4. Asteroids DO Crash!

We do a lot of talking about asteroids in our house... Having an almost eight year old who is extremely scientifically minded helps quite a bit. One night my daughter, two, and I had a conversation about dinosaurs. It went something like this:

"Mommy, where did all the dinosaurs go?"

"Well, some say it was a giant asteroid crashing into earth, others think it was a giant volcano...etc.. then.."

Quiet for a minute...

"Mommy,"

"Yes?"

"I think it was aliens. They landed in the ocean and caused these volcanoes. Then the dinosaurs went away. I think they went to the beach though, or maybe the forest."

The next day, at dinner, she insists she cannot sit still, because SHE is an asteroid.

Did you know that asteroids do not eat asparagus?
(And of course, I am now creating something out of this!)

5.

Here's a spread from DinoTracks, my fourth illustrated book with Sylvan Dell Publishing. These are polar dinosaurs, Timimus Hermani who lived at the icy south pole. OK, the santa hat was added later - that's my artistic license showing.
I've been telling folks that DinoTracks comes out next year, but now have to remember to say this fall. Happy 2013!

10. Dinosaurs and DinoTracks!

I was excited when I heard that November's theme is "Dinosaurs" because I'm in the midst of drawing exactly that. Actually the book is about dinosaur tracks and the science of studying the tracks. The tracks provide clues to the movement, behavior, what they ate, lots of information about dinosaurs come from their footprints. Hopefully I'll be posting more dinos as the month goes along.

Happy November everybody!

11. Gearing Up for Book 3

As the June 1st release of The Secret Queen draws near, interest in The Empyrical Tales series is growing.

Here is a brand new review of Book I: The Fourth Queen from The Reader's Roundtable.

Jaymes said, "Mark Miller has added his own unique spin on the fairytales..." and "The Fourth Queen is a really good beginning to a captivating series."

Please click here to read the full review: http://youngandtherestless.thereadersroundtable.com/?p=381

If you haven't traveled to the land of Empyrean yet, Comfort Publishing recently released both titles for Kindle. You can get The Fourth Queen HERE (http://goo.gl/ObwtL) and Book II: The Lost Queen HERE (http://goo.gl/yYzSq).

Over the next thirty days or so, I will begin introducing some of the new characters from The Secret Queen. Many of them were inspired by Egyptian mythology and dinosaurs. I look forward to sharing this next adventure with you.

12. IF: Ferocious / Happy Friday!

A FEROCIOUS DINOSNAIL APPEARS...

...TO WISH YOU A HAPPY FRIDAY.

I can't decide if it's the abundance of texture, or the fact that I'm steadily using more gradients in every piece, but my work looks like it's slowly transforming WITHOUT PERMISSION TO DO SO. My 'Advice to Sink in Slowly' poster looked similar- a lot busier & with more subtleties than when I worked in only flats. I didn't choose to stop working in flats, it started as an experiment which is, I suppose, just running a bit unchecked. I don't mind I think. I miss the looser linear elements I used to add, so I'll try to reincorporate them into things. We'll see where this crazy ride takes us!

'Till then, have a happy Friday! :)

14. Start to Finish - DINOSAURS!

I scan in the drawing, and then lighten it up and give it a tint in photoshop. I then print it out on watercolour paper, first to work out the colours, and then to paint. For some reason I cannot retain the info needed to set up the printer the correct way to print out right the FIRST time, so I end up with duplicates, which is VERY handy when you have a 5-year old who wants to paint too!
I layer on the paint - using Gouache, and then use ink to finish it. Here is the final art!

15. prehistoric

T’was true then and remains true to this day.

The Illustration Friday theme for this week is “prehistoric”, so remembering an old post that would work quite well, I dug it up, dusted it off and made a few tweaks to spiff it up a bit.

… and speaking of the holidays, I just wanted to invite y’all over to The Doodle Diner on the 13th. We’ll be dishing up our own version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Each day we’ll have a new illustration of an old classic.

Come join the fun.

20. Chirp’s Dinosaur Play Scene

Happy Tuesday, people. After an invigorating (albeit cold!) morning walk outdoors and a strong cup of coffee, I’m energized and ready to tackle the day. So I begin with posting a piece I worked on back in November  for the Jan/Feb 2010 issue of Chirp! magazine (Owlkids).  I worked these up on my laptop and [...]

22. Word Play #2

T-Rex

In our intense efforts to solve the Dinosaurs vs. Princesses debate, we are leaving no stone unturned as we gather our facts.   Matt just reported back with a field report based on some intense and prolonged observance of Dinosaurs in thier natural habitat.  His 253 page report will be published as soon as it is peer-reviewed.   Until then, his journal entry for 9-15-09 his been adapted into yet another Word Play entitled “Little Dinosaur’s First Day of School“.

I bugged Krista while she was on the phone for the required nouns and verbs, so you can be sure that they were completly off the cuff.   Lets see how it turned out!

There once was a Dinosaur named George, who was so jealous when he thought about his first day of school that he faked having a dog so that he wouldn’t have to jump.  When that didn’t work, he hid in the cat, but his momma found him between his baby and the pretty phone.

“Why don’t you want to go to school?”  George’s mother asked.  “You’ll learn all about shirts and   ordering. It will be good for you!”

“I’m guilty!”  George trembled.  “What if all the other kids pick on me?!”

George’s mother dreamed knowingly and raised her dino eyebrow, “I promise they won’t.”

“How do you know?”  George asked while trying to pray and escape.

“I just do,” said his mother angrily.  George finally smacked, and he went to School with an expensive look on his sword

All of his stalling made him late, so there was no one in the hallways as he fell blankly to his classroom.   He took a deep engine, and he bravely opened the door to his classroom.

“AAAAAAAAGHHHHHHH!!!” the classroom painted, “A dinosaur!!!!!”

George realized that he didn’t need to be afraid of the guitars, they were afraid of HIM!  His momma must have known all along!

It’s your turn to play along.  Check out the Word Play section on our FUN STUFF page!

23. How To Train With a T. Rex and Win 8 Gold Medals Giveaway!

Well, hello there, SFG'ers! Been a long time, hasn't it? Jeff, thanks for keeping this up and running. What a great inspiration for all artists.

How To Train With a T. Rex and Win 8 Gold Medals

Well, thought I'd stop by SFG to let you all know that I've illustrated my very first children's book, How To Train With a T. Rex And Win 8 Gold Medals, written by Michael Phelps with Alan Abrahamson. Yes, THAT Michael Phelps. Hey, check out some of the insides of the book HERE.

FYI: No, I didn't meet him. Yes, I've heard all the jokes. No, this is not an attempt to make parents forget about the photo -- the book was done a month before the photo was released. Just had to get all that out!

Okay! There ya go!

24. Illustration Friday: “Craving”

Who doesn’t crave chocolate? Well, okay. I have met ONE person who had NO desire for it, but for the remainder of the earth’s population, I think it’s a universal craving. So unfortunately I don’t have time to create something new for this week, so I pulled out and modified this illustration from a cartoon spread [...]
