29. Skywatch Friday: Early Autumn in Rhode island

This is my first Autumn back in New England after being in Calif for 16 years.
I'll come back to this spot many times as the leaves start to turn their vibrant oranges, reds and golds.

Days like this don't get any better! Happy Skywatch Friday everyone.

Please go here to see more pretty pictures ;)

30. Illustration Friday: Pattern

For those of you who know my art you know that pattern is ever-present in nearly everything I draw or paint. I was going to show all of the past images that I did on patterned paper, but I chose instead to show two paintings I did with cloud patterns. One is in the west and one is here on the east coast.

I loved the rolling golden hills of California with the clouds and trees casting shadow patterns in subtle shades of blue and violet.

Now that I'm back in Rhode Island I get to see the change of seasons again. I love the marshes here, each with their own signifcant pattern. As the temperatures fall the grasses change color just as the leaves on the trees would.
The gold and amber striations make yet another pattern where there used to be lush green. Everywhere we look we see patterns in nature. To me, that's a perfect world and I try to savor every moment of it.

31. Thankful Thursday: The Welcome Wagon

There were a few goodies waiting for me when I arrived in Rhode island. It helped ease the transition of closing one door and opening another.

Dear, sweet Marianne did this small canvas of the sun, moon and sparkling stars. The outer edge of the mandala has seagulls in the sky.I hung it up right away where I get to admire it several times a day.

She also sent my "H" atc for hibiscus, which I love...

...and she surprised me with this cactus rose. Such a soft, beautiful painting.

Then she wrote a "Welcome Home" note of this Frida Kahlo card.

She really knows my heart.

Thank you, dear friend!

This card winged its way to me from a friend I left behind. She and I both love ravens/crows. All of the black writing is hers, playing off that game of "telephone" we've all played as a kid. The inside of the card says "We're not ready to accept your departure." I smiled for days at her humor!

(Click to read it. Pavels is a local bakery in Pacific Grove.)

The next piece of mail to put a smile on my face was Mr. Grouper, my "G" atc from none other that Mim. I just adore her drawings!

She wrote a sweet note on the dragonfly card by Lynn. Thank you Mim!

Speaking of Lynn, she sent my "I" atc card with none other that that hoochy-coochy Inspiring Ismerelda! She's one of my favorites! I'll bring her out every time I need to channel my diva ;)

She mailed her in another one of her beautiful cards. Thanks so much Lynn!!

Inside this wonderful card from Lisa B was my....

..."J" is for Jackdaw atc. The Jackdaw is the crow of the old world. I love him!

But wait....

She also sent this long box. I hope you can read the writing if you enlarge it.

Inside it was this....

...AMAZING hand painted crow's feather depicting the great plains where Ibis and (my totem) the crow are often found. WOW! Thanks so much Lisa!

You're so very thoughtful ;)

And yesterday I went to the post office and found this wonderful card that says it all from KJ! And the bonus of my first week here so far has been meeting KJ face to face. Yay!! It was easy-peasy, like having my sister stop by. Now our friendship has taken on a new dimension and has gone beyond virtualness. Is that a word? Anyway, it felt good to finally connect. I'd love to meet all of you one fine day.

I hope I haven't forgotten anyone.

Whew, what a first week!! One to be thankful for, for sure.

32. Animal Wednesday: From my new roost

I finally uncovered a scant few art supplies so I could paint a quick 'something' and get back in the loop. This was painted in minutes in a dark room, but hey, I tried!

I've been in the new house in Rhode Island for a week and a half now. Right down the street on the same side of the road is one of my favorite places, One Hundred Acre Cove in Barrington. It's a river with marshes and a zillion birds. Okay, not quite a zillion but I'm awakened each morning by the most beautiful variety of sounds including loud, baritone bullfrogs. I was thrilled to see the posts put up for the Ospreys to nest on. Cape Cod started that years ago to get the Osprey population back up. So now I have them in my back yard. I'm grateful for that. (Mim, you'd love to kayak there.)

I'm trying to re-adjust to the climate and humidity and the awful mosquitoes who are eating me alive! Other than that, the house is coming along nicely, the animals are finally adjusting and it's good to be so close to family and friends, new and old. Well, I guess I'm officially back. That feels good too because I've missed being a part of things here. Thanks for waiting! xoxo

33. Photo Fridays: That Barn Again

I’ve been photographing a farm in Lincoln, RI for the past few months. I spotted it right before September 11th and was struck by the flag that hung between the silos. I’ve continued to capture photos of it as the seasons have changed. I shot this picture this past Monday, one day [...]

34. Stacey’s M.M. Post: Carrying It All With Me

Overstuffed File Tote Originally uploaded by teachergal When I lived in Manhattan I never carried that much stuff to and from school daily. After all, I couldn’t negotiate the stairs on the subway platforms at 86th and 103rd Streets with too much in my hands. Therefore, I’m perplexed at how much stuff I take to [...]

35. Photo Fridays: Look Back, but Always Look Ahead

A view from behind Originally uploaded by teachergal I’ve come to believe that once I make a decision, I should never look back. And quite frankly, I don’t. I stick with something once I commit to it. Perhaps that attitude has carried over into my life in other ways. For instance, I’ve been photographing a [...]

36. Quality Time

I am going to be visiting one of my best girlfriends Patty in Jamestown RI this week. It's been over a year since I've seen her so I am WAY excited. These pictures are from her backyard (totally amazing). I love this place because it's so beautiful, peaceful and it's quality time spent with Patty. She is totally amazing and one of my dearest friends forever.

Here is a picture of Ryan and I about five years ago. Looking at this picture makes me smile because we spent the day catching hermit crabs and walking on the beach together. We were both very pooped out from our day.

37. Photo Fridays: Captured by this Scene

Patriotic Farm in Lincoln, RI Originally uploaded by teachergal Lincoln, RI is one of the most rustic-feeling locations I’ve encountered since I moved to Rhode Island last summer. I had the chance to buy candy at a country store for just $.65 today! The man I bought my Reese’s from was not only friendly, but [...]

38. M.M.: Newport

My first trip to Newport, RI occurred when I was seven or eight years old. It rained. The entire time. Mansion tour memories are clouded up with memories of rain. It was so rainy that my parents and I left early. Therefore, my Newport memories weren’t all that great. In 2004, [...]

39. Baby's Ghost is Mad!

Dear Jason,

My name is Aaron. My BEST friend Rain and I have experienced some paranormal stuff in Rhode Island. I swear this is real. One day at Rain's house, she took out a oiuja board and we contacted the spirits and believe us, we wish we NEVER had. We talked to a dead girl named Baby and she said she was at Rain's house. So we did some tests like we put out a tootsie roll and watched it with our own eyes move back and forth. After that we were going to visit her grave but it was raining really hard, so we went through some old photos and found a picture that had Baby in the background! We asked if it was her and it was. Now as you can imagine we were freaked out. The next day Baby started throwing and moving things around. We locked ourselves in Rain's room, but Baby kept throwing things at us and screaming like a banshee. But the weirdest thing was we couldn't figure out why she was mad. Then we realized that she was mad at us because we never visited her grave!

Still, after we saw her temper that's the last place I want to be!

>'_'< Aaron

I don't blame you one bit! I don't know if I'd venture to her grave. I might also hide the ouija board! :)

40. How To Stretch A Shoestring Budget

"I chose video because I thought it was cool that something that previously was super expensive to make could now be done by a much wider range of people."

That's what novelist Jim Munroe told us about digital film last year. Monroe is a multitasking Canadian who has produced four popular novels and built a multimedia web community over at No Media Kings.

Last week, Monroe released a low-budget digital film, one story told by seven directors. The science fiction story takes one writer's idea and turns it into a community project. Each of the seven directors working on this project brings out some new aspect of his story.

The best way to stretch a shoestring budget is to amp up the creativity. Monroe's web community came together to make this story bigger. Check it out:

"There's a new, chewable nanotechnology that lets you take photos with your eyes, cures cancer and eliminates body odour. But early adopters are realizing they're getting more than they bargained for. And once it spreads through the bloodstream, this new "miracle" technology is proving difficult to uninstall...This is the premise of the new independent sci-fi film Infest Wisely, written and co-directed by Canadian Sci-Fi writer Jim Munro."
