I've been an eBay jockey longer than I've been a writer--although not as consistantly. It's not a "business" model that I can sustain because I tend to buy as much (or more) than I sell. My favorite? Star Wars Legos (highly collectable and damn cute).
I received a nice note in my email inbox stating I've received my red star, denoting a positive feedback score over 1,000 (and 100% positive, too). Pretty cool, actually. Those of you who might have read my flash story, "Enough", from Necrotic Tissue #13 will understand the obsession we eBayers have with our feedback scores.
What else am I working on?
Editing "No Good Deed" for publication (a novella of sorts) and putting some finishing touches on a story without a title. It involves obsession, too, as in the protagonist's father digs in the backyard for hours every night.
But in the morning everything seems fine.
Seems.
Ha.

This week I received my contributor's copies of Necrotic Tissue's Best of Anthology which contains my story The Scratch of an Old Record. Scratch was chosen as the best story in the July 2009 issue by the editor. This is the first ever Best of anthology one of my stories has appeared in.
Other authors include the freakin' awesome Natalie Sin (in fact, she has two stories in the Best of because she's quote 'freakin' awesome') and (possibly no less awesome) Nate Lambert, Doug Murano, David Tallerman, Daniel I Russell, Greg Hall, Jaelithe Ingold, Robert C Eccles, Zombie Zak and many, many more.
Look out for a competition appearing here shortly where you could win a copy of the above and perhaps* a very rare ARC of Theatre of Curious Acts which is due out just before Christmas and I will of course be weaving the competition around the release of Barbed Wire Hearts which is due out in less than 2 weeks. Freak, freak, freak, freak, freak.
In other news, it was Bonfire Night last night and overnight someone stole into the garden, planted a firework in the grass and stole the yard brush. Weird, dude. Very, very weird.
*I say perhaps but I really mean definitely but warn the ARC may come with my hands attached because I'm finding it very hard to let go of.
It pains me to report (although most of you have doubtless read), Necrotic Tissue will be closing its doors with issue #14.
Necrotic Tissue was my first HWA qualifying sale back when they paid $25 to make sure newbies could squeeze their toes through the "affiliate" door. I've been lucky enough to have three stories appear in Necrotic Tissue over the years: "Catalog Sales", "The Distillery", and the recent flash story, "Enough", in issue #13.
It's sad to see such cornerstones of the small press fade. Sadder still had it not been with us at all.
Thank you, Mr. McCoy and staff, for all the horror you've brought us.

As promised, I bring you a small shopping list for the weird reader on your list. (click on the images for purchasing info)
Yes, it may seem a little self-serving (being a Strange Publications book and all), but Cate's collection is wonderful. Check out www.strangemeninpinstripesuits.com and read the reviews.
I'm a big fan of just about everything Kim Paffenroth has written. If you haven't taken a peek at Valley of the Dead yet, you should grab a copy (or buy two and send one to a loved one). Smart horror, folks.

I'll have a piece of flash in January's issue of Necrotic Tissue (lucky #13 for those of you counting at home). NT has become a very tough market, and I'm beyond thrilled to land my third piece with them.
"Enough" was based (quite loosely) on an experience I had with eBay this summer. Remind me to fill in the details come press time. For now...

Want to see something scary? Head over to Mercedes M Yardley's blog to catch a glimpse of me 'almost' wearing a mask. I looked like a reject superhero wearing it over my eyes hence the dangling off the face pose. Ahem! Moving along...
It's been a strange old start to the year. First off, I had the flu (geez, will you shut up about it already) and it took until yesterday to get any writing done - a wonderful 500 words, well 500 hundred probably not-so-wonderful words when I re-read them later, but we have lift off. Working on a short story that I hope is scary enough to send to Necrotic Tissue, working title too hideous to post here. When the short is done, I'm hoping to get back into the novelette I was working on pre-Christmas (Cobweb Strings of the Rotting House).
One final note. Four things guaranteed to add sparkle to flu-days: 1) receiving a card with a pug humping Santa's leg; 2) getting a free copy of Shroud magazine; 3) Receiving a handmade get well card from your 4 year old neice; 4) Glitter added to snot...
And on that lady-like note, I bow out...

Head over to Horror News.net, click on book reviews, and to your right (yep, I just held my hand up to check which was the left and which was the right, and I do that in cars all the time) you'll find a link to a fabulous review of Necrotic Tissue #7. Woot! Anton Cancre is now officially my favourite person (okay, I do have a soft spot for R Scott McCoy, Nate Lambert, and everyone on my blog list but that's a whole other/sordid story).
I quote:
But the true monster here is “The Scratch of an Old Record” by Catherine Gardner, a surreal piece haunted slipstream that confounds as much as it wounds. Damn straight she earned the pro-pay prize of the issue.
Can the day get any better? Glows a shade of purple - oh yes, I am kind of having a Torchwood week (I'm not supposed to like the show) and John Barrowman is growing on me (did I say that out loud - good lord).

Sales: 4 (sort of) - 3 were sales, and one was a FTL reprint, but I'm counting it (especially as so many wonderful people read it).
Publications: 3 (Necrotic Tissue, Sand & Flashes in the Dark)
Approx Word Count: (note to self - where's my calculator) 3066 words ahem! Excuse imminent
Total Word Count 2009: 122,961 words
Stories out in submission land: No comment
WIP: The Drawing of Dolls - 11,611 words (not counted in months count), The Horrifiques - 1045 words.
One flash story - Playing Card Walls - and one short story - Empty Box Motel - this month. I completed a rewrite of my first MG, 'Lucy Baxter and the Evil Emporium' and then upon finishing decided I hated it. There was no stomping on the manuscript only a hurricane enducing sigh. I then settled down (again) to work on my YA, The Horrifiques, only for Lucy Baxter to persuade me ,with a new title and an even darker, creepier slant, she would work well as a YA/novella, so I'm currently 11,611 words into that. We still don't know if we're YA, horror novella, or weird-unpublishable time waster, and Lucy insists her name is really Claudia.
In other news, check out Stuart Neville's fantastic competition to win a signed copy of his debut novel, The Twelve along with a limited edition signed copy of his short story collection, The Six. I'm in.

On this day last year, Edward Lupak accepted my story 'Through the Warped Eye of Death' for Sand. A very nice thing to do on a girl's birthday. This year, the fabulous R. Scott McCoy, perfectly timed the arrival of the first print issue of Necrotic Tissue. Woot! Which of course wins him the 'Best Editor of the Year' award. If you want to share the title with him, please send an acceptance today. You have until midnight to comply (I'll honour all time zones). :)
If you haven't ordered your copy yet, do so now. It looks fantastic. The issue includes stories by Horace James, Justin Pilon, Jason L Keene, Jeremy Kelly, and Doug Murano.

So I'm playing the BlogPostThief today. Aaron Polson made a list of the ten stories he was most proud to have written and asked do we have favourites amongst our own stories or do we love them all the same. I definitely have favourites, and here's my ten:
Frog & The Mail Order Bride (out in submission land)
I think of this as my dark fairy tale and I love dear Frog so very much that I am surprised each time he is rejected (four times in all - plus he spent months languishing at a market that eventually died).
Bob's Spares & Repairs (published in 'Help' anthology '08, due for pub in Twisted Tongue in '09).
My futuristic western about an android setting out from his small town who comes across a serial-killing robot named Bob.
The Scratch of an Old Record (TBP in July 09 issue of Necrotic Tissue)
I love the idea behind this story (which I can't give away because you haven't read it yet) and I also love that it was picked as the best story in the issue making it my second pro-payment story.
The Graveyard of Dead Vehicles (WolfSongs anthology, 2008)
A surreal story that I like to think of as a 'thru the looking glass tale' from an MC who has lived her life on the surreal side of the glass.
Flying Dutchmen (TBP 2009 in Space & Time)
The first time I used my home town, Liverpool, as the backdrop along with the fabulous 'Liver Birds' building which I walk by on my way to work. Plus, I love the title.
Manipulating Paper Birds (out in submission land)
An evil clown story - what's not to love about that.
Cold Coffee Cups & Curious Things (Malpractice, 2009)
Written to the anthology guidelines brief and arriving successfully at the other side. Plus, it's a little bit surreal - I love stories that warp reality - and it resides amongst some fantastic stories in the anthology.
Chasing Alice out of Wonderland (out in submission land)
One of my longer shorts (at almost 5,000 words) in which I am proud of my future world building and of course it's full of zombies. Zombies good.
Trench Foot (TBP Fantasy Magazine 2009)
My first pro-payment sale - what's not to love about that. Plus it has a pirate and fairies.
Last place (not that the stories are in any particular order) is split between: 'In Silence We Stalk', and 'The Hollow Framework of the Cotton Man'.
In Silence We Stalk is a new story, currently out on submission, that I think is creepy... Of course a few rejections down the line, I might change my mind about that.
The Hollow Framework of the Cotton Man was my second story accepted by the fantastic Pete Crowther at 'Postscripts', and I think it's very, very creepy. Definitely shiversome.
Okay, now I feel like I need to bow down to the god of all things humble and admit that although I love the above stories, I don't expect the world too. I've also only included stories from last year and this year as there are very few stories prior to that that I am proud of. I am also quite surprised that I've only included one flash story in the above list. Like Aaron, I'd love to know if you have any favourites. (Plus if you're feeling a bit dejected it's a great spirit motivator).

The folks over at Necrotic Tissue have updated their website, and as promised their store is now open for business.
Head over there and take out a year's subscription to the magazine. If you live outside of the US or Canada (like me), you can email Scott McCoy to place your subscription. The team are very supportive of horror writers (paying pro-rate to one writer per issue, and $25 for all other short stories--excluding the 100 worders which are $5 I think--which is the minimum payment required to join the HWA), so it's a good opportunity to thank them for their dedication to the genre (and to pick up a great read). But hey, most of you know that already.
You can also purchase the Malpractice anthology, edited by the wonderful Nathaniel Lambert. He is the co-author of Sideshow Pi (along with Kevin Sweeney).

JacketFlap tags: Necrotic Tissue, Cafe Doom, Cafe Doom Writing Competition, Cold Hard Cash, Pro Rate, Horror Writers Association, Forum, Add a tag
I’ve posted about the CAFE DOOM fourth annual writing competition before, but with the deadline fast approaching (October 30th), the entrants being few (about 11 at last count), and the prize being spectacular (first place: pro rate of pay at $0.05 per word plus publication in Necrotic Tissue; second place: $100 in Shocklines Vouchers; third place: $50 in Shocklines vouchers), I thought I would remind you all.
Whoever wins this is a third of the way to becoming an ‘active’ member of the Horror Writers Association – unless of course you already have two pro rate sales and then you are already there.
So what do you have to do? Write a horror story of up to 2,500 words, join the forum (free, easy, fun), email your story to Ed, read the other stories in the competition, vote for your three favourites, win. Yep, that’s right. You get to read the competition. You know exactly what (though not who) you are up against. You can either sit back and bask in your brilliance and plan what you are going to spend your winnings on; or, like me, decide yours is going to come in last and crawl under a stone.
Full guidelines here.

Necrotic Tissue finally bit.
They bought my 100-word story 'Bug Eyed' for their 100 word bites. It will be published in the January 2009 issue, which will be available as a free PDF download.
And while you are waiting for my wondrous story, check out Issue 3, which contains Natalie L. Sin's, Losing Face in Kwai Chung. The story inspired the cover art to the left.

OMG! OMG! OMG! Cold Coffee Cups & Curious Things has sold to the Necrotic Tissue anthology - Malpractice: An Anthology of Bedside Terror. And as well as 1 cent per word, I get a fabulous Necrotic Tissue T-Shirt (I have wanted one of those like forever).
And, coincidentally, my coffee went cold as I was too busy running around the reception (note to self - shouldn't open emails at work as I am very, very loud when I get an acceptance - okay, sometimes I'm a wee bit loud just because I'm me but...). Again, woo-hoo!

"Halloween Watch" (would you take it with that title?) didn't make it into the top 10 of the Necrotic Tissue Bite contest, so I'm out.
BUT...
It made it into the 'Top 12'. OMG! So close. I am gutted, of course. I knew without opening the email that it hadn't made it as there was no attachment. Gutted, gutted, gutted. Great note from one of the editors at the bottom of the email though, I quote:
"There is pulp everywhere" is one of my favourite lines ever... It was just a bit to abstract for our other editors to win our top 10. You were in our top 12.
Well you can't complain about that now can you.
Anyhow, I am going to lengthen it to 150 words and try Alien Skin, and if it fails there I'll post it here on Halloween.

Received an email from Paige McCoy the editor of Necrotic Tissue yesterday to say that my story 'Halloween Watch' (still not loving that title), along with a few others, had survived all cuts and slices from over 60 submissions. I should add this is for their 100 word Bite Contest. Now it's a case of keeping my fingers crossed that I don't hear back until August 1st when they will be announcing the winner, runners up and those folks who have made it into the issue. If I hear back before it means I'm out...*
*Note to family & friends: Please don't buy any more nail varnish or manicure sets for me as I have no longer have nails on my fingers... Chocolate however is still approved.

So where was I... Five days into July and I've already completed two short stories. Okay they are not technically or officially or by most peoples standards 'short stories' but they are 100% undeniably titchy.
That is, they are both 100 words, including the title, short.
Bought myself a basket full of DVDs this morning. Can't wait to watch them all - Fido, 30 Days of Night, Stardust, The Brave One, Untraceable and Rendition. It feels as if I haven't seen a good movie in forever. Ooh, and it's the last Doctor Who tonight... That Tennant bloke and his Tardis better survive...
Congrats on the Red star status!
Seems? Nothing is as it seems in reality...(Hugs)Indigo
