Writer Rick Moody has signed a deal to write a new memoir. Henry Holt, an imprint at Macmillan, will publish The Long Accomplishment in 2017.
With this book, Moody will offer month-by-month details on the first year of marriage shared between himself and his second wife Laurel Nakadate. Executive editor Barbara Jones negotiated the deal with literary agent Melanie Jackson.
Here’s more from the press release: “Moody’s most intimate book to date, The Long Accomplishment begins at the happy start of Moody’s second marriage and follows him and his new wife through a sudden, yearlong storm of troubles. Although Moody worries that his past bad behaviors have somehow brought these trials – including serious illness, abruptly aging and infirm parents, a child custody battle, the deaths of close friends, and a calamitous home invasion – upon the family he loves, with humor, wit, and heartrending insight, he discovers that love is a sturdy boat, indeed the only boat, that can carry us across.”
Barbara Jones has been named executive editor at Henry Holt & Company. She will report to editor-in-chief Gillian Blake.
Here’s more from the release: “[Jones] was most recently editorial director of Hyperion Books and Voice, where she acquired Jane Lynch‘s Happy Accidents and edited the forthcoming novels Arcadia by Lauren Groff and The Red Book by Deborah Copaken Kogan, as well as the city of Houston’s current selection for the ‘One City, One Book’ program, One Amazing Thing by Chitra Divakaruni.”
Jones (pictured) will acquire fiction, memoir and narrative nonfiction projects. She began her career in magazine publishing with editorial positions at Rodale, Inc. and Meredith Corporation. She started working in book publishing at Disney’s publishing division.

Glee star Jane Lynch has inked a deal to publish a “funny and inspirational memoir” with Hyperion’s Voice imprint. Mel Berger at William Morris Endeavor represented the book and editorial director Barbara Jones acquired the book in an auction. Jill Schwartzman will edit the memoir.
Happy Accidents will come out in September, following the arc of the actress’ career–from her time in The Second City comedy group to her work in Christopher Guest mocumentaries. It will also explore how “embracing her sexuality helped her find both personal and professional joy.”
In the release, Lynch (pictured, via) had this statement: “If I could go back in time and have a conversation with my 18-year-old self, the first thing I’d say is, ‘Lose the perm.’ Second, I would say, ‘Relax. Really—just relax. Don’t sweat it.’ For a long time, I was anxious and fearful that the parade would pass me by, and that someone or something outside myself had all the answers. Having finally reached a happy place—a happy accidents place—I want to share my story with others, to let them know things aren’t as bad as they fear.”
