3. Content Marketing and Animation - A Successful Combination

I'll start by saying I'm not very tech savvy, so having free programs or software that allows me to look more knowledgeable than I am, is super great. 6. Who Is Ready for Fall?

You Are My Pumpkin

I don’t know about you, but this is my absolute favorite time of year.  The weather is getting cooler, football is on t.v.  and soon leaves will be falling off the trees.  We have Halloween, Thanksgiving and then the Christmas season to look forward to.  This is my favorite time of year.  I love seeing the pumpkins already in the produce departments and knowing that soon I’ll be able to decorate my home for the upcoming holiday season.

In gearing up for fall I found this great children’s book, You Are My Pumpkin, and it is FREE through 9/13/13.  A beautifully illustrated bedtime story to tell your own little pumpkins you love them. Also, a fun way to get children excited for Halloween with adorable characters, colorful scenes and a sweet story.

Make sure to pick up your copy today while this fall freebie lasts!

7. jcstearns: Visual Storytelling on Steroids This is one slide...

jcstearns:

Visual Storytelling on Steroids

This is one slide from an incredible example of how graphic journalists are mashing up audio, photography and illustration to tell complex and in-depth stories.

This piece from Luke Radl focuses on the NATO protests in Chicago last month. Matt Bors of Cartoon Movement notes in an email that this may be the first cartoon in which all the text is in HTML, therefore search engine friendly.

Click through the entire piece, listen to the audio and check out the photos here: http://www.cartoonmovement.com/icomic/38

P.S. For more great graphics journalism see Susie Cagle’s Tumblr.

8. Lesson is More, Moron Less.

I've had this idea bumping around in my head for close to ten years now. Usually it would get paraded out when I heard about someone doing something stupid... the 'less/fewer' error was pointed out to me by my wife, Vicky, some time ago. Learning from the mistake (in the spirit of the comment itself) meant that I had to stop saying it, even though I still thought it was funny.

The blackboard and 'teacher's correction' idea hit me this morning and so I quickly put this together in photoshop. The idea, like me, is bettered by Vicky's input I think.

I doubt very much that the phrase was ever original to me but It's nice when an old idea finally comes to fruition and you don't see someone else who's made something of 'your' idea before you do.

9. The Importance of Presentation

I love this simple graphic! It visually explains the difference between a good presentation and a boring one. To explain the graphic design business, for instance, the first two images are what I get from a client and the third image is what I give back to them.

10. Logo Designs

Last year, as a result of a recommendation by my buddy Dave Stokes, I was asked to produce a logo for a gaming book by a company that produces wargame figurines. Miniature Design Studio produces 28mm figurines for what I'd describe as role playing games...

The brief was to create a logo with a 'calligraphy bias'. The name of the game was 'origin'. This was the design that was settled on:

Recently, I was approached to do a further two logos. This time, in b&w and colour.

Again, there was a strong 'calligraphic' bais to the letter forms.

It's always nice to mix up things a bit and I do enjoy working on something so different from my more usual illustration work. Different challenges keep things fresh I think because coming back to drawing after these has been a real joy as well.

I did this, this afternoon before the news broke about The News of the World ceasing publication... seems sort of more appropriate now.

12. Happy St. Patty's Day!

I know I'm probably behind the times with this, but I just recently watched the movie "The Secret of Kells" and wanted to give it a shout out on St. Patrick's Day. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it, or better yet, buy it! The story is good, but the visuals are so over-the-top awesome.

It's based on the story (folklore?) of how The Book of Kells was created. The beautiful graphic nature of the images just blows me away - as I'm both a children's illustrator and graphic artist, they just give me goosebumps! I don't know much about The Book of Kells, but I've seen glimpes of the art, and it looks gorgeous!

Here are some images from the movie – aren't they awesome?

13. Refined Tattoo Design

I am touched and humbled by the comments about my design, here, on facebook, twitter and on the 2000ad Forum.

I have tidied up the design a little to make it neater and hopefully just a little more effective before Mike finally takes the plunge.

His sister, Clara, was going to be so angry. Just yesterday, he’d torn

another shirt during recess. It was his last one, the one he was supposed to

wear to the Thanksgiving program.

Once a little baby was born.  He was a healthy and happy  baby. He was loved by his mother, his father, his brother and his sister. He was loved by God.

The king of the land  at the time of Moses’ birth was a very bad man. He ordered his soldiers to take all the baby boys from their mothers and fathers.

“Olivia,” the Lord said. “This is your first work in my name…and it is important.”

“But Lord, what if I can’t do this?” began Olivia the newest Love Angel, biting her lip.

“Did I make you in my likeness? Am I your loving Heavenly Father?” asked God. “Haven’t I told you that with me anything is possible?”

”Oh no! Baby powder!” said a confused Dazzle the Wizard. ”Where did that come from?”

“But how can that be? Baby powder has been banned by the Princess,” said his assistant Snazzle. “She claims to be allergic to it.”

Dazzle shook head.

“That’s just because she wants to be the only one smelling good at the Sadie Hawkin’s Day Dance. That’s the only way she’ll snag a prince.”

“Shush,” Dazzle said, begging for Snazzle to stop talking. “My last assistant disappeared after talking like that.”

            “Barnaby!” shouted Pops.

”Pops, can I come with you?” asked Barnaby.

“Sorry. You’re too little. Elves are big and strong. But, someday,” Pops promised.
