1. MATT CHATS: Kelly Williams on the Grind of the Indy Artist

image1Welcome to MATT CHATS, a weekly interview series that goes live every Tuesday conducted between myself and a creator and/or player in the comic book industry, diving into subjects not broached by other comic news outlets. One of the artists most deserving of work from the Big Two or even the “Big Five” is, in my opinion, […]

and, i've been under the weather (hence my lack of blogging). with that being said, let's play catch up, shall we? ;)

ok...first things first. with some commissions going on, there is still beautiful little lily who i have been working on for what seems like forever (no complaints though because i have fallen in love with her) and i am happy to say...she is just about DONE! another day or two and she'll be ready to be scanned and ready to SELL! :) here'a peek at the lovely flowers that gave her her name....

next up, we have some thumbnails of a couple of commissions i am currently in the process of taking on. one being a very personal and sweet portrait of an adopted mom and her daughter (and ex student of mine, actually) and her birth mother. looking forward to this one as it is chinese and we all know how much i LOVE asian art...from kokeshis to the anime influence. love it all.

4. Little Star Montessori School -- A "Peace Table" for Auction!

For those that might be curious, here's a quick photo of what we'll call the "Peace Table" for Little Star Montessori School's upcoming Puttin' on the Ritz auction.

10 years ago, my wife Sarah and daughter Keeley painted this little IKEA table -- at just about the time that Keeley was starting Little Star. While still retaining the original artsy base-coat of yellow and blue, plus a few character-lending pencil smudges from Keeley's own art projects, the table top has been freshly updated with a couple of friendly wolverines and a snappy splash of red.

So, slide those "GRRR!"chairs right on up to the "Peace Table" and work it out. Friends for life! For your reading pleasure, the table will come with a complimentary copy of Welcome to Harts Pass - a comic collection featuring even MORE wolverines and tons of local insight to boot. Both the book and the table are signed by the artist!

PS I always thought it was really cool that Little Star actually HAS/HAD a Peace Table of its very own. If you've got kids, surely you need one of these at home.

PPS And it would work perfectly well for adults too. After all, who can stay mad/grumpy/hold a grudge or whatever when you're sitting in a kid-sized chair with bright primary colors and two clearly happy wolverines smiling right back at 'ya. GRRR!

5. Caring for Heron’s Dream

Yesterday was a beautiful fall day; perfect for a touch-up on Heron’s Dream. This kinetic sculpture, a collaboration between The Acton-Boxborough Cultural Council, the town of Acton’s NARA Park, Carolyn Wirth, and myself, was installed after the pond froze last winter. The grant process, town approvals and contract negotiations meant that I could not fabricate […]

6. Freelancing at work!

If you follow this blog or are familiar with my work in any way, then you know that I pretty much specialize in children's book illustration, comic strips, and the teaching/schools visits that come about in connection to those pursuits.

Occasionally, my skills are safely tested in the realms of library promotion and summer reading materials -- but in the last year I've had several opportunities to stretch the ole' illustration and design hat a bit.

For starters, a few logo designs:

And then a stroller design commission from the good folks at SmarteCarte (AKA the rentable luggage carts that you find in airports):

And then finally, with the official publication(s) of Training for New Alpinism (March 18th), and Simple Fly Fishing (March 15th) -- both by Pategonia Books -- I can now add a more "technical" line art (for lack of a better description) to my quiver of illustration styles:

My contributions in each instance were relatively small, but both books turned out really great under the respective design direction of Faceout Studio and Monkey C Media.

In any instance, be it children's illustration, logo design, or technical drawings, the collaborative nature of the effort is essential to the best possible end result. Thanks to all of the above for giving me the opportunity to stretch and grow in the collaborative process and cheers to all in the year ahead!

8. Harts Pass prints for sale!

Just in time for the holidays, I'm now selling hand-colored prints of the Harts Pass comic strip! I'll be hawking my wares at two local Christmas bazaars (Nov. 19th and Dec. 10th), but I'm also happy to ship them (near or far) for the additional and appropriate fees.

These unique, archival quality reproductions, are printed on 140 lb watercolor paper and packaged in clear acrylic bags. They sell for $20 a piece.

At this point, I have selected about 10 different images for reproduction on a larger scale and I will post the "catalog" soon. However, if you have a personal favorite over the last 71 (and counting) issues please just let me know and I'll be happy to create a special print.

Look for Harts Pass each and every Wednesday in the Methow Valley News, or read it online at the Harts Pass Comics blog.

GRRR!

9. Ebay and a new blog

I put the plums up for auction on ebay. Thank you to those of you who expressed an interest! I appreciate the encouragement, truly.

I started a new blog just for these small pieces which I will offer for sale.
Paula Pertile's Pencil. How's that for a catchy title?

Its been a while since I've "done" ebay, so the listing is pretty bare bones. I plan to do a "me" page and all that at some point. I'm not sure how often I'll be putting pieces up for auction, we'll see how it goes. I'd love to do a few a week, but the reality is that with other commissioned work, these will get done when I can fit them in. There will probably be flurries, then dry spells. If you'd like to subscribe on the other blog you can get updates when new art is available.

(P.S. I also hope that the ebay listing doesn't show the 'seller view' with all the editing options for you, like it does when I view it ~ I'm rusty at this, and can't make it come up for me withOUT all that stuff. So if someone wants to check it and tell me it displays 'normal' for you, I'd sleep better. Thanks.)

I also welcome suggestions for subject matter if anyone is keen on seeing something in particular (like pears, as someone has already suggested!), or if you'd like to specifically commission a piece done in this style.

I'm also taking pet/people/building portrait commissions, and will be doing a post about that soon. NOW is the time to start thinking about Christmas presents, and if you think you might like something done, please let me know and I'll put you in the queue. Stay tuned for a post with all the details on pricing and all of that in the near future.

~~~~~
Other stuff:
I get to make this photo into a nice illustration for a client. Them's a lotta bricks! Wish me luck.
