Summer is in full swing and two of our PubCrawl contributors have books coming out this month, including our very own Jodi Meadows and Julie Eshbaugh! Julie’s debut will be coming out this month and we are so, so, so excited for her book to finally be out in the world!

According to Bustle, White was inspired by the story of Vlad the Impaler for this new series. Delacorte Press has scheduled the release date for June 28, 2016. (via The Fandom)
She passed by the SCBWI booth at the San Diego Central Library grand opening celebration where I was signing books, and I dashed down the street after her, hollering “Miss Rumphius! Miss Rumphius!” like a loon. Because I was Just That Excited to see her, lupines and all! She’s my role model, after all.
(Instead of lupines, I plant milkweed.)
The library celebration was marvelous. I never actually made it into the new building for the sneak peek! The line was four blocks long when I arrived for booth duty at noon. But I had a wonderful time visiting with Edith Hope Fine, Cynthia Jensen Elliott, and my other fellow local children’s authors at the SCBWI booth and chatting with our friends at Yellow Book Road on one side of our table and the very nice Mysterious Galaxy folks on the other—along with author Mary Pearson, whom it’s about time I met in person after all this time being Facebook friends, and YA author Kiersten White, whom I know from Twitter, and whose new book sounds very much up Rose’s alley. (Human daughter of ancient Egyptian gods: you have her at hello.)

The street fair covered many blocks and was one of the best I’ve ever been to. San Diego Mini Maker Faire was there—I’m counting the days to the December event (December 7th, Del Mar Fairgrounds; spread the word!)—and lots of other interesting artisans and entertainers.
Not Miss Rumphius.
The Maker Faire booth. I finally got to see a 3D printer in action! It made that orange comb right before onlookers’ eyes. At least, I think it did. I wasn’t there for that part.
Happy to say I signed many copies of The Prairie Thief! And perhaps my favorite sight of all (after Miss Rumphius, of course) was this mother and son who sat down to read Fox and Crow on the spot.
I’ll have to make another pilgrimage downtown soon (with the kids, this time) to see the inside of the beautiful new library that was thirty years in the making.

Lee Wind at I’m Here, I’m Queer. What the Hell Do I Read? went to the SCBWI Conference in Los Angeles and shared some of his favorite quotes. I loved this one from Donna Jo Napoli: “Any civilization is built on empathy. If dreadful things happen to you, you learn empathy. …And for the protected child …the safest way for them to develop empathy is through a book.” Yes.
Oh, Roger. We adore you. Thanks so much for sharing your criticisms thoughts on the strike-through trend.
Sarah’s YA Movie News posts on her blog GreenBeanTeenQueen are some of my favorites! She mentions the Hunger Games movie stills many of us have seen – I’m not a fan, I have to admit. Katniss and Peeta are fighting for their lives so why do they look so pretty and stagnant? And what do you make of the upcoming Snow White movies?
Chicken Spaghetti shares a great list of picture books about New York. I’d also love to add SUBWAY by Christoph Niemann, which is one of my recent favorites that captures the energy and vitality of New York’s iconic subway system.
Kiersten White’s blog is one of my favorite things – she is just completely charming and hilarious and silly. Sure, her book PARANORMALCY just got a director…but what Kiersten is really excited about is Saved by the Bell’s Mr. Belding tweeting about it! I would be too. I mean, it’s Saved by the Bell!
It’s been all over the web but, just in case you haven’t seen it, these minimalist posters of children’s stories from Flavorwire are a must-see. Do you have a favorite? This is mine:
Evie is back and as sassy and sarcastic as ever. I love her quick wit and sarcasam so much and I found myself laughing out loud (I may have even snorted a couple times) throughout the entire book. I just would love to hang out with her, or go shopping with her. She is a hoot! Of course since Evie is back, so is Lend. I really adore his character. He is so sweet and kind and hasn't changed much since the first book. To read more of my review, click here.

SUPERNATURALLY, by Kiersten White, is the highly anticipated sequel in the Paranormalcy series. We pick up where the first book left off where Evie is living among humans, going to school, working at a diner, and finally has her own locker! But she soon gets bored after living her whole life at the bustling IPCA and finds herself with an opportunity to use her talents for the greater good. With many new faces, some old favorites, loads of action and mystery, this book steps it up a notch leaving you breathless and wanting more.
Where Paranormalcy was Evie trying to break away from the IPCA, Supernaturally is her realization that she needs to use her powers and IPCA is the safest way to do that. Her new job and partner, Jack, puts strain on the already distanced relationship between Evie and Lend. He is away at school and she is at home pining for her man. Jack and Evie end up in some precarious situations together and Evie initially keeps her new employment status hidden from Lend, causing a rift between them for most of the book.
More revelations were uncovered and Evie learned a lot about where she came from and what she was. I was shocked when she found out about her biological parents, definitely didn't see that one coming! Overall, a great addition to the series, I look forward to the next one!

Evie has lived and worked at the International Paranormal Containment Agency since the day she was found screaming in a cemetery as a small child. As far as the Agency knows, she's the only person in the world who can see through paranormals' glamours (like the vampire's she was screaming at that day long ago), which makes her invaluable to a group determined to bag and tag every paranormal pest lurking in the human world. All Evie wants is to be normal, but with a dangerous faery for an ex-boyfriend, an invisible shape-shifter for a crush and a mermaid for a best friend -- she's about as far from normal as she can get. And once she learns the truth about who she is and where she came from, nothing will ever be normal again.
In Paranormalcy, Kiersten White weaves a tale that feels utterly realistic, yet fairy-tale fantastic all at the same time. Her heroine, Evie, has the most authentic teen voice I've read, and is completely lovable with her sweetness and sass. Her importance to the Agency is oddly empowering and debilitating at the same time. Evie knows how to take care of herself (courtesy of her pink taser, Tasey), but she is under the strict control and monitoring of the Agency, her home and her job -- which is frustrating for both Evie and the reader. She proves herself time and time again, yet even her mother figure, Raquel, works hard to keep her in the dark.
This is only the beginning of the Agency's questionable practices. Paranormalcy is surprisingly rife with questions about just what makes humans special in a world populated by the supernatural, and what right we have to treat paranormals like animals. Evie also begins to feel some righteous indignation about the place she's always called home, which makes her character beautifully complex. She is surprisingly street smart, though she can be a little dense when it comes to faery commands. Evie is wonderfully vibrant and alive, as well as adorable -- especially in her relationship with Lend.
The banter between Lend and Evie is sweet and flirty -- full of the uncertainty that comes with the first stages of a crush. White allows readers to see the bond between the two teens grow, and to enjoy the lightness and thrill of infatuation. The relationship isn't rushed like so many in current YA, and watching them have fun together rather than launching into the burning passion of love is a nice change of pace which works perfectly with this bright and sparkling novel. Lend is unbelievably cute and absolutely perfect for Evie -- but not in a cheesy or annoying way. Readers will fall in love almost from the first moment they meet this unusual, vulnerable boy.
White builds a world of intricate hierarchies and complex philosophical questions of prejudice and discrimination, a serious streak that counterbalances the quips and quirks of her dazzling heroine. The descriptions are imaginative and unique, painting a vivid picture in the reader's mind of creatures both familiar and foreign. This world is populated by not only the ubiquitous vampires and werewolves, but also an incredible, original mythology of water nymphs and creatures who have no name. White's eclectic menagerie and stunning imagination will leave readers in awe.

Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed Paranormalcy. I thought it was one of the best paranormal reads of last year. Evie's voice, like you said, is incredibly authentic. I can't wait for Supernaturally!
I thought you would like this one! I really enjoyed it, although in a strange way I preferred Reth to Lend...he was such a complex and ambiguous character. Just generally I loved the way the faeries were portrayed. And the cast of characters really is fantastic! Definitely looking forward to Supernaturally :)

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.
Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. (Source)
Review
PARANORMALCY, Kiersten White, is and interesting concept of paranormals and those whose duties are to contain those who get out of hand. Evie thought she was a normal human with an added ability to see through glamours but as the pieces of her past fall into place, she starts to question herself and those around her.
I have heard such great things about this book so I just had to read it! I really liked the whole idea of the IPCA. I enjoyed exploring White's creativity through her words and the world that these characters live in. This world was a paranormal melting pot and I loved getting to know the different races through Evie's point of view. Evie lived for the agency, but when a stranger infiltrated it her views changed and it was an interesting road to follow along with her.
I have to say one thing bugged me about this book, but it didn't hinder my appreciation for it. Evie's obsession with pink and girly things really got to me. I am not that type of girl at all so it got under my skin a little. But this was just a small part of what made her unique as a character within the paranormal genre. She was very true to herself and was still strong at heart. Even though around Lend, she acted like a silly girl, it was very true to first love.
I loved learning about where Evie really came from. It was definitely unique and now I understand why everyone likes this book so much! I felt the story ended too soon and we only touched the tip of the iceberg about Evie and her past. I appreciated White's vision for the book and it really stuck with me after I read it. I am excited to explore that a more in the sequel, Supernaturally.

This one time I decided I was tired of hanging around outside Lish's tank. (Sometimes having a mermaid for a best friend sucks. For one thing, manicures are impossible.) So I figured, hey, if the Center I live in has a gigantic, coral-reef filled tank for Lish, and IPCA won't let me go on a scuba-diving trip, I'd make do. However, Raquel was not amused when my expense reports came in and she saw I'd ordered full scuba gear. She sent it all back, didn't let me keep any of it.

Isn't it a great thing to meet a Twitter buddy in real life for the first time? These conferences are full of such moments--and it's especially exciting when that Twitter pal is weeks away from the debut of her novel.
I'll recreate the moment of my first meeting with Kiersten White, author of PARANORMALCY*.
Me: OMG! You look exactly like the girl on the cover of your book. Did they pay you extra for that?
Kiersten: Uh, I didn't shower today. I'm planning to later. But it's early and I'm not a nonfiction writer so I wasn't going to--
Me: Yeah, yeah. Hygiene. So what is PARANORMALCY about?
Kiersten: Well, it's a paranormal with romance and--
Me: Why didn't you call it Paranormalromancy then? Because that would have been more accurate.
Kiersten: I'll keep that in mind for the sequel. [Explains a bunch of stuff about theme and identity and mermaids that I don't totally follow, but mostly because I am still hung up on the fact that she wrote an amazing novel in three weeks. THREE. It sometimes takes me three weeks to decide what kind of sandwich I want.]
Kiersten: You know, I really have to go and take a shower. I'll see you later. Or not. How do you block someone on Twitter? Never mind. I'll just ask Greg Pincus.
See? Taking a relationship from Twitter to real life is amazing. I will be a fan of Kiersten's work for life. And I'm sure the feeling is mutual.
