1. Conference Good News

As I said yesterday, there were so many good things happening in the chapter, that I knew I would forget some of the news.  Still I know I have not received all the things I was told.

Beth Ferry met her editor at last year’s conference and this year she showed up with a signed picture book contract.

Darlene Beck-Jacobson landed an agent for her historical novel and it sold on Friday at the conference.

Felicia Chernesky met her agent at a NJ SCBWI First Page Session and just signed a contract for her first children’s book – a rhyming picture book. There are more, but I have not heard back from everyone to make sure it makes the list.

Gayle Aanensen:  I loved singing Kathy her “Marching Song” and think we all sounded pretty good doing it–considering the number of introverts (like me)! Then followed Kate DiCamillo, both affirming and challenging.  Loved how Ame and Dan signed their book with such flair. Is he the next Dr. Seuss or what?  Thanks to all editors and agents who were more challenging than affirming, but in a good way. I left with that “thing with feathers” (Emily’s poem) deep in my heart.

Joanne Alburger:  Scott Treimel, the agent panel, Kathy Temean, and Jane Kirkland all said to do social media. Dan Yaccarino said to always say, “Yes!”, so I came home and created a blog. The faith and hope that was showered on all of us has been life changing.

Jeanne Balsam:  I had a terrific, enlightening critique with Stephen Fraser, inspiration from Kitty Griffin and Kate DiCamillo, and much, much more!

Saragail Benjamin:  FANTASTIC experience!  Kathy and her colleagues at NJ SCBWI always put together the most useful, helpful, inspiring conferences and this one may have been the best yet.  I made some good connections with other writers and with agents and editors–we’ll see how those pan out–but I’m grateful to Kathy/NJSCBWI for the setting they create, the culture they’ve established at these NJ conferences, making it so easy to connect with absolutely anyone.  Sessions led by John Cusick were especially thought-provoking, Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen is always informative and helpful.  Keynote speaker Dan Yaccarino was enthusiastic, full of energy, totally inspiring. I was grateful to him for sharing his experiences and positive approach to his career.  And I’ll never forget Kate DiCamillo, reading for 45 minutes in her clear, small voice, mesmerizing us all with tales from her life and career.  Her generosity as a writer and as a person, sharing so deeply, coupled with the magic she weaves with words–I know the experience is destined to become one of those memories I look to repeatedly for sustenance and comfort as I continue my own writing journey.

Susan Brody:  I’m channeling West Side Story: “Could it be? Yes, it could. Something’s comin’, something good…” Or so I’d like to hope!!! It was an awesome conference.

Connie Colon:  Rebecca Frazer gave my writing nice compliments along with some solid suggestions that I plan on trying right away. It was so great to see her — and all the way from London to boot!  I’m so glad I booked a consultation with Eileen Robinson. We ended up talking about several of my projects during our one-on-one time and I also felt like a made a new friend — she even gave me a hug goodbye on Sunday! I was really blown away by two workshops in particular this year: Felicia Chernesky’s Let Poetry Add Punch to Your Novel session and Laurie Calkhoven’s Meditation/Acting Techniques to

2. Announcement

As most of you know, for the past ten years I have devoted my time and energy to building the New Jersey SCBWI Chapter and to helping our members advance their careers. My goal as Regional Advisor has always been to help SCBWI members develop their writing and illustrating skills; to land agents and publishing contracts; and to provide world class workshops and conferences. Although this is a very sad announcement for me to make, I have decided to step down as Regional Advisor in July.

Under my tenure, the New Jersey chapter has grown in membership, programming and reputation. I’m not leaving the chapter or organization—just devoting more time to my own writing, and illustrating, which is why I joined the SCBWI in the first place. I will continue to provide information to help you, keep posting information about your successes, and talk about many other exciting projects on my blog.

As this will be my last conference as Regional Advisor, I hope you’ll consider attending (visit www.regonline.com/njscbwi2012conference  for info). Let me assure you the chapter will continue and thrive. Several members have already inquired about stepping up, so I’m confident the chapter will have a new RA by the time I leave, making it a smooth transition.

I’d like to end by mentioning that I am very proud of how each of you have grown over the years we’ve been together. I will always be a cheerleader for all of you—I believe in you, your writing and your illustrating—and hope we can stay in touch in the future. You have become part of my family and friends and I know I will miss you.

I mentioned I’ll be doing a number of projects in the future. If you’d like to be kept informed, please drop me an email and put “Future List” in the subject.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the June conference or over the summer.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

3. The End of SPROUTS MAGAZINE

All good things come to an end.  When I started as Regional Advisor, I started putting up a Newsletter online for members to read.  After a few years with the help of Leeza Henandez, Anita Nolan and Laurie Wallmark, we turned out a very high-end magazine that was focused on bringing children’s writing, illustrating information to the subscribers. Plus, with the goal of showing off SCBWI writers and illustrators to editors, art directors and agents in the industry.  During the last four or five years, it SPROUTS built quite a reputation in the industry, not only with the writer’s and illustrators, but with many industry professionals.

I am sorry to say that National SCBWI will not allow us to continue the magazine, unless we can offer it for free to everyone.  Since that is not possible, this is the last issue subscribers will receive.  Please do not send in a check for next year.  If you are an illustrator or an author who was working on writing an article for the next issue, you can send them to me and I will post them on this blog.  I know it will not provide you with a nice glossy magazine to sit on your coffee table, but agents, editors, art directors, and artist reps do visit my blog and it does get a lot of traffic.  With 20,000 visitors a month and growing, you will get more notice submitting something here.

Here is a copy of the cover for the last issue:

If you would like to submit an article, please send it to kathy (dot) temean (at) gmail.com and put “Blog Article” in the subject box.

Thank you to Leeza, Anita, Laurie, and all the writers and illustrators who helped make this a wonderful magazine.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

4. New Jersey SCBWI Announcement – Laurie Wallmark

I would like to let everyone know that Laurie Wallmark, who is the New Jersey SCBWI Assistant Regional Advisor, is stepping down.  In the last four years Laurie has become, not only my right arm in running the New Jersey Chapter, but she has become a cherished friend.  She is also the perfect ARA, since she is dependable, hardworking, nice and her strengths were my weaknesses and vice versa.  She would always give me her honesty opinion, but let make the final decision and never got mad.  Everything we did was considered and discussed, so we could come up with the best scenario for the members.  I never regretted for one minute having Laurie by my side and thanked the heavens every day for sending her my way.

I am taking this very hard, but I love Laurie and when you love someone you want the best for them. I know stepping down is the right move for her.  It is wonderful to know we helped so many people get published, but it is also  hard to accept that all the good work being done does not allow a minute for us to write, illustrate or submit anything.  So I am giving you a heads up that the New Jersey Chapter will be going through a transitional phase as I try to sort things out.

The year that Laurie started, I had planned a one and a half day conference.  I didn’t think adding a half a day would add a lot of work, but it did.  Even with Laurie’s help with the things she could do, I did so much work that I ended up in bed for two months afterwards with pneumonia.  It almost killed me, so I wanted to go back to a one day conference.  Laurie said she thought she had learned enough during that conference that she would be able to increase her work load.  I said, “Okay, but if it almost kills you, we are going back to a one day conference.”

Those were the years when we held our conferences at the Princeton Theological Seminary; the years where we were a sweaty mess by the end of the event.  I remember barely being able to lift a fork when went to dinner afterwards.  Since then we moved the Summer Conference to a hotel with air-conditioning.  Last year, we moved to a bigger hotel and expanded the conference to two and a half days.

I have signed the contract to do the conference at the same hotel this year, so we are locked into doing a two and a half day conference.  Laurie is willing to stay until the conference and will help train volunteers who may be willing to help do the things she did.  This transitional phase will determine how the chapter goes forward.

I am cancelling all first page sessions in 2012 and I am cancelling the Mentoring Workshop we normally hold in March, in order to focus on the 2012 June Conference.  After the conference, I will evaluate how many members stepped up to the plate and how well they handled their assigned jobs.  Pre-Laurie, I had members volunteer to help and then throw up their hands half way through the job or at the last-minute and say, “This is too hard,” then throw the job back on my lap.  I had to drop all the things I had on my assigned tasks and work non-stop over Memorial Day Weekend and the other days leading up to the event.  By the time the conference started, I was exhausted.

This year we are planning to have online registration that will let attendees pick their editors, workshops, pitch sessions and lunch tables.  This one thing should eliminate weeks of work and will provide you with the same level of interaction with the editors and agents that our conference attendees have grown to love.  I already have a large amount of the faculty invited, so our conference should still be able to end up better than the previous year.  No one should think it will be lacking in any way.  The only thing that will be lacking is the other events I had planned to do and will show up in the SCBWI

5. GREAT NEWS! Kate DeCamillo

Thanks to agent Holly McGhee of Pippin Properties, Kate DeCamillo has agreed to join us at our Annual Conference on Sunday June 10th. She will give the ending talk. Afterward sanswers questions and do a book signing. Her books will be on sale all weekend, so people do not have to take time to purchase their books before the signing. This will be the first time I get to hear Kate, but I have heard she is a great speaker, a lovely person, and we all know she is a great award-winning author.  We should all leave the weekend totally inspired to go home and make it happen.

This year is shaping up. We’ll have Dan Yaccarino start off Saturday with a enthusiastic pep talk to get everyone’s blood pumping.

Editor Rebecca Frazer will be joining us, too.  I’ll have more info later on that, but it is really exciting.

See the previous announced editors and agents by clicking this link.  http://kathytemean.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/13059/

I will announce more editors and agents before the end of the year and remember, if you want to be considered to do a workshop at the conference, you need to fill out the form and send it in by November 15th.  Click the link below to fill out the form.

8. Art Show Teeming with Talent

Art Show Teeming with Talent

By Leeza Hernandez, Illustrator Coordinator, NJ SCBWI

At the New Jersey SCBWI 2011 Annual Conference, more than 40 illustrators exhibited work in the Juried Art Show.

This is the second year that NJ SCBWI has offered the show to illustrators—in addition to the regular portfolio display—to help show off the variety of member talent to industry professionals during the conference. The show ran Saturday and Sunday and was accessible to all attending members for viewing.

The jury included editors, art directors and agents from this year’s faculty. They selected the winners based upon the following factors: Craft, Consistency, Concept, Impact, Marketability and Appropriateness.

First place went to Lisa Falkenstern (www.lisafalkenstern.com) for her Steampunk-style Humpty Dumpty piece. She left the conference prior to the announcement of the winners, so a friend called live from the amphitheater to break the news.

Falkenstern’s reaction was regret for not staying until the end, but also shock. “I entered my piece because I wanted to see the reaction to Steampunk from children’s book people,” Falkenstern said. “I was sure I wasn’t going to win—I just wanted to see  what people would say. To me it wasn’t a typical children’s [book] illustration.”  She added that she never wins anything so the shock was two-fold!

For winning the show, Falkenstern will visit two publishing houses to meet with art directors and editors and show her portfolio of work.

The two runner-up winners were Kelly Light www.kellylight.com  and Katia Wish www.katiawish.com , who each received a $50-off gift certificate for a future NJ SCBWI event.

Here is Kelly Lights winning entry:

Here is Katia Wish’s entry for the art show.

Honorable mention went to Kim Wood, who received a $25-off gift certificate for a future NJ SCBWI event.

When thinking about showing an illustrator’s work one member of the jury had this piece of advice: “There were many strong pieces and I found this a hard decision. In the end it was marketability that broke the ties, because in the end—even if all the other qualities are there—if it can’t find a place in the bookstores, it has no chance of success!”

There was no theme for the juried art show. IIlustrators were invited to submit one print of a piece of work that showed off their style in the best possible way.  NJ SCBWI will be featuring the juried art show, portfolio display and a special bonus exhibit at next years’ conference, so stay tuned for more details.

Leeza Hernandez is an illustrator/author and serves as the Illustrator Coordinator for New Jersey SCBWI. www.leezaworks.com

Thanks Leeza for sharing an inside view of the art show.
