Synopsis: As one young boy struggles to come to terms with his father’s beliefs and actions towards slaves, he pulls from deep within his soul, courage and determination he never knew existed. Will David’s attempts to save Jenkins come to fruition or does David get caught red handed in defying his Pa?
Excerpt: “David crept into the barn. His first attempts to help Jenkins hadn’t gone well. Jenkins cringed when he saw David. Over time, David gained Jenkins’ trust with promises that he was not there to harm him, but to help. Tonight the wounds from the whip were worse than ever. The welts looked as if caterpillars were stuck under the skin.”

I'm delighted you have visited today to learn about the Story Behind my historical fiction early reader children's book based on the Underground Railroad, The Golden Pathway. I hope you enjoy the adventure...
I have always had a fascination for American History and living in the historical hamlet of Tappan, New York is a constant reminder of the rich history of our country. And when the opportunity arose at the end of the Institute of Children’s Literature Writing for Children and Teenagers course to create an outline for a book idea I naturally gravitated toward the Underground Railroad.
I initially visited my local library and researched both children’s and adult books on the Underground Railroad. The wealth of information was endless, but once I focused on the central character being the son of a slave owner the story flowed. From start to finish after research it took about a year to edit and fine tune the manuscript to feel confident enough to submit to the Writer’s Digest Writing Competition. After placing 12th in the Children’s/Young Adult category I then met Lynda Burch of Guardian Angel Publishing and submitted. After several more edits and expansion of the story, Ms. Burch offered me my first children’s book contract, adding about another two years to the process. It may seem like a long time, but it’s all worth it.

In the ever changing technology landscape, it's imperative to have a web presence no matter the line of work you are in. Colette Politzer, Library Media Specialist recently contacted me through my website to invite me to participate in The 29th Annual Rockland Read-In during the week of February 11th.
I'm delighted to be visiting Chestnut Ridge Middle School this morning. During my visit I will share The Golden Pathway book trailer, read an excerpt, and engage in what I'm sure will be a lively discussion of what inspires each of us to write.
An extra shout out and huge thank you goes to my wonderful boss...who encouraged me to never turn down an opportunity to share my children's books (even though we are in the midst of two huge events for him this week). Thanks Thomas!

Donna McDine is an award-winning children’s author, Honorable Mention in the 77th and two Honorable Mentions in the 78th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competitions.
Donna’s stories and features have been published in many print and online publications and her interest in American History resulted in writing and publishing The Golden Pathway. Donna has two more books under contract with Guardian Angel Publishing, The Hockey Agony and Powder Monkey or Boy. She writes, moms and is the Publicist Intern for The National Writing for Children Center and the Children’s Writers’ Coaching Club from her home in the historical hamlet Tappan, NY. McDine is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators and Musing Our Children.
"He clamped his hands over his ears, but it didn’t block the high-pitched screams from the barn. He knew they would stop. They always did. Yet the silence scared David even more, knowing Pa would seek a new victim next time."
Have you ever gone against your family to do what's right?
In this her first historical story picture book, The Golden Pathway, Donna McDine explores the ethical dilemma of a young boy named David as he turns against his father in order to follow his own sense of justice.
Set during the time of the civil war, David's story begins one night when he hears his father give yet another cruel beating to Jenkins, a 16-year old slave. Though David knows his duty is to obey his Pa, his conscience tells him that what his Pa is doing is plain wrong. Scared, yet filled with bravery and compassion, David decides to finally put a stop to it and free the teen slave. Will he succeed?
The Golden Pathway is an engrossing, moving story that celebrates freedom and courage. It is suspenseful; it kept me wondering what the outcome would be, and how a little boy would be able to free a slave. Not an easy task! The language flows beautifully, with just the right balance of narration, description and dialogue. The author also uses sensory details to bring the tale to live. The illustrations by Oregonian artist K.C. Snider are beautiful and evocative, bring David's world to life. I especially liked the emotion conveyed in most of the artwork, especially the face expressions of David and Jenkins. This is also a touching story of friendship.
The book, aimed at kids 8-12, is perfect for class discussions about slavery, the Civil War, and the Underground Railroad. It's also one parents should read to their kids. I would feel very comfortable reading this book to kids as young as 6 or 7. It's never to early to teach kids about justice and compassion.

Thanks so much for the great review of Donna's book and for adding the trailer to your post. I'm glad you liked The Golden Pathway.
I'm a Civil War buff, so I knew I would be interested in it. I'm hoping that our schools pick this up because it would help kids understand this time in our history and also allow them to see how one determined person can have an impact on things.
Thank you for your absolutely wonderful book review. I'm thrilled you enjoyed The Golden Pathway. K.C. Snider grabbed the true essence of David and Jenkins fully.
My heartfelt appreciation for your time and interest.
A wonderful review of this book. The reader is captivated by the very first page. Great addition to the school aged child's understanding of this part of history. Thanks for sharing.
Great blog! I can't wait to see more of it. Stopping by and following from MBC. Would love if you'd check out mine too, http://onceuponbaby.blogspot.com/
Donna McDine’s book The Golden Pathway is a poignant tale of sorrow and abuse and how one boy rises above it all to stay true to his humanity.
Set in the time of slavery in the South, young David witnesses cruelty on a daily basis. Despite enormous risk to himself, he feels compelled to help a young slave named Jenkins.
Learning of a secret society that helps slaves to escape, David sets his plan in motion. But will it be in time?
The Golden Pathway is a wonderfully-written children’s book that accurately reflects the thoughts and actions of the time period. A must read for any student of history.
