If you're on Twitter: In honor of Father's Day, Barnes and Noble @bnbuzz is using the hashtag #DadBooks to solicit groan-worthy puns and corny dad jokes based on well-known books. Be sure to check it out or join in the pun.
Here are a few (with links to their posts):
Oh, the Places You'll Mow
The Girl Who's Certainly not Getting a Dragon Tattoo
Gone Grill
If you're on Pinterest, check out my board, "Comic strips featuring books." I've been collecting comic strips that feature books and libraries for the last several years. If you have a good comic strip that I've missed, please feel free to send it to me and I'll pin it.
And lastly, since Father's Day is tomorrow, I'll share two of my favorite "dad" picture books.
- My Dad by Anthony Browne (Macmillan, 2010) is a funny, homage to the classic jack-of-all-trades kind of dad. On each page, tribute is paid to the bathrobe-clad dad's many great qualities. The illustrations are wonderful - even as he is depicted as a fish or an owl, he retains his brown, plaid bathrobe. You can see them here [http://us.macmillan.com/mydad/AnthonyBrowne].
- Tell Me a Tattoo Story by Alison McGhee and illustrated by Eliza Wheeler (Chronicle, 2016) is lovingly written and illustrated. A young tattooed dad weaves a tale for his son using his tattoos. A sweet story that should appeal to many young families.

I don't always write about books and libraries. I like to ponder things that I find curious or interesting, and sometimes I write about them as well.
BonBon Break, "an online magazine for modern moms," has purchased my article "If It Doesn’t Have a Face, Will They Eat It?" It began appearing on their site yesterday.
The article is a satirical commentary on the current marketing trend of anthropomorphizing common fruits and vegetables with comic representations and new names, e.g., Mighties, Halos.
Sadly, it doesn't include my photos (I admit to being an amateur in photography), so I will include them here.
The article has nothing to do with libraries, but you might get a chuckle from it, and I hope you read it.
If you missed my last article on BonBon Break, "Five Things You Didn't Know about Librarians," it's linked here and in the sidebar.

There are plenty of resources available from the Children's Book Week Digital Toolkit. I like to order the actual posters, but sadly, I forgot this year. The good news is that there are plenty of last-minute event kits and activity sheets available for download [http://www.bookweekonline.com/activities].
Also, be sure to download this year's official CBW bookmark with art by Cece Bell. [http://www.bookweekonline.com/bookmark]

As the motion picture industry has multiple awards including the Academy, Screen Actors Guild, and Golden Globe, so too, does the publishing industry. In books for young people, the best known are the Caldecott and Newbery Medals, which were awarded this month, and I wrote about earlier. ( See the complete list of winners here: [http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2016/01/american-library-association-announces-2016-youth-media-award-winners])
There are however, numerous other awards including (but not limited to) the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Cybils Awards (chosen by bloggers and for which I have twice been a judge), The Schneider Family Book Award (which recognizes excellence in portraying the disability experience), the Coretta Scott King Awards (recognizing books by African Americans that reflect the African American experience), and the Pura Belpré Awards (honoring books that celebrate the Latino cultural experience).
Also recently awarded were the Sydney Taylor Book Awards for children and teens. These awards are given to books that "authentically portray the Jewish experience." You can read the official press release here: [http://jewishlibraries.org/blog.php?id=315]
Many schoolchildren are introduced to the Jewish experience only through Holocaust education. The Sydney Taylor Awards recognize all aspects of Jewish culture.
The Association of Jewish Libraries asked for my assistance in promoting this year's winners, and I am happy to do so. A complete list of winners and honor books is below.
If you haven't read any of the winners of these or other awards celebrating the many facets of our diverse world, consider adding several to your TBR pile.
The Sydney Taylor Book Award Winner for Younger Readers:
- Ketzel, the Cat who Composed by Lesléa Newman with illustrations by Amy June Bates (Candlewick Press)
- Adam & Thomas by Aharon Appelfeld, translated by Jeffrey M. Green with illustrations by Philippe Dumas (Seven Stories Press)
- The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz (Candlewick Press)
- Everybody Says Shalom by Leslie Kimmelman with illustrations by Talitha Shipman (Random House) Shanghai Sukkah by Heidi Smith Hyde with illustrations by Jing Jing Tsong (Kar-Ben Publishing)
- Hereville: How Mirka Caught a Fish by Barry Deutsch (Amulet Books)
- Serendipity’s Footsteps by Suzanne Nelson (Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Random House) Stones on a Grave by Kathy Kacer (Orca Book Publishers)
Note:
Keep watch for the 2015 Cybils Awards winners. They will be announced on Valentine's Day, February 14th.

The fun daily challenges range from describing a YA book only using words that start with the same letter (e.g. Harry helps Hogwarts, hefting horcruxes), to sharing YA reaction videos/memes.
Some YA authors will also be participating with impromptu Twitter chats, Tumblr posts and more.

And on the topic of YA books, I attended a Penguin Random House Book Buzz event on Friday. Library of Souls, the final book in the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series will be coming out in September. The final cover will be revealed this month. And coming next spring, is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiars, the Tim Burton movie based on the first book in the series.
And finally, today, as it is every Monday, you can visit the Nonfiction Monday blog to see what's new in nonfiction for kids and teens.

As the years go by, I get less and less comfortable choosing “best of” books at year’s end. There’s no way that I can read all of the deserving books, and what I may find moving or amusing may not resonate with others. However, with that being said, and in no particular order,
here are my personal favorites of 2014:
Juvenile Fiction
- The Song of the Quarkbeast (The Chronicles of Kazam) - Jasper Fforde
- Dear Committee Members: A novel - Julie Schumacher
- Fighting Fire!: Ten of the Deadliest Fires in American History and How We Fought Them - Michael L. Cooper
- The Scraps Book: Notes from a Colorful Life - Lois Ehlert
- My Country, 'Tis of Thee: How One Song Reveals the History of Civil Rights - Claire Rudolf Murphy
- Viva Frida - Yuyi Morales
- The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia - Candace Fleming
- Gaston - Kelly DiPucchio
- A Dance Like Starlight: One Ballerina’s Dream - Kristy Dempsey
- Tugboat - Michael Garland
- Viva Frida - Yuyi Morales
- Goatilocks and the Three Bears - Erica S. Perl
- Tuck-in Time - Carole Gerber
- The Troublemaker - Lauren Castillo
- The Bambino and Me - Zachary Hyman
- The Song of the Quarkbeast (The Chronicles of Kazam) -Jasper Fforde
- Gus & Me: The Story of My Granddad and My First Guitar - Keith Richards

Just some odds and ends for a Wednesday ...
- Today is the final day to nominate books for the 2014 Cybils. These are the awards for us, the blog writers and blog readers. Please nominate your favorites. I'm a judge this year. I'd love to see what's tops on your list!
- Please be sure to enter my contest for a free copy of My Zombie Hamster by Havelock McCreely. The publisher was nice enough to offer me a free copy, so why not take advantage of the chance to win it for your child, school, or library? It's easy to enter - just a comment on the appropriate blog post will do. Details here.
- In many states, today is the last day to register to vote in the November election. If you want to earn the right to complain about the way things are, you should vote. You really should.
- Did you know that I'm a member of ALA's Great Websites for Kids Committee? We spend a lot of time curating and evaluating great websites for kids. If you haven't tried the site, please check it out - Great Websites for Kids. If you have any comments or suggestions for new additions to the site, I'd love to hear them.
