Amy,
Vanessa and I managed to get out and sketch the cherry blossoms at
Spring Grove Cemetery while they were peak. It was a beautiful day. There was also a plein air group out that day, so a lot of painting was going on.
Here is a vine on location:

It is a beautiful building and it is being renovated for The Brandery. Its windows are incredible!

Poor 80 year old Bravo seemed a little overwhelmed as the exhibit got busier and busier and hid in the corner for a while. He eventually moved into a better sketching pose. |

Although spring is arriving in a sluggish fashion, it has been nice enough to get out here an there. Here are a couple outings. The church next to Washington Park has the wrong date. My desire to move things along was expressed by writing a 4 instead of a 3 on the date. It felt like April that day.
March 14th, not so much... It was WINDY with less sun than I would like when it is in the 50s.

They are in the middle of a reconstruction so I am looking forward to their next phase. I love the shark rays. They two are named after my and Vanessa's cats (Spike and Sunshine).

More urban sketching. A good time of year for it…maybe the best by my estimation.

Siena circa 2006 |
This is a crazy week of deadlines and prep to head out to Italy next week. To warm up since the weather has kept me from a lot of urban sketching (yes, I am a wimp when it comes to cold), I did this from my 2006 photos.
Boy, my photos were mostly awful. I am glad to get a second chance. At least I have a better "real" camera now (sorry iPhone). I just signed up for Vine video so I hope to show some little videos of the sketchbook panning to location.
I have got all my sketchbooks together and replenished some of the half pans in my watercolor set. I even got some ice-fishing fingerless gloves to use (I suspect it will still be a little chilly).
I am going with my mother, aunt and a couple cousins so it will be a fun trip, except for the fact that Italy currently has no pope, no government... Interesting times...
Fortunately, our travel keeps us away from Rome, but my Aunt and cousins are meeting us in Florence via Rome. We are going via Milan because I have always wanted to go there. It is a design capitol of the world! Troy will be here in Cincinnati to hold down the fort.
Finally, here is a picture of our car Miffy from my sketchbook. She was doing that wonderful kneading the air thing. I am painting a lot of furry pawed critters this a year so it was good practice. Her fur is short enough that you can really see the toe/claw articulation.

Fairy House Exhibit |
I went with my friend
Amy to
Krohn Conservatory after the weekly illustrators lunch for a quickie sketch session. It was also a good chance to take photo reference of tropical and rainforest plants for an upcoming project.

Here is the view and the sketch... |
I sketched the outside of the Krohn in the fall. So many cool structures to choose from... I can hardly wait for the butterfly exhibit.

Sketch of the Driskill Hotel where the Anniversary Party was held |
As promised, more sketches of Austin.
Our purpose for the trip was for our friends' Bob and Maureen's 20th anniversary party at the Driskill Hotel. It was a lovely bash. This sketch is our gift to them.
 |
Congress Street leads to the capitol building... |
Troy and I walked from our hotel to the capitol building on Saturday. It was only in the 60s but so humid. I can only wonder what it is like when it is actually hot.
 |
The Frost Bank Building AKA the Nose Hair Trimmer Building... |
On Sunday, Troy and Bob hung out and I went to the South Congress Bridge to sketch. It had cooled down quite a bit and I got a bit chilled sketching. I should have brought my fingerless gloves...
My next post will have a couple pictures of the city (We also spent a bit of time shopping on South Congress street.) as well and a bit about the BBQ in Lockhart.

The view from the patio of our hotel in Austin. |
Our hotel was very clean, meticulously so. It was odd to me then when I went to sketch on their lovely patio, it was covered in Grackle droppings... I had to cover my chair in a towel as a protective barrier.
I was later informed by our friends that grackles are the bane of outdoor eating and patios and keeping areas "poo free" is very difficult.
I suspect that these are the birds that Hitchcock was depicting in his movie...
So I did this:
On the last evening of our vacation, we had another encounter. We went to see
Django Unchained at the insistence of our friends at the
Alamo Drafthouse. After, we got dinner at a Chili's at one of those fancy outdoor malls they have been building.
The trees were so covered in grackles that you could hear their calls in the car. Even to me, who is hard of hearing, they were loud. As we left, Troy had to dodge poop.

Troy and I went with our friends Nicole and Ray to see the
Greg Proops podcast last night. (I know, "seeing" a podcast seems like a strange idea.)
I really want to come back when the weather is nicer for a day of sketching at Indiana University.
We had dinner at
FARMBloomington before the show. Great place!

I ended up early downtown for my Painting the Figure class with Gil Born at the Art Academy Thursday and had a bit of time to sketch. (I had to pick up my husband Troy from the very sad Reds playoff game and the traffic was crazy so there was not time to take him home before class started so I was dropped off.)
I love the restoration they have done with that whole area and am obsessed with how lovely the architecture is. It was the perfect time of day too when the sky is golden.
I got some odd looks as I sat on the sidewalk across the street and sketched. I need some sort of little chair or sit-upon for these occasions.

Quick sketch at Findlay Market Saturday Morning |
 |
Gelato=Yum... |
It was such a nice day on Saturday that I stopped by Findlay Market to sketch. I also did a little shopping for apples and stuffed pork chops from Kroger Bros. But of course I always stop for a little gelato.
Dojo Gelato has some great flavors. I got a mix of Maple Cream Cheese and Pumpkin.
It was very weird to open the
Cincinnati Enquirer Sunday and see their photo of the market from almost the same vantage point. I suppose it is the best angle and there is seating there. It was very serendipitous. Although, I doubt this is a situation like the TV show Heroes where a character was drawing the future. If I start sketching natural disasters however, watch out! It could be a total Cassandra situation.
Anyway, here is a doodle I did while waiting for my computer to restart. Thank goodness I am upgrading!
Yesterday I went with
Vanessa Sorensen for a little walk at Spring Grove and some sketching. It is so beautiful there.
It is interesting because I did not know that Spring Grove was constructed in the 1830s after a Cholera epidemic and the overcrowding of little church cemeteries was unsightly.
This is the
Robinson Mausoleum. I found out after that it was built in 1874 for $35,000. The Robinson family owned Robinson’s Circus from 1824 to 1916 when they sold it to the American Circus which later merged with Ringling Brothers. The place is cram-packed with these historical goodies.
I forgot to post a couple weeks ago this sketch of the dock at my in-laws at Lake Barkley in Kentucky. It was a great place to view birds. I saw herons, a turkey vulture, and many others.

My little setup next to my sketch... |
Finally, I just started a new blog. It is meant to be a place where I develop children's stories. First off is Francis Tales. I did a dummy a few years ago. This is a new iteration of that to start, but it will be a home for stories, experiments and little nugget ideas. Stop by and say hi:
http://christinawaldtales.blogspot.com/
Wednesday we tried out a new place for the downtown Illustrators Lunch,
Rock Bottom Brewery. We seem to be cursed in our choice of lunch location so I hope this one will be around a while. '
After lunch, I did a little sketch of the fountain. I have always loved it and it was the brief time of that day with lovely weather.
This weekend, I dipped my toes back in the con pool. Since I am doing my web comic,
Pop Smoothie, I hope to make it to more of these. SPACE in April and maybe CAKE in Chicago next year.
It was a wonderful time despite my lack of stuff for sale.
Anyway, here are some sketches I did during the event. I wish I had gotten some of the more elaborate costumes, but they were Saturday for the contest.

My sketch from Park(ing) Day |
 |

Friday was Park(ing) day where different groups in Over-the Rhine converted parking spaces into little parks. My friend Cheryl Crowe asked me to sketch in the Queen City Bike space for the afternoon. It was great fun. I had dressed expecting cold and rain, but we lucked out!

MG and cool chrome plane at Lunken... This is my new itty bitty sketchbook that fits in my new purse. |
Squeezed in a couple sketches between deadlines and posting some old ones. I have been biking more lately at the newly expanded trail at Lunken because I love it! This weekend was
Aviation Days so it was a double bonus. The weather was a little iffy yesterday though or I would have taken a Cessna ride over downtown Cincinnati.
The MG outside the show was gorgeous. It almost had cliched sparkle. Too bad a bunch of bikes were leaned against it.

Sketchbook pages from the Norman Rockwell Museum |
After Vermont, we stopped at the Norman Rockwell museum. It was a little rainy, but still worth it. I wrote more about the visit on the
Cincinnati Illustrators Blog. As a fan of Howard Pyle, I was not disappointed. The campus was dotted by Norman Rockwell's son's sculptures.
 |

We then made the trip to Boston. Here are some images from the sketchbook. We stayed at
Taylor House Bed and Breakfast in Jamaica Plain at my friend from high school's suggestion. Super cute area of town...
 |
Our bed and breakfast... |
We just got back from whirlwind tour of the Northeast including Upstate New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
I have been attempting to keep up my sketchbook.
Here are some of the images:
 |
My Aunt Joan and Uncle Dick's Victorian mansion in Stamford, NY. |
The trip up was a little grey and got rainy. It was storming when we arrived in Stamford. We visited too briefly and headed up to Vermont.
 |
Welcome to Vermont... |
The main reason to go to Vermont was for my Godmother's daughter Nora's wedding in Woodstock, VT. The bride and groom went by "Team Floogen". It was a lovely ceremony and included a happy hour the night before at a place called Bentley's and Brunch the day after.
The day of the ceremony, there was a really cool food and art festival in downtown Woodstock.
 |
Looked good but we stuck with a lobster roll. |
 |
The first bite is taken with the eye... |
That afternoon I got a bit of sketching in even though rain was a worry. They had some gorgeous buildings in that town, especially the public library...
I also sketched the building adjacent to the library.
 |
Cool building in the library quad... |
Here are some wedding sketches:
The bride got a wonderful dress at Kleinfeld, lost of detailing. I never got the name of the designer. Sadly, she did not get on the show, but discussing the name "Kleinfeld" gave me an idea of a Seinfeld/Kleinfeld mashup comic for
Pop Smoothie... I will post it this weekend.
The bride and groom left the ceremony on a motorcycle and their cake topper feature and bride and groom motorcycle theme as well.

The next day was a farewell brunch.
 |
Pano of Quechee Gorge outside of Woodstock |
Next, we headed up to Danby, VT to visit our friends Andrea, Ed and their daughter Olivia.
I will post the sketches from that the next post, but first, the view from their backyard:
 |
Bernie Sanders and this view! (This photo is in evening light...) What more could you ask for? Stay tuned! |
 |
I wised up this time and sketched from a shady spot. |
Even though I am buried in deadlines, we took a quick trip to the newly renovated park downtown across from
Music Hall called
Washington Park.
It was such a beautiful day. They have a wonderful fountain, playground and dog park.
Here is the dog park. This puppy had the right idea:
I could have stayed all day if I did not have crazy deadlines. The hour there was rejuvenating.

For one reason or another I have found myself spending quite some time in various cafes and tea rooms over the last couple of weeks. It, of course, is no hardship. I am not complaining. In fact, it's passion of mine. I love food. Good quality food, that is. I just don't usually get enough of an opportunity to eat out being a poor artist.
I like to think I have high standards when it comes to these types of eateries. For me a good cafe, or tea room, must have good homemade fare, locally sourced ingredients (wherever possible), good coffee and a laid back vibe. These drawings are from a couple of the local cafes I've been hanging out in recently. As you can see, for one reason or another, some experiences have been better than others.

Here's another from a recent sketchcrawl in Chesterfield. It did not take place at night. It was just that the sketch was looking a bit bland, a bit empty, so I kept playing with it. I started with the idea of a dark sky and then decided on some colour. I'm not sure that it works - but you'll never know if you don't try. The green light looks like some ghostly apparition. And, as I found out, when doing the research on the Royal Oak (Chesterfield's oldest pub), there are actually ghost walks held around the The Shambles' ancient narrow streets. So, it seems, it's quite appropriate.

Another from our day sketching in Chesterfield. This was the 'shot' that I wanted to get; the crooked spire poking up (for want of a better phrase - it's very late) above the town's rooftops. It was such a hot day, so I took my Scottish colouring out of the sun and went into the air conditioned library where I got this view. I drew whilst a lovely old girl told me every last thing that she'd bought with her Marks and Spencer's gift vouchers. And every programme she enjoyed watching on tv. And what she thought of this government. Bless her. That could be me one day. It could be all of us, I suppose.

Last Saturday Sketchcrawl North went sketching in Chesterfiled. In complete contrast to the week before, when we were sketching in a wintery Buxton, the day was hot and sunny and perfect for drawing outdoors. I've always wanted to visit Chesterfield. That may not sound that ambitious, or difficult, as I do live in Derbyshire but I've only ever passed through it. Every time, though, I become distracted and mesmerised by it's
famous crooked spired church - which is a concern as I'm usually driving. The crooked spire is a thing of beauty. It really is. There are various theories to how it became twisted, from untreated wood to the lead they used, however it happened the results are quite stunning.
Inside the church I came across this notice board and stopped for a while to draw it. I'm really kicking myself now that I didn't go up into the spire. I have no idea why. It's apparently as crazy a structure from the inside as the out. I'm also kicking myself that I didn't go into the church gift shop. I can only imagine the array of spire souvenirs I could have laid my hands on. Actually, it was probably a good thing that I didn't.
Finally, I squeezed this little sketch in, below, before we all met up at the pub. It was literally a five minute sketch which is probably a record for me. I kinda like it though. These three drawings were made in my tiny Moleskine sketchbook I also made a couple of larger sketches from various places in the town but I'll pimp them up before posting them.

I'm playing catch up at the moment. Not on the drawing front (I have NOT stopped drawing recently) but on all the other things that go along with that. Like blogging. These are a couple more drawings from last weekends sketch crawl in Buxton. And very shortly I'll post the drawings from this weekends sketch crawl in Chesterfield. Our group seems to have a very busy schedule because there's more planned for next weekend. Phew. Exhausting, but great too.
I did this little one in the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery where I held my exhibition last year. This is of the mantelpiece in the Victorian room. At least I think it's the Victorian room. But don't listen to me I seem to think everything old is Victorian. I have no idea why.

Since I got less scared about drawing outdoors a whole new world of subject matter has opened up to me. It was bad enough when I was having my attention caught by all the indoor potential drawings, but Holy Smoke, there's now drawing opportunities EVERYWHERE I look.
Here's some of the chimney pots on our row of houses. I love chimney pots, they have so much character. Plus, with houses as old as ours, the pots have been added and replaced over the decades (centuries even) so that every chimney is different from it's neighbour.
These aren't the greatest drawings or journal spreads that I've made but I was just getting to grips with this subject matter. I was just getting my pen around chimney pots. To be honest too, I actually made these drawings from the comfort of my armchair. They are a selections of the chimneys that I can see from my window. Well, it was VERY windy.
