1. Sit tight!

We'll be back on Thursday with the Hoppy Easter Eggstravaganza giveaway hop, but until then I have a super-good reason I'm not busily recapping events and writing reviews.

His name is John Carter!

You can follow him, my girl cat Mars (Marceline the Vampire Queen) and her biological brother (and nemesis, apparently) Barnaby, on Instagram at #marsandbarsandcars (@frootjoos)

For now, I'm off to make him another batch of kitten formula :/ he's so little he can't feed himself yet!

4. Kitten's First Full Moon

This black and white book may not seem like much at first glance, but Kevin Henke's Caldecott Medal-winning Kitten's First Full Moon will soon become a favorite upon opening the cover.  A little kitten, upon seeing the full moon for the first time, thinks it is a bowl of milk and sets off on an adventure to try and reach it.  Kitten's expressive face, and the simple illustrations and story will delight readers of all ages.

Try also:

My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohman
City Dog, Country Frog by Mo Willems
Bark, George by Jules Feiffer
Gossie by Olivier Dunrea
The Tale of Tom Kitten by Beatrix Potter

5. B Season

Objective achieved, maybe! I've been busy since the last blog post, preparing for back-to-back holiday sales on December 3rd and December 4th (YIKES). I'll be in Longmeadow, MA for the third annual Brunch & Buy:

This is a super fun, intimate sale. It's in my parent's (cool, mod style) house, and includes some fabulous Western Mass artists who are, I can testify, amazing craftspersons and fab people. Plus there's a ton of food, and champagne. Tell your Western Mass friends! After the sale I'm hopping a bus and going back to Boston for Bazaar Bizarre! Erica Henderson and I are sharing a both! We're buying banners, we're dressing up, and we're preparing to just rock out all day.I've been doing these little paintings (each is 4.75" by 6.75") in batches for the last few weeks. I'm hoping to have another ten before Double Sale Weekend. If you see one and want me to bring it or save it for you, drop me a line.
Construction equipment puns!

This one is called "Mew Blood," unless someone things of a better name...

The phrase "Small Business Owner" is inexplicably enchanting to me when applied to an aardvark.

I think the rest of these are pretty self-explanatory.

6. Kitten Spots

Here are the finished versions of my kitten spots. As you can see, my intention at the time of developing these years ago was to have a different image for each season that I could use on letterheads, etc. in conjunction with the current season:
On an aside - well, I followed my own advice from my last post and went to see Paul Zelinsky speak at the Allen Public Library last weekend and he was just great. He showed us all about the construction of pop-up books and the amazingly complicated paper engineering involved. Additionally, the people at Storyopolis Entertainment ran a raffle wherein to my disbelief and amazement I won a very limited edition print of an image from Tony DiTerlizzi's The Spider and the Fly!

I am one of those people who never wins anything, so I was and still am so excited that apparently I had to blog about it! So the lesson for any local Dallas children's book aficionados is to go support these presentations - even if there aren't any future give-aways, you might get a chance to see the moving innards of a pop-up book or some such and how cool is that?!

7. Illustration Friday: Hibernate

Whenever possible, hibernate with your best friend :)

A little something from the archives until I find time to make new art.

Happy Autumn!

8. ferocious

The kitten seemed unfazed by Buster’s ferocious, canine prowess. The little hairball obviously didn’t know who he was dealing with.

…………………………………………………….

The Illustration Friday theme this week is “ferocious.”

So, decided to throw a little color on a quick sketch. It’s fun to not agonize for a change, hee hee!

9. Kitten Spots

I'm currently resurrecting a number of decade-old spot illustrations based on my kitten logo that I had intended to use as a sort of branding - on letterheads, business cards, invoices, etc. Here are two of them:I'd even started paintings for all of them, but got sidetracked by other work at the time and never came back to them. I probably won't use them for their original purpose, but I thought they might make for some more good digital practice.

10. Music Monday - Memory

Since last week was a dog song, today will be for cats...

(albeit a sad cat song. I'm still missing Jack a lot...)

Evil-kitten, Charles Maximilian Tennyson, III, is now nearly 3 1/2 months old. He's growing like crazy, getting into lots of kitten-trouble (has chewed through 3 sets of headphone cords in the past two weeks), and acting more cat-like by the day.

He is fascinated by the computer screen (see him here watching last weeks' Music Monday doggie video...)

And here lies studio-cat Mia. Who is still entirely indignant at Max's incredibly rude intrusion into her existence. There is still much hissing, growling and carrying on... Waiting for Max to get big enough for me to not worry for his life any time she is inside the house....

11. IF: Beginner

A couple quick ones from this morning's sketches, both appropriate for today's Illustration Friday topic. And in doing so, I happily got a chance to try out my new Col-Erase pencils:
While sketching these little guys I couldn't help but think back to our cat's kitten days. Here's a pic of our little guy before he put on fifteen pounds and developed a deep and abiding fear of the laundry basket.
He's since grown up to be a good-natured and laid-back seven-year-old, but, my oh my, those kitten days were fun!

15. Animal Wednesday: Virtual Pets

(And shameless self-promotion!)

I've been trying to teach myself a few things with my Print Shop Pro card program so yesterday I made these valentine notecards for my Etsy Shop.

I took colored copyright free photos and made them black and white, dropped in a few scrolls and hearts and flowers, and then I colored the kitty's eyes with a blue colored pencil.

So...here's a Sharpei Bouquet and a Smitten Kitten. Happy Animal Wednesday!

16. Cougars Like Young Nerds

Older men, younger women. This seems to be the norm, back in days of old when a farmer’s wife died, they took on a younger wife because they were able bodied and child bearing. The younger women could do what we now call “Multi-Tasking”. They would cook, clean, take care of the house, the garden, the yard, the animals, have children and raise them, and service their husband. For many years this was nothing that was frowned upon. Men did this thing all of the time for the benefit of the family. Children were taught to do everything both in and out of the farm. The more children you had, the more help you had. Large families were encouraged.

But Now…

Old man step aside…Mama wants fresh meat!!! Older women have ditched their “Golf Bags” for the caddies. Gone are the days where older women would rather rock their grand kids to sleep in their rocking chairs. Now they want to go out with their grand kids and hang out with rockers. Gone are the days of identifying a grandma by her polyester pants and tissue tucked sweaters. Grandmas are sporting fake breast and bikinis. Now a days young women can’t hold a candle to grandma.

This causes a problem. If grandma and grandpa aren’t together anymore, what do they do. Well, grandma’s on the prowl. She’s not looking for money because if she is smart, she got it in the divorce. She’s not looking to marry because if she does that, the money stops. She doesn’t want another old man, that’s why she divorced the one she had. She is looking for a fresh kill. A man who is young, dumb and full of…a head of hair. Grandma knows the game. She is wise and cunning. She knows that all young men want to do is find them a piece, do their business, and move onto the next. Frankly, that’s all grandma’s looking for too. She’s not interested in making breakfast in the morning, she’s done that for too many years. She does’t want to go through the trouble of changing her last name, she earned the one she’s got. She is interested in the thought of love, but only if he doesn’t have his heart set on shacking up in the house she got in the divorce. Grandmas are tired of being put out to pasture, but now that they own the farm they want to run around naked in the freaking corn field.a

18. Cat Sketch

It's been a surprisingly light week, which has given me time to work on some stuff of my own, which is good.

At the same time it's also given me the opportunity to laze around my house wasting time and not showering until nearly three-thirty in the afternoon, which is not quite as good.

(My wife doesn't appreciate the odors).

The above cat drawing is a little sketch I finished off this morning for a possible job, proving that even on the laziest of weeks there is still work to do.

Steve~
