26. Growing the Tree...

Last night was spent working on the study of the tree again.  I think I've worked out the solution to all the green on green - enough contrasts in light/dark, saturation, value... there are such nuances to deal with.  I thought my hills were pretty much done, but now I realize that once I get the trees in there, there'll be some adjusting of surrounding colors to do and possibly some texturizing that I like from the study.

Again, hard to get accurate color with a flash at night -
I've got to try it with the flash off

I'm hoping to start work on it tonight while it's all fresh in the memory.  However, I spent the day at the park with the kids (all day...without sunscreen), and now I'm really tired.  There's something about spending time in the sun that just drains all energy from you.  Hopefully, I'll get a second wind.

27. Counting Dragonflies!

HELLO
A long delayed post! I've had a busy few months regarding life, which has made it a quiet few months regarding drawing :( Still! I have some drawings of animals for you to look at. I'm playing about with my textures a lot, trying to figure out where the point of 'too much' is. I don't think I've found it yet. Perhaps there isn't a too much? Perhaps eventually all my work will disintegrate into abstract planes of textures, shapes & colours. There's an idea. Watch this space for that one!

Until then, numbers 4, 5 & 10 of a series of wildlife/counting illustrations! A whale could fit way more than 10 starfish on his back, but then things were getting a bit intense for the purpose I think...

29. The texture of traveling. I love taking pictures of textures,...

The texture of traveling. I love taking pictures of textures, colors and patterns. I often don’t do anything with them but I love the look of them and I definitely think they tell you something about a place (sometimes more than a wide shot of the whole scene). These are an assortment of shots taken on our summer 2011 travels in Northern China.

31. The City Museum in St. Louis

The City Museum in St. Louis is the most amazing place! It's not really a museum, it's an adventure! It's a converted old warehouse with something to see every which way you look. The kids LOVE it and so do I. There is so much art built into every surface. The mosaics alone are to die for. On weekends, it turns into a nightclub. You must visit if you get the chance!

Texture & Pattern are everywhere!

32. The Feel of Water

When you dive into a pool or rush into the sea, do you notice the feel of the water against your skin?Is it hot or cold, muddy or clear, salty or fresh? Is it slick (with oil, sadly) or still pure, slimy or silty? And when you begin reading a story, are you aware of the feel–the texture– of the story? What do I mean by texture? It’s like the physical sensation that you’d get from rubbing your hand

33. Illustratio Friday .:. Detective

Bad detective

A little late this week, lots of things happening, learning Dreaweaver, working on my portfolio and participating in the Zero2Illo 12 week challenge. But here it is: a really bad detective.

Un poquito tarde esta semana, ando en muchas cosas, aprendiendo dreamweaver, trabajando en mi portafolio y participando en el desafío de 12 semanas en Zero2Illo . Pero aca está: un detective my malo.

34. Monday Artday … Awake

Is there anything more horrible than a mosquito keeping you awake? You get out of bed and try to catch it, but you can´t see it, so you go back to bed, and this little beast keeps buzzing like he is on a mission, so you try to catch it again and this goes on all night, until you go crazy. I hate mosquitos so much!

35. … Illustrated Recipe …

This illustration was just accepted to a wonderful blog called They Draw & Cook,  it has two of my favorite things: illustration and food. This recipe is a re-interpretation of pasta puttanesca, but easier, where boiling the water is the hardest part. Visit, enjoy and contribute, it has great works in very different styles and tasty recipes. Hmm I´m hungry now.

Hmm me dio hambre.

36. Illustration Friday :: Subterranean

What goes underneath our floors? who knows. Ever wonder why socks go missing? Maybe there´s a subterranean gang of criminals at work.

Que pasa por debajo de nuestro piso? quién sabe. Haz pensado porque se pierden las medias? Tal vez hay una pandilla de criminales subterráneos trabajando.

37. Mei Matsuoka

meimatsuoka

Mei Matsuoka is a Japanese-English illustrator with some really charming work. She mixes media like a champ and the work is totally playful and innocent. See more at her portfolio.

(Found via Sarah McIntyre, thanks Sarah!)

38. Embossing a pattern

This is an illustration from a story I am developing. I wanted to show more texture in the pieces and especially in the sheep. So, here I embossed a pattern over the sheep's wooly coat.
Using Painter X, I created the pattern first, one that I liked, saved it, and then used it with the pattern embossing brush to create the effect.

Using a technique like this once in a while can be effective. One just has to be sure not to overdo it.

I am hoping to find some other ways to create various textures that won't overpower the other spreads in this book. I love the journey that illustration takes me on each day!

40. The Doctor is In

I'm a huge fan of the newest version of Doctor Who, so I thought it would be cool to illustrate the newest doctor (along with my favorite of his companions, Freema Agyema) as the cover to a classic comic book.

42. LOW PAY AND A POTHEAD...Simone's 1st job memories

How fitting that we're talking about first jobs. My first job was being a camp counselor. I think it was between my freshman and sophomore year in high school.

I worked for (purposely not inserting name here) summer camp. I loved kids and summer and thought it would be an amazing thing to do in the summer. Mind you, I was not a CIT - counselor in training. I was a JUNIOR COUNSELOR. I got a WHOPPING $200 for eight weeks of work. I got a BONUS of $50 for being a BUS COUNSELOR. That's a total of $250 for the entire summer.

Okay, so I got to flirt with the boy counselors at camp (the director only hired good looking counselors). And I got to be friends with a bunch of the girl counselors. But I have to be honest...the $250 wasn't worth it. What was that, less than $1 an hour when you factor in the week training before camp started and the bus rides from and to camp at one hour each.

This was also my first time being in the presence of illegal drugs. A counselor drove me home one day (I have no clue why I didn't take the bus home) and he pulled out marijuana from the glove compartment. He was going to light up at the stoplight. When I yelled at him and made him put it away, he laughed at me and called me a dork.

Seriously, those are my memories from my first job. Low pay and a pothead.

Anyone else work at camp and have horror stories to share?
