Often times I wonder where authors come up with their stories and my next several posts will be about where I come up with my ideas. Today, I'm profiling A Sandy Grave...
Beyond the enjoyment of a beach vacation I never gave much thought to marine life. Sure we’ve gone on the typical whale or dolphin watching tours and were always delighted to see these creatures come up out of the ocean. But I never truly paid attention to what some humans do to marine life, until the day I read a news article about a dead whale that washed up on shore of a California beach. What fascinated me about this article was the police needed to guard the whale, until the local marine biology institute could arrive to determine what the whale died from. The reasoning for guarding astounded me. Apparently, poachers would take the opportunity to steal the whale’s teeth to sell for artists to create scrimshaw on the teeth and then sell for a profit.
This particular article pumped up my creative writing juices and before I knew it, I was researching marine biology, Endangered Species Act, and the Mammal Protection Act. Then came the creation of the fictional storyline and characters. Once I knew how I wanted the characters to be instrumental in propelling the story along with my research, the two blended into a beach adventure with a learning aspect without preaching to the reader. Hence, A Sandy Grave was born. The title was created from points in the article and research.

On Friday evening, June 20th I had the distinct honor and privilege to attend The Beach Book Festival 2014 awards ceremony in NYC held at The Grolier Club. Upon arrival (along with my parents… hubby stayed home to man the fort while our sixteen year old hosted a surprise birthday party for 20. Thanks Tom, for making sure I could attend the awards ceremony without concern!) we were immediately welcomed by Bruce Haring and his staff.

The electricity in the air was captivating from the moment we entered The Exhibition Hall. Guitar music played softly in the background while the award recipients mingled along with their guests and celebrated with appetizers and drinks, setting the tone for an amazing evening. The Grolier Club is one of the world's greatest libraries for rare documents, so to be amongst such history was humbling to say the least.

The evening proceeded with a warm welcome by Bruce Haring and continued on with exceptional speeches. Each author gave inspiring speeches that will stay long with me.

Leah is eager to catch up with her friends Nicole and Hayley at the beach this summer. When a dead whale washes up on shore and some mysterious men start hanging around, the girls aren’t quite sure how they can help.

But their fun is interrupted by a dead whale washing up on shore and some mysterious men hanging around. The girls then learn about the illegal practice of poaching and Leah is concerned those men hanging around the beach are up to no good. There must be something the girls can do to help out.
A book like this empowers children to make a difference while educating them about their world in a fun way. The delightful illustrations by Julie Hammond are the perfect complement to McDine’s story. This is a quick read that will leave a lasting impression.
