26. A PUZZLE for pre-schoolers and beyond

This one is for the children.... You should be able to download the image if you click on it for the full size. Then print it out and find 10 things in the mirror of this little girl that don't match the real little girl.

When you click on the image the larger illustration will appear. You can either drag it to your desktop or print it and then have some fun.

28. Valgalart/ Working with William Crutchfield

This is a Val-entine gift to all my faithful readers, guests and friends. If you have not heard of the wonderful artist William Crutchfield then shame on you but now you have so please enjoy this small and short film and you will always remember him. I was lucky enough to work with Mr. Crutchfield in 1989 when we printed this incredible puzzle to celebrate Gensler's 25 th Anniversary. Gensler is a global architecture firm that could afford to have William create the art and oversee this puzzle project and of course Jeff Wasserman of Wasserman Silk Screen Co. was able to capture the vision perfectly. This puzzle is printed on very thick acid free rag board and was cut after we did all the printing. There were a lot of colours involved and a varnish too. Quite a unique and beautiful job packaged in a nice wooden slide top box and we silkscreened Gensler on the lid in 2 colours as well. Of course I received one as a printers proof signed by this wonderful artist William Cruthchfield. You will see why I adore his work so much he creates a lot of little buildings ;)

29. Thanksgiving Food Exchange Puzzle

Okay…Last printed sample for a while (I think). And this one is appropriate in that it’s just in time for Thanksgiving (in the USA) this Thursday. Created for the November ‘09 issue of ClubHouse Jr. Magazine, this is a “what’s the difference between these two images?” kind of puzzle.  So if you have a few [...]

30. Riddle Me When, Riddle Me Why…

Gordon Thompson is Professor of Music at Skidmore College. His book, Please Please Me: Sixties British Pop, Inside Out, offers an insider’s view of the British pop-music recording industry. 9780195333183-2Below is a hint to a musical riddle with sixties British rock and pop as its subject. Be sure to check back Friday for the answer. Check out Thompson’s other riddles here. Feel free to guess the answer in the comments.

British pop musicians in the sixties transformed what had been quiet imitations of Americana into the height of hip artistic creativity. In the early sixties, the only British music to break into the American charts sounded weird (Joe Meek’s production of the Tornados performing “Telstar” in 1962) and wacky (Lonnie Donegan’s “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It’s [sic] Flavor (On the Bedpost Over Night)” in 1961). A few years later, Time declared London to be the self-evident center of the western cultural universe. Whether you considered James Bond, Twiggy, Mary Quant, or the Who, the Brits had established a place in pop culture that in the fifties we could hardly have imagined.

In another twisted attempt to obscure the obvious, I offer one more of my riddles celebrating an anniversary in sixties British pop. I look forward to your guesses. We will post a solution in two days.

Riddle me when, riddle me why; can you name the song this time?
Ole blue eyes thought this was the best, even if he named the rest.
More than nothing, a quiet plateau; some friendly help, a bass concerto.
Sthā’ī-antarā gat nahi; an unknown answer to a desperate plea.

31. Five Amazing Truths That Show Pirates are Better Than Ninjas

We have always wondered who would win in the conflict between pirates and ninjas. Here is some of the much sought after evidence that shows pirates are truly better than ninjas.

1. Water And The Earth

Pirates have a natural tendency for doing battle on water where waves keep the battle field in constant motion. This may make many pirates unsteady on stable land; however, it areas with varying elevation the pirates advantage may increase from the standard 75% of the Earth that is made up of water.

2. Pirates and Puzzles

Pirates have a very keen sense of puzzling abilities. Their incredible puzzling skills are so potent that they even created a MMORPG to recruit and train more pirates. So since many people like puzzles and pirates are good at puzzles; pirates have more appeal to everyone.

3. The Triond Test: Pirates / Ninjas

At the time this article was published Triond had over 100 pages of pirate related articles and poems. There were less than 50 pages containing poems and articles about ninjas. Some may claim that ninjas are more stealthy, of course everyone can see a wet ninja that’s in the ocean.

4. Pirates And Ninjas In Art

Even in art we can see that the ninjas are no match for the pirates. Ever since the ninjas were driven into hiding, pirates have been tackle more noble projects such as eliminating Digital Rights Management. They have also supported Anonymous in the war against Scientology through the protests called “Sea Arrgh I and II”.

34. Samples: “Family Night” Spread

Here’s a little something for ClubHouse magazine that I worked on back during my December crunch. I knew this art director liked the line art heavy so that’s what I did here. My way of doing that is to make a duplicate layer of the line work, which is on a separate layer than the [...]
