1. SkaDAMo 2013 Day 20 (catching up)

weiner dog ski 450

“Hot Dogging”

Well the only thing about Boswell that’s hot dogging is his tubular physique. He’s much more familiar with the snow plow than any sort of shredding.

Why not schuss on over here to check out my fellow SkADaMoers at work.

2. Photos: Random Winter Scenes

Below: I took a walk yesterday on Lac St-Louis. It’s frozen over solid presently. You can see other folks and critters venturing out for a hike as well. This is also a popular area for the winter parasailers. Below: The Christmas tree in front of Bilboquet (an ice cream shop) in the Pointe Claire Village.  And [...]

3. A progression from here to there and back again...

To create this image for a series I am working on, I needed a good sketch. This time instead of using pen and pencil I did a quick sketch in the computer in Painter. I used the Conte Crayon in a soft version and did a general idea of what I wanted. This became a working print out to take to the drawing table where I traced it onto good quality paper.

Next I took some time out from the computer to just play with watercolors, colored pencils and pens to see what I wanted in the way of color. Since this is not archival paper I was able to feel at ease with whatever happened. Knowing it was going back to Painter for the final stages I could relax, experiment and not worry. Having fun is an important part of the illustration process.

With that done I scanned it all back into the computer and this was the result.

I didn't like the sizes being so even so I enlarged the human figure to create a bit more drama. I might even move the human closer to the edge or turn the figure a bit more to the viewer, but for now I like what it happening.

Next I will be finishing this in the computer with these colors and this composition in mind.

That should be ready to post in a day or two. Funny, but sometimes digital painting takes me longer than traditional painting. But either way it is always a joy!

4. A walk in the snow . . . and some book talk

Saturday was such a pretty day, a dear friend and I donned our snowshoes and tackled the hiking trail here at the campground.

I had so much fun with her,  B and I took our skiis out yesterday (alas, we only have one pair of snowshoes in this house)
Rather than travel the same boring campground roads, we got the bright idea to try the trail Sue and I used, heading along the edge of the lake, then skiing on it.

B is a little more experienced than I now, as he's been getting lessons in gym class.  Still, traveling through the woods was difficult. B's giggles echoed through the winter-day stillness when I fell down with one ski between two trees and the other tucked under me.  I thought he'd fall over himself, when I had to lay on my back, and put both skiis in the air to untangle them.

Thank goodness I'm in control of the camera!  I can't imagine the picture he would have taken.

Here he is just coming off the lake onto our point.

And here's a shot of the island where the eagle usually nests. (the flat spot, top of the trees, on the left side)

No eagle in sight at the moment, but I've seen him nearby a couple times in the last week.
I wonder if those two ice fisherman know to keep a good eye on their catch of the day?

In reading news, I've been eating up some middle grades.  Shredderman 3 and 4 by Wendelin Van Draanen and Brian Biggs are awesome!  B is soooooo hooked, he begs for extra chapters every night.  And you know what?  I give in!  Because I want to know what happens next too.   The voice is unique and sucks you right in.  I really care what happens to Nolan.

I read The Invention of Hugo Cabret in one night.  I honestly can see why it received the Caldecott.  The pictures themselves propel the story forward.  There were times when I was torn between turning the pages quickly to see what happens next, and taking the time to study those gorgeous pictures in detail.

I have a full day . . . Monday's usually are after putting the camp phone on the answering machine all weekend.  But I think I'm still going to find time to dig out those snowshoes and head out into the quietness of the winter woods.  I need time to mull my revision ideas over.
