8. Postcard

(front)

Hello there! Long time no see, huh? ;o)

Here is the finished postcard as promised (click here if you'd like to see the previous posts). I decided to simplify and kept only three characters on the boat. My initial idea had two more kids but I realized they would be lost in the format of a postcard and felt too crowded.

I like how it turned out. It's an adventure and certainly raises questions. Why are they on a boat? An elephant is with them, maybe they come from far away places... and that little penguin, where is he going? Why is he packed? He looks very determined doesn't he? Like he has a plan.

Hmm.. maybe he does... ;o)

The truth is I don't have an answer to all those questions since this is not a story I wrote but more like an image that popped in my head. But I don't think it matters for a postcard. The idea is that it feels like a whole story, sparks an interest and makes you want to know more, well at least I think it does.

Kids' minds are like this. There are no rules or explanations. Everything goes..
That's one of my favorite things about this field.. anything can happen in children's books! :o)

9. What I'm Working On

I'm doing that 'thing' where I'm juggling lots of little things at once:

A few spot illustrations for a dummy
Postcard ideas
An IF sketch
Thumbnails for a new picture book dummy
Editing manuscripts

When I'm feeling a little scattered, I think this is the best way for me to be productive. I'm not committing
100% to any one thing, but making progress and good use of my time.

Also, I'm completely in love with the mouth/nose shapes on the blue guy in the top right. Swoon! Admit it, we're all selfishly, egotistically, in LOVE with our work from time to time. It makes up for the copious self-loathing we all do.

P.S. Have you seen the new, much improved Illustration Friday website? No? Go now.

10. Away they go

My postcards arrived. I’m very pleased with the job GotPrint did on them.

While waiting… I’ve been updating my mailing list, so… batta boom, batta bing…. they are out the door and headed to their prospective clients.

As always, they were mailed with the usual good luck mojo send off dance at the post office and a fond farewell to these postcards….. wadda ya mean …”it’s not usual?” ;)

Anyway, goodbye postcards. I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed… and that’s one to check off the list of goals!

Cheerio!

Roberta

11. Books for a Better Life

Monday came round quick this week. (Only 6 days since the last one). Thanksgiving is thundering toward us totally out of control, no doubt bringing snow and Christmas in it's wake. I am looking at my things-I-want-to-do-before-the-end-of-the-year list, and wondering just how many are achievable.

High on my list is to send another publisher's mail-out. This time I have a postcard featuring my 'Dandelion Fairy'. I would love to work up a dummy around her adventures with her little bunny ... but I also have other dummies that need work - and they have been waiting a good while for some attention. So 'Dandelion Fairy' will be scribbled on a post it note and stuck up on the window frame with the other titles.

Let me know if you would like a postcard! Email your address to [email protected] .

Exciting news this week for Daniel Stefanski, Freespirit Publishing and the book I illustrated earlier this year 'How to Talk to an Autistic Kid.' It's a finalist in the relationship category of 'Books for a Better Life', an award sponsored by The Southern New York Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. The award ceremony is in March at The New York Times Centre. Very much hoping to go and hoping that the book wins! What an awesome thing this would be for Daniel Stefanski, who is 15 and suffers from autism. Fingers Crossed please.

The rest of this week is going to be busy. Putting to bed 'The Naughty Grandmother' for a private client, and working on an education pdf project for 'Reading A-Z'. Friday I am goign on an OUTING, but can't tell you where yet. Saturday I am doing signing at Pittsfield Library, Maine with 'All Star Cheerleaders: Tick Tock, Taylor.' Fun!

Let's hope my computer behaves ... complete rebuild this weekend, caused by a power unit failure and possible dodgy memory chip. I did, however, learn a valuable lesson when the power unit messed up my hard drive a couple of weeks ago ... now have a server I back up to every night. Thank goodness 'im indoors is a techie!

Toodles and thanks for popping in!

Hazel

My new spring postcard mailer. I printed these a few weeks ago but now with the spring peepers going to town outside my window, it seems very appropriate.

14. New Promo Piece - Theme: Playtime

Technology allows you to do everything quicker and more efficiently, including screwing up!

This is a piece that I did for the new Illustration for Kids postcard. I was thinking about changing some of the colors, but I inadvertently overwrote the original file that had all the Photoshop layers. DOH!

15. Have you send out your Valentines yet?

I've been a bit obsessed with the ABCs lately. After such great feedback and response from the Animal ABCs and Christmas ABCs, I took on the challenge to do Valentine's day. With a little help from my husband ("Q" and "Z" was quite tricky), it was fun coming up with this and using a distinctive vintage color palette, thanks again to colourlovers.com.

16. Christmas postcard

Just sent this off to the printers! This will be my Christmas postcard. I've been thinking about what I wanted to do for this year. Since I got so many nice comments about the animal ABCs, I wonder if I can continue it onto other themes.

There are some tricky letters but thats the fun part, figure it out. Even though I felt like I'm cheating a little with the letter Z being "zzzz," I'm pretty happy with the end result.

I'm already thinking about other themes already :-)

18. Fall Post card mailing... coming soon

I decided to create a post card for my fall mailing based on the acrylic painting I made for the NYC library exhibit. I'll try to post a finish in a few days. *:)  On the back of the card I will place the rules for
"how to ride a dragon ~ 101."

19. Summer Postcard Week!

© Alicia Padrón 2010

This image popped in my head while walking one morning. I was going to use another illustration that I thought would fit the theme very well but when I saw these two in my head I just had to start working on them as soon as I got home.

I adore Daddy and me and Mommy and me type of books. I'd love to get to illustrate one of them. There is something so special about that relationship. I don't know if it's because my kids are growing too fast but I just want to hold on to those moments. :o)

Someone on twitter asked us if we would share our process sometime so here is little about how I created this piece:

I sketched it my sketchbook at a smaller size. I tend to work small. Then thanks to the magic of photoshop I scan my sketch and make it the size I want. I also make sure to turn up the contrast a lot on the sketch so it prints dark, then it is easier to trace that way. I then print it and trace it on to my paper. In this case I used 140 lb hot pressed Arches watercolor paper.

When I am tracing on my light box I like to redraw rather than trace. That is why I usually leave my initial sketches very loose and I don't like to rework them. Just because I think something valuable is lost if reworking them too much.

Once the drawing is transfered, I first start painting the background. In this case the sky and water went on first. I used the wet on wet technique for this. I then painted the bears and the grass was the last thing. When the painting is completely dry I then shade with a graphite pencil on the areas needed.<

21. Illustration For Kids

I belong to a group called Illustration For Kids. Most freelance illustrators I know work out of their homes which is great when you don't feel like showering but it can also pretty lonely. Even if you have people around you, rarely are those folks fellow illustrator that you can talk shop with. So several years ago, seven of us got together and started an internet group called Illustration for Kids to offer each other support and company.

I think one of our best ideas was to pool our money and our mailing lists and do quarterly group postcards mailings. I'm very bad about remember to advertise and these quarterly postcards have been great for me. When there are 6 other people involved it isn't so easy to put postcard mailings off to the side. Here's our latest postcard that went out last week. Below is a closeup of my contribution. Visit the IFK blog for more info about the other artist's work.

And a thank you to Lori West at Curledupbooks.com for nice review of The Great Matzoh Hunt.

Thats about it around here. I've been taking a slight break from Facebook and Twitter, and giving myself more time for personal projects. Also I need to start doing some research on my upcoming trip to Tokyo. I can't wait!
