1. tropical paradise

It's been a bit quiet on the blog this summer, just imagine the radio silence like the surface of a pool, and all the fish are swarming around under water. My recent side project has been to participate in the MIID Summer School, beginner level. I love color and pattern, and this is just so much fun - and a lot more to learn!
Here is my submission for the beginner track creative brief #1 - tropical paradise
you can see the rest of the gallery with all seven pages of amazing designs (!) over here

2. patterning

Hello all, fun busy times over here. I'm working full tilt on a project I can't show, and playing with patterns (rather amateurishly by hand) for the class I'm taking. Here's a quick peek:

When my schedule clears up I am ready to learn some computer skills; until then I'll continue to muddle through :)

4. Dress Parade {Tropical Prints}

Tropical prints: the perfect subject for the hot weather we’ve been having down here in L.A.  (I’m drinking iced decaf Kona coffee too–how appropriate!)  Another reason for this post: a couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon this delightful article about tropical prints on BurdaStyle and since then I’ve wanted to share some of my Hawaii-inspired dresses with you.

People seem to either love or hate these “kitschy” and bold floral designs.  You can already guess how I feel about them–I love ‘em!  Always have, actually.  Perhaps because they remind me of my Grandma or the ’40s.  Or old men in Hawaiian shirts (so cute!).

The above dress is made from this vintage pattern, Advance #9054:

Fitting this dress…ack.  The Princess seams are flattering but, if you’re not perfectly proportioned according to the pattern, trying to get the fit right in a pain in the bum.  (At least it was for me; this dress took far longer than I would have thought due to sizing and other issues!)  Overall though I’m happy with the resulting frock (me in Maui):

I found the cotton fabric at a store on a previous trip to Oahu.  I love the violet and turquoise color combination and the huge tropical flowers.

Somehow, I misunderstood the pattern and the tabs ended up on the wrong side of the bodice…since I didn’t have enough fabric to cut a new front piece I had to cut and move the tabs over to the other side–d’oh!

Oh well.  I like the buttons anyhow (vintage bakelite with mother of pearl).

I’ve also collected a few Hawaiian dresses over the years, inexpensive smocked tubes you can find at any ABC Store (love) or The International Market Place.

Oh look, my studio is a complete disaster!  I feel like such a bad housewife sometimes.  Anyway, the dress is cute and super comfy.  And I just adore the minty green so much.  This is a typical look for me during SoCal springs and summers complete with slip on open-toed shoes and vintage bag.

Here are some swatches of the other dresses I have, in the same style:

5. When I am Quiet on Maui - Lava Flow Smoothies and Roasted Pineapple with Ice Cream

"When you are quiet, what do you hear?" - When I am Quiet on Maui, Judi Riley

It's been an unseasonably cool spring in the Bay Area. I am a warm weather kind of girl. I long for the warm sun. We can't control the weather but we can escape to a warmer place via our books.

A few years ago, when my boys were very young (not-quite-three and seven months), we spent a week in Maui. Although I don't necessarily recommend taking kids that young to Maui if you're expecting a restful and relaxing vacation, it is a favorite family memory of that time in our lives. When we want to remind the boys of our trip we watch videos and look at pictures or we read When I am Quiet on Maui, a book my husband and I brought back from a solo Maui trip a couple of years later.

Judi Riley's When I am Quiet on Maui is a peaceful book, a perfect reflection of the laid back island lifestyle. The first two pages, in fact, are just two questions (one per page) on a white background: "When you are quiet, what do you hear? When you are still, what do you feel?" With this we are brought into the book, which takes us through a child's day on the island of Maui. We learn about the island through sights and sounds. Each spread shows an illustration on the left with a single statement on the opposite page--a painting of koi and plumeria flowers in a pond is accompanied by, "When I am quiet in Wailea long before lunch, I hear the plumeria cascade into the koi pond." This is not a book to turn to if you're looking for excitement or a story where something happens. It is more like poetry, calm meditations just right for settling into a calm state of mind (perhaps right before naptime). It reminds us of the beauty of nature (found in a specific place) and the importance of slowing down and taking note of the world around us. It also introduces Hawaiian vocabulary, with proper pronunciations and definitions in footnotes at the bottom of the pages. (Crucial for parents who stumble over the word humuhumunukunukuapua'a.)

We made two different treats to get us into the Hawaiian spirit (they also went well with our Lost series finale viewing after the boys were in bed).

Lava Flow Smoothies

Ingredients:
  • 2 oz. coconut cream
  • 2 oz. unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 4 large strawberries (or handful of frozen strawberries)
  • 1 small, ripe banana
  • ice
Additional equipment: Blender, paper umbrella (optional)

1. Puree the strawberries in blender.

2. Pour strawberry puree in glass.

3. Puree pineapple juice, coconut cream and banana in blender with crushed ice. Blend until smooth.

4. Pour pineapple/coconut/banana mixture into glass. The strawberry puree should rise to the top, like a lava flow.

6. Fridayness

I was feeling inspired yesterday and created this fun illustration. My SIL has a collection of cobalt blue dishes and vases. My brother and SIL live in tropical weather and love to fish and also collect decor with a tropical feel to it. For a larger image visit here. The photos may take a moment to load, then just mouse over the top left thumbnail. Have an awesome Friday!
