know - I wasn't sure I could handle being in a house with a ghost who was a stranger to me.
So when I had what I am describing as my "ghost encounter" I had to laugh - because obviously, this was a ghost who wanted me here. Who wanted me to know he/she/it was not there to "haunt" me. This ghost wanted me to laugh - and to know that a sense of humor was the aura that surrounded it!
How do I know this?
Once I arrived here two weeks ago - I set up my stuff to make me feel at home - including the GHOSTBUSTER kit my son and wife made me for my birthday this year - as preparation for coming to the Thurber House.
The kit includes:
1) a home-made Electro-Magnetic "YES/NO" ghost detection device
2) a "spy-kit" motion detector
3) one xtremely strong flashlight
4) a large photo of the Thurber house, where the two attic windows (where I live here) open to reveal a picture of me and a POP-OUT picture of the "ghost"
Now you need to know that the little attic "windows" that open up - have to be pried open with fingers to see what's behind them, much like an advent calendar.
So imagine my surprise when on Morning 3 of my stay - I discovered one window was wide open ....and which window was it?
YES! The GHOST window had somehow popped open and the ghost that my son had made to spring out was STICKING OUT OF THE PICTURE! First reaction? I'm packing up and moving into a hotel!....But then it hit me: the ghost was welcoming me to the house. The ghost was telling me he/she/it was funny. The ghost liked the present my family made. (Now if only the ghost would make me breakfast - I'd be pretty darn happy!)
So thank you Ghost for letting me know you're hip to my style. If you want to have drinks - I'm an iced coffee kind of guy!
editors note: while writing this I ran down to the car to get something and when I came back up - one of the doors to my apartment - one that I have NEVER closed in two weeks - was closed!

I love ghost stories. And I mean ghost stories, rather than horror stories. If truth be known I am the world’s most squeamish person. I really do hate the sight of blood, which is the only reason why I haven’t seen Sweeney Todd yet. Anyway, enough of my foibles. I have been looking for an excuse for posting an excerpt from our book Mother Leakey and the Bishop: A Ghost Story, by Peter Marshall, for ages, but so far haven’t been able to come up with one. So, today I am posting it for no other reason than I really loved this book of literary detective work, and I hope you will too. Enjoy!

Good Morning All:
I have another one of those busy days ahead. Lots of logistics and driving involved. Neither of which I am looking forward to.
I did manage to list two of my ACEO collage Prints in My Etsy Shop, as I didn't list anything yesterday:
The Guardian
This ACEO is the very first in an on-going series called "The Guardian Series". This is the one that started it all.
Creepy Ghost Boy
I must say that the print above, "Creepy Ghost Boy" really does send chills up and down my spine. I collaged him very simply as I wanted the original look of his image to carry the piece. I did nothing to enhance him or make him creepier. I don't know who he was or what his story was. I just know that this photo gave me a spooky feeling the moment I laid eyes upon it. I don't know why he has such a look on his face nor do I know why he was bald. Needless to say, the original photo stays well put at the bottom of a box of vintage photos. I have not looked at the original photo since putting it away.
I'll leave you to take a gander at these collage prints as I am out the door in one hour.
Hope that you all have a lovely and productive day.
Until Tomorrow:
