Hello

It’s been a while since my last blog post and a lot’s been happening in my personal and professional life as an authorBilly and Monster Meet the President… all good stuff by the way and I hope to share more with you over the coming weeks.

So, I have 2 BIG morsels of news for you today.

First of all, my illustrator has finished the illustrations for the next Billy and Monster book titled – Billy and Monster Meet the President.

I subtly deal with an ever present danger in the world we live in today – terrorism.

I hope this book will be a springboard for grown-ups to share with their loved ones how to deal with strangers and practice good etiquette in public places. This should be out mid June and I’ll let you know when its live.

And now for (perhaps) the more exciting news…

The Billy and Monster Collection Audiobook is now LIVE and I’d like to offer you a free copy in exchange for a review.Billy Combo Cover Red brick

14. GOING OVER and Audible. On launch day I listen to another read my words.

And so, after so much pre—pre-pub, pre-launch, pre-anxiety—Going Over goes out into the world today.

This morning, for the first time, I listened to Jessica Almasy read the story—brilliantly!—for Audible.

It had been many years and many books since I heard another read my words, and it is startling, truly startling. Someone else, I thought as I listened, wrote this story.

Thank you, Jessica Almasy. This could not have been easy to do. I learned from you, from listening to you.

The Audible edition can be found here. I highly encourage you to find it.

For more about the book, for a look at early reviews, for a link to a free download-able sample, and for another look at that terrific Chronicle-produced book trailer, please visit here. To bop along to some 1980s music as you do, please visit the Going Over Playlist.

In the days to come I'll be linking to the bloggers who are kindly hosting interviews and my guest posts. Today (later) we will begin at home, with Chronicle Books.

15. Listen to Me

Okay, maybe not me (that sounds needy), but I do have something for you to listen to.

I've been working on a new series called the Defective Amish Detective. It is a humorous, without making fun, look at the misadventures of an Amish blacksmith and his Non-Amish friend. The defective detective is admittedly a repentant man with a questionable past. He has reached an age where certain parts (eyes, ears) don't work as well as they did. Through travels with his wife into Amish Country, the detective has become friends with Eli, who also happens to have a shadow over his past. Together, they work to help those that cannot help themselves. Things don't always go as expected and both of their pasts may come back to haunt them. These stories are full of slapstick, but they also share a message and have heart.

Now, it is a special treat for me to share with you that my publisher, Helping Hands Press, has taken a big leap in putting Volume 1: The Whoopie Pie Affair on audiobook.

You can get more information on Amazon: http://amzn.to/13PgsSR

Another treat is the voice you will hear on the audiobook. It is none other than Big Daddy Abel. Also known as BDA, he is the frontman for a band called the Amish Outlaws and a talented author in his own right.

If you enjoy audiobooks, I do hope you will give mine a listen.

16. In My Mailbox (12)

Sooo... It's been a while since I did one of these, and I was going to wait until after ALA to post, but, well, I kind of went a little crazy with books the last couple of weeks and it's just going to be too much for one post.

So this is just a teaser before The Big One!

Traded:

The Game of Sunken Places by M. T. Anderson
Book 1 in the Norumbegan Trilogy - used up my last credit on Paperback Swap

Borrowed:

The awesome costumes some of the Shadow and Bone partiers wore inspired me to go look up Russian art and design, so I requested these books from the library: Russian Art: From Neoclassicism to the Avant-Garde and Cultural Atlas of Russia & The Former Soviet Union. They are both huge and I'm so glad the Pasadena Public Library had them. I also got Shape Shape and One Drawing a Day because usually I regret it when I buy an art or craft book without perusing it first

Bought:

Cinder by Marissa Meyer - I think you know what that looks like already, so here's a photo of the author looking like she's in the middle of a fairytale (appropriately, it's a bookstore called Once Upon a Time). Read Thuy's event recap 6 Comments on In My Mailbox (12), last added: 6/17/2012

18. "Freed From the Page, but a Book Nonetheless"

Today's New York Times includes an opinion piece with a title that will resonate with audiobook addicts: Freed From the Page, but a Book Nonetheless. Although author Randall Stross uses the term to describe the Amazon Kindle, he makes some points that apply to the digitization of books in the audio format as well. I thought his argument that the Kindle may be the tool that will champion the eBook with an "irresistible combination of software and hardware for book buyers" connected with my desire for a crystal ball to predict the dominant format for audiobooks in a decade's time.
I am waiting for that combination of software/hardware that frees the audiobook from not only the page, but from the whole digital rights management murky mess. Will the cell phone be the distribution medium that will replace the CD? Audible does have their cell phone download option Audible Air, but the setup doesn't have a point-and-click simplicity that will allow universal ease.
And Stross' quote from Apple's CEO might explain why some of the DRM battles exist for audiobooks. Here's what Steve Jobs thinks about books and the need for a killer app for digital reading: "Yet, when Mr. Jobs was asked two weeks ago at the Macworld Expo what he thought of the Kindle, he heaped scorn on the book industry. “It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is; the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year.”" Read Stross' article for a rebutal to Job's numbers.
And Stross' conclusion praising Amazon's support of the eBook is equally valid for the audiobook industry: "The object we are accustomed to calling a book is undergoing a profound modification as it is stripped of its physical shell. Kindle’s long-term success is still unknown, but Amazon should be credited with imaginatively redefining its original product line, replacing the book business with the reading business."
