1. UK food retailing and the challenge of the ‘new retail’

And yet on exactly the same day that ASDA was confirming just how bad its sales position is, Amazon announced that it would open in early 2017 another fulfilment centre – its thirteenth – in the UK. Part—but only part—of the reason why Amazon needs more capacity is due to the initial success of its Amazon Fresh food delivery business which launched in the UK in July 2016.

3. Foyles goes east to Westfield Stratford

Foyles opened its new branch in the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre this week, placing the focus on children’s literature and attracting families.

The 5,000 square foot store located on the ground floor of the centre officially opened for its first day of trade yesterday (9th November), welcoming shoppers through the door with a floor-to-ceiling pillar made out of books.

4. Fiction Uncovered gets two years’ funding

The Fiction Uncovered promotion launched earlier this year has received two more years of funding, enabling it to run through to summer 2013.

The promotion, which supports writers deserving of recognition but yet to receive media attention or a major prize, is being funded by Grants for the Arts, supported by Arts Council England and the National Lottery.

5. Sales ‘worryingly weak’ warns BRC

UK retail sale values sank 0.6% in October compared to last year, with the British Retail Consortium warning sales were "worryingly weak" in the approach to Christmas.

In October last year, sales values had risen by 0.8%. On a total basis sales were up by 1.5% in October this year, but in the same month last year sales had risen by 2.4%.

The BRC warned book sales remained "very tough and well below their year-earlier level".

6. Foyles in Westfield Stratford City to open in 10 days

Foyles' seventh branch in Westfield Stratford City shopping centre is due to open on 10th November. 

The shopping centre site, situated near the London Olympic Stadium, opened in September but Foyles delayed its own opening until next week until the relevant building work was completed. 

The store is located on the lower ground floor, next to Waitrose.

7. Amazon brings locker delivery to London

Amazon customers can now have their purchases sent to lockers in London, instead of to their homes and offices.

The company has lockers in Seattle and New York as well as the metropolitan area of London. Customers can choose to have their purchase sent to a locker instead of delivered to their homes by clicking on the ‘Search for an Amazon Locker location’ button during the checkout process.

Bath independent bookseller Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights has launched a new website, which it hopes will reach a broader audience.

The Bath-based retailer, who won Bookseller of the Year at The Bookseller Industry Awards 2011, has handpicked all the titles to sell through the site and created lists of recommendations for readers.

10. Buyers slow to come forward for independent shops

At least 22 independent bookshops are currently for sale in the UK, with the recession, the climate of the bookselling market and the refusal of banks to lend money all being cited as causes for fewer properties exchanging hands.

The bookshops on sale range in price from £10,000 for a book and card shop in Preston to £175,000 for a bookshop in North Yorkshire.

11. September sales up on August, down on 2010

Printed book sales in September rose by 10% on August, but were down 10% on last year, Nielsen BookScan data reveals. In total, £118.4m was spent on physical books in the four weeks to 1st October, an increase of £11m on August, but a decline of £14m on September 2010.

12. Foyles to close One New Change store

Foyles will close its One New Change branch when its lease expires in April 2012 to "free up resources" for its forthcoming Stratford branch and recently opened Bristol shop.

The booksellers at Foyles One New Change will be redeployed within the company. Rebecca Hart, formerly a buyer for Royal Festival Hall and St Pancras branches, will now become the manager of the new Foyles Stratford shop.

13. Jamie installed as favourite to top Xmas charts

Bookmakers William Hill have made Jamie Oliver the hot favourite to be the bestselling Christmas title.

Given the runaway success of last year's 30-Minute Meals, it is no surprise that the bookmaker has given Oliver short odds of 1/2 for Jamie's Great Britain to be the biggest seller.

The next favourite is Guinness World Records 2012 at 11/2. The celebrity with the shortest odds is former Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes, whose My Story sits at 10/1.

14. Indies plan events for Murakami launch

Independent booksellers are lining up special events for Haruki Murakami's eagerly awaited 1Q84 (Harvill Secker) with Foyles planning a midnight opening.

The book, Murakami's first since 2007's After Dark, will be published on 18th October, priced £20. It comprises volumes one and two of the story, with volume three published as a separate hardback on 25th October.

15. London indies fund new bookshop map

London's independents have joined forces to publish a map of the city's bookshops.

The London Bookshop Map features 87 indies from across the city including ones selling new, antiquarian, specialist and second hand titles. The map is free and is available in bookshops and galleries. It features a text work from the artist David Batchelor. The map will be updated every six months and rereleased with a new text artwork.

16. Indie Alliance sets up loyalty card scheme

The Independent Alliance has launched a nationwide loyalty card scheme for independent bookshops, with 114 indies signed up so far.

Love Your Indie, which will be run in association with the Guardian and Observer as part of their Books Season, has been put together by Faber marketing director Joanna Ellis and Icon Books sales and marketing director Andrew Furlow, with digital agency Bookswarm's operations director Simon Appleby.

18. Book Warehouse takes over Travel Bookshop site

20. Sales surge for Man Booker shortlist books

A D Miller and Carol Birch's novels are the big winners of the Man Booker Prize shortlist so far, with sales across the six books surging 290% by volume on last week.

The six books on the list shifted 18,496 copies for the week ending 10th September through Nielsen BookScan’s Total Consumer Market, up from 6,358.

21. WH Smith "delighted" as Westfield Stratford opens

W H Smith said it is “delighted” to have a new branch in Westfield Stratford City as the £1.45bn complex opened its doors for the first time to customers today (13th September).

The branch is based on the lower ground floor of the shopping complex next to Olympic Park in east London. A Foyles branch is also due to open in the complex in early November.

22. "Daunt model" to be applied to Waterstone’s

Waterstone's is thought to be organising the management of its stores into groups of bookshops with similar profiles, following a structure akin to that of Daunt Books.

M.d. James Daunt is thought to be splitting Waterstone's bookshops, which number about 300, into 40 smaller groups, categorising them according to size and the socio-economic status of their customers. Waterstone's is currently organised into large regional blocks, and it is not clear if the physical location of shops will play any part in the new structure.

23. Big Green Bookshop launches three for two

The Big Green Bookshop is marking the scrapping of the iconic decade-long Waterstone's three for two offer by launching its own.

For one day only (10th September) the London independent bookshop based in Wood Green will be offering its customers three books for the price of two.

However, unlike Waterstone's promotion on selected books, the indie is offering customers three for two on any of its stock, including its second hand range, which it will launch tomorrow.

24. Last bookshop in Southwold to close

The last bookshop in Southwold is closing down next week after its owner Booksource sold the lease.

Selling both second-hand and new books, independent Bookthrift was the last bookshop standing in the Suffolk town after the closure of The Orwell Bookshop and Southwold Books, which both shut up shop in the last year.

The manager at Bookthrift, Pamela O’Hara, who used to manage The Orwell Bookshop, said trade had been doing fairly well considering the economic climate and added that sales were only “slightly down” on last year.

25. OFT delays Amazon/Book Depository decision

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has pushed back its decision on whether to refer the Amazon takeover of The Book Depository to the Competition Commission.

The decision was expected to be tomorrow (2nd September) after being delayed from earlier this week. However, an OFT spokesman said a date for the decision was now "to be confirmed". He said the timetable for an announcement could change for "any number of reasons", but declined to go into specifics.
