Another colored pencil and oil piece.
5 x 7 on illustration board.

I notice on this one the oil made more of a 'halo' around the image. Not sure why. Its not a bad thing, I'm just saying. The plums didn't do that. I'm still learning this technique and how to control it, so may be in for more surprises along the way. The halo doesn't show here, but you can see it on the original piece, barely.
I'd like to do some other pears. Its not really pear season I guess, because the store didn't really have any nice ones the other day. Boscs are my favorites (to eat as well as draw), and red ones would be a nice challenge to paint I think (although I don't like to eat them much).
I have some bing cherries in the frig that I think would make a nice subject, we'll see if I can fit them in.

Yesterday I had a turkey on my roof!
Yes, you read that right. The cats and I were having a little evening 'set' on the front porch, and out of nowhere here comes this wild turkey sauntering up the drive and across the front lawn. We all gaped in surprise for a few moments, then my Isabella, the huntress of the group, realized it was a BIRD ~ a really big one and like one she'd never seen, but dang, that thing had a tail and feathers! ~ so she took off after it. Charlie was close behind. They chased it around the side of the house, then it flew up onto the fence (to my relief ~ I had thought maybe it couldn't fly) and then it flew on up to the roof. I went inside to get the camera, but by the time I came back out it was nowhere to be seen. It must have flown off to someone else's yard. But it was exciting while it lasted!
**Update** He's back! Here he is on the back porch. I went out with the camera and he skittered around to the front. I have no idea where he is now, but I hope he finds his way back home, poor thing ~

I put the plums up for auction on ebay. Thank you to those of you who expressed an interest! I appreciate the encouragement, truly.
I started a new blog just for these small pieces which I will offer for sale.
Paula Pertile's Pencil. How's that for a catchy title?
Its been a while since I've "done" ebay, so the listing is pretty bare bones. I plan to do a "me" page and all that at some point. I'm not sure how often I'll be putting pieces up for auction, we'll see how it goes. I'd love to do a few a week, but the reality is that with other commissioned work, these will get done when I can fit them in. There will probably be flurries, then dry spells. If you'd like to subscribe on the other blog you can get updates when new art is available.
(P.S. I also hope that the ebay listing doesn't show the 'seller view' with all the editing options for you, like it does when I view it ~ I'm rusty at this, and can't make it come up for me withOUT all that stuff. So if someone wants to check it and tell me it displays 'normal' for you, I'd sleep better. Thanks.)
I also welcome suggestions for subject matter if anyone is keen on seeing something in particular (like pears, as someone has already suggested!), or if you'd like to specifically commission a piece done in this style.
I'm also taking pet/people/building portrait commissions, and will be doing a post about that soon. NOW is the time to start thinking about Christmas presents, and if you think you might like something done, please let me know and I'll put you in the queue. Stay tuned for a post with all the details on pricing and all of that in the near future.

Other stuff:
I get to make this photo into a nice illustration for a client. Them's a lotta bricks! Wish me luck.
Hehe, well done for getting that great picture of the turkey, Paula! He would be lovely roasted (only joking!). Love the pears, in fact the whole series of little still lifes you are doing - lovely!
Maybe you can do a series on Turkey feathers next....LOL
first time I saw a wild turkey I was on my bike and nearly fell over. It was huge, I never realized they could get that big. if it comes back I hope your cats don't actually catch him/her, it could do a lot of damage to them
Hi Paula. I don't know why but my computer screen displays the halo. It also showed one for the plums. My computer is a Dell laptop and the screen shows all sorts of things - like a change in texture when people do a cut and paste job or other editing. My husband's computer screen doesn't, so go figure.
I am not an expert when it comes to oil painting but I found if I used too much linseed oil, it would 'bleed' into other areas of my canvas. I know that some oil painters paint on paper (for example art students often do exercises and assignments on paper because of the cost of canvas). Anyway, perhaps an oil painter out in blogging land could give you some tips on working with the oil.
Oh, the pears are lovely by the way.
Great turkey photo. We have them here but then what don't we have? :-) During mating season they make their turkey calls throughout the day and night. If they are close to the house it makes it difficult to sleep. I wonder what will find your house next? I am sure this encounter gave your kitties something juicy to dream of. :-)
Well how weird about the haloing Teresa~ because it doesn't even show in real life on the plums! Or on a scan, or on my screen. But on your Dell. That's reeeeeally bizarre.
Maybe there's a Farmer in the Dell that recognizes there is something unusual about the plums.
I promise I won't post on your blog anymore...lol.
My guess would be that the oil bleeds onto the surrounding paper - dragging a bit of pigment with it. If you know it can tend to do that, maybe you can plan for it a bit in your rendering. :-) More abstract elements to play with.
Looks awesome.
