1. In My Mailbox (12)

Sooo... It's been a while since I did one of these, and I was going to wait until after ALA to post, but, well, I kind of went a little crazy with books the last couple of weeks and it's just going to be too much for one post.

So this is just a teaser before The Big One!

Traded:

The Game of Sunken Places by M. T. Anderson
Book 1 in the Norumbegan Trilogy - used up my last credit on Paperback Swap

Borrowed:

The awesome costumes some of the Shadow and Bone partiers wore inspired me to go look up Russian art and design, so I requested these books from the library: Russian Art: From Neoclassicism to the Avant-Garde and Cultural Atlas of Russia & The Former Soviet Union. They are both huge and I'm so glad the Pasadena Public Library had them. I also got Shape Shape and One Drawing a Day because usually I regret it when I buy an art or craft book without perusing it first

Bought:

Cinder by Marissa Meyer - I think you know what that looks like already, so here's a photo of the author looking like she's in the middle of a fairytale (appropriately, it's a bookstore called Once Upon a Time). Read Thuy's event recap 6 Comments on In My Mailbox (12), last added: 6/17/2012

2. Event Recap: Marissa Meyer at Once Upon A Time

Yes, yet another recap. Promise it's the last one for this week. Last week just happened to be an insane week for author events. Right after the Fierce Reads Tour, Marissa Meyer had a date at one of our fave indies, Once Upon A Time. Even though I had just seen Marissa at Fierce Reads (I'm not stalking her, I swear!) I was excited that she was getting her own date the OUAT.

Marissa started the event off by talking about how she got into writing. She wrote fan fiction for Sailor Moon for a long time (maybe 10 years) before she decided to tackle a full blown novel.  Someone asked Marissa if  she would ever take one of her old fan fics and re-write it into something new and she said no, but that they were still available on the internet for anyone who wanted to read them.

Marissa let slip a few details about book 2 of The Lunar Chronicles. It's going to be the story of Red Riding Hood (yay!) and Cinder will appear in all four books. Also, the character of Wolf sounds super dark and sexy. Swoon.  I really, really can't wait to read Scarlet.

I can't remember what Marissa was talking about here but it's pretty cute. After more questions Marissa got down to business and started signing books. I had my copy of Cinder signed the last time Marissa was in town so I just said hi and fangirled a bit. Marissa is so cool and nice. I had a great time at the event.

3. Good Night: Marissa Meyer + Book Blogger Meetup

We did a Good Morning with Read Now Sleep Later last time; this time it's a good night!

Who: Marissa Meyer, author of Cinder

What: We'll attend the signing at 7 and then congregate next door at
Rocky Cola Cafe for munchies. They are open til 10 pm and have great diner food!

RSVP: You don't have to RSVP but we highly recommend that you reserve your copy before May 31 if you are going to buy one*. I'm calling on them tomorrow to make sure they hold me a copy! Call 818-248-9668 to reserve.

*If you already have a copy of Cinder, you will need to at least make a purchase to get a signing line ticket. Once Upon a Time is a local indie bookstore, and in order to stay in business as well as continue to provide you chances to meet your favorite big-name authors from around the country, they need to sell some books!

Contest: The bookstore is also having a contest--bring your best Cinder shoe and you could win a gift card!

Ok, RSVP: I DO kinda want to know if anyone's coming, so leave a comment below :D or email frootjoos at gmail dot com

4. In My Mailbox (7)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren (inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie) where you can show off the books that you got last week.

Whoops, I've been missing in action for quite a while, huh? I went to see The Hunger Games (twice) and pretty much have been in a knotted-up ball of squee since then. I was in a reading funk before and now I'm reading like there's no tomorrow and I have to finish ALL of the books RIGHT NOW!

Here's what I got in the last couple of weeks:

For review from the awesome folks at Tor Teen:

Purchased from Vroman's Bookstore (I couldn't go to the event, but luckily I had friends who attended the Dark Days signing):

Purchased at Once Upon a Time in a moment of weakness, the book budget long forgotten:

I also bought a bunch of adult novels (for my new iPad 3!) and some borrowed some nonfiction from the library, that I won't mention here as they are irrelevant to this blog ;) I might dish about them over on Nite Lite if I have time.

What's in your mailbox?

You can take this image, just remember to link it back to thestorysiren.com!

I only had 2.5 books on last week's IMM. Which was totally fine because I knew I was going to have a crazy, mind-blowing, I'm-not-even-bragging-just-stating-facts bonanza of books this week. Let's go in chronological order...

Wednesday (Bought)

Bridge to Books threw our first Teacher/Librarian Schmooze of the year at Once Upon a Time in Montrose. Katherine Applegate, author of The One and Only Ivan (did you know she's married to Michael Grant? YES, The Michael Grant) spent the whole day with Alyson (KidLitFrenzy), first at her school and then at the bookstore for a signing and workshop on Literacy Cafes.

We gave two dozen teachers and librarians the Bridge to Books treatment:
