2. You Made My Day Award

I was so excited when Mike R Baker told me that I'd "Made his day" via my blog. This is a great compliment as I frequent his blogs myself. He is a fantastic illustrator and always surprises me with his illustration friday contributions which are often completed in gouache at lightening speed! Mike also designed this wonderful new logo for the award which I find adorable (I couldn't resist passing it on...)

So, here I am passing the award on to five wonderful people who's blogs I check everyday (I'm not kidding, I'm rather addicted). Thank you to:

Dani Draws (this blog is incredible. Dani is talented and has detailed tutorials... so CHECK IT OUT!)
Amanda Woodward (A tremendous source of inspiration both from her life and her art. I consider her a good friend and am lucky to have met her - she's from my home town as well. Actually, to be perfectly honest, Amanda helped inspire me to quit my full time job to illustrate for a living and I've never looked back!)
Chrissy Fanslau (Her perseverance and dedication is ultra inspiring!)
The Daily Coyote (Just check it out, it's awesome!)
CutewithChris.com (um, yeah, Cute with Chris is so darn funny)

5. Bearuh

Hey, gang! I've been shaking off this illness for over a month now. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. But today I actually feel good! Yay, health! :)

I want to do several portraits of Monday Artday folk here (I know the contest is over), so look for them soon! This here is one I did some months ago of Bearuh. She seems to be blonde now though, huh? Maybe I'll do another.

8. Grow

This was my entry for Illustration Friday's 'grow' theme. I was going to skip that week but I'm a illo-holic. So I thought about growing and when there might be be a time someone wanted to grow and thought of this. I drew a quick little girl and sign in pencil, inked it, and scanned it. That took 10 minutes. Then I created layers in PhotoShop, selected the background of the illo and inverted the selection. I copied it and made it the top layer and then painted it. Then I searched for a photo of a roller coaster and a photo of paper texture. I added the paper texture to the background and shaded it. Then I cropped the roller coaster photo to where I wanted it and layed it over the paper texture, changing the size to where I liked it. I changed the coaster layer to "multiply" and the opacity to 60% which gave it that nice aged feel. All that took about a half an hour, making the total time spent on the illo 40 minutes.

9. Open Gallery Show

The Illustration Friday Show at Open

Illustration Friday and Open Book Store are showcasing twenty-five IF-community-chosen artists at the first ever Illustration Friday gallery show!

The show begins November 3rd and runs through January 20th.

Open is located at 2226 E. 4th St. in Long Beach, CA.

The IF community created 678 total entries out of which 25 were chosen by IF artists to be in the show.

This is my "open" illustration that will be in the show, thanks to the votes of people like you! Thank you, my friends! I will post photos of the opening.

12. Paper Mike

It's me! And you can download me and have me for your very own! Cuddle it, pose it in embarrassing positions, stick pins in it... it's all yours!

I took a blank template from the site Bearuh provided and modified it. I'm quite happy with the ears-and-glasses addition. :)

17. Merry Birthday Tea Party

My daughter, Jasmine, turns 7 next week. We're having a fancy tea party with 7 of her closest girl friends. Tea, little cakes and sandwiches, parlor games, croquet, play jewelry, balloons, etc. We'll be decorating hats with ribbon, flowers and feathers. Each girl will get a wrist corsage. One of Jasmine's favorite books is Fancy Nancy so we're going to be EXTRA fancy. This is a drawing I did for the invitations, featuring Jasmine. They came out great and she's SOOOO excited!

21. Mystical Love

I sat on the couch after midnight, my wife and little girl asleep in their beds, I in the dark, silence. My thoughts attacked each other, never coming together, never making sense, keeping me from sleeping. Life was slipping by and I wondered how much time I would have to be a good husband, a good father, and true to myself. I wondered if I was worth the life I lived, if I was worth anything. But the wondering was garbled in a mind fevered with demons. I was alone. I was utterly alone. Then I saw light coming from my bedroom where my wife slept. I walked to the door and peered in - no light, just the gentle breathing of my sleeping wife. I left, bewildered, and saw the same light, this time from my daughter's room. I found her sleeping peacefully as well, no light but the small nightlight that keeps her company. I turned from her room and returned to the living room and suddenly fell to my knees, grasping my chest in pain. Am I having a heart attack? It burned, like fire. I tore my shirt, then I tore my chest, pulling back the flesh -- and then the light came out. The same light. It flooded the room making everything in it sharp, bright, crystal clear. It was so bright I should have been blinded, but instead, I saw better than I ever have. I gasped, fell to my hands, the light was gone. I breathed as though I'd run a mile. In the dark, on the floor. My chest was whole, my shirt untorn. When I caught my breath it was quiet again. All I could hear was the gentle breathing of my wife and daughter, asleep in their beds.

24. Warriors

warrior
cap
cowgirl
kali
me with mermaids

What is a warrior? A photograph comes to mind, something I saw some time ago, of a woman with her shirt off exposing a double-mastectomy, her fist raised in victory but a life-loving smile on her face. I'm not sure if it was titled "warrior" but it was just that in my mind.

Here's a few pieces from the archives - the first is a watercolor, the rest are PhotoShop. The first one is titled "Warrior", the next is Captain America, then a cowgirl, Kali, and finally me and some pissed-off mermaids.

I'll be doing an illo specifically for Monday Artday that I will post tomorrow.

25. Join us...

"Hurry back! Hurry back! Be sure to bring your death certificate, if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now! We've been dying to have you!" Thus moans Little Leota at the very end of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion ride, after you've left the "hitchhiking ghosts" and are on the moving walkway. She's tiny and for some reason some people feel they must throw pennies at her. Poor little thing. She's named after Leota Toombs, an imagineer at Disneyland that acted for Madam Leota (the head in the crystal ball) and Little Leota - Madam Leota's voice is another actress but Little Leota's voice is Leota Toombs.
