4. Link Love: PiBoMo and Holli's Tips

In November Tara Lazar kicked off the 2nd annual Picture Book Idea Month. Sadly, I only lasted about 10 days - but those 10 days STILL generated so many great ideas and got me thinking about future book ideas. I'll be doing it again next year, and hopefully I'll last the whole month on a 2nd attempt! The good news for all of you is that Tara's blog has a whole month of amazing posts to inspire and motivate you.

And... for the month of December, Holli Conger is posting daily tips for illustrators. Holli's advice and insight is always awesome, so I'm eagerly reading her posts every day - you should too!

5. What I've been up to

I've gone a little Ripple crazy. Thank goodness it's for a great cause. Above is the Junk A Doodle I got from one of my favorite illustrators, Holli Conger. So love this!

This beautiful print is by Christina Rodriguez. Scrumptious!

When Devon of Devon Industry posted this painting on her blog I wanted it badly. I suggested she list a print of it in her Etsy shop and she did, so now it's mine. She's one of my Twitter pals. Love her work!

I'm working on my marketing and promotions this week. I'm ready to up my game. Here's a little sketch I drew last night. I love how ideas seem to come out of nowhere. I've never thought of a dinosaur who's into ballet, but here it is.

This is the Amy Butler Barcelona skirt I finished right before vacation. I used her home dec fabric, too. I love how it feels like it has more structure because of the fabric weight. It's also fully lined! I altered it a bit. There's one whole tier missing. Since I didn't take notes while I made it, I may not be able to repeat it. Oh well.

6. Ice Ornaments

One of my New Years resolutions this year was to get back on track with making art with the Woog. It is freezing here and it snowed so we probably won't venture out for a few days. Yesterday morning we did a quick project and made ice ornaments. She used a collection of colored beads, paper and glitter while I mixed together some previous work illustrations.

7. Explorations of Style – 5 Illustration Voices Speak

5 Illustration Voices Examine the Concept of Style

In the short time that I’ve been involved with Escape From Illustration Island, I’ve noticed that certain topics seem to come and go in waves, at least in the online Illustration community.  For example, it seems that within a short span of time, different bloggers, podcasters, and other content creators will all be talking about similar subjects around the same time.  My favorite part about this is that each of us offers our own voice, our own angle, on a given topic.

Today I thought I’d highlight the latest subject that I’ve been noticing being discussed, which is STYLE.

Here’s a look at the ways that 5 different online content creators in the Illustration community have been exploring the concept of style in the recent past:

Nate Williams – In a recent blog post, Illustrator Nate Williams asked the question: Does a professional Illustrator need a style? Rather than stop there, he goes on to paint an incredibly thorough picture of what style is, how different illustrators approach it, and what it means for the working artist.  What makes Nate’s post so rewarding to read is how clearly he presents the concept of style with case studies, an outline of the basic creative process, and a look at some of the related opinion polls he has conducted at Illustration Mundo in the past.

Big Illustration Party Time - Friends of EFII and fellow Podcasters Kevin Cross and Joshua Kemble of the Big Illustration Party Time Podcast recently tackled the elusive topic of style on Episode 40 of their show, which focuses on freelance Illustration and cartooning.  Their discussion was in reaction to a listener question regarding the benefits and risks of working in a distinct style, as well as tips for Illustrators who wish to work in a variety of styles.

Jonathan Woodward – In another rich and rewarding exploration of style, Jonathan Woodward treated readers of his blog, Zero 2 Illo, with an investigation into the question, “Does an Illustrator Choose Their Style, or Does it Choose Them?” As proof of the fact that every artist has a unique perception

8. Podcast Episode 14 – Holli Conger

Episode 14 of the Escape From Illustration Island Podcast features an audio interview with Holli Conger, Children’s Illustrator and author of the influential blog Living the Creative Dream, where she outlined her year-long process of breaking into the Illustration field and starting her own business.  Together we discuss her origin story as a creative professional, her experiences in working with an art rep, the benefits of joining and creating critique groups, and how you can learn from your mistakes and achievements as an artist.

9. Etsy shop update

Summer has started and we're very excited around here. Lot's of plans, lot's of relaxation on the agenda. I hope to paint on a regular basis if the kids cooperate. They have a list of projects they want me to work on with them. It should be a creative summer around here.

One of my goals this year is to offer more products in my Etsy shop. As a first step, I'm offering 4 new prints from my collage painting line. Please spread the word. I'm hoping for much success this summer. I have a few surprises to share in the near future. This year has been one of experimentation in my art. It's so freeing to try out different materials and ways of working. Reading other artist's blogs has been such an amazing source of inspiration. Here are a few of my most recent favorites.

Please post here and let me know which artists are currently inspiring you. The collaborative nature of social media really helps with the isolation most artist's work in.

Happy Summer!

12. You Made My Day Award

I was so excited when Mike R Baker told me that I'd "Made his day" via my blog. This is a great compliment as I frequent his blogs myself. He is a fantastic illustrator and always surprises me with his illustration friday contributions which are often completed in gouache at lightening speed! Mike also designed this wonderful new logo for the award which I find adorable (I couldn't resist passing it on...)

So, here I am passing the award on to five wonderful people who's blogs I check everyday (I'm not kidding, I'm rather addicted). Thank you to:

Dani Draws (this blog is incredible. Dani is talented and has detailed tutorials... so CHECK IT OUT!)
Amanda Woodward (A tremendous source of inspiration both from her life and her art. I consider her a good friend and am lucky to have met her - she's from my home town as well. Actually, to be perfectly honest, Amanda helped inspire me to quit my full time job to illustrate for a living and I've never looked back!)
Chrissy Fanslau (Her perseverance and dedication is ultra inspiring!)
The Daily Coyote (Just check it out, it's awesome!)
CutewithChris.com (um, yeah, Cute with Chris is so darn funny)

14. A Little Studio (space)

No art today (the Woog's at Mother's Day Out) but I did want to share her space in the studio. Since this little corner of my studio has been set up, she draws or colors more than once a day now, on her own doing I might add. She just goes over when she feels like it and doodles. It's pretty funny walking in and seeing different things on the Magna-Doodle.

On another note. It is on my list to do a blog redesign and try and get more people to participate I've set up a flickr group for big and little art, so add your art there too if you have an account.
