Hypertension (or high blood pressure) is a common condition worldwide, and is known to be one of the most important risk factors for strokes, and heart attacks. It is considered to affect almost a third of all adults over the age of 18.

Hello fellow artists!
As part of our ongoing efforts to make Illustration Friday more of a community focused on the art of idea generation, here’s our Inspiration Board for this week’s topic of HEART.
You can download, save, drag and drop, print, or do whatever you want with it if it helps you to brainstorm ideas for your illustration.
Let us know in the comments if this is something that you think is helpful or inspiring enough for us to keep doing!

thought this painting from last year entitled "ribbons undone" was perfect for this week's
IF theme, "heart".
{still remains one of my favorites...most likely because i took the inspiration from my favorite musical maven,
Tori Amos and her song of the same name.}
PRINTS AND OTHER NOVELTIES FOUND

I attended last week’s free webinar, Creative Playgrounds, which was sort of a more casual pre-game event for next Monday’s online course Building a Freelance Illustration Business.
During the webinar, illustrator Nate Padavick shared his entry for this week’s Illustration Friday topic of POINTY, and you could almost hear everyone’s heart melt so of course I had to share it.
Hope this inspires you!

for sure!
this little
treasury is everything. anyone who curates a treasury based on
Tori Amos songs, well that's someone i just instantly have to show some love for! and, including MY tribute painting to Tori? happy...and humbled. :)
this painting form last year, entitled "ribbons undone" (named after the Tori song of the same name, of course) is one of my favorites. visit my
etsy shop to purchase a
print of her or a cute little
compact mirror (only ONE left...) . also, over at
fine art america, you can purchase this piece on a multitude of awesome products....from tote bags to duvet covers.
and, just because we are talking about Tori here, well here's the inspiration for this piece....:)

As I came to the end of the Sweet Easter collection yesterday, doubt started to overwhelm me. It had already begun creeping into the space of my heart, but yesterday I was submerged and left bobbing for some kind of clarity. Did I do ok? Was this strong enough?? Is it what my agent wanted??? Will it sell????
The art licensing realm is quite different than what I'm accustomed to. I had a system to my art, always got great feedback, and I thought I knew what I was meant to do! I thought "I'm going to paint fantasy, and that's that. That's me! It's what I do!". I am learning, quickly, that nothing, NOTHING, is "That's that.". EVERYTHING is changing, all....the.....time.
That includes my art. What I'm accustomed to is, as my friend put it best, being comfortable. Art for licensing is stretching me so thin that I'm being redefined, challenged, pulled out of my box. I am usually the one teaching my students to get outside of their comfort zone, and to get outside of the "box" we choose to place ourselves in. Time to take a big bite out of my own teaching! I'm comfortable with my subject matter, my compositions, and techniques. I'm not playing anymore.
This has led to doubt. I feel helpless, lost, without faith, no trust, and begin to think I just don't have what it takes. But doubt is a LIE. It's the biggest lie out there that you'll ever find. It just takes a grain of doubt to bring your entire soul down. At least...that's usually how it rolls with me. That doubt must, I repeat, must be replaced by JOY.
Tonight, after teaching another watercolor class about getting out of your comfort zone, I decided to continue searching for words of wisdom, insight into the world of creating art for licensing, and found
this amazing interview by
J'Net Smith with
Joan Marie.
This! This is just what I needed to hear! If you have any doubt, this simple yet compelling interview resounds all the advice and wisdom I have found thus far, on creating art for licensing. I thrive on constructive feedback, and have found very little in the licensing community so far. But there are TONS of information and interviews. These are the keys to gaining feedback. Read. Read. Read. It's just different then what I'm accustomed too. That's okay!
And...
TRUST
LOVE
Find your JOY. Your VOICE. Your SPIRIT.
Then share it to the world.
This is the key I must continue to remind myself. To remind others as I teach. To remind yourself.
I've been slammed and not getting to the blog of late (warning - it will not get much better over the next month). However, I just showed this performance to my son and was remembering how awesome it was. So, enjoy!

what's that you say, mr. polar bear? you'd like to take me away with you on an ARCTIC adventure? well, yes sir. i would happily oblige you, mr. polar bear...as we seem to have a true love and appreciation for the same type of climate. :)
{it's NO secret...i loathe summer, heat and humidity. not one bone in my little august born body likes this weather...especially once the numbers hit triple digits. add in the words "oppressive" and "heat warning" and yeah, nicole is not a happy camper. so.....
AC is pumped up, Christmas music is on (after all it is Christmas in july) and i'll be dreaming of snowflakes and Christmas lights while painting at the easel. speaking of "Christmas lights"...(sorry, couldn't resist attaching the video below) which leads me to some wishful thinking...perhaps a little Chris Martin under my preverbal Christmas tree. hmmm..;)}
***ps and btw, here's a link to the painting above...FOR SALE as a PRINT***
while getting my mail yesterday, i happen to stumble upon a little *love* between the blades of grass.
how adorable is this?! almost looks like a piece of mulberry paper. so sweet....:)

Low voices whispering high notes of pleasant love lyrics
You don’t understand
You just don’t
Of how it feels to be lonely
Nor how it tastes to be bitten by the cold wind
The shadows dancing vigorously attempting to lure me
You don’t understand
You just don’t
Of how it hurts, to have no one
Of having dry lips yearn for kisses
For you are up above the skies with all it’s glories
You don’t understand
No you just don’t
Of how my breasts longs to be cuddled
Nor how my heart weeps

What warms your heart on a cold day? What warms your heart when the tides of change come crashing in? What warms your heart when the” no’s” become overwhelming? What warms your heart when the crowd scatters and you are “Home Alone”?
I have a whole list of favorite things I like to look at periodically. These are things that Warm My Heart. I found myself smiling and even laughing. They are things I feel that God has blessed me with. When I look at them I see stories! I see people, I see events… and more. Life is so much more than what we see during our day. Life is a tapestry of stories that intertwine and make memories for us. Some are so real we can almost re-live them just recalling them to our memories.

Oh little Peepsqueak. This picture of you reminds me of something that happened to me when I was little. We were visiting an aunt in Washington. She had a rope that dangled from a tree in her backyard. She also had a big DOG that came running into the yard barking at ME! I jumped on that rope and UP, UP, UP I went! I did not even know I could climb a rope! I just did it! ha ha!
Most of my art comes from my imagination, but it is also from my memories and from my life experiences. All that being said, I think I can still climb a rope!

We add to our history every day of our lives. That history might not written on pages made of paper, but it can be found in our hearts.
Looking back on the events in our lives may help us to define who we are today or who we may become in the future. By tracking events, we may even see a pattern or a path.
Here is a picture of my 1 and only art gallery show at the Denver Children’s Museum. It did not draw big crowds, family members did not pour in to see it, but it was FUN!!!! It drew in LITTLE crowds… tiny people. All the art was about 18 inches above the ground! It was all about “Fairy Tales”. My painting was titled, “The Princess and the Pea”. It is still one of my most favorite fairy tales. This show was key in my journey to discover what I liked doing and that was illustrating for kids!
What history will you write on your heart today? Where is your path leading you? Sometimes you have to rise above the mucky muck to find it. The world is full of mucky muck, but there are always grand adventures around the corner!
“Let’s sit upon a cloud today or hop on a bird and fly away! “

This picture reminded me of a time when I was about 11 years old. We used to go to a local “pond” and there was a big old oak on the bank which had a rope hanging from it. We would run, jump “tarzan style” onto the rope and swing out over the pond – letting go as we swung out and taking a “flying leap” into the water. One Sunday afternoon, I ran from the car, jumped for the rope – grabbing it with both hands and – BANG !!! My head hit the tree and left a scar which I still have in my temple until this very day. I had not noticed that someone had wrapped the rope around the tree one time – it was not hanging free. As I swung out – I actually flew in a circle, right back into the tree trunk!
oh no! Owch! I can just picture that!!!!! haha!
