1. Endings...

Good Morning Friends:

Today’s post will be my last post here at Garden Painter Art. I will keep this blog up as a reference for myself, and because many people will still look for me here for quite some time.

I have finally taken the plunge and changed my business name. Along with the change comes a new blog, a new Etsy shop and a new world…Gerushia’s New World.

I would like to extend my thanks to all of my devoted readers and friends. You have all helped pull me through some dark hours over the last year. Your emails and “mail box notes” have been so appreciated.

I hope to put the darkness of my mom’s long and ugly illness behind me. My intentions are to open up a new blog filled with color, curiosity and goodness. So, if you would like to enter my new world and hear Gerushia’s story, please accept my invitation to visit my new blog...

Gerushia's New World

Sincerely and With Appreciation

2. NEW BLOG UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Good Afternoon Everyone:

Just a little note to let you know that, soon, my new blog will be up and running. In a few days I will enter one last post here at Garden Painter Art explaining the change, then I will from that point on, be posting on my new blog with my new business name: "Gerushia's New World".

Right now, there's nothing at the new blog other than the banner, but I am in the process of building the blog. The banner art is my newest piece and the first piece I've made in almost 2 years! It feels so good to be back to work.

Have a sneak peek if you like:

http://gerushiasnewworld.blogspot.com

Thanks so much for stopping by. I'll have more in a few days.

3. Thank You Suzanne

Hello There:

I thought I would take a moment to post a "Thank You" to Suzanne of Unique Nurses for doing a fabulous feature on my Vintage Photo Shop on Etsy ~ as well as my Art Shop.

She took quite a bit of time to put these pieces together and I am so humbled to have been chosen as her feature.

I hope you can take a moment to stop by Unique Nurses and have a look.

4. Ghost on the Gravestone

Hello:

Just a quick blog entry today, as I wanted to share this photo with you that I've just listed in My Vintage Photo Shop. The photo fascinates me and spooks me all at once ~

Ooopsie...no longer for sale

I'm not exactly sure what I believe regarding ghosts, but if there's anything that can convince me that they exist, it's this photo. Have a close look to the right of the headstone, just above the M in the name SCHWAM. I'm telling you, there is an image of a tiny woman wearing a white scoop-neck dress sitting on the middle ledge of the headstone. You can't make out a face, but you can see the dress ~

The headstone was for the Schwam family. The husband, Ferdinand, was still alive at the time of the photo. However, his wife, Margaret and his 2 year old daughter, Annie, were both already buried at the time of the photo.

What do you think?

6. Missing In Action

Hello There:

First of all, let me say "thank you" to all of my dear blog friends that have emailed me, concerned with my absence. I haven't had time to blog in the last two weeks, and I am feeling a bit out of the loop. So, I found a wee few moments today to touch bases.

Over the course of the last two weeks, my mom's health has declined considerably. Due to that fact, I am at the "Board and Care" daily. When I'm not there, it seems I am on the phone with a doctor, a nurse, an aide, the pharmacy, the owner of the Board and Care or out of state relatives. I truly feel overwhelmed and out of breath at times...

With my mom's progressing disease and both broken hips, she is failing fast. This last week, we've experienced a massive decline in her mental state. She is confused and sometimes delusional. Although, she always recognizes me and still keeps up with current events. Her sense of logic is gone. She is absolutely positive that each day is her birthday, (which is actually in September). Each day, she waits for her chocolate cake. She has "visitors" from out of town almost everyday, but none of them have physically come to see her. It must be so vivid in her mind. She can tell me word for word what they talked about and she tells me that she gives them tours of the garden. None of which has actually happened.

So....as you can see, I've been quite busy. I miss blogging on a daily basis, but considering the current status of my life, a daily blog would be unpleasant and depressing for the reader.

I will be back as soon as I can.

Until Next Time:

7. AND THE WINNER IS....

Well, after more than a few attempts at trying to get my not so intelligent Mini Schnauzer, Junior, to paw a winner, I was forced to find another way to pick the winning number. Truly, my little dog is sweet in an interesting and pitiful way, but smart he's not.

I'm a day late at announcing the winner, so I opted for the quickest, yet fair way to choose. I simply asked my daughter to pick a number between 1 and 16. She picked number 8.

I will contact the winner today.

Thanks ever so much for playing along. I'll have another give-way shortly.

Okay....the contest give-away is officially over.

To everyone who commented, I want to say "Thank You". I am so happy to see that there are folks out there that would like to win one of my art prints.

I will count up the comments, instruct Junior of his responsibilities as Master Of Ceremonies, and have a winner posted tomorrow afternoon.

Again, thanks ever so much for stopping by and leaving a comment.

9. GIVEAWAY

Good Morning:

I hope this entry finds you all well and ready for a lovely weekend.

This morning is the beginning of another weekend contest, ending on Monday, May 4 at 5:00 p.m. pst. All you need to do is post a comment. Then, I will count the amount of comments, write the numbers down on little pieces of paper, and drop them on the floor. The piece of paper that Junior (my not so intelligent Miniature Schnauzer) touches with his paw first will be the winning number.

The winner will receive this:

It is a print of my original watercolor/collage entitled "Ghostly Gert's Tucson Patio Party". The image size measures 4" x 6" and there is a small white border about the image. This particular piece is one of my "story collages". It is a ghost story that goes like this:

"Here we have poor little Ghostly Gert, revisiting the most exciting yet tragic day of her life. Oh the happenings on that lovely desert patio. It was August 13, 1910, a sweltering hot day in Tucson, Arizona. It was Gert's 11th birthday and she was having a big party. Hundreds of friends and family members were swarming in. The food was delicious and the cake, oh the cake. It was 4 layers high. It was such an extravagent party. Everyone was laughing and dancing. Gert and the other children were playing games. Hopscotch, Tag, Croquet. Then, before it could be stopped, tragedy struck..."

Now, you get to fill in the blank. The end of the story belongs to you.

Enjoy:

10. The Tale of the Girl Who Loved to Garden: Part 4

Many of the gardening duties required a mightier strength than the girl who loved to garden possessed. She soon found that much of the work could only be done when her Honey was home. There were many other delightful things around her house that needed to be done. But alas ~ since the "Great Depression of 2008", she struggled to find delight in anything. However, she was learning that, in order to get things done, she truly had to force herself.

She busied herself by browsing through some of her very favorite gardening books...

She experimented with new paper for her art prints...

She toyed with the idea of FINALLY taking down her Easter decorations...

She even put on her trusty purple splashers...

and had a walk about her backyard. She thought it about time to have a gander at her little plum tree...

She found that, even without her daily acknowledgement, her little tree was capable of setting fruit...

The girl who loved to garden was ever so pleased to see that her Sweet Pea seedlings were coming right along...

and the few that were naturalized were in full bloom...

While walking about, the girl who loved to garden saw something white peeking out from under the tumble of overgrowth that was once her garden. Oh my, it was a lovely Calla Lily bloom, hidden just so...

What a glorious swirl of white ~ so much like cake icing! The girl remembered that, once upon a time, Calla Lilies were her most cherished flowers. When she married her Honey, she very much wanted to carry a bouquet of Callas, but unfortunately, they were out of season.

(Ooopsie, I think I went off topic for a moment with the girl's wedding).

So, where was I? Oh yes...the lovely white Calla bloom.

After a nice browse in the yard, the girl who loved to garden felt so much lighter ~ maybe even a bit giddy.

Could it be? Is it possible? Just maybe, the girl who loved to garden was finding that, even if by force, discovering the little pieces of heaven in her everyday life was a tonic for her broken heart.

11. The Tale of the Girl Who Loved to Garden: Part 3

Although planting the tiny brown Sweet Pea seeds was a simple task, the girl who loved to garden found it to be less than heartwarming. In all the years previous, she very much looked forward to this particular yearly tradition. She was saddened by her loss of enthusiasm. But....to her surprise, after planting the seedlings, she felt a tick of that old anticipation while waiting for the peek-a-boo seedlings to pop through the warm soil...

With a feeling of accomplishment and a guarded sense of excitement, the girl who loved to garden felt ready to tackle her main garden plot. The laborious task of cutting back and cleaning up this abandoned and cheerless piece of nature was frightening to say the least. It had become terribly overgrown...

and a home to all sorts of "snips of snails"

"and 'possum tails"...

So ~ with her mighty shovel in hand, the girl who loved to garden began to dig...

She found an array of forgotten friends concealed beneath the hodge podge of webs, dried leaves and creepy crawlies...

She wondered if her garden friends had thought she had abandoned them for the rest of time. Truth be known, the girl who loved to garden had thought just that very thing.

So ~ all day long in the scorching, dry desert heat, the girl shoveled and cut and pulled. Sneezing all the while in the dust and mold that had taken over. This snarl of webby, chaotic growth looked impossible to tame. Was anything salvageable?

But Look! Way in the back under the moldy and sunless overgrowth...one lone plant...

A hint of the future...blossoms of hope.

12. The Tale of the Girl Who Loved to Garden: Part 2

So....with a basket full of prayers and an awful lot of contemplation, the girl who loved to garden timidly gathered her basic gardening tools...

With ever so much sweat and labor ahead of her, she decided to start small. Sweet Peas would be in order...

As the girl who loved to garden had been indoors for over a year now, she discovered even the simple act of planting a small brown seed could be trying...breath-stealing even. She so wanted to adore her reacquaintance with the soil and shovel ~ why was she struggling so?

13. The Tale of The Girl Who Loved To Garden.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl. She loved all things natural and colorful and sweet smelling. Knowing this, it was no surprise that she would be called to a garden. Oh how she adored Springtime and digging and the twittering of birds. Each and every year, she faithfully counted down the days of winter in anticipation for the green and hopeful growth of a new Spring. She grew Sweet-Peas for bouquets and Rosemary and Basil for cooking. She used her time in the garden to relax, to pray, to think, and to make up little stories about the tiny creatures that lived inside the mouths of Snapdragons.

So, with each passing year, the girl's garden became bigger and more colorful and sweet smelling. Until....her "Great Depression of 2008" hit. As the Spring of that year inched closer and closer, there were no plans made for her garden. No Sweet-Pea seeds were planted for bouquets, no Rosemary or Basil for her kitchen. On occasion, she would look longingly out the window, wishing and praying that she may find the heart and the path back to her garden, but all she heard was blackness. As though she were dead. As she withdrew and lost her own tangle of color, so did her garden. What was once a secret path dancing with an intense blush of tangled "cottage garden" colors....

Is now a disheartened and overgrown mess.....

Where a vibrant blue gate once welcomed visitors....

Now stands a rickety puzzle of wood in desperate need of fresh paint.....

After more than a year of the "Great Depression of 2008", the girl who loved to garden forced herself to have a browse through her lonely bonelike garden. She followed the well-worn path and felt ever so sad. How did this happen? How will she ever find the strength and the heart to nurture this garden back to it's former confetti self? Oh the work that would be involved....the cutting, the digging, the nurturing. She desperately wanted to be the "girl that loves to garden" again.

As she continued her walk, she looked closely at what appeared to be an ugly mess. But...she found little signs of life ~

Resilient pieces of color that held tight even when she was falling apart ~

Her old friend Mr. Frog had stood guard in the girl's garden day and night before the "Great Depression of 2008" hit ~

Even when the girl no longer protected or nurtured her garden, Mr. Frog stood strong and continued his guard ~

The girl who loved to garden began to wonder: "Hmmm, if my "Great Depression of 2008" has caused so much damage and loss of color to my garden, maybe this is what I look like to my family, to my husband. Am I now a colorless and tangled mess? Am I nothing more than a bonelike ghost of who I once was?"

So, the girl who loved to garden has decided to try with all her heart and all her strength to dig, to cut and to fertilize her garden and herself back to their former confetti selves.

This is the beginning of the story for the girl who loves to garden. Oh how she clings to the hope that the story will have a happy ending...

14. DAY OLD EGGS

Hello There:

Today is the beginning of a new week and the end of the Easter week. A perfect time to share a few photos of my family's Easter eggs. Each year, we like to try a new application for decorating eggs. This year we came up with the clever idea to use bubble wrap as part of our decorating process. The results were fabulous.....

Throughout the years, we have learned to use rubberbands, painters tape, scotch tape, paper towels and lots of other household items. This mosaic egg was created by cutting lots of triangular shapes from blue painter's tape and applying them to the egg before dying....

This "mummy" egg was created by weaving tape over and under itself....

There hasn't been a single year since my first son was born that we haven't decorated eggs. As a child, my mom and I would decorate eggs using the pre-packaged egg decorating kits, but Gary and I found that we had better results mixing our own colors using food dye.

The kids are all too old for hiding and finding the eggs, but we still have fun decorating. I suppose that when my husband and I become "empty nesters" we'll still take a couple of hours on the Saturday night before Easter to decorate eggs, just the two of us.

15. BUY ONE GET ONE FREE

Good Morning:

As I have been ever so busy painting the room that will become my "studio", I haven't had a spare moment to hop over to my blog. Alas ~ I am finished with the painting and will steal this day to relax and do nothing or anything I choose to do.

I had intended to do a bit of work in the garden, but there's a chill in the wind that urges me to stay indoors. Maybe I'll try a new recipe or list a few more prints in my art shop.

Either way, I have a lovely day ahead of me with no actual plans. I am almost giddy, as those types of days are far and few between.

________________________________

I am having a "Buy One Get One Free" sale in my Etsy Art Shop.

Buy one ACEO print and get another ACEO print of your choice for free. I think purchasing ACEOs are a great way to get to know an artist. They are small (2-1/2" x 3-1/2") and affordable. For those of you who may not know about ACEOs: ACEO is an acronym for "Art Cards, Editions and Originals". They are miniature pieces of art. They must measure 2-1/2" x 3-1/2", which is the size of a standard trading card. They can be any medium, but they must be the correct size to be considered an ACEO. All of my ACEO prints are $6.00 each. I have so many to choose from and lots more to list as time allows. Over the course of the last several years, I have made 209 ACEOs. Here are a few examples:

Amelia's Day in the Sun

Guardian of the Asian Tourists

The Guardian's Home

The Arizona Sunbathers

Two Tickets to Tucson

and....these last two are quite special to me. The happy desert couple that you see depicted are my mom and dad right after they got married. They left Northwest Arkansas to come to the desert of Southern California.

Happy Desert Couple #1

Happy Desert Couple #2

All of these prints along with many more can be found here.

As always, thanks so much for taking the time to visit my blog.

16. HODGE PODGE OF MEMORIES

Although I grew up in a small city outside of Los Angeles, my entire childhood was filled with everything country and mostly Southern in nature. You see, both of my parents were born in the Ozarks and raised during the Great Depression. They, like so many other young couples of that era, came to California looking for the gold at the end of the rainbow, or at least, a fair paying job. They settled in a post war cookie cutter neighborhood and lived a simple life.

All throughout my young years, I loathed everything about their simpleness. I despised that I had accidentally "inherited" their southern accents and slang words. I was ridiculed relentlessly for the twang in my spoken words. I tried with all my might to dis-own my heritage.

Of course, as time passed and I became an adult with children of my own, I began to see their simpleness as a blessing that was graciously passed on to me. A simple blessing that I am, hopefully, passing on to my own children.

Because of my mom's basic upbringing, she was taught to keep herself busy. Along with her daily doings she made time to can homemade jams and jellies, tend a lovely garden, sew many of my clothes (and my Barbie's clothes) and quilt.

Quilting, I suppose, was her way of relaxing. But...at the same time, she was creating something with a practical use. Of course, when she was a girl, quilting was necessary, as there was no extra money to purchase store bought bedding. By the time I was born, my mom could easily have gone to the local J.C. Penney's and purchased bedding, but she chose instead to invest her time and heart and talent into her craft.

My mom hand-quilted using her mom's old wooden hoops. They looked very much like gigantic embroidery hoops. I remember so clearly the sound of the stitches, and the click of the needle on her metal thimble. Ohhh...and every once in a while, she would let out a quiet naughty word. We all knew what that meant...it meant that mom pricked herself with the needle! I loved seeing the little blood stains on a freshly made quilt. It somehow stood for the heart that she put into it.

I have most of the quilts here in my home. Some are so very tattered that I keep them stored away and some are still in use. These fabrics that are sewn together make a beautiful yet practical hodge podge of memories. I can still pick out blocks of fabric that came from my "Holly Hobbie" short outfit that I wore in first grade, a floral print from one of my mom's dresses and the plaid fabric my mom used to make my Barbie's coat.

My mom is 81 now. She lived with my family and me up until last October. As she is declining with an end stage disease, I was forced to arrange for her to stay at a Board and Care. She is weak and ever so trembly now. Truth be said, she'll never quilt again. She started one several years ago, but was not able to finish it.

Her stitches were not the perfectly timed rows that they were in her younger days, but the heart behind the stitches remained...

I have that unfinished quilt now. It is exactly as she left it the last time she put it down...

The needle is in the same position...

It is still in Grandma's hoops...

I am committed to finishing this quilt. I don't know when, but someday...

17. IN CELEBRATION OF THE VERNAL EQUINOX

Good Morning:

Oh it is a lovely and warm day. The twitterpated birds are busy gathering bits of this and pieces of that. All to be woven into ragged yet efficient homes for their upcoming eggs.

I am on the watch for the return of my yearly visitors...The Hooded Orioles.

I have my Oriole feeder ready to hang at the first sight of flickering orange. They will stay with us from early spring through September. The male visits first, establishes the feeder and then brings his "wife". They will build their nests away from the feeding station. Once the eggs have hatched and the babies (usually two) are big enough to take flight, mom and dad will introduce them to the feeder. By the time they take leave in the Autumn, the babies will be teenagers.

Oh how I adore Springtime!

In celebration of the upcoming Vernal Equinox, I am offering free shipping on my three favorite prints from my Art Shop... When purchasing, mention that you read about the sale on my blog and I will add a free ACEO print of your choice.

Here are the three Springtime prints:

Little Bertie in the Garden

Rabbit's Unexpected Party

23. UPDATE ON HOMER AND OTHER LOVELY THINGS

Good Afternoon:

Just thought it would be nice to post an update on Homerella. She's still with us and seems to be coming along a bit. I say this carefully, as I've seen this happen before. She's taking these painfully odorous and very large Glucosamine pills. They do seem to loosen her stiff joints a bit, but they appear to upset her tummy some as well. A trade-off of evils, I suppose...

So, we watch and hope for the best, knowing full well that she's 13 and has had a fabulous life.

While rummaging through one of my boxes of vintage photos over the weekend, I found a small box of my all time treasureful photos. I'd like to share one with you. It fascinates me and spooks me all at once. I think the photo calls to be framed and placed on the wall of my new studio. Isn't it a fabulous old photo? It's dated October of 1899.

The Mirrored Soul

I am going to hold dear to this photo. I simply can't let it go, so I won't be listing this in my Vintage Photo Shop

24. Dear Old Homer

Good Afternoon:

It's been ever so long since I've had a few spare moments to pamper my blog.

You see, one of our dear family members is not doing so well. Although she's only 13 years old, if the wives tale of "dog years" is true, then really, she's 91 years old.

Dear old Homerella. Our loyal, sweet and silly Labrador Retriever is giving out. As so many large breed dog owners know, those old hips and back legs can become weak and painful in the later years.

Homer joined our family when she was 2-1/2 years young. She was so very playful. Her favorite pastime was chasing bees ~

and rolling and lolling about the patio ~

She loved modeling for my art work ~

She was obedient and always ready to sit for a treat ~

Today, she is still all those things in her heart. The difference is, her body won't allow her to chase bees, sit for a treat or roll about the patio. She is quite thin and her hips and back legs are atrophied ~

She has the look of oldness in her eyes ~

I don't know how much longer she'll be with us, so we are lavishing her with even more attention than usual, and smuggling bits of cheese in her food bowl! Her mind and soul are still strong, as is her appetite. But her body is not so strong. I, on the other hand, am becoming quite strong considering I have been lifting her up to move her about.

So, as we enter the weekend, we are stepping easy and hopeful that she'll still be with us this time next week.

We love you girl.

25. A CURIOUS VALENTINE WEEKEND

Hello There:

Another day of luscious rain. Here in the Southern California desert, we take all we can get!

I hope this entry finds that you all had a lovely Valentine's Day weekend. Gary and I had our traditional dinner of chinese food, a bottle of Almond Champagne and lots of dark chocolate and cheesecake! A yummy dinner followed with a movie by the fireplace. And as always, the obligatory red rose ~

The majority of the weekend was spent moving my mom's "stuff" from her storage facility to our trusty 4 car garage. With her stay at the Board and Care, we decided that the $125.00 we were paying for her storage could be used in oh so many, useful ways. So...off to U-Haul to rent a truck, packing up all her belongings and shuffling them all round our garage was how we spent most of the weekend. After the truck was returned, we still managed to have our delightful dinner ~

But of course, as our holidays so often lead to adventure, a romantic dinner, a movie and a long day of moving furniture just wasn't enough. Nope, just not enough. Last night, while nobody was watching, the tank on one our toilets decided to "runneth over". By the time the soggy mess was discovered, the water had managed to find it's way out of the bathroom and into the hall carpeting. Hurry, hurry, run, run, run...outside to turn off the water to the entire house. Fetching over a dozen bath towels to soak up the floor. Then, Gary and my oldest son were off on an adventure to find a part for the tank. All of this just as Gary was almost finished with his school paper. Out the door at 7:15 p.m. They purchased the part and managed to get it all done and cleaned up with one minute to go before the season premiere of "The Amazing Race"! Sheeesh ~ I get a wee bit weary just thinking about it. However, even with the general busy-ness of this Valentine's Day weekend, a good time was had by all.

Oh....and lest I forget ~ one of our PCs became riddled with viruses while we slept. So, download anything saveable and reformat the entire machine.

I hope your weekend went a bit smoother than ours did. But...considering all that I have to be thankful for, virus riddled computers, drenching toilet tanks and shifting large pieces of furniture is all just part of the adventure!

Until Next Time:
