Cate Blanchett has signed on to star in a theatrical production of Anton Chekhov’s The Present. In the past, the two-time Academy Award winner (pictured, via) has acted in several literary-themed movies including the Lord of the Rings franchise, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Cinderella.

Here’s more from The New York Times: “The Present, also known as Platonov, centers on Anna Petrovna, who is celebrating her 40th birthday at her summer home in the country. She holds a party that includes uncomfortably mismatched collection of characters. Chekhov wrote it as a young medical student in the 1880s but it went nowhere and the playwright put it aside. It was unearthed in a Moscow bank vault in 1920, 16 years after his death.”

Deadline reports this play will mark Blanchett’s debut on Broadway. Starring alongside her will be Richard Roxburgh. Andrew Upton, Blanchett’s husband, adapted Chekhov’s piece. John Crowley, the director behind the Oscar-nominated film Brooklyn, has agreed to take the helm on this project. At this point in time, neither the New York City-based venue nor the opening date have been announced. (via Theater Mania)

Todd Haynes' new film Carol is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s semi-autobiographical novel The Price of Salt, first published in 1952 under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. Daring for its time, the novel depicts a passionate lesbian romance between Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), a well-off middle-aged New Jersey housewife divorcing her husband, and nineteen-year-old Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), who works as a department store salesclerk.

Disney has unleashed a new trailer the live-action Cinderella film adaptation. Thus far, it has drawn more than 50,000 ‘likes” on Facebook.

Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale are the latest actors to sign on to star in Warner Bros.’ live action film adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.

The two actors will star alongside Naomie Harris, Tom Hollander, Eddie Marsan and Peter Mullan in the Andy Serkis-directed film.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop: “Bale will voice Bagheera, a fearsome panther, both of whom save Mowgli from the killer tiger Shere Khan (Cumberbatch) and teach him the law of the jungle. Blanchett will voice Kaa, a sinister python who is also a friend to Mowgli, while Hollander will play Tabaqui, the jackal who is an underling of Shere Khan.”

Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson discussed his upcoming film adaptation of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at San Diego Comic-Con.

Since then, rumors have swirled that Jackson had shot enough footage to turn J.R.R. Tolkein‘s novel into a trilogy. Do you think the novel could work as a trilogy?

Here’s more from Deadline: “On the trilogy possibility, I’m told that while Jackson shot plenty of extra footage, he has already stretched a single book into two movies. His DVD editions of The Lord of the Rings were so compellingly loaded with extended cuts of each film—they actually filled in storytelling gaps for hard core fans–that my bet is he indulges those fans that way again, even though no final decision has yet been made.”

Release dates have been announced for the Peter Jackson‘s two Hobbit movies.

According to Variety, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will come out on December 14, 2012 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit theaters on December 13, 2013. The video embedded above features a tour of The Hobbit‘s set.

Actor Elijah Wood will return to Middle Earth in the two-part film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Hobbit.

Deadline New York reported: “Wood is confirmed to star in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit to be shot in New Zealand. In addition, he has signed on to play ‘Ben Gunn’ in Stewart Harcourt’s adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island along side Eddie Izzard.”

Besides Wood (pictured, via), other castmates returning from Lord of the Rings include: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis as Gollum. At the moment, Orlando Bloom is rumored to be considering his return as Legolas.
