30. The Invisible

Wahl, Mats. 2007. The Invisible.

This is an international book only recently translated into English and published in the United States. It has also apparently been made into a movie. Since I don't keep up with these things, I depend on statements such as "now a major motion picture from the producers of The Sixth Sense" to stay informed. I also happened to notice that the movie is being released on dvd soon--very soon. Did I love this one? No. But it was a good book. It is your somewhat typical ghost-narrator story where the ghost has not "passed" or "moved" on and he's still haunting this world...viewing his friends, his family, and in this case following the police detective on the case of this "missing boy." Hilmer Eriksson was a somewhat normal kid--a teen--who went for a simple errand on his bike and never came home. Now it is up to Detective Fors to investigate and discover the grim truth about what really happened that Saturday. What makes this book good is the writing. While I don't really go for ghosts as narrators, this one is an exception for me because the style is so good. I wouldn't say I loved it, but I enjoyed it far more than I expected. (Though I know I'm in the minority, I don't really get the whole ghost-narrator thing as done in Lovely Bones.)

It was on one of the first days in May that Hilmer Eriksson discovered he had become invisible. (1)

33. Grimmoire 55: Rumplestiltskin

It's been a while, hasn't it? Something about the summer just pulled me away from the Grimm and into the poetry. But with the chill in the fall air and the change of light it felt like time to reenter the forests. I almost wanted to ignore this chestnut altogether. The story has been told and retold and, really, it isn't that good in my opinion. But I remembered once in a drawing class we

The Missing Locket is a paranormal mystery featuring two lovable young sleuths that girls 9 and up will absolutely love. It is the perfect, darkly atmospheric story for young fans of intrigue and adventure to cuddle up with on those gray, rainy afternoons or read in bed.

It is the summer of 1964 and Gus and Cynthia, two best friends who are very different from each other yet very close, are bored out of their minds. Then they have an idea—why not explore Cynthia’s old and mysterious attic? After all, Cynthia lives in one of those huge mansions with three floors and lots of rooms, the perfect kind of house that stimulates young imaginations. In the attic, among all the antiques, spiders and cobwebs, they discover a huge, dust-covered old trunk.

When they open it, they find an old, dirty, pink ballet costume and slippers, which Cynthia, unable to resist, quickly tries on. Then something very strange happens… Cynthia begins to dance and twirl with the effortless beauty of a ballerina! Stunned, she soon takes it off. As they head towards the door, the unimaginable happens—they’re ‘pulled’ back to the trunk as if by magic, and the attic changes, becoming cold and still when only a moment ago it had been hot and muggy. What’s even more strange, the ballet costume and the trunk now look brand new!

Under the costume, they discover a sailor dress, and this time Gus tries it on, with drastic consequences… she’s whisked in time back to 1914, to the time when their grandmothers were only twelve years old. Of course, later on, Cynthia joins Gus, and together they must help their Aunt Belle and solve the mystery of the missing, bell-shaped locket, an adventure that takes them over on a steamship across the Atlantic and where they make friends with a young boy’s ghost.

Talented author Mary Cunningham has drawn a delightful, intriguing fantasy world that will delight middle readers. Her love for storytelling and for the genre really comes through the pages. The pace is quick and there’s enough twists and turns to keep juvenile fans of mystery guessing. The characters of Gus and Cynthia are sympathetic and interesting and young girls will be able to identify with them. This is the first book in the series and I certainly look forward to read the second book, The Magic Medallion, soon.

35. MY FAVORITE THINGS (Grandma's Glove)

Good Morning All:

Here it is, June 7th and it's chilly enough to wear a light jacket. I'm forcing myself to enjoy it though, as I know that within the next week or so, the temperature could be in the 90's to low 100's and I'll be wishing for a little chill!!

I spent a small portion of the afternoon yesterday going through a box of my treasures. Included in this box is my mom's wedding ring set from 1946, a strand of pearls given to me by an old lady named "Pansy" that lived next door to me when I was a little girl, and lots of other goodies that would most likely be junk to anyone else!

Also included in this old shoe box is my Grandma Watson's glove. A single glove, as the mate belongs to one of my mom's sisters. I don't know exactly how old it is, but I know that the gloves were sent to my grandma by my grandpa during World War I. I don't even know where he purchased them, although I've been given the broad idea that it was "somewhere in Europe, maybe Germany".

It is so delicate and tiny. I wonder if my grandma ever wore the gloves, as it looks as though it really wouldn't fit an average sized woman.

I imagine it is made from silk lace, but I don't know for sure. There are two mother of pearl snaps on the wrist...

and it has turned a beautiful light tea color over the years. It's kept in the same envelope that my grandpa sent them in originally. Unfortunately, the stamps are long gone and the writing on the envelope was done in pencil and is mostly worn away.

I'll keep this one single glove, along with my other little family treasures, in the old shoe box until it's time to divide them up. But...every once in a while, I'll open the lid and take a peek at the history that will one day belong to my kids.

*************************************************

I took a stroll through the garden today and Jr. came along with me. He's not too helpful, but he means well......

And, as usual, here's a link to My Etsy Shop. I've listed a set of 3 "Ghostly" collage ACEO prints today. As always, if you're interested in purchasing something in my shop, but you don't have an Etsy account, simply email me through my blog and I'll be more than happy to work with you.

36. Ghost-Rex & Kid Frankenstein!

Friend and filmmaker Seth Worley is at it again.
Don't know how much I can spill about it, but I was asked to craft a prop for his latest film. It's supposed to resemble a page torn from an old book on Tennessee ghost lore....
The legendary....GHOST REX...!

After I turned that in, Seth wanted to know if I had done any comic book covers that he could use to populate the kid's tent.
I'm sending him my TrogHammer comic ...and while rooting around I found this guy in a dark dank corner of the archives. I dusted him off and brought him out into the light...
Say hello to Kid Frankenstein!

    37. Book Review: The Ghost Mirror, by Jamieson Wolf

    The Ghost Mirror
    By Jamieson Wolf
    eTreasures Publishing
    http://www.etreasurespublishing.com/
    Copyright 2007
    Ebook/Paperback
    YA/Dark Fantasy

Thirteen-year old Mave is no ordinary girl. For one thing, she happens to be a black-eyed, redheaded powerful witch, so much so that even her own parents fear her. Not understanding her powers, her mom and dad have chosen to ignore and neglect her to the point of emotional cruelty.

The only person in the world who seems to love and understand Mave is her grandmother, and when she takes Mave to live with her in her big mansion, the young girl couldn’t be happier. Soon, however, Mave discovers a strange and mysterious old mirror in the attic. Grandmother warns her to stay away from it, but sometimes curiosity can be more powerful than reason. Mave touches the mirror, with dangerous consequences. She’s transported into a dark and magical world and faced with a grand mission: she’s to destroy the evil Lavender Man… or die.

Talented author Jamieson Wolf has penned a dark, sometimes macabre, beautifully written novel for young adults and adults alike. His lyrical prose flows like the magic in his story and has an old-fashioned tone to it which perfectly complements the plot. Some of the vivid images in the book are quite haunting, like the Tree Lady of the forest and the Lavender Man sucking the spirit from his victims. Above all, the beauty of the language stands out, as well as the author’s obvious love for storytelling. I was drawn from start to finish into Wolf’s darkly magical world and look forward to reading the sequel soon.

    38. RUNNING LATE

    Well, Good Afternoon:

I'm running late today. I've been running late since first thing this morning. It was a busy morning and I got off to a slow pace. I did manage to get my morning walk in. From that point on, things have been crazy. My mom had an appointment for an Ultrasound. While I was trying to get ready to go and pick her up, the phone rang three times, two surveys and one wrong number. Ugghhh!! I finally got out the door and drove over to pick up my mom. The Ultrasound was scheduled in a new building. One that I had never been to before, so I, of course, got lost. Just a little off track. But, we found the place and made it with not a single minute to spare. I sat in the medical facility for about an hour. After finishing up there, I dropped my mom off at her Senior Apartment and drove on home. Next in line: an appointment with a landscaper to come in and give me an estimate on breaking up some hard-as-a-rock dirt in my garden path. I must admit, I was very pleased with his quote, and a little surprised that he would take such a small job at all. Then, he hung around for awhile and chatted and looked at my walking sticks. Now, I'm off to take my son to his guitar lessons.

Phew ~ I really need a quiet day to catch my breath. Maybe tomorrow.

In the meantime, I listed an older ACEO today in My Etsy Shop.

    California Citrus Ghost

I am hopeful that I will have something of interest to blog about tomorrow. Thanks for hanging in there and continuing to read my blog even on these rushed and chaotic days.

    39. Choose your own unhuman boyfriend!

Who says you have to be human to be a hottie? Undead eye candy can be just as appealing as the real stuff plus they come with some extras. These are some of my personal favs.

    1) Vamps. If you can get past those pesky, razor-sharp incisors that he keeps sinking into your neck, he's an awesome b/f. No worries about this guy letting himself go since he is eternally-youthful. He's easy on the grocery bill and will never stand you up as long as you go out after dark. One downfall, eventually you will be replaced as you will die and he will not. Here are a few of my favorite vamps.

Kiefer should totally work this look into 24!

Henry Fitzroy from Lifetime's Blood Ties based on the books from Tanya Huff.

Steph to Henry: "Bite me, please!"

    2) Werewolves: If you choose the werewolf you'll be getting an animal for a boyfriend! One thing is for certain, you'll never have to worry about him using your razor. While he's cuddly and fun to pet, this guy will be on the prowl every full moon unless you put him in a cage.

Okay, so Jack's a bit old, but he's a vintage hottie! And while I prefer Michael J a little more clean shaven, he is still an adorable werewolf.

    3) Back hair not your thing? What about a magic man? He's awesome to have around if you want to cast a spell on an evil co-worker but if you make this guy mad, he's might to turn you into a frog.

Harry "beefcake" Potter & the adorable Steven Strait from The Covenant.

None of the above doing it for you yet? Okay, I've got the perfect guy for you.

    4) Ghosts: He isn't vain since he can't see his reflection in a mirror, he has plenty of time to hang out (at least until he sees the light), and you don't have to worry about him cheating on you since he doesn't actually have a body. The only problem is convincing other people he's real.

Patrick Swayze convincing millions of women to look into pottery making classes.

    Clueless Bruce. Dude, you're dead.

Okay, so we wouldn't want to run into any of these guys in a dark alley or anything, it's still amazing how books and movies can make even the meanest, blood-sucking, rip-your-heart-out-and-eat-it dudes hot! So who would you choose? And don't even say Edward Cullen from Twilight because he's all mine!

    xo,
    Steph
