These days almost everyone’s first destination for reading is the web, but there is a boundless amount of content competing for eyeballs. Whether you’re trying to entertain, make a point, or just update the world on your life, capturing the attention of readers can be a challenge. With a focus on the short essay form, this class will help you develop skills to create concise, informative and compelling writing to send out into the digital world. Maximum enrollment is 15 students. No pre-registration requirement. Open to writers of all levels.

What I Like
So, what do I prefer? The best way to figure that out is to read a recent edition or two of Writer's Market. (Order the 2015 Writer's Market here). Anyone familiar with the book will know that I'm looking for articles that will help freelancers find more success from a business perspective.

Previous articles have tackled queries, book proposals, taxes, record keeping, business management, and more. If you're an experienced source and can interview other sources, that is ideal. However, I'm unlikely to assign featured interviews with writers (as I tend to tackle those myself).

I'm also not interested in articles on the craft of writing. While I think those pieces are extremely valuable, they're just not a good fit for Writer's Market. If you're in doubt, go ahead and pitch it. Read the full guidelines to learn how.

What I Like

Anyone familiar with the book will know that I'm looking for articles that will help poets find more success, including articles on business, promotion, and the craft of poetry-which is one major difference between the two books.

Here's another major difference: I'm seeking previously unpublished poems! Yes, I want article pitches, but I also want poems. I will choose between 10 and 20 to publish.

So get together your article ideas, dust off your previously unpublished poems, and start submitting. But first, read the full guidelines to learn how.

Stone Court Writer-In-Residence

Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Purpose:
The Stone Court Writer-In-Residence has a number of aspects. First, it is designed to provide emerging writers the freedom, time and material support to concentrate on their creative work. Second, it is focused on bringing to the Berkshire Hills in Western Massachusetts young writers who represent diverse American voices, particularly those from other regions of the United States. Finally, it is structured to permit the writer to contribute to the community by leading a creative writing “master class” at a local independent high school and offering at least one community reading of his/her work.

Details:
The program offers two 8-12 week residencies, one beginning in September and one beginning in February. The specific length of each residency will be determined in consultation with each Resident.

The residency includes a small one bedroom apartment in Stockbridge, Mass. The apartment is on the second floor (walkup) of a quiet colonial building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stockbridge, Mass. is in western Massachusetts approximately two hours west of Boston and two and one-half hours north of New York City. It is the home of a number of museums including the Norman Rockwell Museum and Chesterwood. Nearby are a number of cultural institutions including The Mount, Tanglewood, and Jacobs Pillow.

The resident will receive a stipend in addition to lodging and utilities. Residents are responsible for their own transportation and meals. The stipend will be $250 per week for the length of the residency.

The principal responsibility of each Resident will be to spend time further developing his/her creative work. In addition, each Resident will be asked to lead 2 one hour creative writing master classes each week at the Great Barrington Waldorf High School (located within short walking distance of the residence in Stockbridge). The Great Barrington Waldorf High School provides an education for adolescents that seeks truth, develops imagination, nurtures growth, fosters responsibility, and honors inner freedom in an atmosphere of academic excellence, artistic fulfillment, openness, and mutual respect. The tentative schedule for this class is 12:30 to 1:30 on each Wednesday and Friday. But, the final schedule is subject to discussion with each Resident. The specific course focus will be based on the Resident’s background and interests.

Candidate Information:
Over time, the program hopes to attract young writers from a variety of regions of the U.S. For the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 residency, preference will be given to those writers bringing a distinctive Southern voice to their work. The program is open to those who are pursuing or have completed a graduate degree in creative writing or who have completed an undergraduate creative writing degree in the last five years.

Scarecrow Press is seeking submissions for two anthologies: 

Indiana Writers’ Consortium (IWC) is pleased to announce the extension of its annual networking dinner to include an intimate, high quality, and affordable half-day writers’ conference on October 11, 2014. The conference, which will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, in Merrillville, Indiana, will include multiple afternoon breakout sessions and be followed by a dinner and keynote address by Barbara Shoup, author of seven novels, executive director of Indiana Writers Center, associate editor of OV Books, and an associate faculty member at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.

IWC seeks proposals from individuals and groups who are at different stages in their writing careers that will represent a broad range of perspectives and experiences. Presentations may include topics such as:

· Business of publishing
· Creative writing pedagogy
· Academic and community program development
· Genre trends

Interactive individual presentation, four-to-five person panels, creative writing workshops, and round table discussions are welcome.

Write At The Farm April 13 – 15, 2014

The Writers' House at Century Farm, a creative retreat in Washington's Skagit Valley is the perfect place to create--a unique farmhouse that has been in the Skagit Valley since the dawn of the 20th century. Writers are invited to submit their personal aesthetic philosophies and manifestos for the anthology, writing exercises and prompts that have helped to kick-start their imagination, and short essays on the art of writing, reading, and being creative. I. Credos:

Writing manifestos, rules to live by, artist creeds, hand-written notes to self, aphorisms earned, and personal philosophies on what makes good writing work and why. If you have ever typed or scrawled out a manifesto, we would like to see it. Feel free to send us manifestos for creative writing that you have drawn up for yourself or for your writing group. We accept typed written credos, hand-written lists, and even collages that demonstrate your aesthetic philosophy.

II. Writing Exercises:

Is there a daily ritual you do to kickstart your imagination? Are there writing exercises and prompts that you keep on going back to or to use in class with your students? III. Essays on Writing Advice:

We are looking for essays that describe the writing process, essays on creative arts communities, salon culture, and advice on creative writing. What has helped you sustain and catalyze your writing career? What has inspired you, from reading the works of your favorite authors, experimenting with new forms, finding communities of writers, experience with social media and writing, etc.? We welcome any essays on creative writing between 5-7 pages.

Writer-in-Residence

In partnership with The Paris Review, the Standard, East Village is pleased to announce its first Writer-in-Residence.

For the first three weeks in January 2014, the Standard, East Village will provide a room free of charge to a writer who has a book under contract and needs three weeks of solitude in downtown New York City. Applications will be judged by the editors of The Paris Review and Standard Culture. All applications should be submitted electronically to:

1) A description and sample of the work-in-progress, not exceeding fifty pages total.

2) A letter from the publisher confirming that the work is under contract.

Prime Number Magazine seeks smart, well-written book reviews that explore the author’s craft and examine where the work fits within current literary trends. We are not seeking reviews that accentuate the negative. Prime Number Magazine’s on-line quarterly seeks four 400-800 word reviews and one author interview of800-1,200 words per issue. Our print annual seeks one to two review essays,between 2,000 and 3,000 words, which critically examine two or more authors.Our review essays are peer-reviewed, so please send us only your best critical works. Our print annual may also include a longer author interview with a notable writer. Though our print interviews are often conducted by our Prime Number Magazine staff, if reviewers have an interview idea, please pitch us the idea.

First Novel Contest: Emerging Writers Getaway Contest of the Whidbey Writers MFA Alumni Association.

Position Summary
· Manage the production of Quiddity's international literary journal (print and electronic components), radio program, and website, upholding all quality, calendar, and budgetary expectations; manage and advance the distribution of Quiddity's international literary journal and public-radio program through traditional and emerging venues

Essential Job Responsibilities
· Oversee the submission systems (electronic and traditional) and acquisition processes for the print journal reading series, and radio program, including the coordination of query and galley correspondence as well as reading series proposals and contests
· Coordinate and execute all editing and production schedules for the journal, radio, and website; coordinate the production schedule for the public-radio program; coordinate editorial board and staff meetings; support editorial board and staff through production processes
· Advance Quiddity's subscriber base, listener base, readership, and distribution using established and emerging resources
· Perform the layout for the journal's interior print pages and its electronic format(s), design covers and promotional materials, manage web design, and expand web content
· Supervise and mentor student interns and cultivate Quiddity's internship program, as well as other duties as assigned relative to academic affairs
