1. Steve Martin set to turn his tweets into a book

Veteran actor and comedian Steve Martin is writing a book based on his Twitter posts, with all profits going to charity, the book publishers said on Friday. Martin announced the book via Twitter in a tweet that said “Due to absolutely no demand, soon I’m publishing a book of my tweets. Many of your replies included! All my profits to charity.”

The book will be called “The Ten, Make That Nine Habits, of Very Organized People. Make That Ten,” and will be a collection of Martin’s tweets as well as responses from followers, publishers Grand Central Publishing said in a statement. Surprisingly, the theme will also include fetish movies and porn videos.

The book is due for release in summer 2012, and all profits will go to charity. The 66-year-old “Pink Panther” actor has embraced the social networking site, building a fan base of more than 1.7 million followers. Martin’s tweets made news in December 2010 when the actor claimed to be tweeting updates from legal proceedings at jury duty, which are usually subjected to confidentiality. He later confirmed that the tweets were false and posted as a parody.

The actor’s last book, a novel called The Object of Beauty was published in 2010 and made the New York Times bestseller list. Martin is currently appearing alongside Owen Wilson and Jack Black in the comedy, The Big Year, which was released in US cinemas earlier this month

In a statement, the publisher said: "All the employees at Beautiful Books would like to thank everyone with whom we have worked over the past six years."

3. Beautiful Books facing administration

An administrator for Beautiful Books is expected to be appointed by close of business on Monday (10th October).

In a letter to authors, David Lewis, director of The Beautiful Group PLC, said the company has had cash flow difficulties, and discussions to find a buyer, or another publisher prepared to keep some or all of its titles in print and pay royalties under current contracts, have not borne fruit.

Lewis told authors that notice of intent to appoint an administrator has been given and it was likely that that would take place on Monday.

4. Book finds

I'm visiting the US right now and I'm having a ball visiting bookstores and libraries!
These are a few books that jumped out at me just because of the illustrations.

Hedgehog, Pig and Sweet Little Friend is so adorable. I have a thing for pigs. If I am doodling and not thinking about it I guarantee you a pig will pop on my sketchbook, no doubt. Lena Anderson's style is so darling. Soft and cute without being overly sweet I think. She makes sure to have tons of great details for the kid to find in the book. I love that.

Blue Bowl Down is just striking. I think the illustrations are gorgeous. Looks like cut paper but with the richest textures. The colors really pop in this book. Holly Meade did a beautiful job.

Do I need to say anything about Edwin? LOL!

6. Persephone Books: The Beautiful and the Bold

I've been somewhat crazy busy with work since returning from those few days by the sea, but I love what I do (most of the time), and more than that, I love the people I get to do my work with.

This week brought me back into touch with old friends at a client that has long felt, to me, like family. It found me laughing so hard in one interviewee's office that I almost fell off the chair; philosophizing over the phone with another about what makes for an engaged employee; and getting a second-hand look at what research (deep research) really looks like in the eyes of a high-level strategist. I talked information technology with a new CIO (boy, is she smart) and got tripped up by a certain guy that I'll call MY, who tends to read my stories much too closely and look much too hard (and sometimes not so hard) for the hilarious (to him) double entendre.

Thanks a whole lot, MY.

Yesterday, while chatting with my client's General Counsel by phone, we talked business, but we also talked books. She had, she mentioned, seen a man reading a book on a Kindle-type machine, and it had occurred to her how much she'd miss the feel and look of a paper book, if ever such a thing were to vanish.

This led her into a story about a British outfit called Persephone Books, which has dedicated itself to (and now I quote from the Persephone web site) reprinting "neglected classics by C20th (mostly women) writers. Each one in our collection of 83 books is intelligent, thought-provoking, and beautifully written, and most are ideal presents and a good choice for reading groups." There are novels, diaries, and cook books in the collection, and "all are carefully designed with a clear typeface, a dove-grey jacket, a 'fabric' endpaper and bookmark, and a preface by writers such as Penelope Fitzgerald, Nina Bawden, and Polly Toynbee." All, in other words, are beautiful books, sold mostly by catalog but also in two gorgeous-looking shops. Beautiful books, bucking a trend, and thriving.

I kept thinking all day about this gift of a conversation—about how a business client had opened a door, to me, about a book-making phenomenon I'd not have known of otherwise. How a lawyer had taught an author something new about her own profession. I kept thinking how lucky I have been, in this life, to weave in and out, across so many borders.
