3. Review: 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE shows us how to successfully leverage a franchise

cloverfieldBy now you’ve heard the obligatory spiel about 10 Cloverfield Lane; how the J.J. Abrams-produced project was kept under wraps using a different name and then suddenly thrust upon the public on an unassuming January evening only months before its release. How it’s not exactly a sequel, but more like a “blood relative” to the […]

6. Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Anomalisa’ Trailer Promises A Unique Stop Motion Experience

Paramount Pictures has released the trailer for Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s stop-motion feature Anomalisa, which looks and feels like nothing else currently in the feature animation marketplace.

Based on a play written by Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and adapted for the screen by Kaufman and Johnson, the story revolves around a despairing motivational speaker who strikes up a relationship with a woman he meets at a speaking engagement.

The producers of Anomalisa have kept a tight wrap on the film’s promotion, releasing only an engimatic image or two since the film debuted on the festival circuit earlier this fall. After premiering to raves at the Telluride Film Festival, the much-praised film has gone on to win the grand jury prize at the Venice Film Festival and the audience award at the Mill Valley Film Festival.

It’s hard to imagine any major studio taking a risk on a non-family animated feature even just a few short years ago, so it’s quite remarkable that Paramount has picked up the film for distribution. Anomalisa is one of the clearest signs yet that animation is finally maturing as a commercial art form in the United States.

Anomalisa was produced by Burbank, California-based Starburns Industries (producers of Rick and Morty), and stars the voices of David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tom Noonan. It will open on December 30 in New York and Los Angeles, before rolling out nationwide.

9. Report: Disney have their hearts set on Chris Pratt as the next Indiana Jones

chris pratt 1000x667 Report: Disney have their hearts set on Chris Pratt as the next Indiana Jones

Between Guardians of the Galaxy and The Lego Movie, Chris Pratt was probably THE action/adventure star of 2014. With Jurassic World coming up in June and The Magnificent Seven about to begin shooting, that momentum doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.

If Disney has their way, we may very well see Pratt attached to another big franchise: The Indiana Jones series.

Ever since acquiring the rights to the swashbuckling archaeologist from Paramount in 2013 (who had held onto film rights even after the Lucasfilm purchase by the House of Mouse), the studio has been looking to reboot after the moribund reaction to Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There were rumors floating around that Bradley Cooper would get the nod that were eventually dismissed, but now Deadline is hearing that Pratt is their go-to guy.

Its still a rumor at this point, but something to keep an eye on in a world where we’re about to get a Mad Max revival (and I call that a great thing, by the way).

10. Simon Pegg to co-write Star Trek 3

simon pegg 398093 Simon Pegg to co write Star Trek 3

It has only been over a month since Roberto Orci walked away from the director’s chair on the upcoming Star Trek threequel, with Fast & Furious series director Justin Lin taking over the job not long after.

With Orci’s script for the film (which he co-wrote with John D. Payne and Patrick McKay) being tossed, Paramount needed to find a replacement, and fast, if the studio planned on making their 2016 Anniversary release date.

They didn’t have to look too far, as Simon Pegg (Montgomery Scott/Scotty in the current series) will be teaming up with Doug Jung (Banshee) on a new iteration of the script.

Pegg is no stranger to these duties, having teamed up with Edgar Wright to co-write Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. With that pedigree, this is a definite upgrade for the series and for the first time since just before the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, my interest is piqued.

This isn’t the first time that a cast-member has jumped into Trek’s big screen creative end, as he’ll join Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and Jonathan Frakes, who have all taken a swing at a Star Trek film of their own (though in director duties, but Nimoy and Shatner did co-write the stories for The Voyage Home and The Final Frontier respectively).

With any luck, this means Pegg will also have some supervisory involvement in any upcoming tie-in comics produced by IDW in the same way Orci did for the previous array of miniseries.

Star Trek 3 is set to release on July 8, 2016.

11. Paramount Makes A Bet on Spanish Feature Animation

Spanish feature animation is having its moment. Late in 2014, Ilion studio's "Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo" opened head-to-head in Spain against DreamWorks's "Penguins of Madagascar," and ended up grossing more than its big-budget American competitor.

19. The rumors are true -- WAKE movie news!

Paramount and MTV Films have picked up the film rights to the WAKE trilogy, with Christopher Landon (Disturbia) writing/directing. Miley Cyrus is considering the lead role.

As you know, even with people and studios attached, it takes a lot for a movie to actually happen, so there are no guarantees it'll get made. But I'm crossing my fingers.

I am thrilled!

As soon as I have more information, I will let you know. Read all the details at the link above!
