1. And miles to go before I SLEEP

Sea Otter - She hunts for food for both of them and never will give up.
Chimpanzee - At evening she will place it in a "sleeping" nest.
Here's two more sleeping animal spreads for November's theme, SLEEP. I feel like a lot of us Americans will need a long nap after this election season. Thanks for taking a look and please check out my Studio With A View Blog for more images from Baby on Board and other books.

2. Sleeping Baby on Board

Baby on Board
November's theme is SLEEP. There's nothing like a sleeping baby or getting illustrations turned in for an upcoming book. This is from Baby on Board, by Marianne Berkes, published by Dawn Publications and illustrated by me, Cathy Morrison. Now it's time to get a little sleep.

There's more images from this book, including free downloadable activity sheets at my Studio With A View Blog.

Happy November!

4. Happy Winter!

This Land Is Your Land by Catherine Ciocchi, published by Arbordale Publishing, and illustrated by me, Cathy Morrison
December's theme is WINTER! So here's a wintery scene from This Land Is Your Land which came out early 2015. The author is Catherine Ciocchi and the book is about exploring the Earth with land forms.

A hill slopes up above the ground.
The rounded top looks like a mound.
Rolling hills are what you see
when they are in a group of three.

Happy Winter and thanks for taking a look! There's more work on my Studio With A View Blog.

6. Book Launch: Tortoise and Hare’s Amazing Race

TortoiseHareMarianne Berkes and Cathy Morrison are not newcomers to children’s books, Tortoise and Hare’s Amazing Race is their third book together at Arbordale and individually each of these ladies has an impressive collection of stories and book awards. We are happy to release this adaptation of the classic fable and bring a bit of math into the race!

To learn more about the inspiration behind Marianne’s writing here is a sample of her interview:

CathyMorrisonWhat drew you to writing, children’s books ?

As a child our home was filled with books and music. I wrote plays that my friends and I performed in the summer, in our backyard. My dad even helped us build some of the scenery. Reading, writing, music and theater have been a constant in my life. In high school I did interviews for the school paper, and in college wrote my first picture book for a children’s lit class. But it was many years later, after I moved to Florida, that I said “I can do this!” Reading so many books to children at the library where I worked, I kept coming up with ideas of my own. Because I love kids and love “words” I started submitting my stories to publishers, and one day…

What do you hope children get out of your stories?

An appreciation of our earth and respect for nature. I spent a lot of time outdoors as a child and still do. Discovering nature is a life-long adventure that I hope kids today still appreciate. Nature has so many stories to tell and is available to anybody, any place, any time. I hope kids will be entertained by my books, but also that they will want to learn more about the topic. My first book, published in 2000, was about frogs making music in the night. Hopefully after reading this book, kids will go outside in the early evening, especially after a rain, and listen for the sounds I’ve written about. I’ve followed with stories about birds, shells, creatures living in an ocean reef, rainforest animals, Arctic animals, animals that migrate, Australian animals, forest animals (like Polly Possum) and river animals. In Arbordale’s The Tree that Bear Climbed kids also learn how a tree grows, and Daisylocks is about plant life. I’ve also written a book about the planets that I hope kids enjoy. How can we ask them to save the earth, if they don’t learn to appreciate it first? My books are lyrical in verse, making it easy and fun for kids to read with lots of fact blended in. I want kids to really get inside my books, to read them more than once, each time finding something new and exciting!

7. Fort Collins Magazine, Celebrating Life in Northern Colorado

Fort Collins is a great place to live and we're fortunate to have Fort Collins Magazine supporting and celebrating local artists.

Fort Collins Magazine, Fall 2015
Below is an interview with Rachael Coon about being a children's book illustrator.
Natural Wonder, News and Notes
Here's a photo of my grandson, Konnor and Crowley, our big brown dog who pop up here and there in illustrated form in several of my picture books. Konnor posed for If You Love Honey, Nature's Connections. They're both in The Prairie That Nature Built.
Konnor and Crowley
And I have to give a shout out to Laura Pritchett in the same fall edition. I met Laura at a holiday party last year and just finished her book, Stars Go Blue. I can't wait to pick up her latest book, Red Lightning.
5 Minutes with Laura Pritchett

Thanks so much to Cara McDonald, the editor of Fort Collins Magazine and Rachael Coon who did a great job with the interview.

8. August's word-of-the-month is Picnic!

If You Love Honey by Martha Sullivan, illustrated by Cathy Morrison
August's word-of-the-month is "Picnic" and I just happened to have an image that relates. This book comes out in a couple of weeks and while I wouldn't say it was a picnic to illustrate it, I can say I totally enjoyed researching and illustrating it. The publisher is Dawn Publications!

Here's an early and very nice review by Sue Poduska with 2nd Grade Reading Blog.

Please check out my Studio With A View Blog for more information about this book and others.

Thanks for taking a look!

13. Home is where the heart is...

Houses don't come in one shape or size. The mole lives underground, the seal lives in the ocean and the  deer and fox live in the meadow.

These are illustrations from Pitter and Patter written by Martha Sullivan, published by Dawn Publishing and illustrated by me, Cathy Morrison. It's one of their new spring releases.

Welcome Home and Happy Spring!

14. Buzzing about Valentines

"If You Love Honey, Nature's Connections" written by Martha Sullivan and illustrated by Cathy Morrison
OK, let me explain… This month's theme is Valentine and this image has nothing to do with Valentine. But this is an illustration for If You Love Honey, Nature's Connections. So I'm connecting Valentine with Love and that's why I'm posting this image.

And I just posted new images from this book on my own blog if you'd like to see more.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

18. Boat is waaaaay over there, keep looking....

Pitter and Patter
Every month I look forward to June's inspirational word-of-the-month. July's word is BOAT. I don't really have an illustration of a boat that I care to post so you'll have to use your imagination a little. Imagine that there's a boat on the river but it's out of the frame, so you can't see it from here. And while you're imagining what sort of boat it is, why it's there, who's on the boat, please take a look at the dragonfly, otter and trout.

The Prairie That Nature Built
Here's more images for May's flower theme. I love purple flowers and they are popping up everywhere in northern Colorado. Last week almost three feet of snow, this week lots and lots of beautiful spring flowers.

Below are a couple of cropped images from The Prairie That Nature Built. I want to highlight the flowers in nature!

22. The Prairie That Nature Built

This is the rain that splatters the ground,
And quenches the fire
that blazed all around.
This is a spread from The Prairie That Nature Built, written by Marybeth Lorbiecki, illustrated by me, Cathy Morrison, and published by Dawn Publishing. It comes out September 1, 2014.

A wild prairie is a lively place in this rhythmic romp with munchers and crunchers above and below the grasses so thick, and fires that flare, and rains that quench and always the prairie grows green. Back matter offers information and activities for a fuller appreciation of this marvelous, disappearing habitat.

Calling all CATS for February. These cats were line art for chapter headings for "Cat Calls" by Jeanne Adlon and Susan Logan, published by Square One Publishing. It was a very fun project to work on. Cats get a bad rap for being aloof, they have amazing personalities.
