1. Essence Breaking Dawn Pt 2 Swatches

Hello, friends! Today I am very excited to show you the Essence Breaking Dawn Part 2 nail polish swatches. I love nail polish and makeup and am a total sucker when movie and book theme collections come out. Essence came out with a whole line for Breaking Dawn Pt 2. I picked up all of the nail polishes and, because I love you guys, a few extra items for a blog giveaway. If you want more information on the collection, check out the Essence website here. Beware that this post is pretty pic heavy. And apologies if I go into too much nail polish speak, but I am sure you understand. :)

Alice Had A Vision

First up is Alice Had A Vision, a really pretty glass fleck glitter. It has a purple base with lots of pretty blue and purple glitter. This is two coats. It was a bit sheer and not pretty on the first coat but the second coat evened it out.

Jacob's Protection

Next up we have Jacob's Protection. Let me just say that these names really crack me up. Anyway, this one is similar to Alice Had A Vision except that it's a blue/black base with blue glitter. Again, it was bit murky and sheer on the first coat but the second made it all better.

Edward's Love

Edward's Love is another glass fleck glitter with a black base and grey/silver glitter. It also seems to have a little bit of a gold cast. Again, this is two coats.

A Piece Of Forever

The last polish in the collection is A Piece of Forever. I guess a piece of forever looks like a frosty gold. This was probably my least favorite out of all of them. It's a bit too warm for my liking and too frosty. On the right skin tone it might look good but it wasn't my cup of tea. This is two coats.

Overall I thought the polishes were worth the $2 each I spent on them. The glitters were a little thick but they were workable. A little thinner might make them easier to apply. I enjoyed the glitters. None of them are super unique though Alice Had A Vision is quite pretty and probably my favorite out of this collection. And I got a kick out of the Breaking Dawn factor. I think this collection was only available Ulta and I really doubt you'll be able to find it anymore. But we're going to hook you up with a giveaway very soon.

Thanks for meandering with me down nail polish lane. For more pics of these polishes, go to our Facebook album.  Does anyone else love themed collections as much as me?

2. Melissa Rosenberg Talks about Adapting ‘Breaking Dawn’

Twihards around the world will watch The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 this weekend. In the latest installment of the blockbuster series, fans can expect to see a dramatic vampire wedding and eventful honeymoon.

We caught up with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to talk about writing scripts and the adaptation process. The highlights follow below…

Q: Describe the writing process when you are charged with adapting a book for a script versus writing an original script.
A: Each comes with its own challenges, but nothing is more difficult than starting with a blank page, as a writer does with an original project. I had the good fortune to start with an already fully fleshed out universe and mythology. But an adaptation comes with its own challenges: Honing a 500 page novel into a 110 page script. Externalizing very internal character arcs. Not pissing off the millions of fans around the world who don’t understand, or frankly care, that a book and a movie are very different animals, and that one can’t simply transfer the entire text into screenplay format and shoot it.

3. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Giveaway

Happy Breaking Dawn release day! Love it or hate it, you probably have an opinion about Breaking Dawn. Personally, it was my least favorite book out of the four and I think it's ridiculous that they've broken it up into two films. However, it's a tradition among my friends to get a group together to see the movies when they're released. I don't think they're great movies but they're fun and I always have a good time seeing them with my friends. And no, I do not have midnight tickets. We are going Sunday afternoon and I am really looking forward to it.

So in the spirit of fun, we here at RNSL are hosting a Breaking Dawn Giveaway. One lucky winner will get the following goodies:

Breaking Dawn Hardcover
Twilight Deluxe CD soundtrack album
New Moon soundtrack album
Eclipse soundtrack album
Breaking Dawn soundtrack album

Another two winners will be picked to get Breaking Dawn CDs. That's 3 winners total. Following is not required though it's always appreciated. All you have to do is leave a comment with whether or not you love or hate Breaking Dawn and why.  Sorry, only open to U.S. residents. Good luck!

5. Trestle's Coming Through

Over the next several months, you are going to see me talking a lot about some other authors I am affiliated with through Trestle Press.

These authors come from many different genres, but they all have one thing in common: We want you to read and enjoy what you are reading!

I think what I'll do is give you a nice overview of several authors here. Then for the rest of the week, I will get in depth through some of my different social sites.

Without further ado:

Robert Ford is the author of The World of Hek, a supernatural series, and Curse of the Translucent Monster.

Wenona Hulsey offers paranormal YA with Burden of Blood.

Sam Lang, another horror author, has the Reprisal series and looks to be starting a zombie collaboration called Severed.

S. L. Schmitz breathes new life into Bram Stoker's Dracula with Mina's Daughter, a steampunk series.

These are the authors and that was only a sampling of what they offer. Watch for more posts and tidbits all week.

7. Showcase #3

Recently, I was invited to join the group Writers of the South (USA). It is a small, but enthusiastic group of authors in every type of genre. The group is aimed at supporting and promoting authors in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.

As we grow, we plan to take several opportunities to showcase the varied and talented people in the group. We will hit it hard over the next couple of days, hopefully gaining some new exposure and introducing you to writings you might not have found otherwise. Looking at the group, there is something for everyone, so be sure to check these posts every day.  The plan is to do this again in a few months.

Today, the spotlight shines on Corine A. Belle (aka Sandy Theriot)

Corine says, "Welcome To My Legend! I am an apiring author who loves to write YA in the supernatural/romance/thriller/humor. I welcome negative and postive feedback. It will be taken seriously and without prejudice. Thank you so much for your support!!!"

Sandy has been writing from personal experiences since she was a teen. More recently, her work has taken a turn with inspiration from Stephanie Meyers' Twilight Saga. Check out her YA supernatural writing at the link above!

9. How to Use Wordle with Your Favorite Books

Wordle: The Jungle Book by Rudyard KiplingWordle is a fun web tool that allows people to make artistic text collages or  “word clouds” from any text.

Here’s more from the site: “Wordle is a toy for generating ‘word clouds’ from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.”

This GalleyCat contributor took eBookNewser’s “Free eBook of the Day” (Rudyard Kipling‘s The Jungle Book) and created a word cloud–the image is embedded above. Other literary projects on Wordle include the U.S. Constitution, John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’sI Have a Dream” speech, and Stephenie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn.

15. Meyer's BREAKING DAWN...

Meyer's BREAKING DAWN...

... is CRACKING ME UP and GROSSING ME OUT.

I'm halfway through, laughing out loud in some parts. Is this a comedy?! A bad one, if that!!! It is stunningly in its ludicrous dialogue and gratuitously bloody scenes.

I'm making notes on the parts about the Quileute's and the "treaty" between the vampires and the Quileute's --- there's interesting things to note about that, but my gosh!!! It is so..... STUPID.

Stop reading this if you're worried about spoilers.

During the birth, Bella vomits a fountain of blood. Jacob's nickname for the "little monster" is Nessie. Bella is furious that he nicknamed her after the Loch Ness Monster.

I am so glad I did not pay full price for this book. It's a joke! I know her readers were disappointed. I'll have to see why once I finish the book.

16. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

So, let's be casual here for a minute. What did you think about Breaking Dawn, the latest installment in the Twilight Saga? Did you read it?

There will be spoilers here, so you know, GO AWAY if you don't want to see them. Consider yourself warned.

Let me first remind you that I am one of Stephenie Meyer's biggest fans. I obsessed over Twilight which is reviewed here. I thoroughly enjoyed New Moon, reading it almost as obsessively...although I truly felt the torture Bella was going through being separated from Edward for so long. Eclipse wasn't quite clean read material, but kept me going on the series.

I was one of the thousands of people at Borders on the night of August 1st. I waited in line for nearly three hours before finally holding my very own copy of Breaking Dawn.

And...I enjoyed it...but I'll be the first to admit it was out-there and a bit too wacky at times. I didn't read it obsessively. I claimed that I was trying to be a normal human and not lock myself up for three days, but the truth is, I didn't find it as compelling as the others.

The first three Twilight books drew me in with their promise of passionate, forbidden love. In Breaking Dawn, love is no longer forbidden. It comes easily for Edward and Bella.

Of course, that doesn't mean Stephenie Meyer wrote a 750 page book without conflict. Plenty happens. It just isn't pulling Edward and Bella's epic love apart.

(Big spoiler here...) The whole pregnant thing was so weird. Maybe because I am pregnant and that is just not how pregnancy works. Then, as if it couldn't get weirder, Jacob imprinted on the baby! I think I screamed out loud when I read that part.

Finally, Meyer built up for the greatest battle scene yet in the Twilight books and then just let it fizzle out without an ounce of vamp action. I admit, though I'm into the series for the mushiness, I was disappointed not to see a battle.

Anyway, I know there are a lot of mixed reactions on-line. Maybe we have built the series up so much in our hearts that nothing would satisfy.

I liked the book. I'd still recommend the series to upper YA and adults. As for being clean read material, Breaking Dawn does include a honeymoon. It gets a bit steamy as it has before, but it certainly doesn't go into detail. I wouldn't recommend this book to young teens, though. It's just too mature.

Let me know what you think. On Goodreads, I gave Twilight 5 stars, New Moon and Eclipse got 4, and Breaking Dawn will have 3.

17. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

I've been avoiding writing about Breaking Dawn because I was REALLY REALLY trying to think of something nice to say. Well, I don't have anything nice to say. Icky Icky Poo Poo.

Luckily, Elizabeth Hand is more mature than me and summed up the series, along with a review of Breaking Dawn in The Washington Post. Warning...it contains spoilers, so don't read her review if you want to suffer through the torture of reading Breaking Dawn on your own. I wholeheartedly agree with her, especially when she says, "The most devoted readers will no doubt try to make excuses for this botched novel, but Meyer has put a stake through the heart of her own beloved creation."

Alright, devoted readers. What's your excuse?

18. Breaking Dawn creates excitement and readers

I love it when a book gets people excited about reading. Breaking Dawn and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series has done that, similarly the way Rowling’s Harry Potter has, only for teens. Adults, too. Breaking Dawn was released on Saturday at midnight, and there were celebrations and creative release parties around the country.

Wynter Holden reported in the Phoenix New Times blog about a Breaking Dawn event at the Changing Hands Bookstore: “The room pulses with energy. The evening’s long-awaited final act begins exactly as the clock chimes 12. The crowd erupts in a climax of a scream, and I’m caught in a torrent of sweaty young bodies elbowing towards the stage at the back of the room.” Then, at the end of the night, “As I’m walking to my car at 12:20 a.m., I spot a van full of kids with flashlights and open books. To my left, there’s a woman my age in a silver Toyota — motor running, air-conditioning on full blast — furiously scanning the first few pages.”

Changing Hands Bookstore had some great ideas for the release of the book, including readers making themed t-shirts, getting sequined love bites on their necks, and a blood drive. That sounds like fun to me–fun, and great book promotion.

I love that a book created such excitement in readers. Whether or not you like the Twilight series, I hope you agree that it’s created a good thing, getting many people caring about a book so intensely.

New York Times quoted teen Katie Herzer, as saying, “We got really sad when Harry Potter was over. It’s great to find a new series we can read and maybe grow old with.” And there is the passion and excitement for a book that thrills me.

Breaking Dawn sold more than 1.3 million copies in just one day–August 2, the release day. Wow!

I loved Twilight, though I couldn’t get into the second book. I’ll try again. Either way, I’m happy there are so many excited readers out there–especially teen readers. That’s a good thing.

20. A truly lucky find at Books a Million

I had totally planned on going to a Breaking Dawn party last night, but after storms and a power outage, I couldn't make it. So, I finally got out the door around 1pm today and hurried over to Books a Million. The beautiful BD display rack was...empty. Yeah. Not one copy anywhere. People were asking the sales girls and guys, "Where is BD? Do you have one in the back room?" Of course, the answer was no. Behind the counter, was a stack of probably twenty glorious copies with a big sign for VOUCHERS ONLY. Curses!!

I whined, moped and stomped around the store. I moodily browsed the YA section and was temporarily happy when I saw so many books of friends. Yay, guys! Okay, in all honesty, I was browsing the aisle just in case BD had been shelved. But yeah, you know the answer to that question.

I was about to leave and go home to sulk when I decided to go where Take the Reins will be shelved next year. On the shelf where the books for authors with the last name starting with "D," I saw something that made me gasp. A shiny, beautiful copy of BREAKING DAWN! OMG!

I grabbed it before anyone else could find it and wrapped my arms around it! The check out girl was almost as excited as I was since she told me after last night's party and people lined up all night, there were supposed to be no copies anywhere in the store. She made her I had BD stickers and an awesome BD pin before practically ushering me out of the store.

I'm glad I wasn't driving home because the "Don't read and drive" warning might not have been enough. :)

So, I'm on page 300 or so and am going to read all weekend. I am a happy girl.

If you post here, please, no spoilers! Thank you! :)

21. Feeling Unreal: Trisha’s Experience

medical-mondays.jpg

This morning we posted an original article by Jeffrey Abugel, co-author with Daphne Simeon, MD, of Feeling Unreal: Depersonalization Disorder and the Loss of the Self. This afternoon we have an excerpt from their book which will hopefully help you better understand Depersonalization Disorder. Below is Trisha’s story, just one of many varied experiences with Depersonalization Disorder.

Trisha was a 21-year-old college junior majoring in fine arts at a large state university. She was bright, attractive, ambitious, and sociable. She describes her upbringing as happy and uneventful. She was the second of four children raised in a small Midwestern town, and her parents were still happily married. She got along well with both of them and was particularly close to her sister Jane, who was 2 years younger. Trisha always did well in school, was athletic, and had many friends. (more…)

22. Pot Politics: On Vaporizing

medical-mondays.jpg
Rebecca OUP-US

Earlier today we had a post from the other side of the ocean about their new smoking ban. In keeping with the smoking theme, we have Mitch Earleywine author of Pot Politics, Mind-Altering Drugs and Understanding Marijuana writing for us today. While we don’t endorse the use of illegal substances we do think Earleywine’s point is important, that there are ways less harmful than smoking to use marijuana. Earleywine, an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York has also worked for 14 years on the faculty at the University of Southern California.  He is a leading researcher in psychology and addictions. To learn more keep reading.

Arguments about recreational and medical use of marijuana often turn to discussions about the health of the lungs. Inhaling particles, toxic gases, and heat is never a great idea, but people who smoke marijuana (but not cigarettes) rarely experience serious lung problems. Theoretically, however, the potential for marijuana-induced pulmonary troubles seems high. As public service announcements consistently remind Americans, the smoke from the tobacco and marijuana plants are very comparable. Some carcinogens and irritants are more concentrated in marijuana smoke than tobacco smoke. In addition, many marijuana users inhale the smoke deeply and hold their hits for long durations, giving tars and other toxins a greater chance to deposit on lung tissue (For reviews, see Earleywine, 2005; Iversen, 2000). (more…)
